Tony was on his lunch break, and decided to take a walk. He had a sandwich in hand, his cane in the other, and was just enjoying the clouded sky, the cool air, the cold breezes. There was something about winter that was absolutely stunning. He loved being out in it, in winter, despite the cold or the wet or the snow.

Even in the middle of a busy city, on a weekday, it was beautiful. Or maybe he was being sappy.

While walking down the street he noticed a truck parked to the side of the road, with some people jumping up and down, waving signs. He went to it, like a moth to flame, as was intended by the show.

"Hello, sir! Are you looking for a dog? We've got some puppies for sale here!"

And before he knew it, they had thrust a small, floppy eared, stumpy legged, sweet faced Corgi puppy into his arms.

"Oh... dear..."

This was dangerous. Tony's hamster had died a short while ago, and he was without a pet. He lived in an apartment, and they charged extra for pets, but he was lonely. His son was useless, never there and when he was it was a blessing that Tony had worked. He would rather be away from the moody teenager, as his every effort to make peace with the young man failed miserably. A dog... would keep him company.

And this one was absolutely adorable.

Randy was bored.

He sighed, moving away from the shop he had been hanging outside of. Apparently leaning against a wall was some kind of crime, since the shop manager had told him to very kindly ‘get lost’ before he called the cops. If not for the fact that dealing with the police wasn’t his bag, he probably would have continued to linger outside the shop, just to piss the squares off. Honestly, what was the big deal? All he was doing was watching people go in and out, checking out what they wore and how well they wore it. How, exactly, was that crime?

Whatever- he could just find somewhere else to hang around. Surely not every store had the same absurd rules. Even if they did, maybe it would take longer for them to tell him to get lost.

It was fun just checking out what people were doing- he didn’t like being interrupted from his observations.

Sighing heavily, he shoved his hands into the pockets of a thick leather jacket slightly too large for him, moving away from the cranky manager. Heading down the street, the young man could feel his good mood falling with every step. Thankfully, a bit of a ruckus helped distract him from how lame adults were- some men prancing around by a truck caught his attention. Curious, he moved in to investigate, drawing himself up beside a much older man currently holding a puppy.

“Cute puppy you got there, pops,” Randy said lightly, feeling no real need to introduce himself as he reached over to give the puppy a pet, “gonna get it?”

Tony was very busy petting and baby talking the adorable corgi puppy to notice that someone was walking up to him. In fact, he didn't notice the boy until he was already speaking, and the hand popped into his eye line. He pulled back, looking surprised, holding the puppy out suddenly like he thought he might be peed on.

Tony blinked.

"I, what? Oh. No. Uhm... pops? Erm," he tried to recover. Had the boy seen him gushing over the puppy? Had the people in the truck? Surely they had, and how he had managed to forget about them and get wrapped up in doting on the puppy was beyond him. But he was very embarrassed about it. Blushing, he didn't quite know what to do with the puppy, half offering it to Randy, half pulling it back to himself.

"I don't think I can afford it," he said honestly, blushing a bit. The man said the puppies were seven hundred dollars, which was not an amount Tony felt comfortable just spending on a whim. Even if that whim could heal a hole in his heart left by a dead hamster...

He frowned. Being lonely was not a good enough reason to buy a puppy from a truck passing through town. Was it? He was torn.

"You... uh... you can hold it if you'd like... my name is Tony, by the way, not 'pops'. Not even my son calls me that."

He sighed. He looked very conflicted. The men in the truck were trying to goad him into buying it, but another few people were walking over to look at the puppies, so they were busy. Maybe these people would actually buy one, though the librarian certainly looked like the kind of sucker they were looking for. Quick buck, then roll out of town.
