Elizabeth's Story

~~~
Elizabeth was born the only child to loving parents in eastern England. Her family was one of many in what was later to be known as 'the old world', living tranquilly among humans, country house, and fox hunts. As a filly, Elizabeth lived an idyllic life, doted on by her parents and the humans they lived with alike. In her particular household, the humans had somewhere taken up the habit of dressing their Soquili in human-esque clothes; consequently, from a young age Elizabeth was decked out in a similar fashion to the young misses of the house; long gowns with full skirts. It took some getting used to a a child, but as Elizabeth grew she came to be proud of her clothing, of her poise in wearing it, and her great modesty. Unusually among Soquili, nakedness was something to be ashamed of in her family and Elizabeth was always careful to keep herself covered.
Things could have continued in this vein for years, and Elizabeth herself never gave any thought to any other sort of life. However, when she was a young adult her world was turned on end when she, along with a few other of the family Soquili, were taken along to 'the new world' when the younger sons of the family got a craving for adventure. Her parents were not among those taken, and it was a wrench like Elizabeth never could have believed. At the time, the only thing they knew of the New World was that it was very far away. Realizing the probability of never seeing each other again was high, her good-byes with her parents were tearful and tender. However, she resolved to carry on the family standards wherever she ended up.
~~~

First arriving in Boston, Elizabeth was soon swept up into a world the like of which she'd never seen. Restless natures and a desire for adventure took her masters further and further west, and the Soquili with them. As they moved along, their lifestyle became simpler and simpler, with the Soquili's wardrobes being diminished to a mere one outfit apiece. Before much longer, Elizabeth realized with growing alarm that the Soquili themselves were starting to thin, being sold or traded to finance the trip for the remainder. Eventually, Elizabeth herself was traded to a new master, the like she'd never seen before.

He was swarthy-skinned, dark haired, and dressed a great deal more immodestly than she herself. Her time with him was brief, as he merely took her from the fort where she'd been traded to what she later learned was a village of humans called the Kawani. There, she was presented to a woman she later learned to be called Cajji, who was the sister of the brave who had brought her. Originally surprised and amused at the appearance of her new mare, Cajji proved to be a kind and understanding mistress who let Elizabeth keep her dress.

~~~
It was a life style change, there were no two ways about it. But at the same time, Elizabeth had seen more changes in the preceding months than she could ever have anticipated. With each new change, she had done her best to adapt without fear, and now in the Kawani village she embraced her new life with quiet aplomb. She learned from the village Soquili where to find good grazing and treats, and accompanied Cajji, a crafter, on her collection trips. She carried things in baskets on her back, which was new but not unpleasant. However, through it all she kept her dress and her string of pearls, along with her intangible treasures of memory and attitude. For although she was a kind mare, Elizabeth was very much the lady. In speech, in manners, and even her expectations from life, she was an old-school lady. Politeness, self-deprecation, extreme courtesy; these were her creed, and she lived by them. Even with the eventual loss of her dress from the elements and wear and tear, she maintained her sense of dignity and modesty.
~~~

In the Kawani village, she made friends with several other Soquili, but her closest friends were both transient. She had at first been confused by the nomadic lifestyle; as a 'kept' Soquili her entire life, the idea of living on her own, always moving and being self-reliant, was unusual and a little intimidating. But she came to be friends first with a wind stallion named Safi, providing friendship first, and later, a far more precious gift in the form of her time when he needed babysitting during the raising of his daughter Saiena.

Helping Safi with Saiena was a wonderful experience for Elizabeth. Though she never spoke of it with anyone, it being an 'unseemly' topic to discuss with males and there being no other female Soquili around, Elizabeth's greatest ambition in life was to have a lifemate and children. She had always had a maternal streak and loved being around children; she couldn't help but size up each new male she met and wonder if he was 'the one.' Unfortunately, circumstances and her natural reserve worked against her, with no knight in shining armor materializing. She was sad, but accepting, and left a blanket invitation for Safi to leave Saiena with her whenever he needed some time.

~~~
Her closest friendship was formed with Zaphiro, a stallion whose handsome face and dazzling blue coat were only gilding on the gentlemanly and kind personality below. Elizabeth fell head over heels for Zaphiro the first time she laid eyes on him, but once again things were not to be anything more than friendship. Although great friends, the relationship never progressed to anything further. By the time Zaphiro told her of his lifemating with Hienna, she had accepted that friendship was all she would ever have and embraced that friendship with her characteristic reserve. In time, she would serve as godmother to Zaphiro's children, grieving the stillbirth of their first twins and assisting in the birth of their triplets some time later. Though the trip to the secluded glen Zaphiro and Hienna called home was time consuming, Elizabeth came to enjoy the journey as an opportunity to think in solitude.
~~~~

As her months with the Kawani faded into years, Elizabeth came to sadly realize that the odds of her fulfilling her dream of lifemating and, more to the point, childbearing were slim to none. For a time, she sank into deep despair over this turn of events, but eventually came to accept her lot with relative good spirits. Never once did it occur to her at that point her life would once again be turned on its head.

However, a random encounter with a pair of brothers from the mountainous north proved pivotal to Elizabeth's future. The older brother, Ambroise, was heir to the protectorship of a their large and close-knit herd; he was also reserved to the point of coldness, practical, and single. Though originally disdainful of all Soquili from the Lowlands, Elizabeth made a favorable impression on him, and he eventually asked her to become his mate. Though taken aback by the offer, as their acquaintance was of short duration, Elizabeth soon accepted on the grounds that their personalities seemed to suit and she had always cherished the idea of children.

~~~
Upon arriving in the lands of the Hourglass Summit, her new home, Elizabeth had to deal with an entirely new set of circumstances. Her tendency towards extreme modesty and self-deprecation meant it was a very long time before she was willing to speak up and give opinions on anything, which was a struggle for her decisive and assertive lifemate Ambroise to deal with. She also had to adapt to the (mostly) human free environment, large number of herdmates, extreme weather, and, most significantly, her lifemate's large family.
However, time and experience were her friends, and Elizabeth bloomed in the new environment. As she learned the ways of the herd, she also came to be be more assertive and confident in her own abilities. A natural healer, she found a role for herself in helping tend to the various injuries of the herd's stallions, many of which served as border guards or in other defensive functions.
Elizabeth's lifelong dream was realized with the birth of their two children, first son Wyeth, then son Raines. Her joy was unparalleled, and hitherto unknown defensive instincts of her own sprang to the fore with motherhood. The most pronounced disagreements from her relationship with Ambroise involved their sons, such as the boys starting combat training at what Elizabeth felt to be much too young an age. However, for the most part she trusts Ambrosie's judgement, and currently reflects proudly on her two grown sons; Wyeth, a border guard in the tradition of his father, and Raines, a free spirit and music lover who travels the lands with a choir of his own direction.
Ladius' Story
Females are weak. Small is bad. There is no way that a small, weak, female can ever hope to hold her own in a world filled with big, tough stallions. A female's place is two steps behind her stallion mate, bearing his foals, agreeing with his life decisions, and generally acquiescing to his every whim.
Yeah...no.
Ladius was born into a family that might, charitably, be called ultra-conservative. Her father completely dominated her mother, who basically had no say in any part of their family's life beyond childcare (and even that was a stretch). Ladius watched and listened as her father chose where they lived, what they ate, whether or not they migrated. He decided when they would have children, chose names for those children, and laid down the law in raising those children, all while playing no part in their day to day lives or taking any responsibility for their care. When asked why he didn't stay with them during the day by one of Ladius' inquiring young siblings, he very seriously told them that 'taing care of baby's was one of the only things a mare was good for, so why would he take that away from their mother?'
Ladius was the fourth child in her family, and the second female. By the time she left home, the family would have added four more sons, and one more daughter. Her older sister, Marily, was the second child in the family and several years older than Ladius. As a small child, Ladius took note of the fact that Marily seemed to be their mother's second; she helped with the younger foals, collected food for the family, kept an eye on things when their mother needed a rest. As the family grew, the job of child care became more taxing, more physically demanding. One day, Ladius was told by her mother that Ladius would have to give up her playtime to help manage her siblings.
Needless to say, this did not strike Ladius as fair. Neither of her older brothers had been asked to help out, nor had her younger-by-a-mere-four mintes twin brother, Steady. As a filly who loved her playtime, her being tapped for a job she didn't want over her older siblings seemed nothing short of grossly unfair. However, when she raised this point with her mother, she was answered with a look of shock and a terse, 'they're boys, Ladius. Besides, you're far too wild and it's about time you started learning to settle down and care for a home. Do you really think your future lifemate is going to want a mate who doesn't know the first thing about raising foals?'
Further probing along this line brought to Ladius' horrified attention that a large part of the reason she was being 'trained in' was that Marily was going to be leaving the family soon; their father had found what he deemed a 'suitable lifemate' for Marily, a much older stallion with values similar to his own. Ladius wasn't exactly close to her sister, but she was close enough to know that this mating was NOT what Marily wanted. And it was a small leap to realize that such would one day be her destiny as well.
In spite of her parents' best attempts, Ladius was still confrontational and direct. Full of righteous indignation, she sought out her father and told him in no uncertain terms that she was just as strong and independant as any of her brothers and that she didn't want to be stuck at home with her siblings. Furthermore, she never wanted to have someone else pick a lifemate for her, and she wasn't going to live a life like her mother's.
Her father's response was to, as he put it, 'beat some respect into her.' When he unceremoniously dumped her bleeding body back with her mother, he proceeded to chew out her mother for not doing her job and suppressing Ladius' unwomanly thoughts and behaviors, and Marily for voicing or showing any discontent with her arranged mating. In no uncertain terms, he laid down the law; mares were small and weak, and dependant on stallions for care and protection. It was for their own good, and they should always trust the judgement of the males in their lives; first father, then mate. Being so small and weak, they could never make it on their own.
As soon as she was well enough, Ladius fled her home and never looked back.
~~~

Adjusting to her new life took time. She might not have always liked it, but her family was all she knew. And even though she didn't agree with her father's ideology, it was what she'd grown up with. Escaping those views took time, and a whole lot of effort.

Things turned around for Ladius when she met Viv, a fiercely independent unicorn mare who not only didn't need a stallion to protect her, stallions needed protection from her. Youthful brutalizations at the hands of stallions had made Viv as anti-stallion as possible, and encouraged her to train to take on any stallion, no matter how much larger he was. When Ladius fell in with her, it was just what both mares needed; a focus, and someone to talk to. Ladius was still young, and she soaked up Viv's teachings like a sponge, both her fighting skills and her attitudes. Viv's beliefs were a perfect counter to her father's, and much more palletable.

However, Ladius took the feminist message to heart, and in time became much more aggressive than Viv. It became a point of honor to her to beat stallions in a fight, and beyond. Almost universally, their behavior was smooth to start, only to rapidly deteriorate when they were beaten. Taking this as confirmation that males couldn't help but be violent, Ladius withdrew further, eventually establishing a territory for herself and aggressively resisting the attempts of any males to set foot there. Although of an age to have a family, the idea of being with a stallion in that way disgusted her, and there were no maternal cravings in her heart to make her want to compromise.

That changed when an alicorn stallion named Artemis Entreri crossed her path. He was a strong and skilled fighter, and that, more importantly paired with his respect for Ladius and her skills, made Ladius rethink her anti-children stance. With herself as the mother and Entreri as the father, the genes would be wonderful; the children could be raised with proper values; girls, to be strong, confident and independant, boys, to be suitably respectful of everyone. When the union produced two daughters, Ladius was initially ecstatic; her daughters would be raised to be strong, powerful, able to defend and care for themselves and have no need to kowtow to any stallion.

Well, things didn't end up working exactly as planned. The older girl, Shiraz, proved to be just about everything Ladius could have wished for. She was strong, fast, and independent; she took to fight training like a duck to water, and it was clear no stallion would ever push her around.

Then, there was Rynia.

Ladius' younger daughter was, in a word, a disappointment. Shy, quiet, timid as a fieldmouse, Rynia was every horrible stereotype of a female Ladius' father had ever said. The only good thing about Rynia was her complete subservience to everything Ladius said; at least Rynia understood the importance of training and her own inherant weaknesses. Rynia was so fearful of stallions that even her own father was terrifying, much to Ladius' chagrin. Ladius hoped Rynia would grow out of her timidity, but it became clear as time passed that Rynia would never improve. Grimly, Ladius determined to knock the timidity out of her daughter, or else. One thing was certain; Rynia could never be allowed to be on her own; Ladius would die of shame if this failure child of hers were ever to procreate.

And Ladius felt she was doing a good job. Every day, she and Rynia would train intensely for the dangers of the world, and patrol their home territory. Ladius let Rynia have a little bit of time to herself each day, but otherwise closely monitored her daughter and her activities. It was a hopeless activity; sometimes, Ladius felt it might have been far kinder to simply put Rynia out of her misery. At the end of the day, Rynia made Ladius swear off of having any more children; even with perfect genetics, she'd had a fifty percent failure rate. At least there was Shiraz to be proud of.

These days, Ladius still maintains the same home territory, but her hostility levels have been seriously amped up since Rynia left home in the company of a stallion. Unfortunately, both Rynia and the stallion had wings, so Ladius had lost them in spite of her best efforts to the contrary. Much as the idea of hunting Rynia down and ending things appeals to Ladius, at this point she is content merely regarding her younger daughter as dead. She and Artemis Entreri are still casual friends and she sees Shiraz from time to time, but for the most part, Ladius is alone.

Just as she likes it.

Guilian's Story

All things must begin somewhere, and the nature of an adult can virtually always be traced back to one's upbringing and youth. Youthful role models and youthful experiences can determine whether one grows up suspicious, hurtful, pleasant, merry, timid, or, as the case may be, all of the above. Such, unsurprisingly, can be said of Guilian, just as it can be said of many of us.

Guilian has never known his parents, nor any other blooded relations of his own. As a child, it never occurred to him to wonder, and as an adult he has seen no reason to mourn for what he never knew he was missing. Whether he was kidnapped, orphaned, abandoned in his basket he cannot say and was never told; the fact remains, though, that he was only a basket when he was taken in by the mare who would be most significant in shaping his personality.

His 'guardian' was a mare called Aurientia, a mare who could be described as 'beautiful' if one felt like being modest. Indeed, to this day Guilian cannot think of any more who more truly embodies the ideal of beauty and grace, though in his time he has seen and experienced many mares of many different appearances. Aurientia was one of the select few who nature has blessed with beauty and a natural earthy appeal, the sort of mare who could turn any stallion to mush with the turn of her head or the flick of her tail. Such was the mare who factors into his earliest memories, who made sure he was fed and had a place to sleep and wasn't eaten by wild beasts in the night. And such, as well, was the mare that introduced him to the pleasures of the flesh.

As might be expected of such a mare, Aurentia was never lacking for male companionship. Guilian grew up with many stallions around, some for short times, some for long times, sometimes with many hanging out in the clearing they lived in at the same time. The fawning behavior, the flirtatious smiles and the double entendre, it was all par for the course for Guilian and before he had passed foalhood he had come to accept that the way of the lover was 'normal'. Indeed, he got along famously with his 'guardian's lovers, chattering away with them and learning many things about flirting, picking up girls, identifying interest, and many other 'questionable' behaviors. All was soaked up by his mind as though it were a sponge, aided and abetted by his natural personability and positive nature.

Growing up in such an atmosphere, it was almost inevitable that Guilian would come to embrace such a life himself, and at a relatively young age. Ever since he was a foal Guilian had been blessed with extremely good looks; his glossy wings and curling mane had him pegged by some of the older stallions (with a chuckles and a nudge) as one to watch when he got older. In time, he grew into a young stallion of height and muscle, one who could pose, preen, and strut with the best of them. Soon thereafter, he was initiated into the world of adulthood by none other than Aurentia herself, who had come to look on her young protege as something entirely new and delectable.

It was a world of pleasure that Guilian had never even dreamed of, and he became the willing paramour of Aurentia, as well as her pupil in the amorous arts. She was still entertaining other stallions, but that only served to aid Guilian's quest for information; after all, the other stallions knew things that he didn't, and in the end, the important thing was that she was happy.

This peculiar 'free love' arrangement had lasting impact on Guilian; there was never any jealousy, any selfishness, any claims or promises. Aurentia was brutally honest to all the stallions she saw, letting them know in no uncertain terms that she would never be tied down, that she wanted nothing more than a good time and they should just enjoy each other while they were there, then move on and have fun elsewhere. It was a free-and-easy open door policy that might have raised a few eyebrows in the more morally bound Soquilis of the area, but suited them all just fine.

The only exception to all of this changing of partners was Guilian himself. Him, Aurentia was more than content to keep for herself, keeping him close at hand with coy smiles, whispered promises, and allusions to dreams that had never truly faded. Guilian, a young stallion head over heels in his first physical relationship, was utterly captivated and willing to stay forever, her loyal boy toy on the side.

At least, that was the idea for a while. As time passed, though, he slowly but surely started to buck her control, the realization that he alone was bound to the monogamous life started to make him question things. He loved his time with Aurentia, to be sure, but in spite of her experience and knowledge, things were starting to get...well, boring.

He reflected on the variety she herself got to experience, the stallions of all looks and types and behaviors. Sometimes she went out and found them, returning alone but with a smug, slightly secretive smile on her face that told him she hadn't spent her day alone. Other times, they would come to the clearing, winking at their competitors and chatting up the lady herself. Different heights, different breeds...it was all variety. So why, he reasoned, shouldn't he enjoy such variety himself?

By this time, he was a stallion full grown, well-versed in mares and the ways of wooing them. His time with Aurentia had been productive, but of he was truly going to get the most out of his life, he had to get out there and experience the world and its variety for himself. So one morning, he gave Aurentia a n**, then announced that he was going on a journey. She wasn't pleased, but after trying her favorite tricks and failing to change his mind, she blew him a kiss and watched him leave, little suspecting that the journey was to be a permanent one...and even less suspecting that he'd left her with at least one small memento: the child they'd conceived together. It would be years before that child would seek Guilian out and he learned the truth.

~~~~
In the course of his travels, Guilian came to learn a great deal about Soquili in general. His charm and silver tongue in combination with his dashing appearance meant that he never lacked for companionship, and it became a game to him to try and persuade the more reticent mares he encountered to join him in illicit bliss. There were some that he failed with, but the majority eventually gave in, ultimately agreeing with Guilian that yes, sex was good. In some cases, he himself was pursued, which served to bolster his ego and convince him that yes, this was the way to live life.
There were a few snags, however.
Borrowing a page from Aurentia's book, he always told his lovers that he wasn't interested in monogamy. Indeed, beyond being disinterested, he was downright disbelieving that such a state could exist, not without great misery to both parties. Witnessing dishonest 'lifemates' in action, he found himself unable to accept that there could be anything but pain caused by committing to solely one other; the flesh was weak, after all, and temptation everywhere. He himself was of changeable moods, desiring the shy, pale mare one day and the seductive unicorn the next; how could he commit to one, when he knew that he would be seeking out someone else the next day? It simply wasn't fair to himself or to the mare.
However, at the same time he felt a great deal of compassion for those who chose the monogamous state and resolved to do everything within his power to help them; consequently, he neither pursued nor accepted the attentions of any mare that was claimed, whether lifemated or in a committed relationship. Just because he saw the folly in such things didn't mean that everyone else did, and he wasn't so cruel that he would willingly cause another pain.
Time progressed and he continued to flit about from one region to the next, from one mare to another. It was a carefree, lazy life, and one that he embraced to the fullest of his abilities. Or he did, until he came into the Kawani lands and chose to cavort with the kalona mare Izusa. Suddenly, life wasn't so simple anymore....but he couldn't regret the change for an instant, because suddenly, for the first time in his life, he was more than just himself.
He was a father.
It was an amazing experience, one that Guilian never would have felt himself called to. After all, he had been cavorting with mares for years with no children to show for it; he had long since accepted the fact that he was not father material, and doubted he was even capable of fathering children. The three children he had with Izusa were proof to the contrary, however, and he found himself embracing his new role with vigor. The love he felt for his children was beyond any emotion he'd ever felt before...and that, in turn, made things complicated.
He swore to do his best by his children, but the continued closeness with Izusa made things...awkward. What had been a pleasant encounter turned into something much more permanent; the birth of the children made Izusa possessive, demanding, and a wee bit scary. Though he tried to be supportive of her and the kids, he couldn't be there for her the way she wanted: monogamously. Their ultimate parting did not go well, and ended with a threat on Guilian's life.
Still, he remained hopeful and optimistic. His children might now be his world, but he was too fixed in his ways to change his behavior now. He continued to love his mares, and was blessed with seven more children over the next few years. He even found the closest thing possible to the love of his life; a smooth, sweet-talking mare named Luca who felt exactly as Guilian did about monogamy. Though neither was exclusive, they care deeply for one another and spend more time together than with any other paramour.
He had welcomed eight new children into the world when a face from his past caught up with him: his own. Looking at the stallion was like looking into a mirror: his oldest son, Guiliaume, the one he had never realized Aurentia was carrying when he left. Guilian was equal parts ecstatic and horrified; thrilled to have another son, overjoyed that Guiliaume had cared to seek him out, horrified that he'd basically abandoned his first child. Though Guiliaume looks eerily similar to Guilian, he is much more reserved and genteel in his behavior, and the two are still working on establishing the terms of their relationship.
Lately, things have been a little rough for Guilian. He has always lived fast and loose, but his family has been the most important thing in his life for years. He tries to keep in touch with all of his children and grandchildren, and dedicates himself to being the best dad possible, particularly when his kids are young. Understandably, some of his children are closer to Guilian than others, and one of the closest had always been his second daughter Amary, practically a female clone of her father. Their closeness was such that it nearly destroyed Guilian when he learned Amary had given birth to triplet boys that she subsequently abandoned. One of the boys had found Guilian's son Antony's family, but the other two had vanished and the family had no idea where they were. Guilian, who placed such value on family, was devastated that one of his closest family members could so carelessly disregard family bonds, and leave young, helpless children to who knows what fate.
Guilian has been struggling to overcome his depression about Amary's behavior; helped by his family and his best friend Ariston, the shadows are finally starting to lift again. But Guilian's worry about the effects of his own behavior on his children has left a mark that will not be vanishing too soon...
