He hadn't told his parents and it should have come at no surprise that he hadn't told the rest of the herd either. For once in his life, Ambroise had been exceptionally tight lipped regarding his plans and it was only now as he returned home that he would have to face the music. He had proposed of course and as surprising as it might have seemed to many, the mare in question had accepted his proposition and become his mate. It was a startling revelation, or at least it would be for all those involved when he had been given the pleasure of telling them the news. However, a small part of him was unusually nervous about the prospect of facing his parents when he had such news to offload on them. Oh he was fairly certain his mother would be delighted at the prospect of a daughter-in-law but what about his father?

Grencia had never spoken out against his mate, he'd never chastised her for trying to push him into a union... but at the same time, Grencia had never supported her either. Yei was exhuberant enough for the pair of them and where she pushed, nudged and hinted it seemed that his father was happy and content so long as his children were (bachelor or not). A small part of Ambroise couldn't help but wonder if perhaps Grencia would question his motives for such a union and whether or not he would agree to the reply that Ambroise provided. He hadn't done it primarily because he had been pushed (although the nudge had certainly helped), on the contrary he had made the decision based on the sudden realisation that he did in fact need the company.

...He couldn't claim that it was a love match and frankly he doubted he ever could. Ambroise had never quite grasped the concept of the emotion but he appreciated Elizabeth's intelligence and knew that she would make him happy. She would offer him the company he needed, the intellectual conversation and so forth while he would provide her with much the same. Her desire for children had not been lost on him and nor had his own sense of duty - he had agreed to this as well. Alas she would probably have to be the loving parent of the partnership but he would provide ample support and the discipline as and where necessary.

That was how these things worked, right?

Wrong.

Perhaps in time Ambroise would begin to understand how such relationships were meant to be but for the time being he had his own eyes. His stomach a flutter with apprehension, he drew closer to his home and where he assumed his parents would have returned to. He hadn't really mulled over the best way to bring the subject up with them either but he was sure that with Elizabeth in his company, his mother was bound to do that much for him anyway. After all, it was rare for her son to be in the company of a mare and even more rare for it to be a repeat performance! Sucking in a deep breath, he then released it in a long and drawn out sigh. There was no mistaking the firey pelt of either parent and he knew that whether he like it or not, it was going to be now or never!

Hearing Ambroise's deep breath, Elizabeth flicked her gaze over to her lifemate's face, curious as to the cause. It had been a very noticeable noise, given the fact that the two had been traveling in complete silence, so it was only natural that it would attract her attention.

That was not to imply that she regretted the silence. Unlike the majority of mares out there, Elizabeth needed no constant chatter to reassure her of company, constancy, or affection. The very nature of their union was such that if she were being honest, silence was preferable to any possible type of conversation right now. One could argue that the silence allowed the two to acclimate to each other's presence without having to be overly anxious about what they were saying; for Elizabeth, the silence allowed her time to think.

And she had a great deal to think about these days.

Ambroise had been a perfect gentleman during the days it took them to ascend the slopes, always inquiring into her state of hunger/thirst/weariness and seeming determined to see her as comfortable as possible at all times. He had been courteous, informative about their surroundings, and generally pleasant, if a bit on the serious, solemn, and silent side. However, that did nothing to change the fact that he was now her lifemate after what could only with the utmost of charity be regarded as a whirlwind courtship (as that would imply there was a courtship at all!). She was as irrevocably bound to him, by her own words and actions, as if she were chained to him.

Needless to say, the concept was intimidating at first glance. The staid, practical part of her continued to be amazed at her indulging in such reckless and possibly dangerous behavior, agreeing to commit to a stallion she had spent so little time with.

Yet at the same time, she was contented. Minimal as their time together had been, it had been early on in her acquaintance with Ambroise that she had become comfortable with him; his care for his brother, closeness to his family, fondness for his mother, and unmistakable devotion to his homeland were all touching proofs of his dependability and steadfastness; any stallion that considerate of his mother had to be a good sort. It was true that he wasn't affectionate, conversational, or overly warm, but in his own way he was proving to be companionable. She certainly found the silence comfortable, far more comfortable than any forced merriment would be. Regardless of whether he was silent out of contempt, bashfulness, laryngitis, introspection, or lack of something to say, the end result was that she had time to gather her thoughts without the added complication of keeping up a conversation.

That wasn't to imply that she didn't WANT to have conversations with her mate; quite the contrary, actually. But now, at this time, just getting used to his physical presence was enough. Though she continued to keep a respectful distance from her mate at all times, he was still THERE, very close, very big, and very real.

And at the moment, apparently very much in need of mental preparation. Having glanced his way for a moment, Liz glanced back ahead to see what might have prompted his sharp intake of breath. It only took an instant for the red coat of his mother to register, along with another bright (but masculine) shape. Suddenly his breath made sense; she could probably do with a moment herself.

But that wasn't the way she did things. No, she would smile, be polite, be warm, let Ambroise do the talking; she would be the perfect lady as she met her in-laws.

Oh dear, there were those butterflies again...

To imply there had even been a courtship would have been laughable! Even Ambroise would have cracked a smile if an individual had alluded to it. It would have been safe to assume that the stallion was well aware of how abrupt his proposal had been and more importantly, how uncommon it was. Even his parents would be staggered by his decision, particularly when his mother seemed to have finally accepted that one of her sons would be a permanent bachelor. It was ironic really, his mother had worked very hard to persuade him of otherwise and when she woefully accepted it he found that she was actually right. He had needed companionship and much to his surprise, despite his gruff persona he really was inclined towards some form of social interaction. He dwelled on this for a few moments, mentally preparing himself for the questions and queries that followed until he was hit by what could only be described as a revelation.

"She planned this," he announced incredulously. He drew to a halt, his jaw dropping just a touch as he mulled over this fact. He hadn't intended to address it to anyone in particular but he would have been perfectly audible, his dislief would be even more evident. He'd always known his mother was clever and just a touch manipulative (in a good way) but he really did have to give her credit where it was due. He was a stallion well into his adulthood and she had trumped him, pparently reverse psychology still worked so long as the parent involved knew exactly how to use it. All things considered, he had to concede that his mother was really quite admirable.

This discovery had a number of unexpected results and as he quickly recovered from the shock his shoulders relaxed and his features eased. No longer quite as stiff and stern, he looked decidedly more approachable - his features even took on a more youthful look. Evidently stress aged him significantly and when such things evaporated, he had a much more roguish quality. It was in times like these that one could appreciate his heritage, he had definitely taken after his father and when he wasn't glaring he could be rather handsome! Ah, perhaps if Yei had managed to orchestrate it so that a mare caught him laughing then she would have wrangled him into a relationship long ago. Nevertheless he wasn't quite as unsettled any more and seemed much more confident as he picked up his pace again and moved towards his mother and father.

"Remind me to make a mental note of all my mother's parenting tactics?" he requested mildly as he glanced over his shoulder to check on his new mate. She seemed to be comfortable, there was no indication of strain or weariness and while he didn't think she had quite adapted to mountain life yet, she wasn't wheezing like an old codger who really couldn't cope. He was firm in the belief that she would inform him if she was uncomfortable anyway, it was a point that he had expressed more than once and she had made use of it a few times. He hadn't been in any type of rush to get home, too apprehensive about how the news would be received up until this point, so he really hadn't taken poorly to any requests to slow down!

"She's really quite a genius," he mused.

"Who is?" A very familiar voice interjected. Having bridged the gap between herself and her son, Yei had bitten the bullet and pottered over to have a nosey herself. She was looking towards Elizabeth every so often with mild curiosity but her attention for the most part was fixed on her son.

"You are." He responded good naturally - it was said that a male who could treat his mother with such care and attention would be an attentive mate but alas, it was difficult not to dote on a mother like Yei.

"Oh well I already knew that," she pointed out smugly, an amused smile on her lips before she shifted her attention to Elizabeth. Her smile brightened considerably as the hostess came out and she canted her head to one side. "Hello Elizabeth, how are you - taken a shine to the slopes have you?" She giggled and readjusted her footing so that she was more comfortable, scarcely taking note of Grencia as he drew up alongside her and peered between his son and Elizabeth. "I must say it's a pleasure to see you again so soon, at least the weather is easing up so it's much more pleasant!"

Coming on the heels of such a long silence, Ambroise's comment was a bit of a surprise than it should have been; that, well, the silence paired with her sudden case of nerves at the sight of her new in-laws. Yei had seemed like such a pleasant mare before, but what would she think of Elizabeth as a daughter-in-law? Especially after such a short relationship? And Ambroise's father...though Ambroise hadn't really said anything about him, in her mind Grencia had taken on a rather stern, no-nonsense persona that was like Ambroise and then some. Meeting Grencia would be a nerve-wracking experience, and she only hoped she acquitted herself well.

These being her thoughts, Ambroise's sudden, incredulous comment about planning caught her off-guard, drawing her attention back to Ambroise from his parents. Who had planned this, and what was "this", for that matter? His look of abject shock did nothing to clear up any confusion, and the transition of shock into utter relaxation actually worsened it. She felt as though she had missed something important, which was an unsettling feeling...

Still, it was a pleasant surprise to see how comfortable he suddenly seemed on the heels of whatever realization he had come to. His body became less stiff, his face less drawn...he looked even more pleasant than when she'd first met him, and at the time she had thought him a very pleasant-looking stallion!

And it was another pleasant thing to see the obvious affection with which he greeted his mother, his ease and comfort in her presence a delightful thing for Elizabeth to witness. The affection between the two was so delightful for her, a mare so used to being on her own...but now she was a part of this family! She found herself hoping, with much more fervency than before, that they liked her!

At Yei's arrival, she had adopted her best smile, giving the older mare a slight bob in greeting. "I am very well, Yei, and it is a pleasure to see you again. And I suppose you might say that; your home is a very beautiful place. And the warmth of Spring is proving to be delightful!" Keeping her composure and maintaining her poise was something Elizabeth always prided herself on, and this was proving to be the hardest test of that yet. She felt that she came off well, but beneath the relaxed exterior she was atwitter with nerves, especially when Ambroise's father (he HAD to be Ambroise's father, there was no way that stallion was a brother) came up and started looking at her. He wasn't staring, wasn't crowding, didn't seem upset, accusatory, or otherwise unpleasant...but it was still nerve-wracking.

She had already resolved on letting Ambroise handle all verbal communications, had expected and trusted her would handle things in the best and most efficient fashion...but darned if it didn't feel like she was keeping some dirty secret from these two Soquili!

"Mmmm, just wait until high summer, the views are positively staggering," Yei cooed warmly. Completely at ease, tucked neatly into her mate's wing, she kept her gaze fixed on Liz for a little while longer than was necessary before her mate gave her a rather gentle knock. His hoof connected with the back of her leg in what could only be described as a poke, an eyebrow lifted and some form of silent communication passed between the pair. There was a silence and then Yei let out a quite 'ooooh' of realisation and stepped away from the warmth of Grencia's wing. Bustling round to Elizabeth's side, she stood at ease to her left and canted her head in the mare's direction. "Darling this is Elizabeth - you remember the one I told you about before?" She flashed another of her smiles and waited for Grencia to pick up on her meaning.

Unsurprisingly his reaction wasn't immediate, the emerald orbs continued to regard Elizabeth with mild curiosity before he swivelled his gaze from his son to his mate. It was clear that Ambroise had been taught to master his expression from his father, Grencia gave nothing away as he pondered his mate's words. Nevertheless, his expression may have been unreadable but his tone of voice gave the game away the moment he opened his mouth - he was softly spoken of course, but there was a hint of mischief and understanding in his tone when he did speak. Needless to say the mate of the exhuberant Yei Umeko was accustomed to her antics - even the meddling.

"You mean the young mare who encountered your wayward son?" He cooed, his gaze returning to Elizabeth briefly.

"That would be the one,"

"And the visitor?"

"That one too," Yei gave a quick nod, her eyes twinkling as she watched her mate give a rather exagerated waggle of his brows towards her. Suffice to say, with such large, feathery eyebrows it was difficult for it not to look comical.

"So she would be the reason for all the distractions then -"

"Definitely."

"She should be ashamed of herself," he murmured gravely and returned his gaze to Elizabeth. His expression was grim but it didn't quite meet his eyes as he regarded the younger mare. She was definitely not a filly by any means (he could see that much) but she was youthful and he could appreciate his son's ability to tolerate her; Grencia would have bet good money on the fact that she provided him with ample conversation. Now it was rather fascinating to see Ambroise in the company of anyone but when it came to Yei's machinations it wasn't something he was terribly surprised about. "Are you ashamed of yourself?" He enquired after a few moments. "You caused quite a lot of disruption to our routine, I'll have you know..." Beside Elizabeth, Yei made certain to hide her smile while Ambroise appeared to develop an expression along the lines of exasperation.

"He's disappointed, it meant we had to delay our vacation," Yei murmured grimly. "Ambroise's father is horrendously strict, you can see why my son resembles a plank of wood personality wise."

"Mother..."

"Don't worry I still love you!" Yei twinkled back at her son who lifted a brow and then promptly narrowed his eyes. "But we are terribly delighted to see you again, it's lovely to have visitors. How long do you intend to stay with us?" Yei's head tilted to the other side, her attention primarily on Elizabeth (though she did keep just a touch of her peripheral on her son). "I really do hope it's for Spring at least, the transition from each season is lovely up -"

"Here," Grencia finished for her. "Do not change the subject, darling - the mare must really answer for her crimes before I'm willing to have her distract my guards again!"

"Oh my..." Yei murmured, her voice quavering slightly as she resisted the urge to laugh. It would have been a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, but Grencia shot his mate a particularly stern look before skillfully schooling his features into that vague expression again.

'Horrified' would be the expression that best described Elizabeth's feelings upon hearing Grencia's words. Mild though his tone was, the meaning, look, and words themselves were undeniably censuring. Luckily for Elizabeth that she was so pale; as it was, nearly all of the color drained from her face before Grencia had finished speaking.

Why hadn't she thought before about what a disruption her visit had been before? After all, Ambroise was a busy individual, and he had spent so much time humoring her during her unannounced visitation...perhaps he had neglected something without realizing it? Or perhaps he had needed to clear such things first, like sending Venom off on his way? Ambroise was an adult, yes, but in herdlands, wasn't the alpha supposed to oversee everything? Surely Grencia was the alpha, had Ambroise made a mistake? Had she made Ambroise make a mistake? Or worse, had she gotten Ambroise in trouble because of her whims?

Had she been less used to schooling her expressions and behavior, Elizabeth would have been round-eyed, her jaw open in horror and stammering her apologies. As it was, she was rather pale, but managed to keep her tone level and her expression suitably neutral. Fenghang and Yei she had met and come to terms with their exuberance and sense of mischief (sort of...); this was a totally new type of teasing, one that she was far from familiar with. Even Yei's good humor did nothing to alleviate the concern and extreme discomfort she was feeling at the moment, and it took longer than she would have liked to compose herself enough to respond.

"I do apologize if I disrupted your routine or caused any complications in your herdlands, but I assure you it was not my intent. My visit was unplanned, yes, but it was my desire to be as unobtrusive as possible..."

She didn't know what else to say to him, and an anxious sideways glance at Ambroise betrayed her nervousness. So much for making a good impression!

"I TOTALLY see it now," Grencia declared as he watched the horror cloud Elizabeth's expression. Her composure completely lost, he had watched with interest as she'd scrambled to recover it and had shot Ambroise some sort of glance. The instant in which all of these things had come to fruition, Grencia's expression had cleared and an impish smile to rival Yei's crept onto his lips. He looked positively devillish, had he been younger and unattached he may even have been rather dangerous in a rakish and positive way - as oxymoronic as such a thing might have seemed.

"I know right!" Yei chimed in merrily as she fixed her own pale gaze on Grencia and grinned. "I so called it, the second I saw her I was like 'mmhmm...' and wasn't I right?" She shimmied back over to her mate and nudged his neck before leaning up to murmur something in his ear. He leant down to accomodate the difference in height by just a touch and nodded slowly. Now and again the pair would glance at Elizabeth, then flick their gaze to Ambroise - it was after a considerable amount of whispering that Grencia returned her remarks in hushed tones.

A pause...

"Ahhhh!" Both individuals remarked in unison, their eyes twinkled and after a few moments Grencia gave a dismissive wave of his wing and draped it back over his companion's back.

"Well, I'm satisfied - she's completely harmless," Grencia cooed and turned his gaze to Ambroise. "I accept your apology for neglecting your duties, don't worry I don't think any less of you," he reassured his son, in reply Ambroise could do nothing more than gawk, his lower jaw dropping in a most uncharacteristic manner.

"Oh but Elizabeth, you never did answer my question! Are you here for the spring?" Yei continued as though her mate hadn't mentally traumatised the poor mare.

"Yes," Ambroise answered for her.

"Oh she is? How delightful! Oooh I'll have to show you the sights while you're hear, a shame you can't stay for -"

"She'll be here for summer too," Ambroise continued, his jaw no longer slack as he too possessed the ability to recover his composure reasonably quickly.

"Extended visit!" Yei squealed happily and canted her head to the side. "Oooh how wonderful, it'd be lovely to have a guest and you can appreciate the -"

"I really don't think she's a guest either."

"Herd mate?" Yei's eyes had grown round at Ambroise's persistance, something that was definitely not one of his most common traits.

"A little more..."

Mother and father exchanged glances rather abruptly before regarding the mare in astonishment. "No way," Yei remarked on their behalf, her tone incredulous. "Are you really?" this time she address Elizabeth, her son momentarily dismissed, it wasn't that she didn't love him but really this was a bit of a turn up for the books.

When she had daydreamed about the idea of being a part of a close family, there were elements that Elizabeth had not considered. Inside jokes, baiting, delivering zingers with a straight face...this was all new to the mare that appreciated humor but had always taken it in a much more upfront manner. Grencia was starting to overwhelm her, and she was beginning to feel like she had walked into some sort of trial.

Well, sort of. Grencia's smile had taken her completely aback, and his and Yei's half-verbal, half-inferred conversation caused her cheeks to go from ashen to crimson in a second, their obvious amusement doing nothing to lessen her discomfort with the whole process. Oh, she was glad to realize (belatedly as it was) that she wasn't actually in, or the cause of, any trouble...but being a source of amusement when trying to make a good impression and meet some very important Soquili was unsettling.

Maybe that was the point? To see how well she responded under pressure, or how well she could improvise? Oh goodness, was she failing? Had she failed already??

Agonizing internally over how she had or hadn't performed in this hypothetical test, Elizabeth was more than willing to let Ambroise answer all of his parents' questions on her behalf. She hadn't even been introduced yet, and she already seemed to be putting her hoof in it. Or wasn't she? Was that the problem? Should she have responded in a more irreverent fashion? Was she EXPECTED to respond in a more irreverent fashion?

Well, if such WAS the case, then there were bound to be problems; irreverence was not her strong suit, or even her suit at all. She could only be what she was, which was deferential and polite.

And, when called upon, honest.

Reigning in her blush and casting her eyes demurely downward, she answered Yei's question with the most confidence that she could muster. "If you are asking if there is a commitment, then I would have to say yes." Anything more definite than that she would leave to Ambroise; the last thing she wanted to do was overstep herself with his parents!

It was a rite of passage for all of the offspring of Yei Umeko and Grencia to be subjected to such behaviour. The antics of both parents was instigated by Yei Umeko more often than not but it didn't take a genius to realise that Grencia could compliment her perfectly. He may have been the calming influence on his mate more often than not, but there were occasions when he let her go completely mental. It was at times like this, when a child presented a new beau to the family that it was in their best interests to experience the whirlwind now rather than later. In Yei's opinion, if a beau could handle the attentions and teasing of the family now then they could fully appreciate it at a later date. Oh, the Alpha would never ask them to conform or adopt the behaviour of herself and her children but they did have to be fully prepared to endure it. After all, Islagiatt was highly family orientated and if one completely abhorred their antics then why bother with being a part of it.

...Truth be told, Yei couldn't cope with the knowledge that her babies were torn from their family because a mate couldn't handle the chaos. Nor could she accept demands for her family to behave differently than how they normally did, just so another could settle. Alas, she would sooner her children remained spinsters and bachelors if they weren't permitted to be free.

However as Elizabeth confirmed the parents' suspicions they exchanged knowing glances for quite some time. Grencia unmistakably lifted a brow, then promptly waggled both as though in silent communication. Unfortunately the gesture served nothing more than to make his mate snort with laughter. If it hadn't be obvious from the beginning then it should have been by now, the comical expressions a clear indication that she hadn't failed at anything. On the contrary they seemed to be rather satisfied with how she had handled herself, she hadn't cried off, wailed or been rude. No, the mare had performed admirably and had born the butt end of the jokes with good grace. Alas, neither parent was completely aware of the internal agony and there would have been a rather good chance that both would have roared with laughter if Grencia was deemed to be the more overwhelming of the partnership.

"So that'll mean grandbabies then!" Yei was never one for tact in these situations - of she was very good when it was absolutely necessary but when it came to her children it wasn't generally required. News like this meant her childrens' happiness and more importantly, grandchildren. For a mare who utterly adored children the prospect of more far outweighed the rather bizarre arrangement that her son might have had with the mare. One might have said that Yei Umeko hadn't really listened to her son's remarks but the importance hadn't been lost on Grencia whose expression promptly clouded as he regarded both mare and stallion. Other soquili might have found it hard to ignore Yei's chittering but he had mastered the art of selective hearing a long time ago, call it self preservation but it was required occasionally.

"Just how long have you know each other in a genuine manner?" he enquired, nudging his mate lightly with his wing. She gave a small squeak but did lapse into silence, her expression one that didn't seem to approve of his objections now that her very determined bachelor had found a bride. "To my knowledge you had met no more than twice, one of these occasions mounting to a number of days but the fact still remains..." Grencia pulled a face as he struggled to come to terms with what could arguably have been the most spontaneous decision his son had taken in his entire life. In a manner of speaking, the patriarch of this herd would have been happier if his son had decided to slice all his hair off and become a punk rocker, he wasn't entirely sure that marriage could be taken so lightly.

"I understand that it is unorthodox," Ambroise began.

"A vast understatement," Grencia drawled, his gaze critical as it fixed on his eldest son.

"But I did give the decision considerable thought before I went ahead," Ambroise cut in again before his father could say anything else. His jaw tightened and he levelled his own stare on his father before shaking his head. "As unusual a concept as it might be for our family, I believe this is the right path for me -"

"And your prospective bride?"

"I would sooner you asked her that question," Ambroise returned with a cool snort, without repeating the question his father shifted his gaze towards Elizabeth and lifted his brows in inquiry.

She'd always wanted a family. She'd always appreciated the ways that families interacted, their little inside jokes, cameraderie, and generally affectionate way. She'd always admired the way that they could communicate without having to actually vocalize or be specific, and the way that they were always there for each other (well, at least in her idyllic daydreams).

All of these things Elizabeth kept reminding herself as she weathered the meet-and-greet with Grencia and Yei, doing her best to keep her composure and her color in the face of a deeply concerning and diconcerting line of questions. It was a consolation that she had taken the time on their journey to reflect on just such a probability: after all, it was a strange thing for anyone to up and commit to a Soquili they'd known for such a little bit of time, and it was the duty of one's family to ensure that everything was well to inspire such an arrangement.

It was ALSO nice to have Ambroise there, able to field some of the questions and take the heat off of her. And he certainly was taking some heat, particularly by the end of Grencia's line of questioning. Yei and Grencia might be amused at the idea of Grencia being the more intimidating/overwhelming one, but his more serious delivery and manner was making him that figure in spades! Ambroise was standing his ground, every bit as firm in his convictions as Grencia was in his concerns, but it was still a little intimidating to see the obvious concern/criticism on Grencia's face. Especially when his attention was back on her.

But the reprieve had given her a chance to collect herself, and she was able to answer in a very calm voice the question implied by his eyebrow. "While I agree that the speed of this arrangement is atypical at best, please don't have any concerns on my part. Ambroise has been a perfect gentleman for the entirety of our acquaintance, and I could never have agreed to such a commitment as marriage without being convinced that it was the right choice. I feel that Ambroise is just the sort of stallion as stands to make me the most satisfied with mated life, and I will endeavor to do all that is in my power to see him comfortable and contented as well."

It was hardly a romantic, emotional, or impassioned speech, but it was honest and sincere. Buoyed by that sincerity, it was easier for Elizabeth to meet Grencia's gaze than ever before, and her expression was calm as she she spoke.

There, that wasn't so hard now, was it?

"Satisfied but not -"

"Oh you're such a worry wart!" Yei interrupted in a sunny voice, evidently tired of the attention being on her mate for so long. It wasn't that she wanted the limelight all the time but when Grencia was being so horrendously negative she wouldn't have it. She was more than happy to barge in and inject just a touch of optimism and whimsy into the proceedings. "So it's a little unorthodox and so not like how all the others found their beaus but that doesn't make it any less special," she levelled her pale gaze on Grencia who lifted a brow. It was clear that he didn't agree with his mate on this one, then again he had to be the sensible one and the bad cop on occasions. Suffice to say, he would probably be equally as disagreeable on the day he heard about Feng's antics as well.

"However you can hardly say that our romance was normal either!" She chastised and puffed out her cheeks. Hopping from hoof to hoof, she resembled a small filly preparing for a temper tantrum. This expression remained on her face for a few moments before her features relaxed and her gaze turned puppy-like. "Just because they hardly know each other doesn't mean they can't be happy - she suits him so well!"

"As an acquaintance yes, but I cannot agree to anything so peculiar!" Grencia snapped, his wings unfurling unconsciously. It was something that happened when he was flustered and it was a motion that Ambroise mimicked as well. Grencia rarely strutted around like a peacock, but he definitely knew how to make himself look much bigger and imposing. Unfortunately this did nothing for Yei who lifted a brow and gave a dismissive snort at his behaviour.

"It's not as if you have to agree, he's old enough to make his own decisions," Yei pointed out glumly.

Grencia glared.

Ambroise sighed.

"Where'd your sense of romance go, Grencia?" Yei demanded and then narrowed her eyes. "I want a divorce, I can't stay with a male who has no appreciation for the -"

"You don't want a divorce," Grencia stated calmly, his eyes raising heavenwards as he took note of his mate's rising temper. She was never a violent sort but she did start to make utterly ridiculous claims and demands when she lost the rag.

"Yes I do!"

"No you don't..."

Ambroise promptly shot an apologetic smile towards Elizabeth, well aware that the mare had endured far more than pretty much any other individual would have ever been subjected to. Leaning his head to the right he let he released a sigh. "If you run now, I won't think any less of you..." he uttered through the side of his mouth while his father attempted to smooth his mother's ruffled feathers.

"The romance is gone, our relationship is dead!" Apparently Yei had progressed into melodrama by the time Ambroise had tuned back in to the conversation his parents were having. He did have to admire the mild and amused expression on his father's face, most other stallion's would have lost their temper by now. Alas, it was a testament to how long they had been together and how well Grencia knew his mate - first and foremost, Yei really wasn't terribly upset and she certainly wasn't considering walking out on him.

"Might I propose a truce then?" Grencia interrupted before the mare could make any other dramatic announcements, any moment now she'd be flailing.

"And what would that be?" Yei enquired huffily.

"I suggest a trial period," Grencia turned his gaze back to Ambroise and Elizabeth, the pair close enough for him to regard both at the same time. "If you are still together and still believe you are suited after two months then I will give my bless -"

"One month," Yei argued.

"Good god woman, you are being impractical!" Grencia howled in exasperation and stared at his mate who now had a particularly smug expression on her features. He knew what that look meant, he didn't particularly revel in it. "Fine, one month," he said with a weary sigh and shook his head.

"I knew you'd see it my way," Yei transformed almost instantaneously and cuddled into her mate's neck. Her sunny expression returned and she peered at both Elizabeth and her son happily. "So, one month - does that suit?"

"No arguments," Ambroise agreed curtly before leaning in to Elizabeth again. "Welcome to the family," he murmured wearily. No wonder he'd had butterflies when he got here, they were dragging him over the coals!

Emotionally draining. That was the only way to describe this interaction, unless she were to become uncharitable.

Elizabeth hadn't exactly expected a warm reception, but she hadn't expected to be greeted with such skepticism, either. Yei's friendliness at their previous meeting had perhaps lead her to suspect a warmer greeting than the circumstances merited, and dealing with reality was proving to be a challenge.

Still, she had to appreciate Grencia's honesty. Were their positions reversed, she couldn't doubt that she would be skeptical, concerned, disbelieving; everything that she had come to know of Ambroise pointed against his embarking on a major life choice lightly. If it were her son, who was to say that she wouldn't be more wary, possibly even hostile?

At the same time, though, her behavior towards her own children was all hypothetical at this point anyway; those children were nothing more than a happy daydream, and would continue to be just a daydream if she were to chicken out. No, that wasn't entirely true, either, and it was unkind to both herself and Ambroise to assume that she would simply go out and...no. She couldn't finish the thought, even in her own mind; the idea that she would behave in a loose manner was just...wrong. Wrong on many, many, levels!

No, she would manage this. Nothing that she was hearing was truly wrong or offensive, and much as she appreciated Yei's support, she would have been willing to accept Grencia's original condition. Yei was correct, Ambroise was an adult; but even adults were parts of their family and she would rather not see him ostracized on her account. She would simply take this trial period for what it was, a chance to get to know her new home, her new life...her new mate.

Yei and Grencia's fast and furious exchange over, Elizabeth was completely at peace with everything; not having to talk had done wonders when it came to having time to think!

Ambroise's weary welcome was met with a calm, pleased smile and a slight nod, her own voice low as she replied, "I'm sure that I shall be able to manage beautifully." Raising her voice and turning her attention to her in-laws, she was the picture of composure as she nodded, her tone smooth and her gaze level. "One month is entirely reasonable; I appreciate your indulgence and hospitality in the meantime."

As she spoke, Elizabeth stepped closer to Ambroise, adopting a stance that put her close at his side, yet slightly behind in a position of respect and support. As far as she was concerned, Ambroise was the final say, and it was up to him to determine where they went from here.

Ambroise as a single father would have been an even more unusual occurance than his sudden engagement. However, only a fool would have assumed that he would have left the mare to fend for herself. A stallion who took his duties and responsibilities so seriously would have thrown himself to the wolves sooner than pretend the rather unfortunate affair had ever occured. Admittedly, such an event would be incredibly unlikely and would tantamount to an incredible betrayal and Ambroise had much better taste than to go for a mare who would solely use him as one of many breeding stock. The concept was a touch sordid if one regarded it in this manner, and Ambroise was not naive to his duty towards Elizabeth but he had been confident from the outset that she wouldn't be the stereotypical lowland mare.

...Suffice to say, she wasn't.

She had handled his parents very well and despite his mother's rather dramatic outburst she had remained composed. His father's verbal assault, his queries and his overall concerns had been fielded and she had answered them accordingly. For all intents and purposes, she had comported herself in a manner that was completely fitting as the consort to an heir. She'd performed fabulously and while he hadn't been aiming to throw her right in at the deep end, it would have been wrong for him to assume it would have been smooth sailing - after all, this was his mother he was talking about. When it came to Yei Umeko and Grencia things were never quite as simple as you planned them and Ambroise knew this better than any of his siblings.

He was able to return her smile with a certain amount of stiffness as he recovered his own composure, regarding his parents for a few moments. A few calming breaths later, a deep sigh here and there - eventually he would be back to normal. The immediate news now dispatched the air seemed to fizzle with something between tension (from his father) and rampant curiosity (his mother), it was a rather potent cocktail that would leave Ambroise reeling unless it dampened considerably within the next ten minutes. He hadn't had this sort of rollercoaster ride since he had fought against a certain mutant and even then he would have probably chosen that over this... well, he would have chosen that provided that the amnesia wasn't included in the package.

"So!" Yei finally broke the silence, a bright smile lining her equine lips as she gazed between the new couple that she had firmly accepted. Grencia may have been sceptical but his mate was nothing but the sort and had decided that Elizabeth and she would become fast friends, whether Lizzy was ready for it or not! "Who's for some lunch?" she added and pointed a hoof towards the teepee, smoke was rising from the top but whatever human was inside was perfectly content to remain out of sight. "I have a lovely picnic waiting, it would be wonderful to have some company -"

"I thought I was your company?" Grencia replied mildly, his brow lifting.

"You're always my company but this is my daughter-in-law! It's a very special moment," Yei declared defiantly. Clearly 'no' wasn't an answer she would be accepting this afternoon...

Obviously becoming at ease with her new life was going to entail more than simply becoming acclimated to Ambroise. Disconcerting as this meeting had been, Elizabeth had to be grateful for the opportunity to meet her in-laws in the capacity of daughter-in-law; while it could be argued that they (Grencia in particular) had been a tad aggressive in their queries, they had shown her the closeness of the family and the natural concern they had for Ambroise's well-being. And her own, she supposed, as Grencia HAD asked what she felt of the whole situation.

Yes, it had been a good thing. Perhaps if they had waited until later to make their formal announcement she would have been more poised and less shakable by Grencia's observations, but at least now she knew what to expect going forward.

She would also file this meeting away under 'useful information on the family.' Strange as it seemed to be contemplating this now, she had a strong feeling that she would be very fond of her father-in-law, might even be fond of him now. He had been direct and unsettling, but he had also been calm, honest, and shown a great deal of care for his son's well-being, all characteristics that she could appreciate and admire. Yei was pleasant, kind, and welcoming, but it struck Elizabeth as she considered the two that Grencia was the most like her...or she was the most like him. Hopefully this experiment would go well, not just to she and Ambroise but also to his parents; then, perhaps, they would all be able to truly get along.

Not that Yei wasn't working on that angle now!

At the lunch invitation, Elizabeth's smile brightened a bit, Yei's enthusiasm proving to be contagious. Lunch would be nice, she had to admit; the higher they had climbed in their journey, the more the trek seemed to take out of Liz. Altitudes were something that she had never needed to consider previously, living the lowlands; now, she knew she'd have to get used to them. But right now, she was feeling a bit tired, and very peckish.

Though her first reaction was to look over to Ambroise, silent, but tilting a brow at him in query. Considerate as the invitation was, she was operating on Ambroise's agenda for now and would be as likely to skydive over a waterfall as to make or accept plans without his input. Being as how he was the decision maker, she would leave their acceptance or denial to him.

It was doubtful that Ambroise would always be the decision maker. For now the presence of such a modest mare would be a novelty for him, but eventually it was hoped Elizabeth would grow. If she settled well, she would gain more freedom, responsibility and find things to occupy her day. Decisions wouldn’t be left solely for Ambroise and when he finally took up the reins as the true ‘Alpha’ of Islagiatt she would obviously be his right hand mare. If he had to disappear for a week at a time, perhaps even longer, then she would rule in his steed. However, for the time being it probably was for the best that he was the final say – an unusual thing all the same, given the vast majority of mares in Islagiatt were rather opinionated and perfectly content to offer it.

...Usually at the most inopportune of moments.

“Lunch would be lovely,” Ambroise replied smoothly, his mate’s expression not lost on him as his mother posed the question. She was bound to be hungry after the considerable trek up the slopes; the pickings hadn’t been terribly good on the way up. Admittedly they wouldn’t improve much until spring but at least his mother had a means of making the winter foods tasty enough. Granted he wasn’t entirely aware of how well received bark would be but Elizabeth hadn’t shied away from exploring before. Her reserved nature wasn’t something he hadn’t seen before, but she did seem to possess small instances in which she took the plunge – a lunch would be a simple thing and she certainly needed the sustenance. “In fact, lunch would be fantastic,” he added as he felt the faint rumbles in the pit of his own stomach.

“I echo these sentiments,” Grencia replied without the slightest of nudges from his mate, his own stomach was growling but thankfully wasn’t terribly audible just yet. “What’s for lunch anyway, we only just got back...?” He arched a brow at his mate, rather intrigued at how she would gather foods in the few hours he had been absent.

“Oh just this and that!” Yei remained vague as she shuffled off and returned later with a large bundle of goods, they had been set clumsily in a wicker basket which she had obviously borrowed from her human. She had no hands and carrying large amounts was a no go without assistance but this still didn’t really explain how she’d got it all in the first place. Well not really, her human couldn’t have gathered it as he hadn’t known when they’d come back, had he?

“Speaking of which, how was your holiday?” Ambroise enquired, lifting a brow at his mother’s ability to conjure food out of thin air. It hadn’t made sense as a foal, it still didn’t make sense now and she seemed to be completely oblivious to how odd it was. Alas, who was he to complain when the food tasted so good and he was fed so well?

“Eventful,” Grencia replied with a heavy sigh and ruffled his wings somewhat against his sides.

“Your father was disowned,” Yei explained mildly as she set the basket in the middle of the trio of soquili. “Was all rather dramatic, all the sort of things you’d only hear in fairytales. If it’d been ten years younger I would have swooned!” she declared with a dramatic flourish before giggling, Grencia cleared his throat but failed to hide the smile tweaking at the corner of his lips.

“Oooh pine nuts,” he declared as the food caught the corner of his eye but he was quickly nudged by his mate and had the decency to look sheepish. “Ladies first, of course...”
