Elke had gone to the library the very next day and was, quite frankly, shocked to see Mr. Darrow back at work. So, knowing he was apparently all right enough to be working, that night after that Sailor Virgo popped up on the bike rack. It was sort of embarrassing that she was small enough her feet didn't touch the ground when she balanced on the metal poles; they just sort of dangled, toes pointed towards the floor.
The lights in the building were going off, section by section; she watched them, a little mystified. Most of the people passing by on their way to the parking lot gave her curious looks, but didn't say anything. Some people, Virgo knew, were scared of the senshi, and she saw some of those people too. Were they going to call the cops?...
It seemed like someone had just told the workers inside the library, because after a little while, Mr. Darrow came out of the doors. "Hello," she said, waving. The hand she left in her lap was in a brace, but otherwise the only signs of the recent battle were fading scrapes on her cheekbone, and her somewhat scabby knees. She looked down at her toes, blushing a little bit. "I promised you an explanation, right?"
Right.

Tony had a difficult day. People weren't that bad with him, seeing his sling and maybe taking some pity on him, but things were still tiring and he was in some pain. He tried to be careful with his arm, but he felt the pinch of tugged stitches sometimes. Considering he had been attacked the night before, it wasn't a surprise that he was slowed down today. Carol, his generally obnoxious and scary co-worker, refused to leave the desk, and actually was a great help to him through out the day.
Feeling a bit detached, he thanked Carol and let her leave, though she protested, saying he could handle closing up. She eventually left, and he sighed, sitting down as most of the lights, save at Circulation, went out. An empty library was a quiet, peaceful one. He liked it.
But he didn't stay long, not even his will to work that strong. He needed a nap, and he draped his coat over his shoulder as he pulled it over his other arm. Making sure the computers were all off, he eventually headed to the front doors. He was stopped when he saw the girl from before, sporting some injuries of her own.
"O-oh, hello," he said, offering her an awkward smile that was half way between 'don't hurt me' and 'I'm sorry you're hurt'.
He perked up when she said she was there, as promised, to give him an explanation. "Yes, if you wouldn't mind... do you want to go in the library? Or... I mean, I've a long walk home. I thought I was closer but... apparently that was only by car standards of distance." He was babbling, nervous, but he laughed at that genuinely.

She tensed up a little, trying to read the nuances of his expression. It looked like he was scared of her. Really, deeply, truly she hoped that wasn't what that queer smile was about. Virgo didn't hurt anyone, didn't want to hurt anyone. Not even on accident. "I'll walk you home," she said, "just on case."
Beat. "Is that right? Just on case?" She tilted her head a little bit, then slipped down from the bike rack to stand close, but not too close, she didn't want to scare poor Mr. Darrow. "I don't speak English so well sometimes," she admitted, shrugging.
The bluenette smiled, a little goofily, when he laughed. "I'm sorry for leaving," she said, "but I couldn't get caught, my Captain is already so mad at me--"
She was fidgeting while waiting for him to walk, staring fixedly at the sling on his arm.
"--because I go out alone." She gave Anthony a hopeless look. "So I really had to, Mr. Darrow."

Tony watched her, tilting his head to one side without even noticing it. He let her come up to him, nodding when she said she'd walk with him, though it made him feel a bit silly to have such a young and feminine body guard.
But if she could kill monsters, he wasn't going to complain.
"Just in case," he said, relaxing a little and offering her a smile. His usual, friendly smile that he wore when greeting patrons he either didn't know or actually liked. The ones that didn't yell at him when they returned a book late and got fined for it.
"I understand completely," he said, nodding even though he really didn't. He understood what it meant to go out alone when one was meant to be in a group, of course, but beyond that, any actual context, was lost to him. He frowned at her, instinctively protective. Maybe because he owed her his life now, and he didn't want her getting hurt further, "you really shouldn't go out on your own if it's that dangerous, though. I'm sorry you got injured on my account."
He was thinking much clearer today, which was a good thing. Since he wasn't actively bleeding and his mind wasn't shutting down in shock and terror, he had a better ability to keep himself rational.
Walking leisurely, he glanced at her sidelong, shaking his head slightly. "With things like that running around it must be safer in numbers..."

She colored at that. "Just in case. I'll remember." Probably. Maybe. She still tended to come out with 'seen a goat' on occasion, and people at Crystal rampantly reminded her that it was 'seen a ghost'.
No one was perfect, okay?
Her heels clicked as they started to walk. That was the smile she was more familiar with, and reflexively her own smile came back. "Don't be sorry, Mr. Darrow, it's my job to keep civilians safe." The frown she took more as a 'you shouldn't be out alone' frown than an 'I am unhappy with you' frown, which was probably good. Virgo could get really worked up when anxious.
"It is, usually. The monsters are getting stronger, this was a lot easier before. I'm supposed to pair up with other soldiers on my team--the Zodiacs? I'm Sailor Virgo, Soldier of Innocence, and my brother's Sailor Leo, Soldier of Radiance. Our Captain is Sailor Aries, Soldier of Bravery." She blinked owlishly at Anthony, laced her fingers in front of her and picked up her pace a bit. It was hard to keep up, a little, because she really was very short, especially compared to Anthony. "Do you have any specific questions I may answer?"

Tony smiled, though he was rather bemused. It was her job, though she looked so young and rather frail, to protect 'civilians' like himself? Now that hardly seemed fair, and yet she had certainly proven herself capable. Sailor Virgo, of the Zodiacs, he noted in the back of his mind. Team mate to Sailor's Leo and Aries.
"Innocence? That seems somehow apt," he said, trying not to sound like he was teasing her. But it did fit her so well, now that they weren't in a life or death struggle and he could see how she acted. Or maybe she was just nervous around him, though he couldn't imagine why. Slowing his pace when he noticed her straining to keep up, he considered her question.
"Well," he said, thoughtful, but he didn't follow it up. He looked down again, trying to think up a good question. There were hundreds in his head: he wanted to know all about this whole thing, straight from the source, but instead he looked at her again.
"Am I not supposed to know your name?" he finally settled on, his eyes warm, but curious as he regarded her once more. He was rubbing his bad arm subconsciously as he walked, itching at the stitches.

His proclamation of innocence seeming 'apt' was met with a somewhat frustrated pout. Everyone said it was apt, but Virgo was very sure she was pretty worldly. After all, she had died like three times. That was a lot of times, two more than people usually got. She waited for his answer, reaching up to fuss with her circlet.
Then she smiled, shaking her head. "No, you can know my name! I mean, not the name I use as a civilian? But Sailor Virgo, you can know. What is it they say?... um. I won't have to kill you 'cause you know." Then a firm nod, like confirmation of what she had said. She pursed her lips, watched him more than the road; she almost walked into a light pole because of it, but it was worth it. Totally worth it.
"Don't do that," she said sternly, reaching up to remove his hand from the area of his stitches. "I had stitches all up my side and I was not allowed to touch them 'cause you can pull them out!" She seemed to realize what she had done, then, and turned bright red. "If you want to, though, if it's really important you could..."

Tony actually laughed pretty hard at her answer. Her threat to kill him if he knew her real name lost a bit of its impact by her having to search for the phrase. He looked at her, nodding slowly. She nearly bumped into a pole and he made to warn her, but she caught herself just in time.
Not wanting to embarrass her by talking about that, he gladly just chuckled and continued to itch at the annoying stitches and bandages he had been given.
Until she caught his hand and made him stop, of course.
"Oh!" he looked at her in surprise. He watched her turn bright red and slowly started to realize that she was very much embarrassed by him. He laughed, lifting his hand in a show of compliance before shoving it into his pocket.
"Okay, I won't itch. They're really annoying, is all. Been bothering me all day. You had your whole side in stitches? Was that because of another monster?" He blinked, hating the idea of a young kid getting beaten up so much. Of course, all he could do was base his ideas on how she looked, even though he had seen her lift the roof of his car and throw it, when no normal human could even think about doing something like that.
Something in that reminded him of the gift he had gotten her. He had bought it while on a break during the day, since she had said she would come to the library. He hadn't been expecting her today, but it worked out. He produced a small box with a card on it from his coat pocket, offering it to her.
"I... didn't know what to get someone for saving me from that beast, but... uh..." he got her something he might have gotten a daughter, if he had ever had one, which didn't amount to much because he still didn't know anything about having daughters. It was a little charm bracelet that he thought went with her outfit. The card said 'Thanks for saving my life, I'm still using it!'

"No," she said, shaking her head; "It was the Negaverse. They're the bad guys, sort of? They attack people and steal starseeds." She searched her memory to see if she had told him about starseeds; she'd mentioned having something special in their heart, right? Something like that. She pressed one hand to her side with remembered pain. "They cause the monsters." Virgo pressed her circlet further up her forehead, making a humming sound as she did.
Then, she took a deep breath and was about to launch into the whole explanation, but the box cut her off. She looked at the box; up to Anthony; back to the box. And then, one more time, back to Anthony, and then she hesitantly took the gift. "Thank you," she said, still sounding a little uncertain. Was she even allowed to be given gifts for doing her job? She would ask Hero, when she got back. As was polite, she opened up the card first; the message on the inside made her giggle, and it was with less trepidation that she opened the box. The charm bracelet caught the light as she lifted it out, reflecting off the circlet she wore.
The look of utter delight on her face could not have possibly been feigned.
"Thank you," she breathed, again, as she slipped the bracelet on. The card and the box she tucked up against her, and she continued to smile her beatific smile at Tony for a long, long moment. If she ever took off the charm bracelet, it would be a miracle. Sure, it was kiddish, but it was something! And that was a lot more than people usually got.
Looking down to the box for a moment, she scrubbed at one flushed cheek. "Thank you," she said, for the fourth time. "You really shouldn't have." And then she asked, "What else can I tell you? I can try and explain as much as I know, and I know a lot, it's kind of complicated though..."

Trying not to look like he was watching for her reaction, Tony watched for her reaction. He had never really been good at presents, lacking the number of friends required to have a need to practice the art. When he was younger he had not been considerate enough to ever buy anyone in his family gifts on holidays or their birthdays, either. So he had little practice. Seeing the way she lit up, though, told him she at least appreciated that he had gotten her something.
"You're welcome!" he said, laughing. He said it once, but meant it for all the times she got 'thank you' out. He didn't quiet get why she was so happy, but he was glad for it. Her smile was radiant, honest, so at least she wasn't placating him.
Chuckling, he grinned at her.
"I'm glad you like it! I didn't know... ah... well. I'm glad you like it." He nodded at that, then considered her question. "Well, you were mentioning the Negaverse... and how they make the monsters to steal... the things in our hearts? And you lot fight them, then, to make sure they don't. What are the... ah... heart...seed, no. Star, you said, starseeds for? Why would they attack people who have no idea about any of this for them?"

'Happy' was a weak word for the way Virgo was obviously glowing with delight, but that was besides the point. The point was, he was grinning at her and she was grinning back and oh, she knew it would never happen but still, wasn't it nice to hope?
"Starseeds," she supplied, "they are called starseeds, they're inside your chest, like your heart? That's what the monsters, they're called youma, they want the starseed. Only it's like your soul, without your starseed you--" She paused, looking up at the very dark sky. How should she word it so it didn't come out callous or scared? The petite Zodiac soldier took a deep breath. "You die," she finished.
She straightened, her shoulders slipping back like she was steeling herself to keep talking. "The Negaverse could get them from us senshi, of course. Our starseeds are different--not better, just different. Because of what we are? but there are things that humans can do that senshi cannot, so not better, just different." The bluenette pressed one gloved finger to the corner of her mouth, looking thoughtfully at him (or his jacket, one of the two). "They make the monsters because for a long long time it was just a very bad man named Charonite. Charonite killed--"
Virgo cut off. She couldn't tell him about how the Zodiacs had died, and died, and finally stayed alive. That would be extremely stupid, and also he'd probably think she was joking. The senshi had been very sincere, making eye contact as much as she could without blushing bright red, but telling him resurrection was possible? No.
"--some senshi," she said, stonily, looking straight ahead now. "I hate him. I hate him a lot."

Tony instinctively put his hand to his heart, tapping his chest thoughtfully. So that tiger monster wanted to get that starseed thing from him, which was why it had clawed him up in its effort to drag him from the car. It hadn't wanted to eat him, per se. The thought did little to comfort him.
Without his starseed, after all, he would die.
He looked at her, face unreadable for a moment. He tapped his bad arm now, thinking about the attack, and how she really had saved him. He didn't know how getting the seed stolen was worse than dying, but he imagined it was. And he owed her more than a little bracelet could make up for.
Seeing her pause, he tilted his head to one side. He could tell she was not telling him something, but he didn't push the issue. They were talking about bad men and death: she didn't have to tell him everything if it was difficult for her. He was struck with the urge to put his arm around her comfortingly, maybe out of a paternal instinct, but she was on his left side and that was the arm in the sling.
"I don't blame you," he said, thinking things over. It was all very interesting, but he could see it was sad. Terrible. "He kills people like you, who protect people like me? That hardly seems fair."
He was struck with the wish that he could do something for her, to help her. It was his nature, to care about others more than his capacity and skill set really allowed. He wanted to protect her just as much as he knew it was her duty to protect civilians.
"So... you're always in danger, then..."

"Life is unfair," said Virgo, her shoulders slumping forward. This made her look disconsolate, and more than that, even smaller and younger. Before, she might have been pegged for fifteen. Now, she looked maybe twelve. Twelve as of yesterday, anyway. Anyone who knew the dark-haired senshi could have told you that this was a very uncommon thing for her to say, and this was indicated when she straightened a little bit. "That's not right," she said, trying for confident but there was a tiny tremor in her voice. "It will all be okay."
Her sigh was quiet, her next words more so. "Did you know, we don't choose to be senshi? I've been a senshi for longer than I can even remember." Thousands and thousands of years. "The news says we choose to do this, so we're terrorists, but that's not so. I was born inside this skin."
She launched into her next explanation. "We're strong because that's how it is," she said, "because that's how it's always been. And I saw you because I always patrol around the library, I like to make sure everyone gets to their cars all right--well, I mean, it's on my patrol route, I also go through East Heights and the boutique district, you know."

Tony watched her, having no idea about her life, or how long it might have been. All he saw was a little girl who had much to much weight on her shoulders. She slumped and he moved, switching sides on her so he could wrap his arm around her shoulders. He did it because he wanted to offer her some kind of comfort, a brace in the real world, something safe and normal and friendly.
He didn't understand much of this, but he understood that she was strong, and not how the media played her, or probably anyone like her, to be.
"I don't think you're terrorists. You saved my life, after all. And I imagine, if the others are all like you, in duty at the very least, there are more people around here that owe their lives to you than we even know. That's something incredible." He really couldn't fathom it. He just knew he appreciated it.
"And thank you for keeping the library safe," he said, squeezing her shoulder to add to the sentiment, "that's comforting to know, with monsters like that. I guess that tiger didn't like books much. I don't suppose he knew how to read, though." Tony smiled, teasing, in an effort to lighten the mood just a bit as they walked.

Her feet stuttered on the ground when he wrapped his arm over her shoulder. As much as anyone else would swear Elke and Virgo were like night and day, they really were the same person, and that person could not believe her luck. Not only had Anthony bought her a charm bracelet, now his arm was over her shoulder, and it was just like...
Really sad. Why was he doing this? She looked up at him through her bangs, an uncertain smile and a blush extending to her collarbones on her waist. At the joke about the tiger, she giggled; and then, sounding a little lighter, she said, "Thank you." That made five times in a night that she'd thanked him, but her look--well, it made sense.
It was like the time with Black Lady, really. Except Tony hadn't just attempted to kill her. She had failed--he'd gotten hurt, hadn't he?--but he was still trying to cheer her up. Purposefully, she widened her smile and scrunched up her eyes. "I am really sorry, Mr. Darrow, I'm supposed to be answering your questions." She brushed at her hair. "Um... what else do you want to know?"
