Ever since being attacked by that crazy tiger monster, Tony had been devoting some time, whenever he could escape the desk, to researching in the periodicals section. He still had to wear his sling, though he was certain his doctor was just being mean. Yes, Tony had pulled a couple of stitches while not wearing the thing, but he didn't think he would get in trouble for it.

He remembered his conversation with Sailor Virgo vividly, and had been looking for any records on the subjects of these strange teams fighting over starseeds, monsters attacking people, deaths and 'terrorists' in the area. It was all making for fascinating reading, but Tony couldn't help but think he was just getting more and more confused.

He was sitting at a work table, where students usually set up their projects or came to write out homework, a stack of papers beside him. He was reading through one after the next, scanning headlines, familiar bylines of reporters who seemed to follow beats pertinent to his interests, and glancing over stories. He jot down notes on stories that were close, so he could photocopy them after hours.

He was supposed to only take a half hour for lunch and do some of this, but it was pushing forty five minutes and he hadn't gone back down to the desk. The student workers, used to him being punctual, would probably be wondering why he hadn't come back down, they he had told them where he was going.

If they need me, he thought to himself, they'll come get me, or send patrons my way. And with that he was justified in staying there for a little while longer, at least until this stack was done.

It had been several months since Parker had visited the library. For most people, this wouldn't be anything special, but for Parker, it was like running away from home without leaving a note, or a sign of life. When he first got sent to Hillworth, Parker had made the library his second home, often falling asleep in the reading corners or dozing off on top of one of the philosophy texts his mother had edited. These books were the ones he visited the most, fingers tracing over the pages as if he could feel his mother in them. She had edited them, not written, but it was as close to her as he could get.

As he grew older, Parker lost his sense of innocence. His father's public trial made his name and back story public record, and the resulting teasing was something that Parker had never quite recovered from. Once he started dating Dani, his free time went to her, and once he was awakened as Sailor Taranis, Parker had become a ghost.

That day, he had come by to drop-off some old library books he'd found abandoned in the Hillworth courtyard. This place had been a sanctuary to him, and he wouldn't see its talismans disgraced. Tony wasn't stationed at his desk, which Parker found strange. But perhaps it was for the best? Parker was always uneasy with his relationship with the librarian. It swung between nurturing and uncomfortable, though the latter was largely Parker's fault. He never knew how to accept the warmth of others.

While he was there, Parker decided to poke around a little in his old stomping grounds. He headed deeper into the library, rounding corners and passing some DCU students studying for finals. Another row, another face and then -- "Tony." Parker's voice raised in surprise. "I didn't expect to see you back here." It wasn't really a greeting, but Parker had never been good at formality.

Tony looked up from his work, startled and knocking the papers by his elbow off the table. He let out a frustrated sound, moving to recover them, then the person who had said his name spoke again and he caught the familiarity in the tone. He looked up again, surprised but not in the same way as before.

"Parker! Good heavens, what are you doing back here? I mean. Back in this area, not back... in the library. Though, that too! How long has it been? A few months at least. Keeping busy?" he knew he had answered his own question, but it had been fairly obvious anyway. He didn't mind that people came and went, because he knew many just used to library as an escape, and life often took them away again.

Glancing at his watch, he realized he had been away from the desk longer than he thought. Picking up the papers, trying to smooth them into some kind of order, he piled them on top of the rest and picked them all up as he stood.

"Are you busy?" he asked, wanting to catch up, but needing to put the papers back in the Periodical office and head down to the desk. He wanted to see if Parker would follow him. "Anything I can help with, maybe?"

Any unease Parker might have felt was soothed quickly by Tony being -- well, Tony. A sheepish smile tugged at the corners of Parker's mouth. "Graduation is soon so I've been busy preparing for it," he said, as if that could explain anything. The senshidom and Dani-talk seemed a little inappropriate. Would Tony care to hear about Parker's new girlfriend? He didn't think so.

Parker noted Tony gathering up his things, stacking them together so he could move. "Not busy, no," he said. "I was dropping off some books I found in the Hillworth courtyard. I didn't want to leave them alone so... did you need any help with those?" It didn't look like Tony was incapable of carrying his load (he'd gotten it here, hadn't he?) but Parker felt compelled to offer to help. Tony had helped him through the years; it was really the least he could do.

Tony, of course, would have gladly listened to anything Parker told him, even if it was about a girlfriend. It would certainly explain what kept him from the library, with something as important as a lady friend keeping his attention, instead of Tony wondering if it had been something he had done to drive Parker away, or something bad happening (on top of everything else, the poor kid) in Parker's private life, or if the bullying at school had gotten so bad he didn't come out or...

The many, many other things Tony worried about.

"Oh, ah, yes, if you would," he said, smiling. He had made a couple trips and got more than what he had started with, and though he probably could carry everything, he imagined the destruction of dropping them all and decided to avoid the chaos by being careful. He pushed a smaller pile of papers toward Parker.

"Thank you," he said, before picking up his own stack, "ah, so... just... doing okay, then? How's everything at school these days?" He couldn't help but ask, wanting to make sure everything was okay with the boy who used to spend so much time in the library, getting away from everything else.

Parker scooped up the assigned stack of papers, piling the load onto one hooked arm. He trailed behind Tony toward the desk, weaving in and out of the aisles. Tony navigated them like Magellan on the high seas; Parker was more of a kid in a sail boat.

It was easy to be comfortable around Tony, even for Parker. He had spoken to the librarian so many times in the past. Even with the passing of time, he fell into a rhythm. Tony asked, Parker shared. He was one of the only people that Parker felt that level of comfort with. "Hillworth is..." He sighed. "Terrible. I took the SAT, I wrote my essays, I applied to colleges." A portly woman rounded a corner. Parker murmured an apology and darted around her to keep pace with Tony.

"I got denied." There was a weight in the words, a guilt. "Across the board denied. I can only assume that Hillworth had something to do with it." A long sigh chased at the end of his words. Even though he had moved on to his job with GeekSquad and his apartment with Tate, it still hurt him to think of that rejection. Parker prided himself on his erudite nature, and he couldn't help but feel a prickle of shame to admit his shortcoming to Tony.

Tony made sure not to get too far ahead of Parker, knowing that he had the unfair advantage of working here for almost eleven years: there was no way he could get lost or even vaguely turned around at this point. He didn't want to lose track of his acquaintance, though, watching him thoughtfully as they walked.

His warm smile fell a bit when Parker explained what had been going on in his life, however. The librarian tried not to frown, not very much liking to hear that the young man was having a hard time. He nearly bumped into the woman himself, listening to the tale as he was. He probably should have warned Parker of her coming, but he was a bit distracted by his own thoughts.

From the tone Parker had adopted while talking about the tests and essays Tony hadn't assumed anything good would come at the end of the story. He frowned now, looking at him apologetically. They came to the periodical office, which Tony opened for them so they could go put the stacks of papers back inside.

"Perhaps," he said, shaking his head, "but I wouldn't let it get you defeated, Parker. You're a bright kid, and you can keep trying." He tilted his head, putting the papers down on a table and tilting his head slightly at the younger man. He didn't like him looking so dejected. "I'll do what I can to help you, if you like."

The office was as Parker remembered it, despite the lapse in time. He placed his stack of papers beside where Tony had laid his, and then stuff one hand into his pocket. He wanted to believe what Tony was saying, really he did, but doing so would make him an optimistic person. This was simply not the case. Even when he was happy, Parker tended to fixate on the bad. It was probably his worst characteristic.

When Tony offered to help, Parker laughed darkly. "I don't think any of it would matter now. DCU rejected me. DCU. I thought I could go to Purdue, Columbia, Northwestern, UPenn. I thought that a 1410 and a 3.6 would be enough. But it wasn't even enough for DCU." It had never been in Parker's nature to fix his problems, just complain about them.

He idly touched at a stack of books on the corner of one desk. "My life is depressing. Tell me about you. What have I missed?" It was hardly specific, but talking about his failures at college left Parker wanting for pleasant conversation.

Tony watched him, shaking his head.

"Hey, come on," he said, his good hand on his hip. He fixed the boy a stern look, not looking like he was about to take those kind of words from the young man. After knowing him so long, and doing what he could to keep an eye out for him, he wasn't going to let him come back into the library only to tell Tony he was giving up on school.

"That's a fine score, and your GPA is good. Add some extra curricular things to your application, get some solid recommendations, and DCU won't turn you away again. We have excellent tutors here, and a slew of research materials for the SAT. There's a lot you could do."

Tony frowned thoughtfully at the topic change, though, instinctively itching at his shoulder.

"Well, I ah... I was jumped in the parking lot, which is why I'm sporting this lovely accessory... but other than that, things have been as normal as ever. I check books out to people, make people pay fines. Same old, same old." It was a short answer, because he didn't want to talk about himself, though he didn't want to push the other subject if it was upsetting Parker.

Parker had a lifetime to complain about himself. He only had a limited time to be concerned for Tony. "You were jumped?" he said, lifting both eyebrows. He'd noticed the sling before, but he didn't really think anything of it. Parker wasn't always the most considerate teenager.

He stopped his fidgeting and turned to face Tony directly. "Who did it? Were you alone?" Parker could feel the shift in his mind as his senshi identity clicked into focus. Tony most certainly fell under the category of people Parker did not want to see hurt. If anything, he was even in the special category of people who Parker felt it was his responsibility to protect.

"Who would want to beat up a librarian," he mused. It was an attempt to soften the sharpness of his sudden concern.

Tony looked at Parker in surprise, catching the change in his tone when he questioned about the attack. The librarian did his best to offer a disarming smile, waving his good hand in an effort to placate the other and dismiss the subject.

"I don't know who it was, though the police assure me they're looking into it," he lied, "I was just coming back from picking up some books at the post office. There had been a mix up. It was pretty late, and they were waiting for me," that part, at least, wasn't a lie. He felt bad for making up most of the story, though, "I got out of my car and they attacked me. Stole the car, and cut my shoulder with what I can only assume was a knife."

That was close to the truth. Or as close as he could get. He had been attacked by a tiger monster, a youma as was later explained, and his shoulder torn by claws. A Zodiac soldier, Virgo, had saved him and spared him a tooth-and-claw related death.

"I don't think they were aware I was a librarian. Or if they did, I doubt it factored into their considering to attack. Anyway, the cuts are healing and the police are on the case, so it's not that big of a deal, all told."

He frowned, wondering how he had been tricked into talking about himself, despite his best efforts not to.

The police were a sore subject for Parker. He considered them largely unhelpful in the fight against the Negaverse. If anything, they only caused more problems for him. The ones he'd met seemed wary of him. There wasn't the blanket hatred that he sometimes anticipated from DCNN reports. Both Negas and Senshi were 'terrorists' and the fake Sailor Nea had done little to fix that stereotype. Bullets had flown his way before, too. He understood the skepticism of the police, but it didn't make their involvement any less aggravating.

From what Tony was describing, it sounded like a normal criminal attack, nothing of the variety that Parker had expected. It was easy to forget that there were other evil forces in DC aside from the Negaverse. "I'm glad you made it out okay," he said. "A lot of people don't." The negatives always leaped to the front of Parker's mind before the good. It was a habit. "I read a story yesterday about an entire family that was found in their parked car -- all comatose." There was nothing more to the story. Parker just had a knack for sharing the gruesome.

Talking about Tony was a nice thing for Parker. He wondered about the kind librarian more than he expected he would. The truth was that the man had been a pillar of solidarity during a very tumultuous time in his life. He would never forget that. "How are you, otherwise? Seeing anyone? Read anything good lately?" Parker cared considerably more about the latter than the former.

Tony laughed at the questions, shaking his head slowly. This was not any safer, as far as conversation territory went. True enough, at least now he didn't have to lie, but still. Maybe he should, as it would be less depressing to hear himself sounding like a popular,date-tastic guy than to admit out loud how he spent all his time in the library.

"Ah, no, I'm fine," he said, bumbling, "I mean, as good as ever, considering. A few... strange happenings around the library and some rough nights, but nothing lasting. I ah, don't read that much, but I do get some new books for my collection, which is always nice."

Tony was very big about collecting books on legend, mainly Arthurian but anything heroic or epic, and that was pretty much the only thing he did read if he ever bothered to pick up a book.

"And since you brought up the subject, what about you? Are you dating any one?" He said it with a distinctly critical tone, like a father waiting to see if he approved or disapproved of his son's choices. It was a very familiar air for Tony, since he very often dedicated himself to watching out for the students who came in regularly, making sure their lives were okay, because he didn't have kids of his own to distract him and fulfill those paternal impulses.

He also deftly manage not to answer the question himself, though by doing so it was fairly obvious what his answer was.
PostPosted: Wed May 05, 2010 3:15 pm

"You're skirting my questions," he said. The knowing smirk said he wouldn't press. He'd known Tony long enough to understand that the man was a listener, not a sharer. And Tony knew Parker well enough to know that he couldn't miss an opportunity to make a point.

It was nice talking to Tony, like everything was normal and okay. Recently, Parker'd gotten better about not wearing himself out to the point of exhaustion with his senshi duties, but he was still working on it. There were nights when he stayed out too late, mornings when he slept in past classes, and many assignment that he neglected to complete. The fact that he was still managing to pass was a testament to his general booksmarts.

At least he and Dani weren't fighting anymore. "You have a point," he began, lifting a nearby book and reading the spine. It was a Twilight book. Parker held it up. "Doing an anthropological study on teenage girls?" He cracked the book open. Someone had gone through and crossed out every 'Bella' and replaced it with 'Frankie' instead. Odd. Apparently it was a damaged book.

All of this did little to prevent him from answering the question that Tony had posed. Unlike his older companion, Parker decided he wanted to share. It was about time. "I'm dating a girl named Dani. Have been for... five months? Something like that. I don't know if you know her. She doesn't go to the library like I do." Not that she wasn't smart. If Dani wasn't smart, Parker wouldn't like her. They just used their intelligence in different ways.

Tony turned a bit red when Parker caught him, but coughed and looked away, as if to whistle innocently. He was not very subtle in his awkwardness, but he was trying to improve that. Clearing his throat, he was glad when the younger man moved on with the conversation.

It would have been very difficult to tell him that Tony had gone on a date with Carol. Actually, he had her over to his home for a date, though she left and hadn't stayed too long. Still, having someone he had absolutely hated for so long over to his own home for dinner was difficult to admit. It was quite the change in opinion and behavior.

And anyway, it was all tied in to a very frightening dream he had, and he didn't want to think about that bit.

"We have to have books that appeal to everyone, even if they're terrible," he sighed, shaking his head slowly at the Twilight book. Why he had an opinion on that book in particular, since he didn't read much of anything, was a mystery. But he didn't seem to be a fan.

"Dating!" He said brightly, looking at Parker in surprise and obvious delight, "well that explains the absences from around this place! I don't know her, but she must be a nice girl, if you like her!" He laughed at that, wondering why he said it. He just wanted Parker with a good fit, he imagined, because the boy deserved some good things in his life. "So you like this girl, huh? Five months is pretty good."
