The man had been unconscious, or sleeping from the calm expression on his face, for three days. The blow to his head had been more serious than his adrenaline during the fight had allowed him to realize, though getting to the hospital so quickly had certainly saved his life. He hadn't been conscious to see Virgo pick him up, or to learn what had happened to that negaverse man he had hit with a rock.

Now he drew a very deep breath, like he was filling his lungs for the first time, and his eyes slowly opened. Blinking blearily, he saw that he was not at home, or at the library, or in the alley way. He was in a hospital room, the sterile scent of the building hitting him soon enough. He shifted, but everything felt a bit too heavy for him to want to move too much too soon.

He noticed his leg was particularly difficult to move, and soon saw that it was wrapped up tightly in a cast, elevated and cushioned. He wondered what the doctors had to do with it. It looked like he had undergone some surgeries for it. He'd have to look at his chart later.

Wincing, he lifted his hand carefully to feel the side of his face. It was swollen and he couldn't quite open his eye on that side all the way. Something told him he was black and blue, though he didn't need a mirror to look. Or didn't want one. That man had a very strong punch, but it was the fall and slamming his head on the floor that had done the most damage. He had suffered a concussion. All in all, he had been banged up but he had survived so that had to count for something.

Worry gripped him and he wondered how Virgo had gotten out. Was she here in the hospital? Had she gone back to fight the man? If she had, was she hurt further? Did he kill her? There was no real way for Tony to find out, and immediately he hated that feeling of helplessness.

She dropped henshin just outside of the hospital, and promptly proceeded to lie. He was her uncle--they looked too dissimilar to be father and daughter--and a scary man had attacked them, and she'd gotten away a lot easier because Tony had hit the man upside the head with a rock.

It wasn't completely a lie, and they took her stuttering as nervousness and shock. Then they proceeded to take Tony away somewhere and stitch up the decently-sized gash on her forearm. She'd fallen asleep on a bench in the waiting area, arms wrapped around her chest. And when she'd awoken, she'd been allowed to peek in on Tony before Dad and Pop picked her up. There had been a lecture--walking home at night with someone they didn't know was evidently bad--but they'd consented to allowing her to visit the librarian until he was better.

So she tiptoed into his room, a book clutched to her chest--she'd been reading when she came to visit, mostly fairytales since she didn't have anything else that wasn't romance novels. She was, understandably, a little shocked to see Tony awake, but then she was smiling widely. "Uncle Anthony," she said, brightly, even though the pinkish tone of her cheeks had deepened to cherry red. "I'm so glad you're awake!" The bluenette hurried to his bedside and set her book in the chair pulled up next to the bed; then, gingerly, she gave him a hug. "I told them I was your niece so they'd let me visit," she whispered. "'kay?"

Tony glanced over at the door when he heard someone come in, gaping in surprise when he saw Elke. The relief that flooded over him was impossible to aptly measure, with not proper unit to do it justice and no quantity large enough even so. He registered her calling him Uncle but it didn't really matter to him at the moment.

When she was close enough for a hug he wrapped his arms around her, only careful of the wires poking in and around him, hugging her tightly even though he knew they had both been through some rough treatment as of late. But bruises would heal, and he just needed to vent his relief some how. Hugging her was the perfect option. It let him feel that she really was solid, whole, not a figment of his imagination or, worse yet, a ghost. She was there, marginally okay, but most importantly she was alive. Alive.

He hugged her to him, kissing her on the side of the head, her hair. He cupped the back of her head with his hand in an extremely protective and paternal way. After a long moment he started laughing, relief bubbling over into giddy joy, releasing her and letting her back up so he could look her over.

"You're okay," he said at length, when his laughter subsided. He smiled brightly, eyes watering just a bit. If anything had happened to her, and it very nearly had, he would never have forgiven himself. That man had attacked him, after all: she would have been killed because of him. "I'm so sorry about that whole thing. I put you in danger..."

Art class in the college had taught her there were twenty shades of bottled red in oil painting. Her face was hitting alizarin crimson on the scale now, and heading towards mars red, but she was too glad he was alive to stutter through any of her questions now. She felt like the heat in her face was concentrated where he'd kissed her forehead, but that lasted for a few moments.

As he laughed, she sat back into her chair, the book of fairy tales on her lap. Her smile was that of the 'unsure-but-game', waiting to be let in on the joke so she could laugh too.

"I am fine," she acknowledged, and then she looked at her knees a little shamefaced. "You are not though. I'm sorry, I didn't--"

He interrupted her, though, and she frowned. "You did not put me in danger. If I hadn't gotten cut, I would have been just fine." And the Negaverse agent would be dead. "How do you feel?" His face was awful-looking, all bruises, and his leg, and... She pulled her smile back.

Tony watched her as she sat back, resting back into the pillows of his bed again as he did so. He felt like that one hug had taken most of his energy. Sighing, tired, he shook his head slowly.

"No, no," he said, "it wasn't your fault. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Again. You saved my life. I couldn't let you be hurt... I mean, I did anyway, but I'm sorry." He frowned, seeing the way she looked at him. Feeling self conscious, he looked away from her. The back of his head had been shaved, so some of his hair was short around the place where he had been stitched up. He would have to get a hair cut, it seemed, to even things out.

"I feel fine," he said, pretending to be looking out the window, "a bit sore. I feel like I've been asleep for a month. What about you? Your arm..." He glanced at her again, though he kept his head angled down and slightly away. At least to hide the side of his face that was bruised.

"What happened to that... man...?" he wasn't sure she would be able to talk about it here, but he was concerned nonetheless. If he was still out there, couldn't he attack them again? Or at least one of them. The way that attacker had said he was disgusted just by Tony's existence, that he wanted to 'dispose' of him, rung in the librarian's ears. How could someone hate so... freely? It seemed arbitrary, just picking Tony out and deciding to try and kill him. Taking someone's life for barely any reason at all, as far as Tony could tell... but that must be what Virgo meant when she had told him they were purely evil.

She tried not to look at the ugly stitching at the back of Tony's head. She really did, but as always, it didn't work, she she found herself staring at it all the same. There was no excuse, if she had been out with another senshi like she was supposed to be she would have been able to save him and turn that Negaverser into a smear on the pavement. All the same, she hadn't been, and this was the result.

"Three days," she said, deciding she would address this misconception of him letting her get hurt later. For now, though, being nice was the best option. Well, she was always nice, wasn't she? Just this time she was going to be very very very nice. "You were unconscious for three whole days." There were shadows under her eyes, more prominent than before, and there wasn't really a question as to where she had been outside of school.

(It was just after three in the afternoon, and Elke was still wearing her school uniform.)

She lowered her voice. "I--well--you were really hurt. He was hurt pretty bad too, I guess, he was bleeding, s-so I grabbed you and ran." The teenager clenched her teeth, fisted her hands against her knees. "I'm sorry." Which really meant I'll tell you more later.

Tony nodded slowly, listening. Three days? That was a bit of a shock, but his doctors hadn't come in to tell him anything yet. Elke got to him just as he was waking up, after all. He looked at her, frowning and shaking his head slowly.

"You must have been worried..." he could only imagine what he would be like if the situations had been switched, and she was the one laying in a coma while he had to worry over her. He just had to hope her other life, the one where she was a student and a normal teenager, kept her distracted enough. From the looks of her eyes...

"I'm okay now," he reassured, though it obviously didn't work like that. One didn't just wake up and they were better. He would have to under go tests and physical therapy, figure out what damage was done and how to fix it. For a moment, just thinking about it, he missed the simple sling from their first encounter.

"I understand," he said, when she explained about the fight. It was his fault, then, if that man was still out there. Hurting people. Killing them. He didn't say it out loud, though, knowing she would argue with him on that point.

"Well, ah, so..." he wanted to ask more about the event. If she had gotten in trouble with her team for it, or if they knew what happened yet. He knew she was supposed to patrol with a partner, she had told him that once before. Would they get angry with her for fighting alone? He frowned, looking at her. His worry was still clear in his green eyes.

"You don't look like you've been sleeping. You really should take care of yourself, Elke..."

With an embarrassed smile, she scooted the chair closer and, with the ease that had come about because of her long stays, settled her head on her arms as they rested on the bed. Her shoulders lifted a little in a somewhat sheepish shrug. She couldn't exactly honestly deny being worried about Tony, but she didn't want him to feel guiltier than he already did, so not answering seemed to be the best answer.

"Don't frown," she said, shifting uneasily and crisscrossing her ankles. "Everything's okay. You're gonna be okay and everything will be fine. That is the important thing." She shoved things off to the side: the things were mostly the unhappy truth that she didn't really know if anyone was angry with her. Mostly she had been avoiding everyone.

She glanced up at him through her eyelashes. "I'm taking care of myself fine! I even did my history homework." For once. She hadn't been patrolling at all. And hopefully Hero had had something... hit her upside the head or something, so she hadn't noticed the gym pass or the penicillin. It was hopeful. "I miss you at the library," she said.

Tony watched her, shaking his head. He knew she hadn't been taking particularly good care of herself, just by looking at her. She looked tired, run down, but at least her arm had been cared for. He would have felt even worse if she had let it get infected or something.

"I will be okay, yes, and I'm glad you are, too. Things could have been a lot worse, for the both of us. We'll have to talk about it later, when we can. Nurses pop in and out of here whenever they feel like it, I think."

He wasn't sure, he hadn't been awake, but he remembered seeing hospital shows on TV and they never seemed to knock before entering patient's rooms.

"Well, at least you're doing your homework," he smiled, though it faded a bit when she mentioned the library. He reached out and patted her arm gently. "I'll be back at work soon enough. As soon as they say I can go, anyway. Or perhaps a day or two before that." He grinned, teasing, "do you still have those Shakespeare books? I can't recall if you returned them or not."
PostPosted: Sun May 16, 2010 9:48 pm

"Once you get out," she agreed. No use revealing that she was a sailor senshi on accident, like she had with Tony. Next time, it was going to be very deliberate. And planned. A lot more than it was with Tony. "I was in the hospital once for fifteen days. They came in every half hour for the first week because they had to make sure I wasn't rupturing things, but then I got an infection."

The bluenette sidled a bit, then crossed her eyes to stare at his fingers. "If you pretend you have amnesia," she whispered, "they stop asking you questions. It helps if you cry, too." She really hoped he wasn't planning to tell them a sailor senshi had saved him. Because that sorta directly contradicted her story.

Also it would make her presence harder to explain. "I have them in my bag," she said, "I was going to return them today after I leave." She pulled them out, holding both unharmed books up so Tony could see them. "I was thinking of maybe reading one of them to you if you were still asleep but you are awake so." The leather-bound books were returned to her black backpack, along with her tome of fairy tales. "I'm glad you're okay," she repeated, for perhaps the fifth time. There was a kind of raw emotion in her olive green eyes--she really had worried.

He laughed at her suggestions, shaking his head.

"While I will certainly leave out some details, I don't think I can get away with faking amnesia. I'm a terrible actor. And I certainly won't cry," he huffed. He looked at her, though, because he remembered that he had teared up quite a bit just a few moments ago. They didn't have to talk about that though.

Tony smiled when she presented the books. He had recently discovered that when someone read to him he ended up falling to sleep, like a little baby. So maybe he'd keep that secret to himself, and not embarrass himself by nodding off in the middle of her story like a toddler might.

He saw her worry and he smiled, making himself sit up despite how tired he felt just so he could hug her again. He wanted to reassure her that he was fine, and if he could move enough to hug her maybe that would prove a point. "I'm glad you're okay," he returned, pulling back to look at her, "we'll have to avoid doing things like this in the future. Keep us both safe and out of this place."

She tilted her head a little bit. Faking amnesia and then just not talk talking seemed to work just fine for her. Of course, she had also had the advantage of the nurses cooing over how adorable and quiet she was. Tony probably would not have that; he was handsome, not adorable.

Elke personally felt she wasn't adorable but it had been an advantage then that she would like to keep until she had a better advantage, like jaw-dropping beauty. This was not likely to happen, so she had to cling to the teary eyes and hope it helped--

Oh!

"You need to sleep," she said into his ear, "and also if you meet a Dr. Baskov don't tell him you saw me." She had been very relieved he had not been the person admitting Tony. That would have been a little awkward and she was sure he would have said something like another mugging? you really need to stop protecting that person and that was what she would not do. "Yes," she agreed, kissing his uninjured cheek gently. "We'll do that from now on. And I won't go out alone any more."

Tony rubbed her arm, smiling a bit. He shook his head, knowing she was right. But he felt like he had only just woken up, which was true, and he didn't want to risk falling back to sleep lest he didn't wake up again. Maybe it was a silly fear, even a childish one, but it lingered in the back of his mind.

"Dr. Baskov? I don't know him, but I'll keep an eye out? To tell him... I hadn't seen you," he laughed. He imagined he wouldn't have to say anything unless he was asked, and didn't see why he would be. He watched her, thoughtful for a moment.

"I'm glad you won't. It's not safe, clearly. A partner would be best, so you could keep each other safe," he nodded. He didn't want to see Elke, or Virgo rather, hurt more than she was now. She was more than important to him: she was family. Almost. She had called him Uncle Tony, right?

"But I won't keep you if you have things to do. You've probably spent more than enough time here. Just be careful. And take care of yourself, okay? Let me know about... all the rest... when you can."

"He's got the white streak in his hair," she informed him, and then she settled back gingerly on the edge of the bed, taking his hand in hers and turning a dull shade of red. She rolled his hand palm up, staring at the lines like she was trying to memorize them. The fight with the pale-haired Negaverser had been too close, far too close. If she had had backup, it would not have been anywhere near that close. And it was only with the interference of Tony that she hadn't also ended up dead.

(You're no longer the indulged baby.)

She smiled at Tony through her bangs, head still canted down. "I don't really have anything to do," she said, "but I guess you need to rest, don't you." The bluenette slipped off the bed, bent over to pick up her leather backpack. It was sort of a travel sack style of bag, with four pockets; they sealed with brass buckles, not zippers. She pulled out the book of fairytales again and set it, quite firmly, on the bedside table. "If you need something to read," she said, suddenly shy and avoiding looking at Tony. "I didn't think you'd like romance novels much. Um..."

Elke pulled her backpack back on and looked up, twiddling her fingers in a rather childlike wave. "I'll come see you again tomorrow, Uncle Anthony. You rest up, okay?" And the bluenette skipped out, her mood much improved from the time she'd entered. Everything was going to be okay.

Tony watched her as she made to take the book from her bag, smiling when she set it down. He nodded slowly, thankful, but before he could say it she was over by the door. He watched her, feeling tired now that his body knew that the conversation was over.

There was a lot of rest he needed to get before he was back at even half strength. He stifled a yawn, resting back into the pillows and getting comfortable.

"See you later, Niece," he said, chuckling softly. He closed his eyes, heaving a very heavy sigh. A few moments after she was gone he was asleep, though at least now he wasn't going to stay that way for three days straight. And when he woke up, he had a book to read.

And the promise the Elke, Virgo, was going to be safer. All in all, a good visit.
