The librarian decided that falling to sleep whenever someone read him a story was the silliest weakness he could ever have discovered. It was like being lulled by music, like bears in cartoons or something, only not quite as cool. He wasn't an angry, attacking monster, but at least it was less convenient for someone to break out a book than it was to put on some music. And he was sure it wasn't just 'let me start reading and you'll fall to sleep'. There were comfort factors, and timing factors, that played into it.

Still. Twice now he had gone to sleep while listening to Amara read to him.

He woke up slowly, looking around. His video game was still paused. Expecting Amara to have gone home, he was surprised to glance to his side and find her still there, asleep. He smiled softly, wondering how long they had been out, or rather how long she had been sitting next to him. Strange that no one had come to kick her out, but maybe they thought she was family.

How they might think that he wasn't sure. It wasn't like there were similarities between them. Or maybe the staff was just being nice to them both. Either way, she was still there, sleeping with her arms on the bed, her head in her arms, the book nearby. Maybe he wasn't the only one that got put to sleep by stories.

"Amara?" he said gently, not sure if he should wake her. She was probably going to have a stiff neck if she spent too long like that, though.
PostPosted: Mon May 17, 2010 9:25 am

"Mmmnnnn don't wanna go to school," Amara said, not really awake. She batted at invisible hands as if to ward them off, and her hand fell off of the bed, jarring against the chair she sat on. That did it. Sitting up straight now, she rubbed the sleep from her eyes, and slowly became aware of the fact that she was not in her bed. She was not, in fact, anywhere near her bed. ... She was about a foot away from a very familiar face. Blinking, still a little whoozy and uncertain, she ran her hands through her hair to straighten it a little. ... Amaravati had a lot of hair to straighten. Somehow, straightening up, and all of that seemed more important than any number of other things she could have done.

Wait, was that... "Tony?" she asked, looking a little confused. "What're you doing in my roo-- ... we're not in my room, are we?" Poor, confused Amara. Glancing about herself, the young woman blushed, realizing that she'd fallen asleep while reading Anthony a book. Oh dear. ... Wait. "Oh no! The food! It's probably spoiled, and... oh dear." The cupcakes would be fine, of course, but she hadn't considered what would happen to the curry if she ended up staying.

She could not believe that she was right here, teeth unbrushed, hair not washed, no doubt smelling like a hospital bed, and who knew what else! That was not the way to make a good impression. What a $@$&#xin;g nightmare. But at least he seemed to be smiling at her? "I must look a fright," she bemoaned, still so aware of just how undignified and ... and just embarrassing that this was. The tea would be long since cold, the food ruined, and she'd probably have to rely upon the hospital for breakfast!

Wait. Except, they could have cupcakes for breakfast. Not the most nutritious meal ever (in fact, more than likely the opposite), but at least appealing. Reading had been very soothing for both herself and the Librarian, but now she rather wished that she had found a stopping point. Well, a stopping point before sleep, that is. Apparently she had found a stopping point just fine on her own. What baffled her was that she had not been sent home long before this. ... Come to think of it, why had they just let her come visit him? What exactly had they assumed for that to be possible? Oh dear.

Biting his lower lip when she slowly woke up, he watched her struggle to get a grip on where she was. When she looked at him he waved, grinning broadly when she recognized him and it donned on her that she was still in the hospital.

The poor thing. She looked frazzled and confused. Clearly it had not been her plan to fall asleep at his bedside. He tried to frown apologetically when she mention the spoiled food, but he was so amused by her bustling and blushing that he couldn't quite pull the look off.

"You do," he said with a feigned sober nod, "you look terrible."

Like he had any right to talk, or even tease, about that. He was the one stuck in the hospital bed, with all the bruises and stitches. He laughed and gave up on the charade, patting her arm reassuringly.

"You're fine, don't worry about it. You just fell to sleep. No big deal, right? Are you late for anything, or will your parents be angry with you for staying out?" He tilted his head, not wanting her to get in trouble on his account.

When Tony told Amaravati that she looked terribly, she looked so crestfallen that it was pathetic, face falling like he'd rained on her parade. Which, really, he had. But then again, she had just woken up, and she wasn't at her most coherent upon just waking up. There were dark circles under her eyes that suggested that she had worried a share of the night away before falling asleep, that the things that had troubled her the night before had kept her awake. "... I do?" Yes, that was a sad Amara face. A very sad Amara face.

Then, all of the sudden, he burst out laughing, and patted her arm. She blinked at him in a sort of dazed confusion, it finally dawning on her that maybe, just maybe, he might be joking. Oh. He hadn't meant that. Scrubbing at her face again, she hid a yawn, trying to seem more awake than she was. "Uh... oh, I see. Yes, well. I guess I got a little carried away reading to you." His next words prompted her to sit up ramrod straight, and she glared just a little.

"I most certainly am not in trouble! I'll have you know that I am an adult, Mr. Fancy Pants Librarian, sir!" Tilting her chin up with the air of a woman most indignant, she tossed her hair a little. "If I've missed anything it's not a big deal, really. I can make up the work. I have, however, missed breakfast, and that is a good deal more pressing." Her parents wouldn't be angry with her, because they wouldn't know that she was gone. "I don't live with my parents, you know." Only because she attended Crystal Academy, but he didn't have to know that.

Harrumph! Fussy Librarian! "... Perhaps we should call up for breakfast," she mused, treating the hospital as though it were a delivery service. "But I suspect the food will only turn our stomachs. I don't suppose that you can go anywhere? Have they provided you with a wheelchair, or maybe some crutches?" Naughty, naughty girl! Suggesting that Anthony ought to leave the hospital just so that they could get breakfast! "Or, I suppose, I could go get some breakfas-- oh yeah, the cupcakes. How about that? Would that be all right, for now?" Oh she was so scattered!

Tony felt immensely guilty when Amara looked so upset with his words. He almost began apologizing profusely for teasing her, wanting to explain that it all had been in good fun, but she seemed to catch on soon enough and he eased his laughing a bit. He still felt bad. He'd have to make up for that one in a bit.

And then, somehow, he managed to press yet another button and set her off. Blinking in confusion, wondering what he had said for a moment, he shook his head and lifted his hands defenselessly.

"Mr. Fancy Pants...?" he asked, in search of clarification. His pants were certainly not fancy. At the mention of breakfast his stomach growled. He had eaten more than his recent routine last night, but it seemed it still hadn't been enough. He was hungry, too, and breakfast sounded like a very good idea. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to insult you by insinuating you lived with your parents..."

He hadn't known it was an insult, really.

At her suggestion to leave, though, he perked up. He was all for rule breaking when it suited him, but no other time. He didn't like seeing others breaking rules, particularly in his library, but when it came to himself his morals were just slightly looser. "Cupcakes for breakfast? I'm not sure that would sit well with me. I prefer something a bit more savory to sweet in the mornings. But I do think your idea about leaving is a good one. Do you think we could manage it?" He grinned at her, his eyes flashing devilishly. This was a part of his old nature, who he was as a kid. A rebellious, eager, dangerous young man. Sometimes it surfaced at the oddest of moments.

Like at the mention of escaping the hospital, even for a little while.
PostPosted: Mon May 17, 2010 10:20 am

When Amaravati realized that Tony hadn't meant anything by that, she settled out a little, though there was what suspiciously resembled a flush to her cheeks. "... Well, what else do you call a Librarian, Tony? When you're mad at him, at least." Briefly mad. Very, very briefly mad. She was over it already, and had long since forgiven him for his slip. Amara was a young woman of flighty emotions, given to changing them at the drop of a hat. Sometimes it took less than a hat dropping, too. "I'll just have to come up with another silly name for you to suit the purpose," she added, cocking an eyebrow at him.

Anthony was, without question, one of the silliest adult men she'd ever met, and honestly she was enjoying that. "I'm not insulted. Not anymore, at least." There was nothing wrong with him being concerned about her, was there? She pressed forward, absolutely oblivious to the fact that he was feeling guilty for poking fun at her. After all, she had already all but forgotten about it. She was resilient that way.

She would have helped him to leave the hospital no matter what he had said so long as it was an affirmative, but when he gave her a rather devilish, it was all over. At that point, she would have happily taken him anywhere. "Oh sure, we can go find you some better food. Should I get you a wheelchair, or will you be okay to hobble along with me? ... Come to think of it, it might not be best if you lean on me, because I've got that dratted ankle." Well $*@$. Okay, obviously she needed to find him a wheelchair, or something.

"What would you like for breakfast?" Amaravati asked, totally unaware that she was helping him to break rules. After all, she so rarely spent time in the hospital to begin with! She didn't connect his expression to rule breaking, so he was in the clear for now. So long as no nurses came along, they would be able to leave without much trouble, surely. "Hmmn, did they leave a wheelchair for you, or something? Or will I need to go hunt that down before we can leave?" Already, she was putting things back in the basket, hurrying as she did so. It wouldn't do to keep him waiting while she sorted this out. "I drove here, so we can take my car to wherever you'd like." Wicked, wicked man, taking advantage of a young lady like that!

Tony chuckled. He didn't know why people gave him weird nicknames. Couldn't Tony be good enough? It was short for Anthony, and it fit him. That was what nicknames were meant to be. Not names to call someone when one was upset with them. So he supposed it wasn't a nickname, then. In any case, he was used to it, so he didn't mind. Anything she came up with had to be better than what Carol and Jada did.

"No, I'd probably knock you over if I tried to lean on you. I need to get free of these machines. I watch the nurses when they turn them off to help me, but I don't want to set anything off. Do you know how to? Without alerting anyone that I might be escaping. Or making it beep like I died." He chuckled at that.

Breakfast. He thought about it, and his stomach grumbled eagerly. "Something with bacon and sausage," he said, nodding his head slowly. That sounds incredibly good, "and eggs, though not if they get in the way of the meat." He laughed.

"I think there's a wheel chair in the hall, sitting against the wall," how he knew that he didn't say, though he might have just seen it as they were moving him into this room. He grinned at her, "I think it should still be there, unless someone needed it. This is a pretty quiet hall, though, all things considered."

And he got to ride in a sports car while fleeing from the hospital for the morning? Awesome.
PostPosted: Mon May 17, 2010 10:49 am

"We really need to get you out of here," Amaravati frowned. "You're starting to sound really desperate." Poor man. Well, it was all right. She was there for him, and now everything would be okay. Slinging the basket through one arm, she looked around and tried to figure out the machines. It wasn't as though they came with a manual! Well, okay, they probably did, but if so she didn't have it. "You're right. You'd knock me over, and we can't have that." She was a smart girl, really, and she could figure these things out. "Ooh, how about this? I can unplug the machines?"

That would almost certainly get them into trouble, but at this point she didn't much care. Anthony wanted to be free of the hospital so that he could enjoy good food, and she was going to see to it that he got what he wanted. That smile could've sent ships sailing, really. Or at least, she thought it could. "Let me go get that wheelchair for you, Tony." She got up, setting the basket down, and walked out into the hallway. Carefully, she checked to see if there were any nurses nearby, and when there weren't, she pushed it into the room.

"All right, let's get you sorted out." She brought the chair beside the bed, and then went to work at the machines, getting him free of them as expeditiously as she could manage. She told herself that she'd bring him back later, and it wasn't a big deal, and ... really, he deserved better than what they were serving him. Poor man. "Err... can you deal with the, uh, IV?" Amaravati eyed the drip, wondering whether it would be bad for him to be disconnected from it. It probably had painkillers in it, right?

Ah well. She was ready whenever he was! It would just take a moment, she told herself, and then they'd be free. "If you keep the basket in your lap, this shouldn't be too awkward." Wheeling him out to the parking lot would take a bit of doing, but whatever. Tony was her priority here! It should have occurred to her, really, that he was getting them both into a great deal of trouble, but it was also possible that if it had occurred to her that she would not have cared. Doing a favor for a friend was more important than keeping stuffy hospital personnel happy.

Tony nodded, moving to take the IV from his hand. He wasn't much a fan of the needle, and he winced when he pulled it out, swatting it away from him like it was a spider. It swung down from the IV pole, just hanging listlessly, dripping every now and then onto the floor. Rubbing his hand, he let her finish with the machines before he made to stand, balancing on one leg and plopping down into the wheel chair.

He hadn't been able to stand for very long, his body tired and since he hadn't yet started physical therapy it was rather difficult to get around. At least he wasn't wearing a hospital gown, dressed instead in loose fitting clothes that were more like sweats or scrubs than the open backed gown of hospital legend.

"Yes, I can take the basket," he said, smiling. If they just acted like this was totally arranged and okay, no one would stop them. Or at least, that was what he told himself. It was all in the delivery. Of course, his acting skills had diminished considerably since he was a young man, when lying had been an art. Hopefully he wasn't as terrible as he thought he was.

He wished he had a hat, he thought obscurely. The back of his head had been shaved, though they hadn't given him a complete hair cut. It was a matter of necessity, to get to the wound on the back of his head and stitch it closed. It wasn't wrapped, though the stitches were covered by a bandage of gauze to keep him from scratching or pulling at them.

"I think we're ready to go," he said, situated. He looked up at her, grinning again, clearly excited. It was always a thrill, willfully breaking a rule, even if he wasn't sure what level of trouble they could get into if caught. A reprimand and then returned to the bed? It wasn't like they were going to kick him out. They might kick her out, though. He didn't think about it, green eyes flashing again, "we'll head to the elevator and go down to the parking lot. Get out of here as quickly as possible, without too many people spotting us."
PostPosted: Mon May 17, 2010 11:30 am

Amaravati hummed absently as she set the basket in Anthony's lap, and began to wheel him out of there. For some reason, she had an easy time moving through the hospital, and she couldn't figure out why. Maybe it was because she moved like she belonged there? That was a habit, acting like she owned everything, like she was comfortable everywhere. Humming still, she wheeled him down the hall toward the elevator.

"Yes, well... we'll get you something to eat, shall we?" she said, acting as though she planned on taking him down to the cafeteria. Which, naturally, she did not. A couple of people looked their way, but when they didn't seem to be in any hurry, Amara and Tony were dismissed. That was the key to not being noticed. Acting casual got you more than sneaking around ever could.

If they were noticed, she could simply say that she didn't know any better, hadn't known any better, and ask if she could take him to the cafeteria. It was about time for breakfast, wasn't it? Somehow, she'd managed to grab her purse before they left, and she hadn't remembered doing so. Huh. Amusing what motor memory would do for you. She must've just... autopiloted, huh?

"So, tell me... do you have a favorite place to go?" she asked him, pressing the button on the elevator to let them in. When the doors opened, it was somewhat awkward to get him through on the wheelchair, but she pulled it off. She had to. He was acting so... well, dangerous, and there was something interesting about it. It made her think of a classical bad boy, and wasn't that a strange twist on 'Librarian'? Heh. Ah well. She was enjoying herself, so she didn't think she'd stop anytime soon. Absently, she reached out and pressed the button that would take them to the ground floor.

Tony was very glad to have his accomplice helping to smuggle him out of the hospital. Even if they would eventually have to return, getting out and having so fresh air, not to mention food, would be great. Of course, he was dressed in strange hospital clothes, had half a shaven head and wasn't the prettiest sight as far as bruises, bandages and a big cast on his leg went.

But he didn't care about any of that, with the promise of bacon in the air.

"Let's shall," he said jovially, holding on to the basket as she pushed him along, hoping he wasn't too heavy. Of course, the wheels would take care of that, but still. He didn't like making her work too hard. Just being his partner in crime was enough. He'd have to repay her eventually.

"I don't have a favorite place," he said, looking around as they came out, "I usually eat breakfast at home, or at the library. Not much variety there. Take me where ever you like, so long as there's bacon and sausage available." He grinned, looking up at her, his head tipping backwards. It felt very odd, sitting in a wheel chair, and he did not doubt that he would get some looks this morning.

Worth it.
PostPosted: Mon May 17, 2010 6:35 pm

Tony looked like something out of Frankenstein, or perhaps a more generic run of the mill horror flick. Amaravati apparently wasn't phased by this, however. "You know, speaking of frights..." she said teasingly, ruffling a bit of his non-shaved hair. "You're one to talk, Tony." The elevator door opened, and she wheeled him out, ignoring the people around them. The hospital was not exactly empty, after all. They needed to get out of there before it not being empty became a problem. "Right. So, we need to find my car, and I don't quite recall where I parked it."

$%#@. Seriously. She should have thought of this. Ah well, there was nothing for it but to look through every row until they found it. Well, okay, maybe it would be easier than that. How many red convertible sports cars could there be? She was fairly sure that the average hospital-goer wouldn't have a sweet ride like hers, but then again, Amara didn't really know the average hospital-goer very well. Besides, she remembered the level that she had parked on, at least, so it couldn't be hard. ... Could it?

Twenty minutes and maybe fifteen cars later, Amaravati was beginning to wonder if everyone in Destiny City owned a red sports car. "Tony? You remember what my car looks like, right? Do you see it anywhere?" Crap. That was so, so very not good. Just when she was about to give up hope, she heard a familiar car alarm. "Holy $%#%!" No, no, no way! There was no way that someone was breaking into her car right this minute. Hurrying as much as she could while pushing the wheelchair, she arrived just in time to find--

A raccoon. An honest to god raccoon sitting on her dashboard. "..." What the %#@$ing $@%#? "Shoo!" she said, pushing Tony toward the car carefully, but angling things so that he wouldn't be directly aimed at the god$#@í raccoon. "Seriously? Seriously, after all of this, a raccoon?" She rolled her eyes, and sighed, taking out a cupcake and hurling it away from the car. It was the one she'd been nibbling on before she fell asleep, so it wasn't a huge waste, and if the raccoon decided to chase it, they'd be in the clear.

Unfortunately for Amara, such was not to be. "Well, $@$%."

Tony sighed, feeling guilty that she was doing all the work. But they are on the way to freedom and they had to soldier on. He dutifully held the basket, trying not to grin from ear to ear, even when she teased him for looking terrifying.

"Maybe while we're out I can get a proper hair cut," he said, sounding a bit hesitant. He always had the same hair-do... it was going to be strange cutting it all off. But he really couldn't wear it as it was now.

Tony looked up at her as they wandered, wondering if she hadn't brought a car and just forgot. It was strange that it was taking her so long to find a car. Particularly one that looked like hers. Of course, if it had been stolen he would hardly be surprised. His first thought upon seeing it was along the lines of 'whoa, I'd steal that'. To his eye, none of these cars came close. When he heard the alarm, though, he took over control of the wheelchair so they could go faster, wheeling himself along.

"Is that a raccoon?" he asked, as she pushed him closer. He did not want to be in the line of raccoon attack if it got angry with them. It didn't go after the cupcake, which resulted in a tragic loss of cupcake.

"Get out of here!" he said unhelpfully. "Go get that cupcake, you nasty little thing." He frowned, looking at Amara, "perhaps we should just give it the car. You're not very fond of this thing, are you?"
PostPosted: Mon May 17, 2010 10:02 pm

"Oh blast it!" Amaravati glared at the raccoon, daring it to leave... just daring it. "Come on, won't you do what Tony sa--" And the raccoon just looked at her. Looked straight at her. For a long moment, she was afraid that it was going to make a rush at them, at which point she'd throw herself in front of Tony, and $*@# the consequences. No, she was not ready to let a stupid raccoon hurt the already injured Anthony. Then in the next moment, it got up ponderously, and made toward the cupcake at its leisure. "..." Amara just stared. What? It had gone from posturing and standing on her car to toddling after the cupcake?

Well, she was hardly one to look a gift horse in the mouth, as it were. "Quick, let's get you inside before it comes back!" At this point, she could and did manhandle Tony. There was some fuss over getting him into the car, but the majority of it involved Amara trying to figure out how to get the $#%@ wheelchair into the back. ... At least it wasn't a two-seater. That would've been far more difficult to handle. "Ugh. What ... how are they supposed to take these things anywhere?" she grumbled, but finally got the thing in the car. The hurry was because of the raccoon, who she swore was watching her, and knew she had more cupcakes.

Speaking of cupcakes, she lifted the basket back into the car. Right. It was time to get the $@%# out of there. "I'll drive us somewhere, and we can decide what we want to have when we get there. Personally, I am surprised you don't want steak, Tony." Now that she was in the driver's seat, keys in the ignition, she could talk again. She pulled out of the parking space, and sped toward the exit with as much speed as the parking garage allowed. "You know, what you said about a hair cut? You could just get the back shaped, Tony. No reason you'd have to spoil your hair." No reason at all, particularly when Amara thought she might cry a little if he did.

The wasted cupcake would have to serve as the sacrifice, and not Tony's hair. No, that simply would not do. Hmmn. If they wanted a good breakfast, she knew of a place tucked away in the corner of a shopping district. That would do, that would definitely do. "All right, I've got a place in mind. Will you want coffee with your breakfast?" To her mind, asking him questions eased the process, and kept her mind off of the fact that that raccoon had probably scratched up her baby. ... That thought was awful, and she really didn't want to look. She'd look later. Later, when she could contemplate what it might take to fix 'er.

Tony watched the raccoon as it turned toward them, blinking. It looked like it was sizing them up and then decided that they were just not worth its time. Feeling rather insulted, he watched as the critter leisurely climbed down from the car and went after the cupcake. From its actions it was like it was letting them know that it chose to go get the food: it was not listening to their requests.

What a rude little thing.

"Yes, let's," he said, trying to help her. But he wasn't really in the best condition for escaping the hospital. His body was still weak, and he could not hope to use his leg. For now he was okay, as he still had pain killers in his body, but when those wore off he might be in some trouble.

Once he was finally settled he thanked Amara, who did most of the work, and watched her as she went to struggle with the wheelchair for a while. Were they stealing it, technically? It didn't matter, they would return it and that was the most important thing. If they got in trouble, Tony would take full responsibility. It was only right, since he had swayed her into helping him get out.

"Steak? I didn't know it was a breakfast option," he said, looking contemplative now. Steak was a good idea. He was sure once he was in front of a menu he would have no idea what to pick. He rubbed the back of his head thoughtfully, wondering if he could get it shaped without the rest of his head looking weird. They hadn't been too careful about making it look even or stylish, so he wasn't sure.

Glad to hear she had a place in mind, he finally made to buckle up. They were already out of the parking garage, but better late than never he supposed. "Coffee would be great. Am I allowed to have coffee on these drugs? I'm sure it will be fine." He chuckled. They were already doing a lot of things he wasn't supposed to be doing. Like... being out of bed.

He leaned back in the seat, taking it easy for the short drive. The change in atmosphere, in scent and just knowing he was out and moving around did wonders for him. As much as he knew he would be exhausted and pained by the end of the little trip, he felt like it was the best thing for him. Better than being driven insane by the tedium of the hospital.
