User ImageFav. Food:
Pickled onions.

User ImageHated Food:
Rice. Potatoes. Things he thinks are bland.

User ImageJob:
Resident librarian. He works at the local library, obviously, with a title like that. The library runs on the Library of Congress filing method rather than the much more common Dewey Decimal System, but he prefers it. It is more difficult for patrons to find what they’re looking for, which results in them coming to the circulation desk, behind which is his office, to ask for assistance. His day consists mainly of helping community members find books they need, most of the time because they hadn’t even bothered to go find them on their own, as well as the daily chores of library upkeeping: in-house pick ups, shelf reading, shelving book trucks, repairs, mail, acquisitions, handling fines, and checking out computers. It’s boring, menial work, and that suits him just fine.

User ImageHobbies:
One would assume by looking at him that he likes to read. The quiet demeanor and studious glasses certainly make it easy to see. But he actually does not like to read all that much, save articles on the computer and magazines he’s shelving in Periodicals every now and then, and the very rare book if the story is just right. Other than that, though, he leaves the reading to the patrons of the library.

When he was younger he used to be a bit of a loser, dropping out of school and never completing college despite being quite smart. Instead he got into drugs and debauchery, petty theft and, eventually, more dangerous crimes. The usual stuff for a teenager without a goal, without focus, looking to live a thug life without actually delving into the dangers of a real gang. Nowadays he does his best to avoid any of those shenanigans, but sometimes the opportunity pops up for him to see if he still remembers how to pick a lock or a pocket, or hot wire a car, and he’ll engage in it just to ‘see if he still can’. He likes it more than he’s willing to admit. Anyway, Anthony at least doesn’t use drugs anymore and, for the most part, drinks as any responsible adult does. He’s supposed to be respectable, after all.

Mostly, he likes learning about Legends. Epics. Stories that involve a good guy, insurmountable odds, a bad guy and some fitting conclusion for all involved, generally with a lesson tagged on for schools to study. If he had been any good with being a student himself, he might have become a teacher or professor on the subject. As it stands, however, he feels it’s too late for that, and sticks to just reading or, more commonly, watching films about it. He does sometimes work at schools, though, but only as a substitute librarian, which are unsurprisingly in low demand most of the time.

And of course, though it’s his job, taking care of the library is one of his hobbies. If he’s not careful, he might fall to sleep in his office and just forget to go home, which is why he’s learned to keep spare changes of clothes there. Just in case.

User ImageVirtues:

User ImageSweet -- It wouldn’t be much of a stretch to say that Anthony is a kind man. The only problem with labeling him comes from how accidental magnanimous moments are for him. He doesn’t go out of his way to be a nice guy. In fact, he would prefer to just not talk to people. And yet he does, and he helps them when they ask. He inadvertently gets flowers for sad people, or somehow manages to say the right thing when someone needs a laugh or a pick-me up. He is awkward, and it’s endearing, which makes him easy to get along with and not predisposed to being an a*****e or aloof. Even if he tells himself he would like it better that way. Ultimately, he just likes people and doesn’t like seeing them upset.

User ImageOrganized – One doesn’t spend years in a library without picking up some kind of penchant for order and a general dislike of chaos. Anthony is no different, and does not like things in disarray. He does a good job of keeping his life, his job and his relationships in order. From the books on the shelves to his scheduled day (with allowed deviances since he’s not completely a**l about it), he tries to keep himself away from distractions and temptations. He is well aware that he’s easily swayed by such things, and tries his best to compensate, with usual success. Tied in with this sense of order is the fact that he’s not easily surprised, having lived and worked here for quite some time: strange stuff happening doesn’t ruffle his feathers as much any more, though, that’s only because it hasn’t happened to him. He reads about it in the papers when he’s recording them each morning, thus strange headlines have lost their novelty.

User ImageChivalrous – Anthony does his best to be as chivalrous as the heroes he loves so much in his stories. Be them knights from ancient England, warriors of Greece, soldiers of Rome: he believes himself to be, at least in some manner, a man as good and worthy as them. Though most died in their honorable quests, at least they accomplished something in their life. As he ages, passing each day as a library and doing very little for the state of the world, Tony is all too aware of how meaningless his existence is. So he does his best to make changes in the world around him. That means he helps people, whenever they need it, however he can. This adds a strange dichotomy to his character, because he shuts off this sense of responsibility to better the world, this idea that he has a greater purpose or has the capacity to truly help people in need, whenever he gets the impulse to play the other side of the field.

User ImageFlaws:

User ImageLoose Morals -- Remember that thing about him not liking to see people upset? The only exception to that is if he is the one responsible for it. This conflict of character comes out when he’s in just the right mood, daring to relive a moment of his past. That thrill of a successful theft, or threatening someone until they give up their watch, or just generally acting on a random, bad impulse and following it through to its end. While he feels like he’s a knight of some kind, a flawed man destined for some great end like the stories he so cherishes, he often finds himself on the complete opposite side of the tracks just because he never quite grew out of that ‘rebel without a cause’ phase of his life.

User ImageAwkward – While mostly cute and endearing, not to mention harmless, there are times when his inability to really click with a crowd, or even mesh with a person one on one, is a real problem for him. It’s the reason, despite being a romantic goon, he’s never married. It’s the reason that, despite wanting them, he’s never had children. It’s the reason that, despite being nice most of the time, he has no friends. It is also the reason most of the people he talks to, the ‘friends’ he does pretend he’s keeping, are the guys who call him when they want to rob a store or loot a car. He rarely hears from them now, if at all, and that actually just makes him more acutely aware of how lonely he is. It’s clear to him that he’s the kind of guy people like in the moment, helpful and gentle, friendly enough to be approachable, but instantly forgettable once they get what they need from him. Be it people in the library looking for a book, or thugs needing an extra pair of hands. And everything in between. Nothing lasts, and it vexes him.

User ImageNot Actually a Knight -- He’s a librarian, not a knight. His hero complex tends to get him into trouble, though so far it’s been pretty tame considering all the strange stories and accounts he gets from members of the community (weird folks come to the library for computer use, or just for a place to stay for a few hours, after all). He picks fights he can’t win (he works out only sparingly, and keeps himself in relative shape just through his general daily tasks. He does not have the build of a fighter or someone in any way imposing) for the sake of someone in need, or gets into more trouble than he knows how to deal with, just so whoever it is he was helping wouldn’t have to deal with it. He’s a ‘take it onto his own shoulders’ kind of guy, be it a fight or confrontation of some kind, threats, or something like debt or helping people to manage their personal problems. He’s easy to take advantage of, and is known in the library at least as the most readily available baby sitter around. He doesn’t know how to say no when someone asks him for help, no matter how easy or difficult it is.

User ImagePhysical Description:

User ImageHair:
Brown hair dappled with gray. Short, but not buzzed. Maybe a bit spiky and youthful, though if he’s at work then it’s kept neat and respectful. He would have a goatee, though it would be well trimmed.

User ImageEyes:
Light green, roundish. Gentle, soft.

User ImageFace:
A square-ish face with strong lines but a kind, even awkward expression most of the time. Save when he’s causing trouble: then he can don the most devilish of grins.

User ImageBody:
Thin, but not toned. He does not work out, but the activity of his job keeps him in reasonable shape.

User ImageFashion:
The library dictates a simple, clean dress code. Stuffy, librarian clothes, then, are the norm. He gets away with wearing whatever he wants, but generally he sticks to code. A button up shirt, a vest, a blazer, slacks. Nothing complicated or too out going, though he might sneak some kind of vaguely rebellious look into his work clothes, just to amuse himself.

User ImageKnight Title:
Camelot Page

User ImageChallenge:
"You are mine to protect."

User ImageUniform:
Earth theme... Medieval. Classic Knight-ish stuff. Color? Brown, hah.

Rough Concept Sketches:

User ImageTop --
Chainmail undershirt. Banner over. One chest platemail.
User ImageBottoms --
Brown pants.
User ImageGloves --
No gloves, but bracers.
User ImageBelt --
Belt is just a tied piece of rope.
User ImageShoes --
Leather or some dark boots, limited plating.
User ImageShoulders --
Platemail.
User ImageAccessories --

User ImageWeapon -- A shield!

User ImagePage:
As a Page, his shield will be simple. Small and rounded, it is capable of covering his hand and upper arm, at best. Generally, he will had it to someone in need of some defense in lieu of actually using it in a fight. Wooden. Painted, if decorated at all. It functions as any shield made of wood does, and would probably be better suited for kids playing Knights in the playground rather than actual fights. But there is a dutiful, endearing ruggedness about it. Like it somehow stubbornly refuses to acknowledge that it is not as useful as it needs to be. Or perhaps that comes more from its wielder.

User ImageSquire:
The shield now seems to be made of some kind of metal or plate mail. It is sturdier, though it bears dents that are reminders, apparently, of the stage before and how hard it had to work to supply some manner of defense. Or, more accurately, once again this is the projection of the wielder, who uses his shield as an extension of himself and his desire and resolve to protect. His magic is simple, a barrier that allows him to extend the protective range of the shield itself, channeled not only into the item, but literally through it. This magic allows him to act as a shield himself, if he positions himself in front of or over someone and the barrier extends enough to keep them safe. It only lasts a limited time, however, and leaves him weakened. He sacrifices his ability to attack to defend others, its most frequent use to grant time for escape for whoever he has been theoretically protecting.

User Image Re: Energy Pool

Because his attack is entirely defense based, even with magic at the squire stage, he would be able to sustain the defense for at most a minute at a time, but maybe use it twice as a squire at most, though it would be dangerous to use it a second time considering the energy drain. At the knight stage, the magic is fully focused in the shield, strengthening its ability to protect and fight, rather than extending very far. Even if he does extend the shield it wouldn't work any differently than the squire stage because the shield itself can now be used as a weapon.

User Image Re: Area of Effect

Only someone behind the physical back of the shield would be protected, whether Tony is standing behind it himself, or reaching out with it awkwardly or whatever other way he needs to use it in order to use the magic. The barrier extends from the edges of the shield itself, and the shape is defined by those edges and any physical things that block the spread of the magic (a wall, the floor, etc: Tony does not block the magic, though if he's standing on the other side of the shield (holding or touching it from somewhere not right behind it) whatever is beyond the shape of the barrier won't be defended).

User Image Re: Weaknesses

The shield doesn't fully extend around someone, just where ever he's holding it from.

The most obvious weakness is that he cannot attack with his magic, and his shield only becomes an actual weapon at his knight stage. He also has to put himself in harm's way, either by standing behind his shield and in front of the person he's protecting, or by reaching the shield out and leaving himself exposed. This are more... battle hazards than weaknesses, though.

The time limitation and the 'oh crap I have to come up with a way to fight after blocking this attack' are the general draw backs.

As far as built in weakness, though, the magical drain on him depends on how heavy the hit he's defending is: even if his attack is meant to last a minute, it he's blocking something powerful the drain on him could be dangerously significant. The only time this would really come into play, though, is if he's fighting someone of substantial level difference to him (like he's a page and he's taking on a powerful captain/super or general/eternal).

User ImageKnight:
The shield is solid and pristine, made of steel and shimmering with inlayed designs as if the color was folded straight into the metal at its creation. If that was, indeed, how it was made. It is larger, and has two straps on the inside that he can slide his arm into and adjust to fit. There is a quick release on the straps, as well. On the inside, under the straps, there is a bar he can hold on when using it as a weapon. His magic is limited to reinforcing the shield now, and either does not extend beyond its physical area, or only does so at a smaller radius. In exchange for a limitation on magic use, the shield has razor sharp edges that he can now use to attack as well as defend. By now, the balance between the two is much clearer and necessary. Simply, his magic is not much different from the Squire stage, because his shield can now be used as a weapon.

User ImageWhy A Knight:

I have long said that Tony would never upgrade, but for this I simply can't deny how perfect the new faction would be for him. He could never be a senshi (disregarding the fact that he was too old for it) and even the old Cavaliers weren't right for him. Though it was tempting, his perseverance as a civilian force, fighting for himself and those around him, his loved ones and the idea of senshi he had formed in his mind continued. I could never see him being corrupted or working for any solely 'evil' group, with or without the chance of purification.

So here comes a faction that allows him to fight for his own beliefs, to defend his personal ideas of justice and virtue, and that is unfathomably alluring.

In any case, it's always been built into his character that he has a hero complex, and a dire need to be of service to those in need, in any fashion. Offering money to people who need it, buying gifts and surprises, helping old ladies across the street, picking people up if they fall on the sidewalk. Fighting youma off or protecting other people around him from them if they're attacking. Caring about senshi and wanting to do everything in his power to help them. He's kind of always had this streak in him, whether he knew it or not, and awakening as a Knight seems like the logical next step now that the option is available, and fits so perfectly with him, rather than me having to make him fit with it.

User ImageWhy Camelot:

Tony and Camelot go way back. It seems the natural choice for him, considering his past. He spent a lot of his more innocent adult life, before he became embroiled in the craziness that is life in Destiny City, and the tumultuous interactions with its powered up denizens, collecting books of epics and legends. His primary focus?

Books of Arthurian Legend, and Camelot.

Upstairs in the library, on the third floor, in the back well behind the last sections of books there is a locked room. Locked now, at least. It is Tony's personal collection of library books, which he does loan out to those who ask and he thinks will not make off with them. Some of them are quite expensive or rare and valuable to him, on a personal level. Some are donations, some purchases, some gifts. He has accumulated quite the collection, and keeps them organized with their own filing system, away from the main library. He essentially has a Camelot library within the Destiny City Central Library, though no one really considers it in those terms. In any case, he treasures these books, and spent a lot of his time daydreaming about being a knight, saving lives and having gallantry to spare.

It was one of those 'when I grow up' situations that never faded, even as he did, in fact, grow up.

Then the 'illness' that sent most of the city into a communal coma and he was taken to Tartaros that was, as it turned out, Camelot. He saw some horrifying things there, and became disenchanted. He almost threw away the key to his collection once he returned home. But the more he spends time with senshi the stronger his urge to help them becomes, and his hero complex restored in him his need for these stories. The librarian knight is no more capable of ignoring or being rid of Camelot as it, it seems, is of being rid of him.

User ImageWhy Earth:

The obvious answer is that the Earth is where Tony belongs. He was born here, yes, but so were many other Knights destined to awaken in this troubled city. It seems that the potential to be one manifested itself in him solidly, and though he didn't key into it until he was in his adulthood, it was probably one of the guiding forces in his life, conscious or not. Even if that is a metaphysical explanation and a bit of a stretch, there is no doubt that his life was impacted by knights of one kind or another, and he naturally developed not only his love of Camelot and Arthurian legend, but his need to help those in need, and defend his idea of honor and justice in the world.

Everything Tony believes in, everything he dedicates himself to, and everyone he longs and tries to protect with everything he is are tied to Earth. It doesn't matter where they come from, what others are dedicated to: they're tied to him and to the Earth by being there. The planet, the concept, his home, his world. There is no place else in the galaxy for him.

In terms of design, Medieval is obviously the way to go. The classic knight.

User ImageConcerning Tony:

Anthony Darrow has always been a 'good' guy. Honest, sometimes innocent, passionate and dedicated, he finds things to fight for, to believe in, and he sticks with them. Though his past is doted, and he has some bad habits as all humans (and aliens) are wont to have, he has dedicated his life to being a better man each day. This need stemmed from an innocent, natural enough place at first, a simple life choice to guide him from being a reckless teenager with no direction in life to a sturdy, useful member of society.

But then he learned about senshi.

Through this last year at Destiny City he has been through quite a lot of senshi/nega/youma related things. He is almost used to that aspect, that something strange will happen, won't have notice, and he will need help. He's come to depend on the Senshi, in a way, and believes in them as people in a comic book believe in their superheroes. But he also feels bad for them. A few of them he has come to know personally, as friends, and even knows the identity of one (two when he figures out his son is a senshi). When he sees them he doesn't see terrorists, but children and teenagers losing their personal lives and having to fight a war that most people of the city weren't aware of, didn't understand, or considered them terrorists for. He is plagued by a need to help them, to support them, to just somehow make their lives easier and lighten the burden they bow to.

That doesn't mean he hates the negaverse. Truthfully, he hasn't had much interaction with them, though he once had a conversation with two agents that left him feeling very much the same pity for them as he does for senshi. Though Negas are sometimes older, he understands that they, too, could be people he talks to every day. People he doesn't want to lose. People who deserve to have some kind of a normal life. Unfortunately, his knowledge about both sides is still limited, and because he has mostly run into powered-ups who voice their sorrow, confusion and misery over having to fight or not being normal, his desire to help them comes from the idea that if they didn't have to be this way they wouldn't.

They would be able to live like kids are supposed to.

The idea here is, despite his roundabout thinking and general oblivious confusion of things, Tony wants to end fights. End wars. Fight for peace. He doesn't have to be on one side, though he does believe that the Senshi are the ones fighting for the right values. In essence, Tony would be fighting for life, living something 'normal', the chance for a peaceful existence: for humanity.

For civilians!

User ImageFighting Style:

Tony believes in life, but also understands that there are lines drawn in the sand, and duties difficult but necessary to be done. His fighting style focuses on defense and crippling attacks, rather than excessive damage or death. He prefers to leave people alive, and with the ability to enjoy that life when all is said and done.

But, of course, there are and always will be exceptions. For the greater good, he does what he can.
