After moving into the apartment above her uncles mechanic shop, Regan felt she could finally aim to have belongings. She didn't have to fear them being destroyed by her father, or classmates. She could leave books at home, safe from the reign of fury of her bullies who wouldn't hesitate to dump her backpack in the school's swimming pool.

Or the toy models she had started to get from Chase, that she loved to build. She could actually keep some in her apartment. Decorate. Take time to truly build them and show them off.

It was...scary. He could come in any minute, like her father, and tear everything she was slowly back up, down to the ground. She dug her fingers in the backback slung around her shoulders. Blue eyes gazed over a bookstore before popping into it. She went to the area where they had models first, picking out a couple of her favorites. Chase had given her a very moderate allowance, so she took advantage of it. There was a mustang, a GT Shelby, A Chevelle and some tools she didn't have placed in her basket. Then she slowly moved over to the books.

She could find manuals on new cars, or maybe check out the young teen books. Perhaps she could find something to get started in. She stared blankly at the two sections, debating over which to choose.

Fritz had been doing everything in his power to not sit around at home and dwell on everything that had been happening as of late. What with the train incident and his brother, as well as bloody Hitch and his bloody alter ego, things were more than a little stressful. He'd tried - and failed - to immerse himself in his painting, but when that hadn't worked, he'd decided it was time to leave the apartment.

The bookstore was a frequent haunt, and he spent a great deal of time especially in the romance section, flipping idly through the newest releases and debating whether or not he could use anything from them as plot fodder for his online stories. The webcomic that he produced with Tolliver was currently on hiatus, thanks to a certain twin, and much to the annoyance of all of their followers, but there was nothing to be done about that.

Holding a book with a particularly racy cover on the front (a bare-chested pirate clutching a dramatically dressed woman who was clearly meant to be of a higher class, both of them bent into absolutely ridiculous poses), Fritz's eyes were skimming the pages, not noticing until he was a few feet away that there was a girl standing just ahead, staring resolutely at...well, he didn't know exactly what.

"Looking for something?" he asked her mildly, leaning out from around his book and glancing to see where she was. "Need help?"

Regan was almost turning into the section for young teens when Fritz came up to her. It was hard not to stare up at the man for a moment and wonder why he bothered talking to her. After all, she was just...some girl in a bookstore.

Not the ideal pick up location. Or perhaps he was after some fun, make fun of the girl with little models in her basket and car magazines. Her face went from awe to stoic in half a second.

Her gaze finally fell to the book in his hands and she stared at it.

"I do not." She turned on her heel. Then looked over her shoulder to make sure he didn't follow her.

Either he'd offended her with his choice of reading material, or she was simply just one of those people that disliked conversing with strangers in the middle of shopping. Whatever the case was, Fritz just raised an eyebrow and offered her a smile.

And still promptly trailed after her.

"Hey now," he said lightly, stuffing a hand into his pocket - the hand not currently holding the dirty romance novel. "I didn't mean to be rude, you just seemed a little lost. Or a little undecided, either one. I just wanted to know if I could help, though I apologize if I offended you in some way."

He WAS following her! She tried to sharp corner turn into somewhere else and found herself looking at the wall of the bookshop. Damn. Now she had to turn and face him and that was just.

Her hands tightened on her basket, the anxiety of bullying rose up and made her want to close off even tighter. She was a big girl though. She was, in short, an adult. And she could handle this like an adult.

"I apologize." She felt a little trapped, and guilty. He sounded so sincere. "I am not used to be talked to." She stiffly shifted the basket and looked at his novel again. Then made a face.

It was hard to converse with a man when porn was practically flaunted in her face.

He was genuinely trying not to be a creep about everything, Fritz following after her while still attempting to maintain a reasonable distance, red hair swinging against the sides of his face. Her apology made him smile, and he lifted a hand, waving.

"No apologies necessary, I was just concerned," he said, and then caught where she was looking, as well as the expression on her face. Fritz let out a merry laugh.

"Not a big fan of Harlequin Romances, I take it? Is that what's putting you off of me?"

Her eyes narrowed.

"It is fantasy. There is no such thing as real love." She could see that, with her parents. They didn't last long, after her dad lost his job. Even after that, she felt no love from him. She was after all, a reminder of her mother.

"It makes you look like a flirt." She added, "Are you flirting with me?"

Cue the stoic face.

He looked downright aghast at such a notion.

"Of course there is such a thing as real love," Fritz said dramatically, waving a hand. "Okay, well, the romance novels such as these possibly aren't the best choice, but believe me, my dear, there is absolutely such a thing as romance, even if you can't see it."

There was a long pause. He stared at her, eyebrows raised.

"I don't know," he said, head tilted to the side, a look of amusement in his eyes. "Am I?"

She made a scoffing sound, as she finally found the aisle she wanted. Car magazines were thrown into her basket.

She debated over the thought she wanted to say.

"I see. Well, I hope your notion of love, you can find soon." Because she was so skeptical of it, that it just didn't seem like it could ever exist.

The long stare made her uncomfortable and she suddenly felt super guilty about asking him, or even assuming. Which made her turn off and she just stalked past him now.

"Excuse me. I have to go...." Was all she offered as she moved away. Realizing that she was heading the wrong way. She turned and passed him again to go to the register.

He had never before met a young woman who did not believe in love. It was rather astounding, Fritz stared after her, not even registering the car magazines that she was tossing into her basket, and reminded himself, a little belatedly, that following after young women in stores was vaguely creepy.

"Wait, wait," said Fritz, doing it anyway. "Look, seriously, I'm not being flippant, or flirting, I'm just curious - you really don't believe in love?"

Well now she was invested in proving her point. And since he looked earnest in not hitting on her. Which was fine....she stopped and turned again, shuffling the basket.

"How can I believe in something that is suppose to be forever, when it changes constantly and hurts people." Her eyes shone with a sort of...hurt of her own. Her parents had loved each other at once. And then her mother left, and her father changed.

"Love is not real, it's a illusion to control each other. These books?" She pointed to it, "Are fantasy of women who want nothing more then a man to control them and their emotions. And vice versa." She huffed and then looked at her cars.

"Love is not real."

He couldn't say he didn't understand her point of view. Fritz thought painfully of Tolliver and then banished it from his head, exhaling a breath, because that was a different kind of love, the familial type of love, not the romantic kind that this girl was talking about. And yet he could tell, from that look in her eyes, that something was deeper set in her heart.

"These books?" said Fritz, holding up his romance novel, a little smile on his face. "These are just trashy sex novels, not love. I understand that well enough as it is, they're still fun to read, though, even if the plots leave a lot to be desired. But I have always believed in love itself, because love is something that is real, darling."

He let his arm fall to his side again, Fritz scrutinizing her.

"You genuinely don't think that something as pure as that exists?"

She didn't know if she struck a chord against him, or if her words irritated him, but she didn't really care. She was use to saying something that upset someone. He was just less physical then the girls at her school or her father at home.

Thank god for public settings.

"Why do you read trashy sex novels." She made /the face/ and then shuffled her basket. Like she hadn't thought of him a true pervert but perhaps he really was.

"There is nothing pure in this world." She looked away. She had spoken so much, she just felt exhausted now. He wouldn't understand, and she wasn't privy of explaining to him. She refused to look at herself as a sob story. No, she was a testament to what she preached.

Fritz just gave a look right back.

"Why shouldn't people read things that they enjoy?" he asked mildly. "I mean, I don't read them for the sexy parts, that's just a bonus, I read them because they're just fun to read. Isn't that the point of reading and watching things? You do it because it's fun."

His eyebrows drew together as he watched her, gaze briefly flickering to his basket, and then back to the girl's face again.

"There's always something pure in the world," said Fritz with a grin. "You just don't think there is."

She was going to apologize. Cause she understood things for fun. After all she had her cars and her models.

Who was she to judge? But she felt like she was on the defense. So the more they talked, the more she wanted to close in and set up the lashing. Anything, she thought, to drive him away. Drive them all away.

"No. I don't." She made it to the register and set up her basket. Nothing more to say. Her point had been made, why did he still talk to her? She didn't know.

Maybe silence would be the final act.
