The Island of Dr. Moreau Art Contest!

ART CONTEST is OVER - THE JUDGES HAVE SUBMITTED, and the winners are on page 184!

There are about 160 entries!

****

Welcome to the first art contest for the Island of Dr. Moreau! The Island of Dr. Moreau (or "IoDM" for short) is a popular shop from the breedables & changeables subforum, however it has grown to be an involved, interwoven role play setting for all of the players involved.

The main idea behind the setting is a modern version of the classic H.G. Wells' story, though instead of animals being surgically altered into humans, people (usually unwilling victims) are brought or tricked onto the island and genetically altered through a series of injections over several months to become animal/human hybrids. The Dr. Moreau of the island is one Dr. Nicholas Moreau, a descendent of the Alphonse Moreau of literary fame. And the only difference between the setting for the story and the real world, other than the existence of the island and the "science" on it, is that the classic book was never written.

SO! For this art contest, we are looking for art of the numberous subjects and staff characters from this role play! There are nearly ninety player characters to choose from - both subjects and the staff behind the experiments.

Updated periodically.
Only finished pieces are put on the page, not WIPs. Don't bug me about your piece not being up UNLESS you see a piece up that was submitted after yours. I only update them when time allows and I have enough new submissions to warrent one.

Story entries are in a separate directory only because I can't really put them on photobucket.

For the purposes of judging, each entry will be given a number, but the numbers won't perfectly correspond with the order you entered.

Only use the entry form when posting a FINISHED entry. Do Not use for WIPs.

Island of Moreau Serums

There are THREE Island of Dr. Moreau serums up for grabs through this contest!
Serums by:
  • Bilious
  • Sayuri_Nitta
  • AmyD & Kamiki Collaboration

Each winner, offered in order of the value of their prizes from most to least, will be allowed to opt to take a serum instead of the monetary prize. The first person to opt to take a serum gets first pick of artists, the second can choose from the remaining two, etc.
A list of the ranked prizes is HERE.

* = Note 1: the Value of the November and December 03 items have been fluctuating a great deal recently, overlapping in value or one overtaking the other. We may give the winners of the supposed-to-be higher valued prizes (the ones currently assigned the Novembers) choices between the Nov or Dec letter.

Note 2: A writing piece is eligible for any of the above cateogries unless otherwise stated

Note 3: An additional 2 Million gold is held "in reserve" to be given out to entries that rise to the "EVERY Islander" challenge. Whatever gold is left over, the remainder will likely to go creating additional runner-up prizes for categories.

Approximate Total Value: 37,500,000 gold

  • Each entry must include either any of the current islanders, staff, NPC characters, or aspect of the island. This is NOT a contest for the quest characters.
  • All artwork submitted for the contest must be ORIGINAL works by YOU. Any instances of art theft will result in the person entering being disqualified and reported.
  • All artwork must be drawn specifically for this contest - If you drew an islander, etc before, then you can not submit a previously-drawn piece. On that note, if you happened to draw a character who resembles one of the characters, you may not submit that either.
  • The contest ends August 1, 2007 at 11:59 pm. NO WIP extention will be given beyond that point. All entries need to be complete and submitted by that point in time.
  • Both graphical artwork of ANY medium and writing entries (in story form) are viable for this contest. See the FAQ if you have any questions about what sort of writing is valid. The only exception is the following rule:
  • NO Dolls or Avatar edits.
  • Each entry is only eligible to win one prize. Priority is, of course, given to the higher value prize that a piece is eligible for. However, each artist can potentially win multiple prizes if they enter multiple pieces.
  • You may post a WIP (work in Progress) or a revision of an entry, but when you do, do not use the entry form - it will just cause confusion ><. Only use the entry form when you are submitting your actual entry (for the first time).
  • Entries must follow Gaia TOS (ie, they can not be above a PG-13 rating).
  • PNGs on Deviant Art make me cry. I can't save them due to some coding error with DA. I have no problems with .png's in general - if they are hosted elsewhere. I also have no problem with Deviantart with any other file formatting (.jpg, etc) - just not .png.
  • Entries for characters can be submitted of them in ANY of their stages of development, from human to 100% or any mid-stage in-between. Even if a character has not finished their changes yet, you may submit a piece with them in a hypothetical further stage.

  • Please read the first page before asking questions. The FAQ should answer a lot. If you have a question not in the rules or FAQ, then you are welcome to ask in the thread (do not PM questions).
  • If you are going to comment or critique another person's piece or WIP (work in progress) that they have posted, keep the comments constructive. Don't just say "OMG that's great!" Say what you like about it. On the same note, don't say something like "That sucks!". You may give some polite critiques on the entry unless the person submitting it declines feedback. Let's keep a positive, encouraging environment here!
  • Check the drama at the door. Arguments or other personal matters should not be discussed in the thread.
  • Bumping and chit-chat is highly encouraged!

Judging
Since there are SO many characters played by different people, how will this contest be judged?
Each player on the Island of Dr. Moreau, including the owners, will be allowed to help judge and submit nominations for each category. All of the nominations will be considered to have equal weight. The nominations will be tallied up for each category, and the piece with the most nominations will win that category.
The only exception is if a piece receives the most nominations for more than one category. In this instance, it will win the prize with the higher value, and the piece with the 2nd most nominations will with the other category.

ART CONTEST is OVER - TIME FOR JUDGING!

Attention all IoDM character owners! The contest is now over, and there are about 160 entries!

So what that means is that it is time for the judging! Everyone who owns an appointment is allowed to vote, and you have a week to make your decisions.

Please visit THIS THREAD in order to find out how to judge, and for the judging form smile

The Islanders

> A list of ALL the islanders WITH PICTURES is HERE <

This links to a thread with the certificates for each individual islander. Each picture on the cert is imagemapped to link to a full image of that character at that point in their change. Clicking anywhere else on the cert leads to their journal, which has individual information about the character and some of their RPs.

The Staff & NPCs

Couples

Interested in entering the couples section of the contest? Linked HERE is a list of all of the couples on the island (and other relationships that would qualify for that category.

Scenes
There have been quite a few siginifant RPs that have occurred on the island!
The Moreau Inquisitor is a thread that has links and brief descriptions to many different RPs that have been fairly significant, either to the island as a whole, or some of the individual characters involved.
Additionally, each character's certificate (the full list is linked above under "islanders" ) takes you to their journal (several of the staff characters also have journals linked to from their sections. Many of the islanders have links on the front page of their journals to significant RPs that they have been involved in as well.

Official Terms and Definitions

Staff/NPC: A non-"changing" character that is played by shop staff. The character is generally a staffer of Feral Labs.
Complete List: Dr. Moreau, Aubrey Lockheart, Sabin Duvert, Robin Fergusson , Ginerva MacFroo, Delia (the cafeteria lady), James Broadstrom (helicopter pilot), Ein (Aubrey's Dog), Beastie (Sabin's 'cat'), any islander pet, any guard, Annie the Wolf(post-100%), Dr. Frost

Islander/Subject: Characters that have certs, have been injected with DNA and are "changing" into an animal/plant of some kind.
Complete List: Click Here

Character: When the term character is used alone, it can refer to either Satff/NPC or Islander/Subject.

Errata: Annie will be considered an NPC or a Subject depending on how she is depicted. 0%-75% depictions of the character before she went feral will be considered islander. Any 100% depictions will be considered NPC. Stories or art that feature "Before and After" versions of Annie will be elegible for both!

Ex-Staffer Subjects, such as Bia Grey, Lily Delaney, Freddie Rhodes, Newt Filinas, etc, will be considered isalnders/subjects, even if the entry contains a "pre-injection" version of them.

So you read the previous post that had the different types of characters on the island. The previous post had a link to This thread that has images of ALL the islanders. But Here is where we're just posting over the owner's list from the main thread. It is broken down by what phase of the transformation the characters are currently in, however it may not be updated as frequently as the owner's list on the main thread.

But remember, any islander can be drawn at ANY point in their transformation, not just their current stage :3

For the purposes of the "Draw all the islanders" 100k challenge, here is the full list. All the islanders will need to be included (and more than just stick-figures - effort needs to be shown!) except those in the "Deceased/Inactive" islanders category.

Q: Is there an entry fee?
A: Certainly NOT! You shouldn't have to pay me to draw for me - quite the opposite!

Q: Does it have to be in color?
A: No! Not at all - some of the best pictures I've seen are done with high-detail black and white!

Q: what media can I use?
A: Any media you like! Pencil, pen, markers, watercolors, CG of all types, glitter and glue, I'm not picky ^^

Q: Can I write instead of draw?
A:
Yes! We accept -all- forms of art, including Writing if that's your forte ^_^. HOWEVER, if you decide to enter a written entry, it must be a story - NOT a poem, filk, etc.

Q: What do you mean by writing entry? What can I write?
A:
We accept written stories.. When writing a story, think about the leeway people generally have when writing a fan fiction based around something. You can, for example, focus on a point in the given plotline and go into detail about something that happened, make up a situation that follows the plotline, deviate from the plotline with some creative liscence to shape a story, etc. Stories can also take place at ANY point in their backgrounds, present, or future. Have fun.

Q: Can I submit an entry that's a combination of writing and drawing - like a story with an illustration?
A:
Sure!

Q: Can I change their outfit?
A:
I wouldn't see a problem with that.

Q: Can I do an... erm... piece that's above PG-13?
A:
Not for this contest. Please stick to Gaia TOS.

Q: Can I enter more than once?
A:
Yes! Yes of course! You can enter as many times as you like, but there is only one prize per piece allowed.

Q: Does it have to be one (or more) of the IoDM characters?
A:
Yes, that's kinda the point >.>

Q: Can I submit a piece I drew for one of the owners before?
A:
NO. All pieces submitted to this contest must be new for the contest. However, if you've drawn for me before, all the better and you've had practice ^_~. The only exception to this is for artwork that may have made arrangements for already, but the artist has opted to reneg on payment in order to take their chances as a contest entry. Also, any artwork that has already been completed and shown to us before February 2007, not eligible for this.

Q:I was commissioned to draw an islander. Can I enter the art?
A:
NO. I know that this was touched on already, but I need to re-emphasize this. You can only do one or the other - be commissioned for a piece OR enter it into the contest.

Q:How do I know that this is legit?
A:
The owners of IoDM have run many art contests in the past (Sabin Duvert, Kamiki being two of them). The gold is set aside, and several Mods are frequent patrons of the shop.

Q:When I submit my entry, do I have to say what category or categories I'm entering??
A:
Nope. Just enter the piece. As we judge, we will start at the top and work my way down through the prizes by value picking appropriate pieces to win. Most pieces will likely be inherantly eligible for MANY of the categories.

Q:What's an Island of Dr. Moreau appointment, and what can I do with it?
A:
Island of Dr. Moreau, aka "IoDM" is an illustrated RP in the breedable / changable forum. The winner can get a character of their choice onto the Island and access to the RP - and of course, five unique pieces of art by the artist to illustrate their transformation into an animal over the process of the RP.
If you win and excercize this option, you will negotiate with the owners of IoDM the specifics of the character, etc. Like any newcomer islanders, the new character would need to be approved to fit the setting by the staff. As far as the specifics of what the character becomes - the details are negotiable if this option is selected. If the winner wants the IoDM appointment, they can either keep it for themselves, or give it to someone (but not sell it).

Want to know more about the setting that the story/RP takes place in? This is the post for you :3

The physical location of Moreau's island is near the Carribbean, on the southern side of the Bermuda Triangle. The location, often shrouded in mystery, serves its purposes by providing an almost in-born excuse as to why there might be mysterious disappearances in its viscinity and deter some from looking too hard for further explanations/the Island itself.

The setting itself is modern Earth. Outside of the island, the world is very much the same as the real world. The only notable exceptions being that the book "The Island of Dr. Moreau" by H.G. Wells was never written, and the existence of the parent company that Moreau owns, Feral Laboratories. This privately-owned multinational business is the source of Nicholas Moreau's funding and research pool. Additionally, the company cover provides Moreau access to medical files and personnel records to allow him to hand-pick likely targets to be tricked to be brought onto the island who would not be missed. Most of the subjects aren't outright kidnapped, but lured onto the island with some sort of lie - be it a free vacation, a "two week" medical study, an exotic photo shoot, a job opportunity, etc. Of course, once they arrive, Moreau controlls the only ways on or off the island and they're stuck. Any necessary cover story to tell the rest of the world is sent out to cover their disappearence, but most of the time subjects are picked because they are easy to dissappear.
Of course, the location in the bermuda triangle also has helped more than a normal number of plane or boat crashes near the island. The fact that the island is surrounded by a partially man-made reef to tear up the bottoms of boats helps too.

The island is fairly-sized, but small enough to not be on most notations. It is about twenty miles across at the widest points. Most of it is covered by a deep jungle, though areas have been clear-cut for the village (the collection of duplexes the subjects live in) and the labs (which are surrounded by a high-voltage electric fence. The labs are built into the side of a dormant volcano that is in the center of the island. Sandy beaches are on the west side of the island, a rockier ledge on the east. There is a network of caves within the island itself. There is also a freshwater river system through the island, and a large lake near the village.

On the island itself, the whole system is highly monitered - think Big Brother. There are hidden cameras in all of the subjects' duplexes and all over the island. Each subject is inserted with a microchip in the back of their necks that tracks their location on the island, and allows them to be "buzzed" unconscious in the event of a bad fight or in order to administer them their follow up injections. Even the staff of the island is not allowed communication off the island, and a couple of staff members have even been turned into subjects due to misbehavior. Thus far, there have been no successful escape attempts.

But, all in all, the subjects are usually treated well, despite the kidnapping and being turned into an animal-creature. They are each assigned a duplex and have free reign over the island (with the exception of the labs, which are sectioned off by an electric fence). There is a cafeteria, entertainment room with movies and video games, sunny beaches, and deep tropical jungles. However, more than one lab tech has a cruel streak (it takes a certain kind of person to be picked to work for the labs) and use the subjects for some less than ethical psychological tests.

Ultimately, the Island of Dr. Moreau RP is a horror setting RP with drama, intrigue, mystery and plots alongside the normal relationship and character development common to other breedables RPs.
