Sky blue hooves pounded into the sand as a young mare raced between the watery waves and the grassy ones. There was too much energy coursing through her small frame. Since she had taken care of that spotted stallion she had nothing to do anymore. Somewhere in the back of her mind she figured it would have been smart to at least take up another interest. Sparring seemed like a decent option but it didn't seem like anyone would fight her except for the occasional bush.

She turned her head toward the ocean and turned to run into it. Perhaps swimming against the waves would help calm her. She took only a few steps into the surf before deciding it was too cold for such activities. Glaring at the water she strengthened her stance before pounding into the earth. "Warm up so I can fight you you coward!!!!" She ordered bringing her lips up to give her a wild look.

Following her fight with Windflame, Ladius had been in pretty bashed-up shape; then again, the fact that she survived a kalona at all was quite remarkable, but it didn't change the fact she's been less than herself. Luckily she'd run in Entreri soon after, and the alicorn's healing (minor as it was) allowed her to find her unicorn friend Elizabeth without collapsing from blood loss. To look at the dark mare now, though, one would be hard-pressed to know that she's been in a fight at all, much less injured.

But that had been days ago, and healed of both body and spirit she had resumed her prowlings. One bad run-in wasn't going to stop her, after all...which is what had brought her to the ocean. She'd been walking along the shore, staring thoughtfully out at the water, when the yell of a mare caught her attention. Was the other mare yelling at HER??

No. It only took a moment for her eyes to settle on the culprit, and the younger mare was facing out towards the sea. How...unique.

Without slowing her walk, she turned her head and casually inquired of the other mare, "Do you often challenge inanimates?"

"Only when there's nothing stronger around..."She growled not even realizing she was taking to another horse. She whirled around, slightly shocked when she finally realized she wasn't alone. She had been expecting another quiet day though this worked every bit as well. She studied the other carefully. Another mare, mostly brown with bits of grey and white she didn't look much stronger then average.

"Another mare..." She sighed kicking at the sand. "The ocean's almost better..." From what she had found mares were week. The wouldn't fight but on the other hand stallions wouldn't fight her either. She was just about sick of all the passive aggressive horses around. She needed someone who would actually fight her. Maybe one of those Kalona horses would be a better match?

It had taken Ladius very little time to size up the other mare, particularly as she approached and got close enough to not details. The other mare was slightly smaller than she herself, and appeared to be younger as well. She was standing a bit heavier on her feet than Ladius was, but gave at least some impression she knew how to handle herself in a fight...but if she herself was any judge, the other mare was a bit...wet behind the ears. Not much muscle, but then, perhaps she his it well. Never underestimate, after all.

She was more amused than insulted at the other mare's words, though. Obviously she hadn't learned not to underestimate her opponents, something Ladius was used to from stallions, not mares. Well, she felt nothing if not charitable, given her recent success...so she'd show this mare the error of her ways.

Without batting an eyelash, she suddenly dove at the mare. If this worked...then the blue mare would go flying into the ocean over Ladius' shoulder.

Amoena blinked and before she knew it the other female was right in front of her. In that second all that she could think was 'drop'. She allowed her legs to collapse right out from underneath her sending her straight to the ground. In a normal fight she never would have considered anything of the sort but it had become apparent that this was no normal fight.

From the ground she didn't have many ways to attack so she resorted to just crawling to get away. She had spent so much time training and now what? She was crawling away like she was a filly again. It made her mad and made her feel stupid and useless. A feeling she didn't like one bit but she could get on the offensive til she had time to stand. Time just didn't seem like something she had a lot of right now.

It couldn't be helped. As soon as she realized what the other mare was doing, Ladius burst into uproarious laughter, rising to her feet and chuckling at the other mare. While she had no issues with doing whatever it took to keep her skin intact, to be using such a move after she herself had barely done anything was amusing, to put it mildly. Granted, the bue mare wasn't in the ocean, so it wan't as bad as it could have been; the other mare knew how to fight. Sorta.

Dusting herself off with a tail, Ladius finally stopped laughing but continued to smile, then addressed the crawling mare with about as much normalcy as could be managed under ANY circumstances. Though for Ladius, this kinda situation WAS sorta normal.

"Well, you aren't a complete disappointment, Girly. But I hope that you remember in the future to save the disparagements for AFTER you've fought. Underestimating your opponant because of looks is foolish, and gender moreso. Or do you doubt the fact that I could wipe the floor with you right now, if I was so inclined?"

There was no hostility, no teasing in Ladius' voice; it was mere statement of fact. Statement of fact the she hoped the other mare would appreciate, since if she was ANY sort of fighter herself she was bound to realize that she was in the presence of a tougher fighter.

Amoena said nothing, she simply picked her self up off the ground and faced the other. She just stood listening to her criticism knowing that anything she said now would just be foolish. The dark horse seemed to have an attitude but she also knew how to fight. "Teach me." She said suddenly taking a step forward.

Where her request had come from she didn't know, nor did she care. She couldn't take her on which meant she was stronger. That kind of strength was what the young mare desired. That would also give her something to do when she wasn't looking after her mother. "Not for free...I can bring you drinks or food if you want. I want you to help me be stronger."

That was a bit blunt. Ladius' brow quirked up in amusement, and her usual sly smile crossed her lips as she replied. "'Teach you', eh? You don't want to ask about qualifications, or experience, or any of the usual prudencies, eh? Just ask and assume that I'm willing to show you everything there is to know without so much as an exchange of names?"

She moved forward as well, suddenly, swiftly; and when she was nose to nose with Amoena, she gave her a single measuring look. The blue mare had already proved she wasn't hopeless, but this was another test; how would she respond. "You offer food, but surely you realize that I'm used to taking care of myself. So why would I want the burden of a disciple?"
PostPosted: Wed Jan 17, 2007 1:26 pm

"I won't be a burden..."She said without even blinking at the movement. She had wanted to but she felt as though she was frozen in place. She hadn't been expecting a simple yes but she also hadn't expected this kind of challenge. "If it's a name you want it's 'Amoena' if you want something else then tell me now and I'll prove myself!" She met her eyes dead on at this without a second thought or regret.

This was what she wanted. Strength. Her desires and dreams could be summed up into the one word. She wanted to always stand alone on her own legs. If that meant seeking help for training then so be it. "I will do whatever it takes to be stronger! Even if it means getting beaten til I can't breath!"

Chocolate brown eyes gazed intently at eyes of blue, neither blinking for what seemed like an eternity. Ladius' gaze was sharp, and there was no warmth at all in her eyes as she stared thoughtfully, measuringly, at the other mare. At Amoena's words, the older mare smiled slightly, but it was more of a sardonic smirk than a true smile, the sort of smile that tended to make the receipient more concerned than relieved.

But then suddenly, she was stepping back away from the other mare only to start to chuckle. "Is that a fact, young one? Well, as long as you understand the risk involved, then fine. I shall take you on as my disciple, and woe to you if I ever hear you start to b***h at my methods. Consider this your upfront notification, Amoena."

This she said as she whirled around to face Amoena once again, the laughter abruptly vanishing from her face, replaced once again by cold steel. "I've been a fighter for my entire life. I've defeated mares and stallions alike, and even successfully fought with kalona before. So if I hear you say, even once, that you can't handle this...you're gone. Is that totally clear to you?"

Amoena's eyes sparkled slightly at the news that she would be able to learn. They brightened more at the list of foes she had defeated. Sure she had wanted to fight a Kalona but to actually beat one took skill. Once she realized she was gawking she shook her head and returned to her formal disposition. "So...you're training's gonna be that hard huh?" She asked giving her self a moment to think.

Did she really want to do this? She wanted to learn but if it would be hard would she still be willing? A few seconds later she kicked herself for even considering backing out. That would be a sign of weakness and Amoena was not weak! "Shouldn't be any problem, just tell me what you want me to do!"

Ladius' smirk intensified for a mere second. So, the little one was sincere, was she? Well, mayhap this disciple thing wouldn't be so hard after all. There needed to be more mares out there that knew how to kick a**, after all!

But first, to set things in order. "Relative 'hardness' of training is all relative, kid; I personally don't think that I push things too hard, but perhaps it'll be different for you than it is for me, used to such pursuits as I myself am. But you'll get used to it." Either that or she'd be gone, but Ladius wasn't going to start making assumptions now. "And as for what I want you to do...let's start with a name. Unless you want me to call you Kid all the time."
PostPosted: Sun Jan 28, 2007 3:52 pm

"Amoena..."She grumbled not entirely too fond of her name. It meant 'lovely' but she truly wished that she had another. 'Lovely' just didn't suit her, something along the lines of fiery seemed to fit her better. Either way she had been given an order, of a sort, and she wasn't gonna start disobeying anytime soon. Order or not the giving of a name still seemed rather pointless.

"So...what are you going to have me do now? Brake trees? Race? Jump rivers? What?" She asked coming off a bit more impatient then she had meant. She just really wanted to get on with her training. She wanted to be stronger she wanted to be able to brag that she had bested a Kalona as this other could. Actually she wanted to beat a Skinwalker! That would really give her something to brag about.

Ladius had never learned languages, so whether or not the blue mare's name had any meaning or not, the point was moot. All that she really needed was a handle to refer to her by, after all, and now that she had it, there was no reason to dwell. And now that was dealt with, it was her turn to return the favor.

"Alrighty, Amoena; my name's Ladius. And just so we're clear, make even one crack about my name and you're gone; it wasn't my choice to get this name, but I've got it and I don't need to hear any cracks on it."

That disclaimer was really more relevant when dealing with males, but it never hurt to plan ahead, especially not when dealing with one as impulsive as Amoena seemed. Assuming that her impulsiveness was an indication, of course.

It was that impulsiveness that caused her to raise a brow at Amoena. "Do now? You are certainly zealous, I"ll give you that. But since I'm not in the habit of taking disciples, I don't have some rigorous training program to chuck at you, and even if I did it woulnd't be here. The ocean isn't my territory, after all, so you can rein it in for now."

Glancing at the younger mare thoughtfully, Ladius realized that she actually HAD no experience with training. Luckily for them both it was a long way back to her meadow; time to think. But in the meantime...

"Come on. It's a long way back, so we might as well start walking now. There'll be time enough for sparring later. In the meantime, you can tell me why you want this training, and we'll see what I can come up with."
