The new Negaverse Lieutenant had a lot to think about, and he did it while plodding along, on his own once again despite advice to seek out partners and get training in. But he was trying to do just that: he couldn't teleport, and he couldn't really follow these strange feelings that popped up in the back of his head.
It was hard to tell what they all meant, and most of the time he didn't even notice them until they were gone, and he realized he had missed his chance to go and find another powered up person.
Everything felt muddled, and he wondered if he was just not good at sensing auras. Like that was one of his senses that had not developed right, and when he was awakened he was just naturally bad at it. Or he supposed he just needed to keep using it, and pay more attention, and get used to the whole thing.
But it was such a small detail. It would slow him down and he had so much more to focus on that he wasn't sure he had the time or attention to spare to something like that.
So he ignored the auras for now, thinking they were all just other Negaverse soldiers and not realizing he could feel his enemies too. He was walking along, glancing around, looking for something to get himself stronger and to prove he belonged to be here. He needed to get ahead of the game: he needed to leave the gate with a big bang, so they knew he meant business.
But he had no idea what sort of work he was really expected to do, beyond being told he had enemies he needed to defeat. He'd just have to wing it for now, he thought to himself, as he walked down the darkened street.

Surprisingly, he had not dealt with very many Negaverse agents.
Celsus supposed that it was partially because the Dark Mirror and the Knights had somehow seemed more balanced, as though they were opposites in a way. Whether or not this was true was probably inside of his own mind, and with the exception of the General that had kicked his very sorry arse, his knowledge of the Negaverse was relatively limited.
He found him on the edge of a deserted street, in the lesser lit part of town.
Celsus, perched in the windowsill of an abandoned building that had once been a warehouse of sorts, watched the young man as he passed, apparently oblivious to the presence of someone else. When he was a few yards away, Celsus unfolded his legs and dropped silently down to the street behind him, slipping his hands into the pockets of his trousers.
"Nice night for a walk, wouldn't you say?"

Merlinite tried not to jump, but it was hard to stop oneself in the middle of an action. He hadn't realized the others aura had been so close, and he looked over to see the knight before really being able to comprehend the different in the 'feel' around him. He was definitely not like the other Negaverse agents he had met before.
So this was probably one of the ones he was supposed to defeat, right?
Right.
"Nice enough, I guess. What are you supposed to be?" He watched the other warily, now getting a sense of discomfort and distrust. He didn't like the way the other felt, like there was something obnoxiously righteous even though the other had barely said two words. He felt like a voice in the back of his head was telling him that this guy was a jerk, or that he was somehow of the mind that he was better than Merlinite.
He didn't realize it was the difference between Order and Chaos that he was feeling, and his natural reaction to it was to dislike it. It didn't matter what terms he put to it, it was just his instincts.

Celsus was smiling genially as the other turned around, looking as casual as you please and not like he was talking to a member of the opposite side. The other was not familiar, but that didn't change the smile from his face.
"Ah, now that is a curious question," said Celsus, with a raise of his brows. "What am I? Well, I'm a Brit, a twin brother, a painter, an artist, a general miscreant of knowledge, a paradox..."
He smiled. "I could go on and on, but what I really am, and what you're really asking, is that I am Celsus - a Squire of Chronos."
He ducked low in a sweeping bow. "At your service."

"Squire?"
Great, he hadn't heard of those before. What did that mean? Was he still one of those knights? It was a knight-ish word. Maybe he was a stronger one, like the Captains and Generals were. He still couldn't tell the difference between levels of power, because he had not really experienced everything.
He'd learn as he went.
"Well, Celsus, I think you and I are supposed to fight, eh? You're not at my service at all, unless you really do want to help me hunt your kind down and get you out of our way."
He grinned. That did seem like the plan, and it sounded good to him. That worked for him. He wanted to prove himself so badly: maybe killing someone would really put him on the mark. Sure, this guy might not be at the same level as him, but did that really make a difference?
He'd find out.

Celsus raised his eyebrows. "Why do you say that as though you don't recognize the word?" he asked lightly, tilting his head to the side a little. "Squire, yes, as in a Knight of Chronos - though not quite at that level yet, unfortunately."
He gave a small laugh and shook his head, clicking his tongue disapprovingly. "Are we now? My my, but you're a straightforward sort, aren't you? And quite hung up on all the wrong ideals, it seemed, which really is quite disappointing."
He held out his arms, as though inviting the other forward.
"Well? If we're to fight, then have at it, my good man."

How did he do this again? He had a weapon, that little club of his, but he was not used to calling it to his hand. It was tucked away in space somewhere and he just needed to have it in his palm... just thinking about it seemed to do the trick, though, as he found himself gripping the baton soon enough.
He grinned at it, as if glad to see it, like an old friend. Though really he was just glad that he had managed to get it to come back, just as he had been glad that he could power up when he needed to.
Maybe he was already getting the hang of it. He was going to kick butt in this Negaverse, he was sure of it!
"I don't have any ideals, buddy. I'm just here to do my best and to move up in the world. I'm supposed to beat you, so I will. That's it. Makes it pretty easy, right?" He grinned and charged. He had very little fight training, and he did not really grasp that different ranks meant different strengths. But he'd learn it all eventually.
Usually the hard way.

He could fight back with all of his strength, he supposed. Show the new recruit (since it looked as though he wasn't quite as far along as some of the other agents he had met, and the power signature was significantly weaker than his own) that it wouldn't do well to fight too hard too fast.
Or he could just have fun with it, like he always did. Celsus opted for the latter.
Which meant when the other dived for him, Celsus merely took a step to the side, stuck his foot out, and slammed a kick to the Lieutenant's ankle to trip him.

Merlinite had not been around that long, true enough, but he was hoping that didn't show. He was pretty sure it didn't. He had all the grace and confidence of a General, obviously, and could easily pass for it! He wanted to be the very best.
And not just while playing pokemon, obviously.
Merlinite saw the move coming and yanked his foot up in time to avoid getting his ankle knocked out from under him, though it left him a little off balance and he yanked himself around to catch himself. Thankfully, he had been training to be a police officer for some time, and he had those skills to draw from where his training from the negaverse lacked.
Since it hadn't really started yet.
"You think you're pretty awesome, eh?" He grinned, full of confidence he had not earned yet.

Celsus grinned, clearly amused that the other had managed to pull himself away in time to miss the obvious trip. He slipped his hands back into his pockets and said casually, "All things considered, why yes, I do consider myself to be quite awesome."
The smile was bright, blinding. "I'm so glad someone else noticed this!"
He spun around, this time aiming a roundhouse kick to the Lieutenant's side, his eyes dancing merrily.

Merlinite rolled his eyes, but he wasn't daunted. How could he be? He had no bar to compare anything to, no experience to draw from. He wasn't a cautious sort, so instead of proceeding like he might be out of his depth, he charged in like he was already on the top.
He'd learn eventually, that not all Knights and Negas were made equally.
Though, if he'd known about the beating the knight had taken from his newest mentor (she just didn't know it yet), he might have had a few choice quips. Instead, he'd barely learned Painite's name, much less her fight list.
And if things were going to go as badly as they looked like they might, he realized as the kick landed and he was sent sprawling sideways by the surprise strength behind the hit, he might not bring this up at all. He hadn't been expecting that kind of power, and he wondered if he wasn't doing something right. Could he hit that hard?
He'd try it.
Lunging low, he moved to swing his baton for Celsus' midsection.

Celsus decided that he was enjoying this.
It had been a long time since he had met someone this new to Destiny City, and even more so a new member of the Negaverse. It was somewhat like a new toy - in a manner of speaking, of course, and considering that Celsus's last encounter with the Negaverse had not exactly gone as planned, this was much more entertaining.
The baton smacked hard into Celsus's side, and he winced a little, a pout forming on his lips as he said, "Well, that wasn't very nice."
He grabbed the wrist that held the baton and twisted around, holding it against the Lieutenant's back as his other hand pressed to his own side.
"Ow."

Okay, so this wasn't going very well.
So maybe the fact that his aura was starting to feel a little different to his own, now that he was thinking about it. A little stronger, maybe. Okay. Maybe a lot stronger. And obviously he'd been around the block a few times.
Thinking about it tactically, he was way in over his head and was probably ********.
So he needed to rethink his strategy, as his arm was pulled behind his back. He needed to find a fast way to get the hell out of dodge, recoop, and try it again with someone more his own speed. The mistake here was just one of inexperience, clearly. He could not have foreseen something like this!
He shoved himself backwards in an effort to get free, throwing as much of his weight into it as he possibly could.

Unfortunately for Celsus, there happened to be a building behind him. So when the Lieutenant pushed backwards abruptly, Celsus staggered, slamming back into brick wall rather painfully, and letting out a hiss of pain, his head stinging.
"You're a fast learner," he gasped out, wincing, and shoved hard, pushing the other away from him. Leaning back against the wall, he rubbed a hand across his forehead and smiled.
"You're not gonna give me your name?" Celsus teased. "Isn't that how all blind dates start?"

Merlinite hurt him! Score one point for the negaverse! How many points did he need to win? He doubted the answer was one, but he still got pretty excited about it. This was his first real fight, after all, and he had managed to hurt someone.
His brain was leaping forward to what it would be like to win, or do some real damage, but that was a little too ambitious.
When the other shoved him, he got another taste of the difference in their power levels, stumbling backwards and very nearly falling on his butt, only saved for some wild jerking of his upper body to counter balance the weird angle his feet were traveling in.
"Oh, I'm sorry, darling, I didn't mean to insult you." Merlinite grinned, excited now and ready to continue despite his earlier worries. He was pretty sure he was doing alright now, so why worry? "My name's Merlinite." He said it with all the pride in the world, as if declaring a grand title, even though he was just a lieutenant.
