Sometimes Tony wondered why he had ever bought a car. After his first car had been ruthlessly murdered by a youma, he had been forced to resort to walking for some time to get to and from work. Then he had finally went to the used car lot and got a replacement, which he had driven for a short period before he ended up in a coma with the rest of the city. After waking up, he thought he would be able to resume his normal life of driving to and from work, or to the stores, or just around where ever he wanted to go.
Was there something wrong in that simple expectation? Was it too much to ask?
Anthony Darrow wasn't sure, in the end. It seemed, though, that it was, in fact, too much.
Since waking up he had found himself with a new roommate, his son who he had not known for seventeen years. That son, though surely a blessing and joy in his own right, somehow, was now apparently the owner of Tony's car. Even though he called it crummy and a piece of s**t, in typical ungrateful teenager fashion. In any case, he always had it, or he was responsible to sending it to the shop, and thus Tony found himself walking everywhere once more.
He was trying to get his information together in order to get his application to become a substitute teacher in. He was checking in at schools, talking to teachers he knew, just figuring out what he needed to know or might want to know. He had to walk, though, on his cane, and that was getting tiresome. He was sitting on a bench, a bus stop in fact, taking a breather when he heard some strange sounds nearby.
Unlike most citizens of Destiny City, he did not know well enough to run away from strange noises. In fact, he was drawn to them like a moth to flame.

The strange sound was then soon followed by screaming.
A damsel in distress, no less !
Ashley's last week hadn't been wonderful, but this ? Really ? That flying... thing had come out of nowhere while she had been walking home from school, and now was carrying her..
Who the ******** even know where ?
The girl was wailing on top of her lung like most normal civilians would when suddenly monster-napped, but seemed to quickly realize this would do her no good. Especially when everyone else was just running away, leaving the 16 years old to her misery.
This was bullshit.
"LET ME DOWN, DIPSHIT ! DOWN ! DOOOWNN !!!" She tried to kick her assailant, but without much luck.

Tony's heart hit his throat when he heard a scream on top of the strange sounds. He knew he was right in running toward them! If he had run off, he would have left someone in trouble, and that was just not something he could do. Particularly now that he knew about it, of course.
He hurried toward the screaming and saw a girl being carried by a flying monster. He assumed that it was a youma, as he knew that was what the other monsters he had run into were called. Why should this thing be different?
But there didn't seem to be any senshi around at the moment, and he wasn't the one who was in trouble. So, it was a bit different, he had to admit.
"Hey! Hey!" He yelled, running after the girl and the creature carrying it. He grabbed a cup that was sitting on top of a garbage can and threw it at the monster, effectively drenching both it and the girl with whatever had been in it (a shockingly blue liquid). But at least now he had its attention. "Drop her!!"

Oh ! Someone was helping ! HER HERO !
Yes, she could definitively overlook being suddenly splashed with weird blue... stuff (was that Powerade ?) when at least someone wasn't coward enough to let her carried off to an evil overlord's hidden lair or something equally silly.
"I don't think that's wo- OH, s**t."
The latter being all but shrieked out when the monster angled to charge at Tony, it's beak clattering.
"WATCH OUT !"

Tony didn't think it was working, either, for a moment, and felt a sting of guilt for dowsing the poor girl, who was already in peril, in sticky-sugar-drink. Of course, his guilt was alleviated quickly enough as the monster turned around suddenly, proving that he had, in fact, gotten its attention.
Then it slowly donned on Tony that he had the monster's attention.
"Oh! Ahhh," he said, scrambling to think up a follow up to his heroic drink throwing plan. He gripped his cane, his trusty weapon these days, hearing the girl telling him to watch out. He certainly didn't need that warning, his eyes glued on the monster as it wheeled around at him.
He couldn't swing his cane high enough to hit anything useful, and he didn't want to risk hitting the girl. So he opted to test the monster's strength, in a way, by running away from its charge and leaping at it, catching the girl by the legs and digging his heels into the pavement, skidding along, trying to weigh the monster down enough to slow it. He offered his cane to the girl.
"Stab it! Or... something!" he said, since he couldn't reach and was trying to keep her from being taken off.

Okay, having a grown man cling to your legs wasn't exactly a pleasant experience. At least it seemed like the flying beast was incapable of lifting the both of them at the same time, or Ashley had a definite idea that it could have been even less pleasant.
Not that Tony looked fat or anything, but...
The cane caught her attention, and she managed to get a shaky grip on it, sending it crashing on the monster's side - it shrieked something horrible and let go of Ashley. Then, gravity took over and Ashley crashed all over Tony.
All in all, she was just glad she wasn't wearing a skirt.
"Ack !"

Tony watched as the girl caught on to his plan and took the cane from him. He held on to her so the monster didn't get away with her, using himself as a glorified balloon weight of sorts. He let out a whoop of triumph when she hit the creature with his cane, though it turned into a grunt of breathlessness when all the air was forced out of his lungs as she landed on top of him, one misplaced elbow causing the problem.
Tony wanted to stay on the floor for a moment, to catch his breath at the very least, but he imagined the monster wasn't done with them yet.
He helped her off of him, panting for air, trying not to spend time being embarrassed just yet. There would be plenty of time for that later. Instead he looked at her, concern etched on his face, though he was still wheezing for air.
"Are you okay?" he asked, his voice a bit higher than it usually was, his words coming out closer together.
The monster circled above them, not happy and not about to let them get away. It swooped down at them in a moment, diving out of the air with its large, people-lifting claws raked forward in an effort to catch the girl, since she was higher than the man curling on the floor. It would do her well if she still had the cane in hand, or nearby.

"Im fine... I think..." Ashley managed, looking at her arm - her coat didn't even look pierced, so the claws didn't get to her arm. "Coat took the brunt of it-"
The wind rushed past her as the creature did, the short teenager managing to duck.
"God damnit, somedays I really hate this town !!!" The purple-haired girl muttered, taking the cane from the sidewalk.
While baseball wasn't Ashley's forte, she was a mean hitter - and it was that skill she applied when she whacked the monster once it flew by again.

"I know what you mean!" Tony yelped, instinctively putting his hands over his head in case the monster swooshed by Ashley and came for his face. He really wanted to keep his face attached to his head, if that were at all possible.
Tony watched as she smacked the monster again, taking to a strange battle tactic he had picked up from somewhere. It involved throwing himself on top of monsters or bad guys in order to pin them. He tackled the monster while it was dazed, slamming it to the ground.
It wasn't very happy about that.
It let out a loud screech and worked to free itself, and Tony motioned for his cane. He didn't think the girl would want to actually kill the thing, and Tony wasn't about to ask a young woman to bash in something's head for him.
"Cane please!"
But the monster had other plans, throwing Tony off backwards as it flew straight up into the air with a burst of energy, difficult to see against the sun but not liable to stay up there for long.

This certainly wasn't a good outcome, but what could the tiny girl do to catch him ? Not much, and to be honest, Ashley had her own problem. She brought the cane down on the beast, as hard as she could manage, and she could feel it's skull give in with a sickening crack as it landed on the ground, motionless.
Ugh, gross.
She poked at it with Anthony's cane, as if trying to make sure the damn thing was really dead, before rushing to his side. "Are you okay ? I... I think I got that thing."
She hoped.

Tony grimaced when the cane hit the beast, shutting his eyes so he didn't have to see it. So he wasn't as stalwart and hearty as he wanted to be, and his manliness ran out when it came to seeing something get its head bashed in.
Everything was still for a moment, before the monster burst into dust.
Tony blinked at it, then sighed in relief, looking up at Ashley since she had come over to help him. He smiled, nodding his head. "Oh, I'm fine, thank you. Ah. Good job, on killing that thing."
He made to stand, wobbling because he didn't actually ask for his cane back yet. He managed it, though, smiling brightly as the adrenaline in his system finally had a chance to dissipate. He laughed, looking at the streaks of dust where the monster had been.
"Clearly you've studied the ways of cane fighting," he said, motioning to it. "Are you alright? It didn't hurt you while it was carrying you, did it? O-or when it dropped you?" He left out the 'on me' part of that.

"I play baseball sometimes at school. Not as often as soccer but..." The teen said, as if that somehow explained everything. In a way, it did.
Ashley gave Tony a worried look, handing him back his cane when she saw him wobble about. "Im fine." She was, really - not even a scratch. "Im sorry I landed on you... Thank you."
Heaven know where this thing would have taken her if he hadn't jumped in.

Tony nodded his head, smiling broadly.
"I think this is the first time I've been thankful for school sport programs," he shook his head. He was of the mind that sports were not as important as the arts, though both needed to remain in the school curriculum. It just bothered him when he saw schools get new uniforms and not new textbooks or cut music or art programs. But he supposed he was getting off topic in his own mind.
Leaning on his cane, he let out a sigh, glad that things had gone well, and the young woman hadn't been flown off to some terrifying death. Or whatever it was these monsters were up to.
"Oh, that's alright. I often find I'm most convenient as a pillow." He looked around, checking the skies for any more unwelcome visitors. "Maybe we should... be on our way? In case... uh... any more decide to use you as a dumbbell. I mean, ah, not the.. dumb... that didn't come out right."

Ashley couldn't help but frown a bit. She certainly wasn't dumb ! But she was willing to overlook it. Tony had just probably saved her life, after all.
"We should probably go, yeah." Ashley looked up. The sky was clear, but would it remain so... ?
At least there was no corpse behind. Just... ash. How odd. But then, Destiny City was odd.
"I could walk you home ?" She offered.

Tony saw her frown and shook his head, looking apologetic and fairly helpless in it. He hadn't meant to say something that stupid, though he supposed the adrenaline had shut off his brain a bit. It wasn't communicating with whatever was spilling out of his mouth.
Not that he was an expert on things like that. It just made sense, considering he hadn't meant to insult her and found her thoughtful frown to be as guilt prompting as if she had started crying.
"I'm sorry, ah. Anyway, I'm glad you're unhurt, and that the monster didn't fly off with you. I think I should probably be offering to walk you home, not the other way around."
He imagined she might be a bit shaken from the whole ordeal, as he certainly was, though he was doing a good job of hiding the way the excitement and fear that had been coursing through him earlier now made him tremble slightly.
