"And - there."

Fritz hit enter on the keyboard of his computer, leaned back in his seat, and gave a satisfied smile to the screen he was currently looking at. The comic was uploaded, right on schedule, and just in time for Fritz to slip out and grab a cup of coffee while he waited for Tolliver to get home.

He signed off, grabbed his coat, and slipped from the loft, heading down the pedestrian-lined streets towards the little cafe he frequented. It was crowded, as usual, but considering Fritz's status as a regular, he managed to wiggle in and snag a free table, ordering a cup of steaming black coffee as he settled down in one of the metal chairs.

The webcomic was doing better than he could have hoped, for being just a silly comic about everyday life, and Fritz was rather satisfied with it. They had gone on a bit of a hiatus during Tolliver's motorcycle accident, but now it was up and running once more and their beloved and dedicated fans would not have to wait.

Perhaps it wasn't the most lucrative business, but it certainly was entertaining.

Esme was on this update like the very overused cliche of white on rice.

Which was just in time too! She was just moments away from heading out so that she could meet one the comic's artist. Her eyes scurried over its contents as her lips contorted with glee. Oooh my goooosh there were just so many good gems in this update. The brothers made it SO EASY for her to pair all these couples together. Was this intentional? Did they do it JUST FOR HER? They had to. A comic just for Esme Blanchard.

WELL, regardless! The obsessed fan wanted to meet and greet this maestro, get his autograph, and ask for opinions on her newest fanfiction installment. And... this obsessed fan was LATE. Esme squeaked as she gathered up her stuff, and squeaked when she was just out the door as she realized that she had forgotten her jacket, and squeaked when she forgot that she left the door unlocked.

When Esme came into the cafe, she was out of breath but still with a huuuge grin on her face. She wouldn't let her goof ups get in the way of a GOOD TIME.

Was that him sitting over there? Fritz? The guy sitting by himself? WELL, regardless! Esme just marched right over and sat herself down. "Whew, sorry I'm late!"

Hopefully that was Fritz.

The breathless voice that reached his ears sounded excited. Fritz glanced up from his cup of coffee and smiled at the light haired girl that accompanied the voice - a girl who had just taken the seat across from him, looking at him with bright eyes.

"Are you Esme?" he said cheerfully, setting his coffee down. "The one who sent me those emails?"

"Hey! Yeah! Are you Fritz? Ah.. ehehe.. of course you are. Who else would I send those emails to?" The girl laughed and still smiled, despite her blunder. As mentioned, those goof ups would NOT get in the way of a good time!

"I juuuust saw your update and oooh my goooosh it was so wonderful. I can't believe that Aaron actually DID that! I never woulda called it. But I'm glad he did because it makes so. much. sense." Pause for a beat. "And I really appreciate you taking the time to come down and talk to me!" Esme clapped her hands together. "It means so much! Does this happen often? I mean, you meeting with your fans?"

"I am indeed Fritz," he answered with a smile, and extended his hand towards her in greeting. "Frederick St. James, at your service my dear. I am ever so pleased to be making your acquaintance."

It was perhaps a good thing that Fritz was as laid back as he was, since Esme's babble of talking only made his smile widen as he took a sip of his coffee, hiding his expression behind it.

"Not usually," he said cheerfully. "I like my anonymity, after all. But it's always gratifying to know that one's work is appreciated as much as you appreciate it.

"So tell me," said Fritz, and sat up in a businesslike manner. "This is a very serious question:

"Do you prefer Aaron with Michael or with Katie?"

Esme reached over and took his hand. Was she supposed to shake it? No.. NAW. She squeezed it, like she'd do with any dear friend of hers. Because Frederick St. James was automatically in the dear friend category. That's how things worked with Esme Blanchard.

Not usually, he said. So this was... this was a first...?

If that didn't blow her mind, what he said next just nuclear war'd it. He was asking her for her opinion. On his his own work. This was.. this was totally her day. Esme sat up herself. Shipping was a srs bizness.

"I prefer Aaron with Katie." She paused, letting that sink in. "Not that the pairing with Michael doesn't have its own charm. But in update twenty-six there was that spark between them that I can't deny. Do you remember what they said to each other?"

Yup. She was asking the own creator that question.

it was always nice to hear that the silly little webcomic he and Tolliver produced bi-weekly about six kids and their daily adventures of everyday life (cleverly entitled nothing other than Flipside) had its loyal viewers, especially considering that coming up with the comic in the first place had been a total spur-of-the-moment idea.

Which was why he very much appreciated any and all feedback. Feedback was the life of the product, after all.

"Mm, yes, I see," said Fritz, stroking his chin thoughtfully as he leaned across the table towards Esme, a Very Serious Expression on his face. "You're right - right after Aaron tells Katie that he's going to be starting his own cookbook and she says that she'd support him even if wanted to go be a clown on the moon."

He tapped his pencil against his cheek. "Though we had gotten quite a few comments that said the conversation between Aaron and Michael about Michael moving in with David was meaningful too. But I think the dynamic between Aaron and Katie is much more fun to play with."

Fritz sat back, a satisfied smile on his face. "See, I'm glad I could meet you here today," he said. "Gives me great fodder for our next strip."

He was glad that she came. GLAD. Ohhhh never in the history of a fandom did Esme hear such sweet, lovely words! She was on cloud nine! And ten! Maybe even lifting up to cloud eleven~ Ahhhhh, wistful sigh.

She had that blissful look on when she came to a few seconds after he finished speaking. Blink blink. "Ahahaha, great! Hey ah, I brought a fanfic along too. You wouldn't mind reading it, would you? I mean, if you're not busy!" From her messenger bag she pulled out a huge stack of computer paper, clipped together with a binder clip. This .. was her fanfiction. An eighty page masterpiece. "I got so excited that I guess I wrote a lot.. ehehe."

Esme was a charming girl, Fritz decided. He chewed thoughtfully on the end of his pencil and said curiously, "A fanfic? I don't believe I've read any fanfics of our story. How very intriguing."

He reached out and took it from her, leafing through it with a great deal of interest and growing amazement.

"You wrote all this yourself?"

Late tag is even later. xD

"Ahahaha, yeah! It's just something that I do in my spare time. Though spare time's been getting less and less these days." The young girl sighed and rolled her shoulders. "I could've written a novel instead of a novella with all this juicy material you gave me, buuuuut time is what it is what it is!" She laughed nervously and squirmed a bit in her seat. "So I hope you like it, even though it's so .. short!"

Because eighty-page fanfics were short, apparently. Be easy on her, Fritz! Don't be disappointed!
