No Dogby had been found.

No Dogby had been found.

Oh GOD, no Dogby had been found.

Why did she promise Nathan that she'd call Mr. Darrow to explain what had happened? It wasn't even her fault in all honesty. This was a fact. Had she been the one walking the corgi around, she would have kept her on her leash the whole time. It was only because that stupid boy let her off leash that she was able to run off after her bus rounded the corner. She could have picked up the little ball of fluff in her arms. That might have prevented Dogby from running away.

The girl sat in her bedroom with her door closed. She sat in the middle of her bed with Miss Kitty in her lap and her awkwardly large cellphone in front of her. Miss Kitty's plastic eyes weren't exactly bringing her any comfort, but it probably had everything to do with the fact she knew this wasn't going to be a fun phone call.

Eventually, a thin finger reached to press a few buttons on her older phone.

The phone dialed Mr. Darrow's number as she drew the object to her ear. She already felt as if all of the breath in her lungs had been sucked out against her will. Her heart was throbbing in her head, making it a bit hard to hear.

"M-m-mr. Darrow...?"

Tony picked up the phone on the second ring, and very nearly recited his library greeting before silently admonishing himself with a reminder that he was not, in fact, at work. He was on his personal phone. He looked at the cell for confirmation at that, and its bright lights twinkled as if to nod at him condescendingly.

Duh, Tony.

The librarian sighed and imagined he was just spending far too much time at work. He held the phone to his ear.

"Hello? Oh, Yvette!" Another thing his phone had known but he hadn't bothered to look at. It hissed sarcastically as he smiled into the phone. "It's nice to hear from you. Is everything all right?"

Clearly, Nathan had not told Tony that his precious corgi had gone missing. In fact, Nathan wasn't home, and Tony assumed Dogby wasn't there because she was with Nate. That in itself worried him, the weight in the pit of his stomach evidence of that, but clearly he had to start giving Nate the benefit of the doubt.

This was his son. Surely he wasn't as bad as he seemed. Surely he could be trusted with some small thing, like taking care of Dogby when she was sniffly, and he was at work.

He was going to be sorely disappointed in being proven wrong. But, for the moment, he sounded like he was in a very good mood.

There was that obvious moment of panic that struck the girl. That moment where she wanted to hang up the phone and pretend she hadn't called at all. Of course, she had no intentions on hanging up, but the temptation was enough to cause the poor girl to drop her phone on her bed. At least it was a soft landing for the device.

"Eep!"

The girl promptly fumbled to pick up the phone again and soon enough had it brought up to her ear. "S-sorry... " If the librarian had noticed that she dropped the phone, he probably would have figured she was apologizing for the brief interference.

"...n-no... s-something happened today... Imean... IsawyoursontodayandhehadDogby... a-and... heletheroffleashandthenshegotspookedbythebusandthensheranaway..." The girl's anxiety had gotten the better of her, and her words were all smooshed together in a rushed manner.

It was times like this that Tony was glad he was as familiar with Yvette as he was. It allowed him the capacity to translate her words as they tumbled out of her mouth on top of each other. It was very difficult, sometimes, and even he was having trouble today with it.

She was upset and clearly did not want to say whatever it was she was currently saying far too much of.

He did pick out a few key words, though, and worked backwards to construct the rest of what she was telling him.

"Hold on a moment," Tony said, frowning into the phone. He couldn't see her, but he could imagine how red she was. He had noticed her drop the phone, but that was hardly something he needed to comment on now that he was listening to the rest of it.

He felt his heart sinking in his chest.

"Did you say... Dogby ran away?" It was difficult for him to hide exactly how he felt about that very idea from his tone. As much care as he took not to upset Yvette when he could avoid it, at this moment all he could think about was his dog. Gone. "I... did you... look for her? Where is she? Where is Nate?"

Once more that intense desire to just hang up the phone and pretend she hadn't called overwhelmed her. This time she didn't drop the phone, but she did pull it away from her lips and shoved it up against her chest for a moment so the few stray sobs that had managed to escape her lips wouldn't be into the mouthpiece. Mr. Darrow's concern was obvious, and it made the girl feel even worse that she had to be the bearer of bad news. She had caught the questions, but it was necessary for her to take this small break to gather her composure again.

It was probably nerve wracking to say the least for the man on the other end of the phone.

She finally pulled the phone away from her chest, resuming a relatively normal position with the phone at her ear and the mouthpiece at her lips. "I-i'm sorry..." was the way the girl started off her response, which despite all of her attempts to regain her composure, forced another sob from her throat. "...I... I spent an hour looking... a-and... Nate looked while I was at work... I... I don't know where either of them are now... I'm s-sorry..." She had to pause again as water dribbled from her eyes to rub the tears away, allowing a couple more sobs to escape her.

It was very difficult for Tony to imagine Dogby on her own, in the cold, and getting sick or worse. He didn't want to imagine it: he wanted to pretend that she would be home soon and everything would be just fine.

He would have to go out and find her.

"I... I'll go out and look for her. It's... it's okay, Yvette." His tone was soft and he was trying his best to be nice but he couldn't hide how disappointed he was. How sad he was. And maybe that light tone in the back of his intentionally soft words that seemed to say he was a little upset with her.

He couldn't blame her. He couldn't even blame Nate. These things happened.

But why to Dogby?

"Don't cry, Yvette," he said gently, "we'll find her, I promise. She'll be okay. Alright? I know you're upset, I am too, but Dogby needs us to stay composed so we can find her. Will you help me put up some posters once I've made them? I'm going to go out and take a look around right now, though."

Poor Miss Kitty. She was getting strangled in the crook of Yvette's arm as she tried to get some sort of comfort from the plush animal. It was hard for the girl to stay on the phone at this point, considering the tone which Mr. Darrow was now taking. It was obvious he was trying to cover up all of his distraught emotions. Trying to comfort her when he himself needed comforting.

Even though it wasn't truly her own fault, now all she could think about how this whole thing was her fault. She messed up royally without even really messing up. "I'm sorry..." she wept as the man attempted to console her as best as he could manage at the moment. She definitely wasn't turning off the waterworks any time soon, despite how she was apologizing for her tears.

In an effort to try to be helpful now she offered one fact that might not have been highlighted earlier. "Sh-she... she ran off in my neighborhood..." If he was really going to go out and look for the lost corgi, he'd probably need to look in the right part of town if anything.

The moment the librarian mentioned any possible manner for her to redeem herself, the poor girl practically threw herself at the chance. "...I'll do what I can... I... I'll hang up posters everywhere in my neighborhood... even put it up on bulletins at the mall......I'm... I'm just so sorry..."

It was very difficult for Tony to try and be calm and clear headed when all he was thinking was he would never see his beloved corgi again. She was such a happy little thing, it seemed unfair for her to be out somewhere, probably scared and all alone.

It was a miserable mental image, picturing Dogby sad and sneezing, hiding in a dark corner.

God it was such a pitiful image. Tony just wanted to find her, bring her back home, and give her all the cuddles and dog treats possible. But for now he had to keep his head and actually go and find her.

That was the hard part.

"Don't cry, Yvette," he said very softly, his chest tightening, "We'll find her, alright? You didn't lose her on purpose, and I know you take very good care of her. I know you'll help me find her, as well. I trust you to do that, alright? I need you to stay aware and on the look out for her, okay? So you have to be strong for that, because she needs you now."

Maybe it was a little serious a speech for the matter at hand, but damn it he was not going to lose his corgi.

"You didn't lose her on purpose..."

Those words stung a lot. Yvette already knew she didn't lose Dogby on purpose, since as she saw it, she did not lose Dogby. It was stupid Nate's fault! If he had left her on leash like the law suggested, when she went to run, all she would have done was run to on direction until the leash reeled her in again. Stupid, stupid Nate!

Of course, she didn't say such on the other end of the phone. She kept as quiet as she could while squeezing onto the plush toy in her lap.

"...k-kay..." she eventually managed to squeak out on her end of the phone when Mr. Darrow seemed to be finished with his piece.

There really wasn't much for her to say after that. In a hesitant manner, the girl awkwardly mentioned "...I... I should probably go now..." She was using up too many minutes on her cell phone, and it would cost her. Too many minutes meant paying more, and that was something Yvette avoided at all costs.

Tony hadn't meant to crush her spirit with his words, but of course he was also struggling with the fact that Dogby was missing and Yvette had been there. Yes, it was probably all Nate's fault. In fact, he was certain of it, but he still didn't filter his words very well.

He didn't really believe she had lost the dog at all, but the words fell out anyway. He was trying to be comforting, when he needed comfort as well. He'd never been in that kind of a position before, not really. He felt stupid for caring so much, but then felt angry with himself for that feeling of stupidity.

"I'm sorry, Yvette," he said softly, hearing how upset she was as she hurried to hang up the phone. He'd have to go make things up with her later. Once Dogby was found, clearly, and everything was alright again. "I'll talk to you later."

He hung up and stared at the phone for a long moment, then took a breath and moved to the door. There was a dog hunt to begin, and he was damned determined to find her as quickly as possible.

And as soon as he saw Nate again there would be hell to pay.

The moment the phone was hung up, the girl flopped onto her side on her bed, seeming to curl up around the stuffed animal she had practically squeezed to death. Nearby on another shelf was the corgi toy that Mr. Darrow had given her. She was doing everything in her power to avoid looking at that stuffed animal.

She knew that if she looked that toy over, all she'd end up doing was crying her heart out.

She messed up big time.
