Somewhere in the jail, a door slammed.

It echoed down a hallway that had been empty of people, except now held Celsus, a look of drawn frustration on his face that was a stark contrast to his usual mask of lighthearted ease. His fingers were clenched into fists at his side, and somewhere, dimly, he was in a place he shouldn't be.

There were many in the jail, not all of them held behind bars. Celsus pushed open another door and found himself looking at a row of agents, all trapped in their cells, and for a moment he just watched them, his cape billowing out behind him like a ghost.

A strong, terrible desire to throw himself into the fray and lose himself in a fight with one of them, any of them, swept over Celsus, and he stepped closer to one cell, his heart beating rapidly in his chest, his breath caching in his throat.

Wrong, said a soft voice in his head, this is wrong.

But a stronger, more powerful voice whispered They would do the same to us - they have done the same to us, and why should it matter, it's not like you can help anyone anymore, anyway. Pathetic, and Celsus pushed aside the first, shook his head against the last.

He was aware of approaching footsteps but remained where he was, stock still in the dimly lit corridor.

He just wanted to see her. Talk to her for a minute.

Baikal had been in a state of agitation for quite some time now, and it reflected in the heavy falls of her boots, the near permanent scowl settled on dark features as he paced the halls of the prison, just waiting for a chance to catch Amphitrite's cell unguarded so he could make sure she was alright.

He had to help her.

How was he supposed to do that? The place was a fortress, but beyond that, it was filled with Order soldiers, and not all of them were anywhere near as sympathetic as Baikal was where the Negaverse was concerned.

He understood. At least he thought he did. They were at war. There had been casualties on both sides. Blow for blow, Order and Chaos were at each others necks, and had been for a lot longer than the Page had been a part of all this. People did crazy things in the heat of battle, he heard about it all the time, saw it on the news, and was now witnessing it first hand.

But this wasn't right. Order preached about being the good guys, something the page wasn't entirely convinced of thanks to a fateful evening at the carnival. This wasn't good, though. This was extreme.

Turning the corner, Baikal stopped abruptly when he spotted the Knight walking in his direction, and already unhappy features darkened further.

His head was throbbing. He felt a wave of nausea rise in his throat as Celsus stood there, staring at the rows of cells, some occupied and some not. His heartbeat quickened; the footsteps had grown closer, and the man in front of him was entirely unfamiliar.

Celsus lifted his head and regarded the young man. Younger, newer, that much was obvious, and with a expression of displeasure on his face.

At what, though? At this?

"Who are you?" Celsus rasped, and his voice came out unsteady, hoarse.

Whomever Baikal was faced with now, there was no way of knowing if they had a hand in all this or just happened to be here, trying to do whatever they could for damage control. Like the page himself. He knew that, he really did, and yet the scowl remained, and when he answered, his tone wasn't at all friendly.

Not the way a budding page should talk to a Knight.

"Baikal of Mercury." It was almost a growl, and pale eyes skirted away from Celsus and down the row of cells behind him. As if he could see through the walls themselves.

Where is she?

Baikal of Mercury. An unfamiliar name and an unfamiliar face. Celsus stared at him, trying to gauge his thoughts, trying to figure out if the look of desperation in his eyes was because of a desire to help with what they were doing or hinder it.

"Well, Baikal of Mercury," said Celsus flatly. "Unless you're here to add to the conversation - and I don't necessarily mean talking - then I suggest you go back to the others."

His shoulders felt sharp, too tense.

"Are you here to assist me, Baikal?"

Something certainly had the knight up in arms, and Baikal was too new, too tense himself to be able to tell which side of the line the other man fell on. It had him responding in a very guarded fashion, hackles automatically rising.

On the defensive, right out of the gate.

"Well that would depend entirely on what you're trying to accomplish here." A more patient, more level tone would have gone a long way to diffusing the issue, but that wasn't how Baikal went about it. Instead he was snappy, almost condescending.

Babylon would have been disappointed in him.

A look of anger flashed across Celsus' pale, drawn face. The dark circles beneath his eyes seemed more pronounced than ever, and a vein was throbbing in his neck, his fingers shaking as he turned fully to stare at the young man.

A short, surprised bark of laughter escaped him.

"Is that right?" Celsus asked, eyebrows raised as he took a step towards him, hands tucked behind his back to hide the tremor. "My goodness. The new kid on the block has a bit of an attitude to him now, doesn't he? How very...noble of you."

The expression of mock lightness on his face dissolved into hardness.

"Now get out. I have no use for you if all you mean to do is interfere."

He really should have been more worried. He could feel the knight's power coming off him in waves, and there was no way Baikal had any chance in winning if things came to blows, but he found himself standing his ground, molars grinding as he stared back defiantly at the other man.

"And you're going to make me, then? Rough me up as much as you have them?" A sweeping gesture took in the cells around them. "Is that all the white moon is, a bunch of righteous bullies hiding behind a mask of justice?" This wasn't justice.

He felt a wave of anger, of annoyance, though not all of it was directed at the page. Celsus's hands trembled violently, and for a few seconds, he thought he should just walk away and let it go. It would be the best thing, he knew, somewhere in his haze of convoluted thoughts.

He didn't do that. He stepped forward, his face gaunt, his eyes hollowed, the paleness of his skin sickly rather than healthy.

"You know," said Celsus, and he kept walking, his voice a low hiss, "Nothing. Who are you to tell me what it is to do? You've been one of us for what, a few weeks? A few days? You haven't seen what they've done to us, what they've done to me - "

His finger, snapping under Jet's careless grasp. His face bloodied and bruised, cuffs digging into his skin.

Celsus shook his head, trying to dispel the images from his mind.

"Unless you have something to contribute, get out. And stop pretending that you know better than I do when I've been here for years and you're still getting your toes wet."

Baikal didn't back up, but rather stood his ground at the knight crowded into his personal space. If the other man thought he'd back down, he was sorely mistaken. He might have been out ranked, but that didn't mean the ginger was getting instant respect, that had to be earned. And this little display of a short fuse and a hot temper certainly wasn't going to do that.

"So what, you're going to turn around and do the exact same thing?" He wasn't sure he believed it, but the argument was still sound, so he kept with it. "Every awful thing they apparently did to you and your friends, your going to do it right back? And you call that, what? Righteousness? Revenge?"

He laughed, but not like it was funny. More ironic. Sad, really. "You're supposed to be the good guys, I thought." He gestured to the side, at one of the cells. "Does this look like something a hero would do?" Baikal snorted, shaking his head.

"This is torture, and it's disgusting." The page was leaning in now, invading Celsus space right back. "There's no difference between you and them."

And with that, the blonde turned, stomping off back down the hall to disappear around a corner. It was clear, talking things through wasn't going to change any minds here. He'd have to figure out a better way to help the agents that were being kept here.
