American fast food places are so...

...fast.

Fritz stood with his wallet out in one hand, the other absently twisting a quarter between his fingers as he looked up at the menu flashing on the wide screen above him. Around him there were voices shouting orders, the clank of change in the dispenser, beeps of various cooking things, as well as the smell of French fries and burgers and salt.

Lots of salt.

Fast food, however, was one of Fritz's secret weaknesses. Tolliver always rolled his eyes at the thought, preferring actual sit-down restaurants over these quick ones any day, but Fritz found he rather liked the hustle and bustle in spite of himself.

Which was why he was standing here by himself.

"Two cheeseburgers, large fry, and a chocolate shake, please."

A few moments later, he was sitting at one of the tables, happily scarfing his way through the food. In Fritz's free hand, however, he was idly rolling his yo yo back and forth, up and down, not entirely paying attention to what he was doing. It had become an old habit of his, bringing such a toy, but one that he couldn't seem to break just yet.

Fast food had quickly become a habit in Jett’s life; it wasn’t that he wasn’t capable of making his own meals (though, really, people far younger than him could cook far better than him) or afford to pamper himself with fancy sit down meals.

Jett simply liked fast food. Far too much. It didn’t matter if he worked out, or kept in good shape, at the rate his usual diet was being replaced by fries and burgers, his cholesterol was going to kill him by the time he hit twenty one.

Oh, well.

He’d been to this particular restaurant enough to recognize the workers, and never mind the fact that he didn’t have to look at the menu to know what he wanted; he already had it memorized and recited it with ease.

He hadn’t any work to attend to later; he had no homework, had the day off from the antique store, and could look forward to a lovely dinner—home, alone. Again. Since his mother wasn’t there to cook for (or cook for him, preferably), he’d stopped for his favorite for the third time that week, though this time wasn’t ordering coffee with his meal.

Everything was the same—wait in line, play with his phone, order, play with his phone some more, receive food…

This was an instance where he’d have liked everything to be the same as always.

After receiving food usually came ‘walk home with food’, though the plan was rather abruptly disrupted when he walked by a table, thinking nothing of the boy playing with the yo-yo.

Until the string coiled around his ankle mid-step. He hadn’t seen it to know to avoid it, and by the time he even felt the pressure around his ankle, he was already so severely off balance by the unexpected attachment that he nearly ended up face down on the ground.

The save was just barely that; he’d managed to hop—albeit awkward and embarrassing as the situation was—and slammed his fist down on Fritz’s table to catch himself.

Thankfully, Jett had skipped on the coffee, or he’d have that embarrassment to deal with as well. For a second, he stared down at the table to collect himself and assess the situation, though quickly his eyes made their way to the boy on the other end of the yo-yo, a silent, accusatory look blatantly stamped across his face.

Fritz, of course, was not paying the slightest attention to where exactly his little toy was going. He usually never did, unless he was actually performing for a crowd - which he wasn't, so it was just sort of idly flying around.

So when there was an enormous crash, a few muttered surprises, and lots of confusion, it startled him out of his eating, a few fries going flying.

And suddenly there was a blonde boy staring down accusingly at him with an expression of great irritation.

"Er," said Fritz, a little sheepishly, as he looked at the yo-yo in his hand, as well as the string, which was still wrapped around the ankle of the young man. "Er.........my bad."

Then he quickly dropped down and attempted to untangle the strong from the boy's ankle.

"Sorry about that."

There was something distinctly awkward about some boy probably very near to your age on his knees at your feet, and while Jett had considered letting him stay there and work until he’d finished untying the string, he wasn’t going to subject himself to making any more of a scene. He knelt a bit and swatted at Fritz’ hands. “Get off the floor, you look like a fool. I’ll get it,” he grumbled, moving to sit down at the table across from where Fritz had just been.

His entangled foot remained slightly kicked out so that he wasn’t yanking the toy out of Fritz’s hand or cutting off circulation to his foot. From this angle it was easy to just lean forward and find the twist that had him snagged; he pulled at the plastic yo-yo until it was freed from the string it had become trapped beneath, unwrapped it from around his leg, and then held out the plastic for the male in front of him. “You know, I thought yo-yos went out of style a decade ago. You’ve had a long time to practice since then, haven’t you? …I’m hoping this isn’t a common occurrence, or else you really ought to pick another hobby.”

Fritz, of course, really never cared whether a situation might have been awkward or not, since he was usually the one being ridiculous on purpose. This time, however, tangling up his yo-yo around the legs of a clearly irritated blonde boy, Fritz still did not feel really bad about it - just a bit sheepish.

Except he really didn't expect for the blonde to swat at him like he was some stray animal.

"Ow."

Pushing himself upright, Fritz brushed his red fringe of bangs from his eyes and lifted a brow, slipping his hands into his pockets.

"Things never go out of 'style,'" he replied lightly before reaching out to accept the little trinket, sticking it into his pocket. "At least, not in my opinion. I simply do whatever it is that I want to do."

Fritz slid back into his seat, eying the other. He looked...vaguely familiar, as though he might have seen him around somewhere before, but the thought was vague and unformed, and Fritz pushed it aside.

"Don't you go to Horizon?"

While Jett was ready to pick up his food and head out, Fritz’s question made him pause. He glanced up at the male as if to look him over, trying to determine whether or not he looked familiar.

Yep. There was definitely some familiarity. “…Yeah,” he answered after a second. “…Weren’t you…”

His voice trailed off; after the scene they’d just had, he wasn’t sure if everyone was done staring, so he made sure to phrase his question in such a way that wouldn’t make the two look any more suspicious.

“…In the Surrounding, too?” He squinted his eyes just slightly as he analyzed the male. “…Unless you’ve got a twin or something, I’d just about bet money on it.”

Fritz waited for him to finish the sentence, taking a fry and idly chewing on it while he scrutinized the other. The blonde hair was familiar...as was the somewhat abrasive attitude, for that matter. But he could not quite place him.

At least not until the next words out of his mouth were "...in the Surrounding too?"

One eyebrow lifted.

"Well, I do have a twin, as a matter of fact," replied Fritz easily, picking up a fry and dipping it in a generous helping of fry sauce before sticking it in his mouth, a crooked sort of smile on his freckled face.

"But yes, I was there."

Jett was once more stalled from leaving. "Oh, is that so?" he prompted, though there was little actual curiosity behind it. Instead of standing up, he opened up his paper bag of food and withdrew a fry for himself. "Well, that's a nice coincidence. Seems like everyone's trying to keep the whole thing hush-hush these days. I wasn't really sure what happened to everyone else up there. Good to see you alive and in one piece," he said, despite having no emotional connection to the male across from him. "Don't suppose you ever caught the real story behind what happened up there?" he asked, leaning back in his chair as he observed the male. It wasn't that he really suspected Fritz knew anything, just that he couldn't resist asking. He still very much wanted his answers, and just because no one seemed able to supply them wasn't going to deter him from pestering anyone he could.

Fritz could tell, mostly, that the curiosity in the boy's voice was not really genuine, even as he was pulling out food to eat. He leaned back in his seat, crossing one leg over the other and idly chewed on a French fry.

"No one wants to face it," said Fritz mildly, with a somewhat amused look on his face, despite feeling a definite sense of hostility. He wasn't entirely sure why, considering he did not even know this guy, but to each their own.

"And not entirely; I just sort of...went with the flow, I suppose," he added, and then held out a hand anyway, regardless of the stiffness of the guy across from him.

"I'm Fritz, by the way."

Jett glanced up and nodded, wiping his fingers off on a napkin just for cleanliness’ sake before he extended his hand to the redhead. “Jett,” in introduced in response. He gave the male a firm handshake and kept contact only for as long as was necessary. A prolonged handshake with a girl was fine enough, but Jett wasn’t going to jump into holding hands with a guy unless he was getting something out of it.

He seemed a bit more at peace now that he wasn’t strung up with a yoyo and now that Fritz wasn’t kneeling in front of him. It seemed that the restaurant was keeping to its own schedule now, so he didn’t have to feel self-conscious for anything that had happened in the past few moments.

“You adjusting well to being back home or,” he shrugged again, once more leaning back in his chair. Jett was not shy and didn’t mind asking personal questions—especially to someone that had experienced the same thing as him. Still, he was unable to resist wiping his fingers off again before he snacked at another fry. “Do you ever miss being up there?”

They spoke for a while before parting ways; it was a refreshing experience.
