He was alive. He was alive - and he was home.
Frederick St. James stood at the front door of his loft, wondering whether he should knock and have Tolliver answer, or simply unlock the door open and go in himself.
He debated. He hemmed. He hawed.
He attempted to put off going inside for as long as humanly possible.
This was partially due to the fact that he did not know if the key would still work in the door. He could try, yes, but if he walked into some apartment that no longer belonged to him, he had a feeling he would not walk out of there - he'd been booking it.
Or maybe walking with a pair of nice, shiny cuffs on his wrists.
Most of his wariness at entering, however, had to do with the fact that he had to explain himself to the one person he knew would have missed him this entire time, even if his parents had not known.
Tolliver was going to kill him.
And it would not be pleasant. No, most likely, it would be horrible and awful and he'd be scared for life.
Fritz sighed. Then, finally making up his mind, he pulled out his key and unlocked the front door of Loft 108 in the Greenwich building, pushing it open slowly and peering cautiously inside.
It was...exactly the same as he had left it. A wide, rectangular shaped living room that did not hold couches, like normal apartments did, but rather two enormous, fifteen foot long bean bag chairs that could fit at least six people comfortably on a single one. There were various other mismatched pillows and cushions tumbled across the thick, cream colored carpeting, and a floor-to-ceiling poster of the Weasley twins from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows stood just beside the hallway that led down to the bedrooms. Several of Fritz's drawings were tacked lazily and sporadically onto the pale blue walls, like someone had just thrown them up there randomly one day.
The kitchen was not nearly as big as the living room, but it was still decently sized, with clean, white, marble counter tops and miscellaneous stainless steel appliances haphazardly pushed around.
And, sitting at the smooth, mahogany wood kitchen table sat a very familiar person with a head of pale, reddish brown hair that had a few colorful streaks in it that had not been there before.
"Erm," said Fritz. "Hi, Ollie."
There was silence. His brother turned the page of the newspaper he was reading.
"Welcome back."
The voice was low, quiet. Clearly Tolliver St. James was using his I'm not going to acknowledge the fact that you were gone for six weeks and didn't effing call me or even let me know where the eff you were so I'm going to just freeze you out since I had no idea whether you were even alive or dead voice.
"Hi," said Fritz again, completely unnecessarily. He stepped forward and pulled his bag from over his shoulder, dropping it down onto the table as he stood beside his brother.
Another silence. He shuffled around awkwardly.
"I heard about it, you know," said Tolliver. "The whole...communal disappearance thing."
"Oh," Fritz said. "Yes. That."
This time the silence seemed to last forever. Finally there was a scraping sound as Tolliver pushed his chair back, standing up and folding his newspaper neatly together, setting it down and moving towards his bedroom.
Fritz stared after him, completely nonplussed.
That's it.
"...Fred."
He almost hadn't heard it, but Tolliver had stopped in the doorway to his room, his back to his brother. Relief - pure, unadulterated, wonderful relief - flooded through Fritz's veins.
"George," he said.
Tolliver turned his head. Fritz caught the barest glimpse of a smile on his brother's face.
"Welcome back, Fred."
Then he disappeared into the room and shut the door.
He was only in there for about three seconds before there was a loud pounding.
"GEORGIE OPEN UP LET'S TALK!"
"NO - WHAT - WHY ARE YOU BOTHERING ME GO AWAY!"
"MAKE ME!"
"WHAT ARE YOU, SECOND GRADE? SERIOUSLY, GO AWAY! I'M BLOODY WELL MAD AT YOU!"
"BUT I HAVEN'T DONE ANYTHING WRONG!"
"YOU HAVEN'T DONE ANYTHING RIGHT, EITHER!"
"GEORGE."
"FRED."
"TOLLIVER."
"FRITZ. STOP IT."
"I JUST WANNA TALKKKKKKKK!"
"YOU LITTLE GIT - GO AWAY - "
And on it went, for quite a while, until finally Tolliver - red faced, irritable, and happy, opened the door, and Fritz, grinning obnoxiously from ear to ear, gave his brother a back-breaking hug in greeting.
At least until Tolliver shoved him off, threw a boot at his head, and proceeded to retreat to his bedroom for the rest of the night, leaving Fritz to sulk outside.

Fritz's day had gone...not-so-good so far. And he wasn't exactly pleased with it.
"Ollie."
"What?"
"What did I tell you about the hot water in the shower?"
"To not use it all up."
"And what did you do?"
"Use it all up?"
"You're so smart."
"Just take a shower already, nitwit."
Needless to say, that was only the start of things.
Fritz had attempted to explain to everyone - to no avail, it seemed - just why he had been absent for the past six weeks; and Tolliver, being his twin, had been the only one to just let things go.
Mr. Flowers, Fritz's boss at the art supply store he worked at, was not nearly as generous.
"But I told you - !" Fritz wailed as he stood outside, face pressed obnoxiously against the glass of the storefront so that he was practically smushed up against it and probably smearing it quite nicely. "I was drugged up! I didn't know what I was doing or where I was!"
Clearly Mr. Flowers had heard enough of his ex-employee's excuses, since Fritz decided to make a break for it - Flowers was holding a very menacing looking marble object in his hand that did really look particularly pleasant.
"YOUR NAME IS TOTALLY WRONG, YOU KNOW!" Fritz yelled, then ducked quickly, darting around the corner.
After that, things just went downhill further.
He spent an hour attempting to beg the university to let him back in, but after a "disgraceful amount of unexcused absences" he had flunked out.
Flunked out. It was horrifying. Frederick St. James didn't flunk anything.
Except maybe math. And somehow Fritz doubted the school would accept "I'm actually a secret knight of a princess of the zodiac senshi and I was off in space fighting these bad guys called the Negaverse and trying to keep the Dark Mirror Court from taking more civilians as their own, and oh yeah we had to fight this giant monster that almost killed us all and actually did kill the civilians but they all were reborn so they're not really dead after all" as a good excuse for being absent for six weeks.
And probably send him to a mental institution in the process.
"I spilled my coffee," he tried to explain to the waitress of the cafe he stopped by afterwards, who was now grumpy over the fact that there was a large brown puddle on the table and half on the floor beneath Fritz as well. And most unfortunately for him, his excuse of "Er. Drugs, you see. I've been under the influence for six weeks - " did not exactly go over well with the waitress. Or the manager.
"Look, I've been trying to tell you, Officer! I was one of those civilians who disappeared for six weeks! We were all drugged up!"
Two hours later, Fritz slouched home with a harsh reprimanding that "doing drugs would cause him to lose even more brain cells than he already had" and a $150 fine for disturbing the peace."
"You look like hell," was all Tolliver said, when Fritz slumped through the front door, his hair mussed, his shirt untucked, and nice dark stain on his pant leg from his earlier coffee spill.
"Thank you so much," Fritz grumbled, and started to make his way back to the bedroom.
"You have a letter, by the way."
He stopped. "What?"
Tolliver, without looking up from the book he was reading, gestured to the kitchen table. "It's over there somewhere."
Fritz glanced over, and, with a slight frown of bemusement, picked up the heavy cream envelope, turning it over in his hands.
He did not recognize the name scrawled in a neat font across the flap.

There was a cat sitting on the doorstep of the St. James loft the morning after Fritz returned home.
It wasn't a normal cat - at least, not from first glance. It was a motley brownish black color with lighter splotches, a tear in its left ear, and a stubby little thing at its rear end that might have passed for a tail once upon a time. The collar around its neck was black leather, a dangling silver identification tag naming it as Crook. It wasn't, to say, ugly - but it certainly wasn't very appealing looking, either. Perhaps its only redeeming quality were the enormous, luminous green eyes that blinked up owlishly at whoever it was near.
"Your cat's back."
This was said at the kitchen table, over a breakfast of kippers and eggs, a pot of coffee (Tolliver still preferred tea), some toast, and marmalade. A large pitcher of orange juice sat on one side of the counter.
"What?" said Fritz, his mouth full of sausage as he looked around for the syrup.
"Your cat," said Tolliver, enunciating each word slowly as if the other were lacking in intelligence, and without looking up from the morning post he was reading. " - is back."
Fritz glanced around hurriedly, as if the animal would disappear at a moment's notice, but there he was, curled up on one of the enormous bean bag chairs as if he were quite at home.
"Wait a second." Fritz turned back to his brother, a suspicious look in his eyes. "What do you mean, back? Crook's an indoor cat."
Tolliver shrugged, seemingly supremely unconcerned. "He disappeared soon after you did. I reckoned you took him with you."
"I didn't," Fritz said, as he swallowed his mouthful of food and pushed back his chair, standing and wiping his hands on a napkin. He crossed the room, over to wear the beanbag chair was, and flopped down beside the mangy black cat.
Crook cracked open one eye, looked at Fritz with a bored expression, and then went right back to sleep.
"Rude!" Fritz cried. "Here I am, back again, having not seen you for six weeks because I went mad from these drugs, and you just ignore me. That is not very nice, Crook."
The cat opened one eye again. Then, slowly, as if with a truly great amount of effort, it pushed itself slowly to its feet, dragged its body slowly across the beanbag chair, stepped slowly onto Fritz's legs, and slowly flopped down on his chest and went back to sleep.
"Well, aren't you Mr. Bloody Brilliant," said Fritz sarcastically, but there was no denying that he was thrilled to see his cat again. He had always been an animal person in general, but cats, as a general rule, were his favorite. They were only allowed one in the loft, which had resulted in Crook being picked up from the pound on a whim (Tolliver hadn't spoken to him for two days, on account of Crook peeing all over the floor upon arrival). But Fritz claimed he and the grumpy cat had a bond, even if no one else could see it.
The fact that two years after that day, the cat was curled up on his chest, was evidence enough of that bond.
Thinking of cats made Fritz think of a certain other pair of cats - cats who were not here, at least not at the moment. Memories came flashing into his mind, one right after the other - a lavender haired young woman who reminded him of Xena, Warrior Princess because of her "tough girl" attitude. And then, quite possibly, one of Fritz's favorite memories from space (despite the horrible situation they were in) came wafting into view - H ebe, in an attempt to grab food from his other side, accidentally grabbing his rear.
Fritz had laughed about that for days - especially since H ebe herself had seemed so unconcerned over the whole ordeal.
"I don't see how you can like that...cat," said Tolliver, as if he himself was not even sure what the animal in Fritz's arms was or not. Fritz threw a horrified look at Tolliver.
"He can hear you, know," he said, in mock outrage.
Tolliver just rolled his eyes. When he looked over next, both man and cat were sound asleep, curled up together on the massive bean bag chair.
