Sexual Preference: Heterosexual
Prospects: Transforming into a Mer Blue Tang!

Personality:
Sayuri has never quite lived up to either of her given Geisha names ( Sayuri is a zodiac symbol coupled with understanding, Satoharu means 'wise and light'. Sayuri is neither of those things. At times foolish, clumsy and exceedingly naive, she believes a great deal of what she is told, and tends to be somewhat of a disaster area.
However, she does have an uncomplicated mind, and is often considered endearing because she likes to believe that everyone is her friend, and that life is worth living, and enjoying. However this is possibly somewhat of a mask, for deep down she has a inkling that things tend to go wrong, and that she is somewhat of a disappointment to her okiya, and okasan (house mother).
Her nails are ragged because she has a terrible habit of biting them, another less then wanted habit for an elegant Geisha to be. Because of her nature, despite being clumsy, and not being a shining example of the qualities needed for her intended profession, she doesnt yet want to give up, and wears the hairstyle, makeup and kimono religiously, hoping that if she does this long enough it will somehow outweigh her personality defects and the 'geisha within' will blossom!
Appearance:
Sayuri is 5'3", and a average Japanese build (veering on curvaceous). Her hair is done up in the maiko hairstyle wareshinobu, and has been that way for 5 years as she has never quite managed to make it to become a Geisha. She is always seen in the full makeup, and wearing an elaborate furisode (swinging sleeve) kimono with trailing obi. Her hair is black, her eyes brown, and she looks unremarkable normally, but has an infectious grin which lights her plain face up. She has ragged nails from nail biting.

Personal History:

Sayuri comes from a long line of successful, elegant Geisha..and her dream as a little girl was to grow up and go out dressed up like her mother did, entertaining priveleged and wealthy gentleman. Sayuri's mother has often despaired of Sayuri's inability to learn the simplest of things, and her persistent clumsiness. She has gone from the barest of patience with her bumbling daughter, to an almost hostility and ill concealed contempt.

Sayuri was not a graceful child; she got into scrapes through her naive acceptance of everything she was told. She often got lost in the streets of the hanamachi (flower town or Geisha district), and was almost taken on as the servant in a brothel as she was mistaken for a gutter child in her dishevelled state, an incident that causes her okiya much embarrassment when she was finally located.
She was persistent though, attending the kaburenjo for lessons, the teachers there trying to hammer the basics into her sieve like mind. Sayuri would learn something one day, seem to have a handle of the moves of a dance for example, and the next she would once more possess two left feet.
She often got embarrassed when she was taken to teahouses to listen, watch and learn from Geisha, the men would make fun of her clumsiness, teasing when she tripped on the hem of her kimono, or liken her head to a melon gourd behind her back. She did however become a favourite of the more elderly customers who were old enough to be patient with her, which allowed her pleasant nature to come through, and for her smile to shine.

As it is now, she is presently still struggling to come to a point where her skills are sufficient for her to move on from being a maiko, becoming more then a prettily attired ornament. But she might not have the luxury of this path for much longer, her okasan, and her birth mother have become tired of paying for the house klutz, and would like to find a way for the young woman to become someone elses problem.

How Sayuri gets to the Island:

She needs to become someone else's problem...

Sayuri had little idea that she was going to be packed off to the Island. But, her 'dear' mother had been approached with an interesting proposition...

Sayuri had been noticed during a tea party, hosted by a very wealthy business man, and attended by several other men of equal standing, including a senior from Feral Labs.
She had caught the gentleman's eye during the revelries, a condom had been procured, and the poor girl was told it was a novelty balloon, and was tasked with blowing it up. Sayuri's naive belief that she was a part of the joke, as opposed to the butt of it, then her clumsiness which resulted in the 'balloon' bursting and sticking to her lacquered hair made her a prime candidate in the gentleman from Feral lab's mind. Even more so after discrete inquiries into the girl's chequered history.
Through the mistress of the teahouse, intial contact was made with Sayuri's mother, who obviously was at first a little sceptical about being approached by such an obviously well off man about her most worthless daughter. But, after a few meetings, and some displays of the man's wealth, her mother agreed that he would become Sayuri's patron. She was swayed mostly by the fact that he would take on her financial burdens, which were many...Sayuri had by that time managed to accidently set alight three of their kimono collection, which were in themselves very costly.
It was explained to Sayuri's mother that because of the nature of his business he spent much time away, and sometimes overseas, so a place would be brought where Sayuri would need to move to. Her mother readily agreed to this also, it wasnt unknown for patrons to set up houses for the Geisha they sponsored, and as the girl would no longer be a burden, she believed that she had done her duties by her daughter.
Sayuri was of course given no say in any of this, and as she believed herself to be finally becoming a proper Geisha, happy that she had found a patron who would help finance her schooling, her kimonos and any performances that she would put on, accepted it all with very few protests.
Sayuri was packed up..her belongings crated up, and she went ahead of them to meet her future patron, believing that her belongings were to be sent along after her...
Whether she received them after arriving at the Island is unknown - the rest after that is yet to come!

"Geisha," pronounced /gei sa/ ("gei-" rhymes with "may") is the most familiar term to English speakers. Like all Japanese nouns, there are no distinct singular or plural variants of the term. The word consists of two kanji, 芸 (gei) meaning "art" and 者 (sha) meaning "person" or "doer." The most direct translation of geisha into English would be "artist" or "art's person."

Another term used in Japan is 芸子 (geiko), a word from the Kyoto dialect. This generally refers to mid-ranked women who are still young and have not yet achieved full geisha status.

Apprentice geisha are called 舞子 or 舞妓 (both pronounced maiko). This word is made of the kanji 舞 (mai) meaning "dancing" and 子 or 妓 (ko) meaning "child" or "young girl." In actual practice, it is the maiko, with her white make-up and elaborate kimono and wigs, that has become the stereotype of a geisha to Westerners, rather than the more demure geisha.

Sake no hitotsu ga
En no hashi...

Dr.Sabin Duvert: Is he my Danna-san or isnt he? It's all so very confusing. He said he had anticipated my arrival so I think he is. I cannot believe that my Okasan would allow such a man to be my Danna! But if I complain, well it would bring such shame for me to be returned to my okiya..
Updated: I think he is my Danna, is it bad of me to hope he is? I really am starting to like him, but I'm not sure if that is a good thing. I do not know if he is married, he has not mentioned a family but can I hope that he is not as well?

Gaius Harper: He was - nice I suppose. His skin was too dark, his hair too brown, and his eyes too blue and wide. He spoke to the Doctor about things I did not understand and got excited about them. I do not know if I will see him again but maybe if he is working on the Island.

Newton Filinas: He was very odd, and spoke with a stammery voice which made it hard to understand alot of what he said. He seems to have been affected by some sort of curse! I wonder who he angered to become that strange frog-man. He kept trying to tell me something about the Island, but it was hard to take seriously the words of a man who can catch flies with his tongue..

Maryke Jimenez: A woman with power. She seems like one not to cross, and she was the first that I believed about the true purpose of my being on the Island. She scares me a little, and reminds me strongly of my own mother. Despite not being Japanese, I think she has pretty hair.

F: Such an odd man. He speaks in a strange way which I find a little hard to understand. When I saw him he had a pet goat. He has changed a little, his face has a line down the middle and his mouth looks not quite right. He dances with fire sticks, and wants to see me dance at some point.

Emerwyn: I was afraid of her looks at first but she is a very gentle and kind person. I hope very much will be friends as she said we would.

Sid Eisley: He is older then anyone I have met so far, and crankier! He said he was a writer, and seemed to be scared of the changes that are coming.

Odd squid-octopus man: I do not know his name, but he is very mean, and angry. He grabbed me when I went swimming in the Lake - he said it was his! And when I was wearing that costume that didnt cover much at the Festival he grabbed my leg!

Aislinn Derry: She speaks my language! I am very happy to finally meet someone who I can talk easily to if need be. She was pleasant. Has a bad hip and leg, and used to work with animals. She seems to think that people are turning into dinosaurs. I do not know why.

Osbourne Caldwell: I first met him at the Festival. He was very kind, and spoke to me alot. He is a very big man, and I am reminded of the sumo wrestlers back home when I see him.
When we went to the beach, he carried me and then later kissed me. When I changed again, he was very worried for me and carried me to his Duplex and let me sleep in his bed. I think about him often and want to see him again.

Charlie Haston: I talked to this red haired man at Festival for a short time. He caught me dancing but was good and did not say I was bad, even though I was. I only spoke to him for a little while.

Disclaimer;
I do not pretend to be an expert on Geisha/Geiko - it isnt possible to know all the customs unless you are one. I have however read alot of different literature on the subject and strive for accuracy as much as possible.

English Translation for kouta's (from 1st post onwards);
If it's a shallow river
Lift your skirts up to your knees
But as the water deepens
Untie your sashes please.

A lingering speck of dust
Auspicious now,
When things begin.

Even the plums blush ripely
Around the time
Of the late spring rains.

The spring wind whispers
Bring in fortune!
Fragrant plums breathe
Drive out devils!
Is it rain?
Is it snow?
I don't care -
We'll go this evening
and tomorrow too,
Drinking
Ginger sake

Whatever,
As you like it,
The willow.

My body flesh and hair is
Received from Mom and Dad,
But the one thing I don't show them
I'll show to you my lad.

My lonely departure
From Kyoto.
Hiding tears
At the train window,
Oh please, please,
Someone give me
A cup of tea.

Sakura, sakura,
When is it that people
Gad about under the cherry?
From the end of March
To the middle of April,
it's nothing but
Bloomin' blooms of
Sakura.

One cup of sake,
The beginning of
A relationship...

If you've got three strings, you can eat.

This ukiyo wife!
Mincing lightly
Changes her garment.

Even more wonderful
As they fall,
The cherry blossoms.
Does anything last
In this grievous world?
