A heavy sigh was heaved as Lorne placed another small novella back on the shelf. It seemed the boy with the naive and idealistic heart was having a hard time finding any of his guilty pleasures that weren't...dirty. A blush seemed permanently smacked across his face with each risque cover. Was it so hard to find a romance that didn't devolve in to smut? Something totally innocent like a text version of any Disney movie would be great.
Sigh...
Lorne pulled another book off the shelf and began reading the back. With a groan, he placed it right back. He had come to this section only because the teen romance section seemed over-run by vampires and werewolves and really? Was just as smutty. Since when were teens supposed to be reading that kind of stuff!? It absolutely socked and appalled the boy with the out-of-style values.
"Guess I'm out of luck..."

Anthony Darrow was doing his usual rounds, picking up books abandoned by readers in the library for one reason or another. They decided they didn't want to check the book out, they hadn't liked it, they were just reading it while they were there, they just looked at the pictures. Whatever the excuse, books always found themselves away from the shelves.
He found a stack of books sitting on a table, and collected them onto his cart. He'd go around the whole library to pick them all up, then take them back down to the front desk for an In House Count. See what books were being taken off the shelves but not checked out more often or less often than others.
On every shelf there was a section of a row left book free and clearly marked with a sign that told patrons to leave any books they took from the shelves there for library workers to come and pick up. There were rarely any books on these shelves.
Tables, chairs, the floor, or on top of shelves seemed to be much easier for people.
Humming to himself, he moved to the next section to find a young man browsing through some romance books. "Do you need any help finding something?" the librarian asked on instinct, seeing the man's disappointed expression.

Lorne jumped, and his cheeks warmed a little as he placed yet another book back on the shelf. That one definitively wasn't what he was looking for either!
"UM, uh, uh, umm...no? I don't think so? I uh, just trying to find the one in a million exception to the genre I guess? Hah hah...."
Oh great, way to pull attention to just what genre he was standing in. Ugh. Lorne, you dumbass, think before you say something to embarrass yourself!
He bit his lip and adverted his eyes back to the bookshelf, wishing himself invisible. Here he was in the one-handed reading section for women, sifting through poorly-written books where 95% contained poorly written smut, all in attempts to find the one or two that didn't, just to satisfy his love of romance.
It didn't look good. Not for a 16 year old boy. Of course, he could always say he was looking for a book for his mom....

Tony looked a bit confused when the younger man jumped and stammered through his response and explanation. Exception to the rule? What did that mean? He looked around at the books, all romance fiction, as Tony had only noted in passing before. He usually didn't dwell on what kind of book someone was checking out.
There was always some reason. Some people chose to play it cool, or had nothing to be embarrassed about or feel awkward with their book choices. Others felt the need to explain just why they might be checking out a book of nude art, or the entire Harry Potter series.
Tony tried not to judge in advance, in any case.
He chuckled and nodded his head.
"You mean a good romance book?" he asked, scanning the spines to look for a specific author he had heard good things of. he didn't read very much, but he heard enough from the people at the counter, eager to share their opinions on the books they were taking or returning, to at least be familiar.
"That's not to say these books aren't good, ah... I mean. Well, let me see if I can help you..." he found what he was looking for, pulling out a book with a fairly simple cover. No half naked man in sight, at least. He offered it to Lorne, looking comfortable and relaxed in an effort to, hopefuuly, ease the boys unease.
"I think this might be a good one."

Lorne tenatively took the suggested book, and was somewhat reassured by the plain cover.
"if you say so. It doesn't hurt to give it a try," he gave an uncertain grin.
Indeed, if not for Tony's help now he might have spouted off some reason at the check out counter, saying that he was checking out books for his mom, but he really couldn't use that excuse now. Instead he was now just standing there, tall awkward, high school boy, romance novel in hand.
"Um...So~ .....yeeeaaah~" Lorne was at a loss of what to do next. "Um, thanks?"

Tony chuckled, not wanting to embarrass the nervous young man. Or himself. He was very good at doing both, mostly by accident, and had to put a lot of active effort into avoiding the problem completely. He didn't lose his warm look and casual demeanor, though.
Tony had seen people come in looking for far worse than romance books, that was for sure. He did find it a little funny that it was a younger man, but that was just a momentary amusement. What people chose to read was for them: whatever made them happy. For himself, he didn't read that much.
He got a lot of grief for that, being a librarian and all.
"You're welcome," he said, laughing, "If you need any more help, I'll be at the front counter. Or if you just want to check that out now. I'll ah. Let you look around a bit more?"
