General Painite stood at the edge of the building, some store she had jumped on to. She was not paying much attention to where she was, just that she was there and looking for trouble.

Looking for someone to hurt.

She was in a bad mood, to say the least. Being at home, being alone with her thoughts, just made her wallow in misery. She hated it, and she could not bear it. All the wine in her house, and all the cuddles from her cat, Adorable, did nothing to alleviate the feeling.

It was like crushing failure, but she could not learn from it. She could not move on and make herself better. In most things, that was just what she did, but this felt like her whole life. Everything she was changing to become, everything she was imagining, came to a screeching halt when she realized the one fact she was basing her future one was wrong. He didn't love her.

He couldn't change for her.

The one thing that always made her feel better when she was down was hitting the town and gathering some energy. Fighting some White Moon sheep. But tonight she wanted to really hurt something. She wanted starseeds, and she wanted to kill. She found a couple walking toward the park, though they hadn't quite gotten there. And they never would.

She had one starseed at her feet, the man's crumpled body nearby, while she held the woman by the throat. The woman cried and sobbed, begging almost incoherently, though she stopped short when Painite reached into her chest and gripped her starseed.

The patrol had been somewhat uneventful this night, and Celsus had almost decided to head home when he felt it - a ripple of power, stronger than his own, floating through the air. He stopped, his body automatically tensing; the power signature was not a pleasant one, and he had the distinct impression that it was not an ally. Still, he made his way towards the source, eyes narrowed in concentration, stealthily slipping through the shadows of the town.

He could hear the sound of sobbing. Celsus's steps quickened, and he bent low, moving fast, until he rounded a corner and saw it.

The scene was somewhat horrifying. He stopped dead, eyes widening, flickering first to the man on the ground, then to the woman held in the Negaverse's grasp, one hand around her neck, the other plunged deep into her chest.

"STOP!"

The sigil of Chronos was in his hand, and he lifted the small gold coin, spinning it around in its palm. The General would find herself being spun as well, in the opposite direction, Celsus standing a few feet away.

"Really, now, playing with your food before you eat it. Hasn't anyone taught you that's wrong?"

Painite felt the knight behind her and smiled at the woman, who was not paying any attention to her now considering the terrible pain in her chest. The Negaverse General glanced leisurely in Celsus' direction.

"I'm so glad you dropped by, little knight," she said, sounding sincere enough. Though it was probably not for a good reason.

"Help me!" the woman gasped, though her voice was torn by agony and misery. Her face was drenched with tears, her skin pale and her small frame shaking both out of pain and fear. She was helpless, and could do nothing with Painite holding her hostage. The Negaverse General knew that, of course, and also knew that the knight wouldn't do much if he felt he could still save the helpless civilian.

They were so pathetic.

She was surprised when she was moved but she did not loosen her hold on the civilian, and laughed. She had been hoping for a real fight recently, or at least something she could really sink her teeth into.

"Why is it wrong to have a little fun? The only people who say that are those without senses of humor. Are you not here to have fun, then? That's such a shame."

Celsus smiled, although it was tight lipped and tense, rather than his usual accommodating, cheerful grin.

"I always have fun," he said lightly, lifting his hands on either side as if to indicate this. He dropped them back down, absently running his fingers along the symbol of Chronos around his neck, his other hand in the pocket of his trousers as he took a few steps forward. Under normal circumstances, he would just dive right in, but this was different. There was a human life at stake; a fragile one, and any wrong moment would result in her death.

"I'll tell you what," said Celsus easily, lips curving upwards in a light smile this time. "Let her go, and I'll have fun with you. I'm sure I'm better company than her, anyway. What use is it beating up someone who can't fight back?"

Painite watched the knight leisurely, smiling as if there was no trouble in the world that could reach her. And really, she was feeling quite the same. The rush of power that came with being able to do what she did, pulling starseeds and causing terror, was intoxicating. It left her feeling languid, and tense all at once. Like she might explode at any moment, and even she wouldn't see it coming.

But it would be damn fun.

"That's a very nice offer. Come here, little boy, I have a gift for you."

Painite moved toward him, dragging her hostage, who had given up on the whole walking thing, with her. The girl cried and gagged, choking on her own fear and pain. She was a quivering mess, and her eyes rested on Celsus with a desperate sort of hope in them. She knew that he was the only one there, the only one who could save him.

The light of that hope in her eyes faded and a gasp rose in her throat. She shuddered, and slumped against the Negaverse General, who was now resting her chin on the woman's head, one arm holding the body up like it was a stuffed animal and she was a child.

She held out her hand, a slightly broken starseed glimmering in her palm.

"There. That's the life you were trying to save just now. How did all that talking work out for you? Is this what you wanted?"

Painite hated the idea of talking to her enemies. Save mocking them, and playing with them, there was no point trying to have a meaningful conversation with them. Why it was such a big craze right now was beyond her: all she wanted to do was crush them. All of them. Was that so much to ask?

Little boy was mildly degrading, but Celsus took it in stride, still moving slowly, languidly towards the General and her prey. She was dragging her backwards now, and Celsus felt his body tensing, the smile slipping from her face as the civilian's jaw slackened.

"Wait!" he shouted, dropping all pretense, and lunging forward. "No - !"

He was too late. The starseed sat in the palm of the General's hand, glinting dully in the late night air. Celsus stared at it, fingers still outstretched in vain, his heart hammering in his chest, feeling the last few dregs of his false bravado dissipating, replaced by a frustration and an anger that seemed to vibrate within him.

"That wasn't very nice."

With a growl, he leapt forward, swinging his fist towards her face.

Painite grinned, about to say something witty and villainous, but the attack cut her off. She pulled herself backwards and felt his knuckles scrape her jaw, turning her head slightly as she hissed through her teeth and coiled backwards, letting the body drop.

She summoned her spear to her hand, the magical tip glinting purple in the low light.

"Oh, angry now, aren't we?" She felt like a cat with a mouse, though this mouse was admittedly fighting back much harder than they usually did. That just made it more fun. She didn't just have to cause fear and break spirits: she liked to let the good guys stew in their impotence, let them know that there was no beating Chaos and the Negaverse. Nothing they did mattered, because the lives they swore to protect were still helpless fodder to the 'bad guys'.

Painite loved being a bad guy, and embraced it with all that she was. There would be no changing of image with her: she wanted everyone to know just how powerful and serious the Negaverse was.

"Come on then!" She laughed and charged forward again, bringing her spear up at her side, stabbing forward.

He was probably getting in over his head with fighting a General, especially since Celsus was still under the impression that his somewhat successful (except not really) battle with Benitoite had been somewhat of a fluke. Where Benitoite had been calm and almost gentlemanlike, this one was brutal, her eyes filled with anger and hate and determination.

His punch landed against her jaw, though it was a glancing blow, hardly much of anything. It was, to say the least, nothing compared to the spear that caught Celsus against his side, sending him staggering sideways, gasping in pain and surprise. He gritted his teeth, his hand reaching out to grip the end of the spear, yanking it away from himself as he pressed his other hand to his torso, feeling a sticky wet warmth against his fingers.

"Not angry," said Celsus, gripping the spear a little tighter. "Indignant, perhaps, or maybe just frustrated with you lot at the moment."

He spun around, raising his leg in a roundhouse kick to try and catch her off guard.

General Painite was not much like many of the other soldiers in the Negaverse, though she aimed to change that. This new, soft version of the forces of Chaos did not really sit well with her, or she just did not jive with them. She felt like she was built to cause damage and fear.

The last thing she was going to do was hide it.

She saw the blood and felt an electric pulse of excitement move through her, from the top of her spine to the bottom. She loved it, she really did. She grinned and let him hold on to the spear, alert but also focused on making him bleed more. When he kicked at her she had to release her spear to get out of the way, and even then she got kicked and staggered because of it.

It wasn't a worry, letting go of her spear, she knew she could banish it and call it back to her if she needed to. And it was fun to see her enemies thinking they had some sort of advantage if she didn't have it. She was still strong, just not bladed any more. Laughing, she opted to lunge at him, aiming to tackle him as hard as she could.

The cut wasn't as deep as it could have been with such a weapon, Celsus even going so far as to call it shallow - but it was in an awkward, unpleasant place that made moving (and sometimes just breathing heavily) difficult and painful. Celsus took a step backwards, his hand still pressed firm against his torso, catching the look of gleeful malice in the General's eyes.

This was not going to end well, he knew that. Still, it wouldn't do to just sit and let himself go down without at least some semblance of a fight.

The spear slipped from his fingers as she rushed him, clattering noisily to the ground, and Celsus collapsed beneath the unexpected weight, his head falling back, hitting the ground with a tight gasp of mingled surprise and pain. She had winded him, but Celsus drew in a hissed breath through his teeth, letting go of his side to grapple with her hands, attempting to drag them away from him.

He raised his knee, pressing it into her midsection, and attempted to throw her off.

Oh, Painite did enjoy cutting Order floozies down piece by piece with her spear. She'd tear them apart with her bare hands if she could, but that was a level of violence that even she hadn't quite reached yet. Instead, her spear would more than do for her methods and needs.

She was still small, despite her strength at this stage, and that played against her as he grappled with him. Though she could probably out muscle him, she couldn't get her shorter arms to do just as she needed them to, and her smaller frame was rather easy to toss from him as he pushed his knee up.

If only she was able to make herself heavier by some trick of the mind or something, to match the power she wanted to wield. Instead, she was tossed away from him like a little doll and she quickly got to her feet and dusted herself off, looking indignant and maybe a bit embarrassed.

She called her weapon to her hand and leveled an angry glare at him.

"That was the only hit you'll get," she growled, then she moved, bringing her spear around, stabbing at him in a fairly blind charge. It hurt her pride whenever a Knight got any kind of one up on her, to the point where she stopped thinking of anything but destroying them.

She was small, yes, but with a strength that definitely belied her shorter stature. The General's fury and hatred of him was paramount to her abilities, and Celsus knew instinctively that she would not let him get away so easily after he had thrown her off.

He got quickly to his feet again, breathing heavily. Anger was flashing in her eyes, and Celsus felt his heartbeat quicken as she dived forward, the end of her spear catching his side as he tried to sidestep it. Pain shivered up his abdomen, and he flinched, letting out a gasp of surprise, trying to twist around and knock the spear away, though the most he could do was grasp her wrist.

"Oh, well, that's good to know," said Celsus, throwing on a smile. "I'm glad to see that someone like you can tell the future, really that's a useful ability."

Painite was enjoying herself, but it often got lost in her rage when it came to knights. Or, increasingly, anything on the White Moon side. When once she had a tolerance for the Chibi Senshi and the Cats, because they were cute and innocent for the most part, she now found she wouldn't hesitate to attack them.

So trying to kill a knight was effortless for her, in that she needed no help to justify it in her mind.

She grinned at the sight of his blood, as if it only incensed her more. She just wanted to attack him, to slaughter him, and to see all his blood spilling out while she pulled his starseed. If he lived long enough to feel her hand in his chest, so much the better, but now it wasn't absolutely necessary.

"I do like it," she said, going with his teasing. "makes these kinds of things easier on everyone. Just accept your fate and die like a good little guy."

He was losing strength rapidly, his vision wavering. Celsus staggered, his grip loosening around the General's wrist, and he dropped to his knees, breathing heavily. For a moment he thought he might pass out, blackness passing across his eyes, but he shook his head, trying to clear it, and the blackness dissipated.

"Sorry," he said through clenched teeth, with a crooked grin. "But I can't die. Not yet."

He gripped the spear, less like he wanted to pull it away and more like he was simply grasping something to keep himself from falling over, Celsus's other hand pressed against the wound on his side.

"Besides," he added, looking up at her. "Wouldn't killing me just be pointless? I am, after all, hardly a trophy to be one. There are bigger fish than me to fry, if you catch my drift."

Painite smiled at him, watching as his skin paled and letting him think he had the strength to keep on fighting her. He would lose eventually, she knew he was in over his head. So did he, but his defiance was admirable, in its way.

Her smile was cold, though, lacking anything close to pity for him. Sure, she admired his will, but that just made her want to snuff it out more.

"Oh, I'm going to get you all eventually. So each death has meaning, at least to me. But in the scheme of things, you're right. Your death is just going to be another drop in the bucket. Does that make you feel better? I'll get your leaders too: you're just the first little stepping stone."

She grinned at him, then jerked her arm back and pulled her spear from him, lashing out at him again just as the sirens of approaching emergency vehicles hit the air. Had someone seen them? Called the police? She couldn't afford to be caught right now, not when she was planning something bigger than herself. She snarled.

"Just remember, you're only alive because I let you. Call me soft hearted. But I'll be back to finish the job." She glanced over her shoulder, thought she saw a flashing light, then teleported away.
