He had debated for a while about whether to go find the mysterious being; whether he trusted both himself and Caedus - and to be fair, he did not put any stock in the latter. Celsus had said hardly anything throughout the entirety of their initial meeting, preferring mostly to watch, but now things were quieting. Now things were different.

He had not taken one of the crystals. Others had, and he was curious, but Celsus could not have brought himself to take one, even if he'd wanted to.

It wasn't hard to find Caedus. He was in the same spot as he had been the last time Celsus had seen him, beneath the tree, on the top of the hill. Celsus hesitated at the bottom of it and then, ignoring the twisting, nauseated feeling in the pit of his stomach, he began to climb.

When he finally reached the top, he stood there silently, Celsus' cape blowing gently around his ankles, the wind rustling through his hair.

"Good evening," he said quietly, his chest tight with every breath. "Do you mind if I....talk to you..?"

Caedus was still sitting beneath the tree; it seemed he was resting, if only because there was no eerie golden glow from beneath his hood. Celsus' voice seemed to have roused him, if he'd even been sleeping, and his golden eyes opened and immediately focus on the Knight.

"I do not mind," he reassured, though seemed cautious. Celsus seemed tense, and Caedus reciprocated this emotion.

"I expected questions. I welcome yours."

He was silent for a moment. Celsus did not approach closer, and instead stood enough distance apart that should he need to, he would be able to back away and leave at a moment's notice. He held no immediate, vicious desire to attack, but it did not mean that he was not apprehensive about the whole matter.

Celsus swallowed hard, his stomach clenching.

"Well," he said slowly, warily, "I'm not sure what to believe. We've struggled for years in this fruitless war. We've lost many, we've gained others. We've been at each other's throats, and people have been broken apart due to the conflict we've all suffered from."

Including myself.

" - and then all of a sudden, here you are," Celsus continued hoarsely. "You present us with this sudden, magical solution to our problems. Forgive me, but it all seems a bit too convenient. A bit too...easy."

"I would not call this 'all of a sudden'," Caedus replied hesitantly. "This has not been a 'sudden' change for me. I had no control over when I would have left. I know only that I managed to. I am sorry if that is inconvenient to you."

He did not seem as on edge as he had been with the group, but neither did he seem particularly comfortable. He almost even seemed truly apologetic, though the gravely voice distorted it. "I do not think there is anything convenient or easy about this, either. I simply have tools you have yet to discover. I do not know if this is the answer to your problems. But it might be. I have an opportunity for you. That is all. I have made no promises. Except that I can get you to the castle, to strike while they are vulnerable."

"Perhaps not to you," Celsus consented, shifting from one foot to the other. "But for me - for me it's too easy. It's - it's too convenient, you have to see it from the point of view of someone else, someone - someone human."

His voice came out too fast, too rough. His head was pounding, throbbing, and the whispers of inadequate were there, in the back of his mind, pressing against the inside of his skull.

"We're - I'm - " Because he knew, already, there were a great deal of people who had accepted already the solution presented to them. " - I'm just human. I can't do much - " If anything at all. " - and there have been many who have struggled over the years. You come out of nowhere. You say you have a solution. You tell us what we want to hear."

Celsus swallowed hard, the frustration, the self-loathing at his own inability to do anything twisting nauseatingly in his stomach.

"You must know that for some, it's not so easy to trust," he said quietly, voice trembling slightly. "Who's to say you will not turn around and betray us as soon as we enter the castle? Who's to say that those crystals will not one day be our downfall?"

"I suppose only time will determine the validity of my words." Again, he seemed apologetic. "If you are so worried, you do not need to use the crystals…My intention was not to alarm or concern you. It was an offer. I thought we shared a mutual goal."

The more Caedus watched the Knight, the more he was on edge. There were certain things—expression, words, tone, that made him take a small step backwards. Celsus had not moved to attack him, but something about the situation wasn't helping his nerves.

But he did not leave, or ignore Celsus. It was the Knight that was concerning him more than his words.

Reluctantly, he asked, "Are you all right?" He followed the question up with a slow, "You are struggling with something. There is more to this than just me. What is going on?"

He couldn't tell if the simple, unfazed words from the man were frustrating or reassuring. Celsus felt stymied at every turn, at every syllable, as though his wariness over the entire situation was merely inside of his own chaotic head.

Maybe it was. Maybe he was magnifying the situation, letting it grow and fester without intending to.

Inadequate.

Patheticpatheticpatheticpathetic.

Can't even accept help when it's offered, can you?

(You don't deserve the help anyway.)

"Whether or not we appear to share a mutual goal," said Celsus hoarsely, "It leaves a certain sense of unpleasantness in my mouth. I'm sorry, but for all intents and purposes...I cannot trust you. Even - even if I wish I could."

He swallowed hard against the rising nausea in his throat, his mouth opening and closing for a moment, Celsus' shoulders so tense they looked almost sharp in the twilight.

"I..." he said, trying to ignore the tremor to his voice. "I...have not felt...well - it is nothing, I have just...been unwell for a few weeks now."

Pathetic.

Though Caedus seemed disappointed, he did not protest or argue. Celsus' concerns were not really unfounded, and he could respect that. Or, at least, he seemed to respect that. He nodded in what might have been an understanding aspect.

"I think there is more to it than you are letting on. You should take care of yourself. Not feeling well is never 'nothing'. You will not be in top condition if you are feeling unwell. Regardless of if you trust me or not, or if we have a mutual goal. You have things you want to protect," he chanced, "Do you not? …You have worked hard to obtain such power. Usually…those who pursue the power you have…have done so to protect something they care about. Someone. Do they not worry about you when they see you like this?"

He felt like an exposed nerve, raw and open for Caedus to see. A sense of welling frustration that his man he neither trusted nor understood seemed to see straight through to him; and Celsus felt a tremor of fear ripple down his spine.

"That - "

He swallowed hard. The question should have been an easy one, and yet it was not.

"No," whispered Celsus and his eyes closed, as though seeing anything anymore was painful; as though the world around him hurt to look at. "No, we do not share the same goal. There is nothing I can protect anymore, nothing for me to look towards, and no one who would care to see me like this."

Fiona's angry voice wavered in and out of his thoughts - I care about you - but it was a distant memory, as though a foggy memory from a dream.

"I am alone," Celsus said quietly, hoarsely.

Caedus was quiet for a long moment, and then moved, slowly, as if he were concerned with alarming Celsus. He was not comfortable, but it was not a difficult thing to see the Knight before him was struggling, with something. He did not know what, and he did not anticipate that he would ever know. Celsus did not want to open up.

"I want to give you something," he said after a few seconds of fishing around. He pulled out a bag, full of something that clinked. It was different from the bag he'd revealed during the meeting; this one seemed slightly better made. He untied the frayed woven band around it and dug his fingers into it. He was silent as he looked, and then pulled out a very plain, boring looking stone.

It was speckled gray and brown, though it looked smooth, and shiny. There was a finger sized indentation, as though it had been worn smooth.

"This rock is ugly, is it not?" he asked, looking down at it. It was fairly small, only about half the size of his palm. He traced his thumb over it, and gently into the worn out groove. "Will you hold it for me?"

He held it out in his bandaged hand.

"It is not like my other crystals. It does not absorb energy," he attempted to reassure. "It is just an old trinket. But I want to show you something. Hold it in your hand. Move your thumb over it. Please."

His voice was imploring, and he was asking for some minuscule amount of trust. Not in the Negaverse, not with the other crystals.

Just with this.

Celsus' head lifted once more, an expression of immediate suspicion on his face. He shifted warily, not quite backing away, but not quite moving closer either, his eyes following Caedus' movements carefully as he rummaged around.

He did not understand. His head felt foggy, too thickly clogged to understand what was happening, what was being presented to him. Trust was not coming easy to Celsus, who felt as though a simple breeze were about to knock him over, as though he was sinking into a mire he could not escape from.

He swallowed hard, the breaths painful. But after a moment's hesitation, after his heart beating so hard it threatened to break out of his chest, Celsus stretched out a hand towards Caedus and picked up the stone.

It felt small. Celsus pressed his thumb over it.

For a few seconds, nothing happened. It was just a plain, boring stone. But the heat from Celsus' thumb—the pressure he applied—was enough to spark something within the stone. The dull colors peeled back, and it was like a switch had been flipped on. The stone reacted to his touch; suddenly, it was a glimmering, opalescent color. The stone seemed to have a faint glow about it, and lit up in an array of colors in his hand.

Caedus kept his distance, but kept his eye on the stone.

"Humans," he said after a moment, "Can do so much. They are capable of turning something ugly into something beautiful. It is not wrong to worry, or to have doubts. But do not get lost in the ugliness of everything. Good will come."

He shifted positions. "Perhaps you will not see it now, but I hope you understand that in the future. When the time is right. I hope you find what peace you need. Take your worry out on that crystal, when you please. Sometimes it is good to clear the mind."

At the very least, it was a pretty distraction; it was a thousand different colors speckled like a cloud of rainbow stars in the palm of his hand.

He felt rather silly, doing nothing but pressing his finger to the object. Celsus was still wary, still on edge; he wondered if it was some sort of trick - if Caedus was merely trying to drain him of what little energy he had left by pretending to be concerned.

But then something flickered - and Celsus' hollowed eyes widened slightly, his body tensing as the stone exploded into color, cascading across his palm. He gave a startled step backwards, a hoarse cry pulling from his throat and almost dropped it.

His heart was too painful, his chest too tight. Every breath ached, and Celsus lifted his eyes from the rainbow in his hand to the figure in front of him, a look of - not relief, not pleasure on his face, but of a desperation that was deeply, deeply rooted inside of him.

"Why would you give this to me?" he asked hoarsely. "I'm not - worth what you say, I've never - I've never seen the good of this life, only the bad. How can you be certain that this is not all that there is?"

"If you want the honest truth," Caedus began, voice as soft as something so gravely and inhuman could manage, "It is because I am much, much older than you. I have spent a thousand of your years trapped in darkness. Everything I see now is beautiful. Everything outside of that place is seems wonderful."

He glanced around the hill they stood, watching as the breeze danced between the branches and tickled the grass. The way the clouds moved in the sky, or the way the stars and city lights twinkled in the distance.

He looked at Celsus.

"I give it to you because you sound like you have forgotten that there is good in everything. Hope is beautiful. You have lost your own. Perhaps you can borrow someone else's. You will find something, some day. If you keep looking. And all of this darkness, this negativity, will wash away. Everything will mean more to you, because you have made it through the bad. You will find good. Sometimes it is just very good at hiding."

He shrugged; his hands slid back into his robes as another cold wind blew by.

He did not doubt Caedus' age. If there was anything that he could not deny about him, that he could trust of him, it was that, and that alone. The man, whoever he was - if he was even a man - was far beyond Celsus' in terms of how long he had lived in this lifetime.

Or maybe several lifetimes.

Celsus' fingers closed more tightly around the stone in his hand.

"There is no hope left," he whispered raggedly, closing his eyes, and the voices slid between his thoughts like snakes slithering in the grass, soft hisses of inadequate and pathetic whispered in his mind. Celsus brought his free hand up, shaking fingers pressing against his temple, the corners of his eyes burning.

I've forgotten how to find hope again.

He opened his eyes once more.

"Thank you," said Celsus quietly, and everything hurt. "I do not know if I will come back to see you, but we will see."
