It had been a while since Arian had felt the need to power up into his senshi of beads alter-ego. Actually to be honest – he hadn’t powered up since the whole swamp creepies crawling out of the Camp Larkspur lake incident.
It had been easier to pretend that the talking cat hadn’t happened and that the swamp monsters certainly hadn’t happened. Easier to throw himself into a new jewellery project and (more reluctantly) work on his holiday class work.
Tonight had been different. Tonight he’d felt restless. Maybe it had been the snippets he’d caught on the news about the terrorists roaming Destiny City, maybe it was the fact that he’d stumbled across where he’d hidden the golden henshin pen that ********* had given him.
Whatever it was, for the first time since summer camp Arian had found himself gripping the pen and half whispering the words Athene Power, Make-Up! Sticking anywhere near his cousin’s apartment while this had been kind of a No-No, so Athene had settled for the next best thing – patrolling – wandering somewhat aimlessly.
Somehow he’d ended up near a little bakery near the hospital which sold the most divine little cupcakes. It was shuttered now of course, the bustle of the day turned to evening silence.

Camelot was on patrol this evening.
Though things had been overwhelming and rather crazy recently, he was still a knight and he still had things to do. He had to take care of those around him, or his whole idea behind his being Camelot would go to pot. He felt in his heart that his duty was to protect lives, any life, and to do that he needed to remain vigilant.
No matter what.
He was near the hospital when he felt an aura nearby. A senshi, he could tell immediately, as there was no chaos in the feeling in the air. He looked around and then spotted the source soon enough.
"Ah, hello there," he said, not sure if this senshi had met a knight before, and not wanting to do anything too startling or off putting. He wanted to be nice and say hello, make a good first impression. Also, he wanted to know if the senshi was in need of help.
So he asked.
"Do you need any help?"

Athene had been caught up in his thoughts that the voice took the senshi somewhat by surprise. “Good evening sir”, Athene turned in the direction from which the voice spoke as he replied, catching sight of an adult who was dressed in an outfit reminiscent of the tales he’d read about middle age knights.
The bead senshi blinked as he realised that the other had asked a question, realising that he’d been staring “Um no, no I’m fine” he responded at last. “But thank you for the offer of help.” Random wandering around probably wasn’t something that counted as needing help with.

Camelot couldn't help but look concerned. Maybe it was just his paternal instincts flaring up at a completely unnecessary time again, but he couldn't help but look at the young senshi and think that something was up.
Maybe he was just perceptive enough to notice that Athene seemed newish. Or maybe he just saw a young senshi that looked at little thin, a little small, a little nervous, and he needed help.
A librarian judging a book by its cover. Not a good habit.
Camelot offered a friendly smile, nodding his head at the answer even if he didn't quite believe it. He tried to remain as casual as possible, as if it were the most normal thing in the world.
"Were you on patrol? I was just passing through this area, but we could always team up. Safer in numbers, and all that. My name is Camelot, page of earth." He felt that was a reasonable offer. Who knew? There might have been a giant youma lurking around somewhere, and he would feel terrible if he just wandered off and left the kid to be hurt or worse.
Definitely in an overprotective mood.

“Um I guess so” Athene answered the older man’s question about patrolling, a trace of hesitation to his voice. Actually he hadn’t – not really – random, somewhat aimless wandering around probably didn’t count as patrolling.
“Company would be great though – I’m pretty new at this.” New equating to this was his first official patrol as senshi, a given since he’d only just made the decision to actually do so. “It’s nice to meet you Mr Camelot, I’m...” He paused remembering that ********* had told him not to give out his non-senshi name “Sailor Athene, Sailor Athene, senshi of beads. Is a page like a senshi?”
To Athene’s opinion the older man had the better outfit for being out late at night, for all that it looked like something out of one of those medieval fairy tales – shorts and socks weren’t exactly late night material.

Camelot nodded his head. He had imagined the young senshi was new at it, but he had no idea it was his first patrol. Camelot could easily remember his own first patrol, and the first time he had powered up.
They had been overwhelming experiences.
But by now he felt he had a handle on it. He wasn't the newbie he was, and he felt his experience was growing every day. It made him stronger, not just physically, but because he had encounters and knowledge under his belt that aided him in new meetings.
"Senshi of beads? That's an interesting concept. It's nice to meet you as well, Athene." He smiiled, then pondered the question. He had this conversation a lot with the Negaverse, but explaining it in the heat of battle, or while trying to avoid it, was a lot different then speaking to a senshi on friendly terms.
"Sort of. I think the way we're awakened and the source of our powers are different. And I'm from Earth. Senshi are from space. I fight to end the war between you senshi and the negaverse. What other knights choose to do, I'm not so certain. We don't seem to have the same set of rules to follow, or the history and war you two sides are fighting." He hummed softly, not wanting to get too deep.
"What do you know, so far, about your duties as a senshi?"

Athene wasn’t sure what Camelot meant about senshi coming from space – he wasn’t from space – he’d been born here. Well okay not here as in Destiny City here, but he’d been born on Earth. He was pretty sure that ********* hadn’t mentioned anything about space.
The dark-haired senshi picked up on the second thing mentioned by the Page “War?” Athene frowned slightly. He was definitely sure ********* hadn’t mentioned anything about a war. “I don’t know anything about a war.” He bit his lip slightly. “Miss *********,” he remembered that the cat had asked him not to use ‘Miss’. “Um I mean ********* told me that senshi are supposed to protect people. People who can’t protect themselves.”

Camelot looked at Athene, eyebrows lifting in surprise. The young senshi must have been very new, if he was not sure what he was fighting for. He smiled, though, at his description of his duties and nodded his head.
"That's very true," he said, sounding sagely, if not a bit distant. His mind was slowly turning over all the memories of times he had been helpless, unable to protect himself. And all the senshi that had come to his aid. He smiled thoughtfully.
Things would almost be simple, if that was the only job. Saving lives was not an easy task, of course, and there were always times when they would be just a moment too late. But still, fighting youma was one thing. Having to deal with scores of strangers with similar supernatural powers, all of whom hated them just because they lacked chaos in their auras, made things so much more difficult and complicated.
"You do need to protect the innocent, and never forget them. Lives are the most important thing at stake here. But there are people out there, members of the Negaverse and I suppose now there are more of them... others. They have auras that feel dangerous. Anyway, they will fight you and try to stop you. Hurt you. Or worse. I don't want to scare you, I mean. I'm doing a bad job of that. In any case, you must defend against them as well. But I... I believe that anything corrupted must be capable of being saved. So what I have to fight them, I try to remember not to take their lives, either."
He sighed, shaking his head. He was sure Athene would pick all this up over his next few battles, but he didn't believe in just throwing people into the fray and seeing how they did. Knowledge was their best source of power and defense, and it was up to them to share it with each other.

“I wish this senshi stuff came with a manual” it was a heartfelt plea – to no one in particular. Things had been simpler before the day he’d met ********* up in the woods above summer camp, before he’d found out that apparently he was supposed to be some sort of defender against people wanting to steal soul crystal thingies that acted as batteries and that swamp monsters were real and very smelly. Actually the least said about swamp monsters – the better – that had been an extremely un-fond brief period of Athene’s life.
He looked at Camelot “I’ve never met anyone from the Negaverse. ********* mentioned them – said that they’re bad and that they...” He frowned. “Well some of them take soul crystal things. She didn’t say anything about a war though.” Athene didn't remember the cat saying anything about war and he was pretty sure he'd remember something like that.

"You know, it might not be a bad idea to have some kind of information kiosk or something," he shook his head, knowing how confused he felt first hand. When Camelot first stepped into this role, he had been as overwhelmed and lost. Or maybe even less so, which was not fair and just made it worse, since he had some knowledge of senshi and their battles before powering up.
He had been fairly involved as a civilian, as much as he could be. It might have made the transition easier.
He looked at Athene and nodded his head slowly.
"Is ********* your guardian cat?" That would make sense, though he had only started his mental database on guardian cats recently, and the question was probably a very obvious one by this point in the conversation. "Starseeds. The crystals inside everyone, yes. Without them, we can't survive. But more often, now, the Negaverse have been taking energy from people. it doesn't kill them, at least not unless the Negaverse soldier wants it to, but we still have to stop them. It's not fair to the civilians, being used like beef cattle, and having their lives turned upsidedown."

Athene shook his head at the page’s question “No ********* isn’t my cat, but I met her while at summer camp. I’m not sure what she was doing out there” it wasn’t something he’d thought to ask initially and then he’d had other things to chew on – like the senshi stuff and later on those swamp thingies. “But ********* is the one who told me I was a senshi. I haven’t seen her since then. But not long after meeting ********* – camp got really strange – there were some crazy monsters and things got really messed up.”

"Ah, I see," Camelot nodded his head slowly, thinking about it. He did not know all the details about Guardian Cats, of course. He didn't know how they found those who they woke, or how their relationship was afterward.
But he would find all that out later another time. Maybe when he found another guardian cat to speak to.
"Well, if you ever need any advice, or just someone to talk to, feel free to come and find me. I often start my patrols from the library, and end them there too. I don't know much, and definitely not about all things senshi, but if you have questions I can answer then I certainly will."
He smiled at the young senshi, trying to be reassuring.
He felt the senshi needed more people they could count on. They had so many enemies, and most of them were in it on their own or with other young teenagers to aid them. They had each other, and he did not agree with everything they all did, but if he founded someone that needed some help or guidance... he would be there for them.

Athene wasn't feeling particularly reassured – in fact the dark-haired senshi had once again been thinking on whether he was really cut out for this senshi stuff. He'd had doubts enough about the protecting stuff – but war? War was scary stuff. Heck he was only 16. War wasn't something 16 year olds should have to think about.
“I think I'm going to head home” he said eventually. It seemed quiet anyway. “Thank you for the offer of advice.” Right now Athene wasn't sure that it was something he'd take the knight up on – for a start taking the knight up on said offer would mean having to sneak out again – however Camelot had offered and he hadn't had to, which in Athene’s book meant he should at least acknowledge the offer.
“It was nice meeting you. I hope it's quiet for you.” Athene wasn't sure if the knight would continue to patrol – but quiet was good wasn't it? At least he thought it was.
For him however it was time to head back. As it was late enough that he was going to have to sneak in and hope that Saffy didn't catch him doing so.

Camelot looked at the young senshi and frowned softly. The poor guy looked terrified, and the knight didn't blame him. After hearing all that Camelot had to say about things, it was a wonder he hadn't powered down immediately and run off to pretend to be a normal civilian again.
Not that they ever could. Once they entered this world, they would always see it. Always feel that pull. There was no escaping destiny, he supposed.
He smiled and nodded his head.
"Quiet nights are always nice. No one in danger," or so he liked to tell himself. It was very likely that there were always people in danger, and if he were more of a pessimist, he would know that he had simply not found them on a quiet night. As it stood, though, he preferred thinking that any night that passed without a fight simply meant there were no fights to be had.
Maybe that made him naive, but he was alright with that.
"Have a good night. And remember, if you ever need help..." he smiled and then bowed, a habit he had picked up rather quickly, before he made to walk off and continue his patrol.
