Profile

Name: Lucas Wickham

Age: 23 (but is often mistaken for someone younger)

Eyes: Green (missing left eye, now wears eyepatch)

Hair: Light brown

Height: 5'9"

Weight: 150

Birthdate: December 7th, 1983

Build: Not as thin as a rail, but still thin, has a bit of muscle, but not toned

Occupation: Part-time waiter, part-time bookstore clerk, and wants/tries to be a freelancer writer. Hopes to publish a book someday

Family: Samuel Wickham (father) and Andrea Wickham (mother)

Likes: Paranormal, UFOs, mythology, mythical creatures, The Mysterious, fantasy, sci-fi, ramen, books, running, snow, candy/desserts, rain, comic books, jogging, video games,

Dislikes: Fakes, perverts, being hot, mosquitos, crying, spicy foods, carrots, violence,

Hobbies/Skills: Paranormal study, reading, writing, watching television, video games, etc. Lucas was also taught how to cook and sew by the landlady. He's got the basics of both, but he wouldn't be called talented or an expert.

Clothing: Lucas is almost always seen wearing jeans, comfortable shirts, an old belt watch, and a pair of glasses for his nearsightedness. Most of his clothes are hand me downs and anything of his father's that he can fit into. While out in the cold he always wears his father's old trenchcoat, which is a little too big for him. However, in the tropical climate on the island, he wouldn't wear it outside much. Nowadays he hangs it in the closet as a comfort thing and a reminder. He often has a backpack or messenger bag with him that usually contains notebooks, some candy, a book or comic book of some kind, a water bottle and a camera.

Distinguishing features: Nothing really stands out about Lucas. Physically, anyway. It's when he opens his mouth and starts talking to people about his interests that get him odd looks. EDIT: Now that he no longer has a left eye, he wears an eyepatch. If the eyepatch is not on, it would be his stitched up eyelid.

Personality: A nerd. Well, not quite. A playful person that loves to make jokes and is very curious. He is also very hardworking and can't stand being idle. He can be somewhat stubborn and a bit slow to react. It usually takes time for him to analyze and mull things over before he makes a decision. When he doesn't think and reacts first, it often gets him into trouble.

Lucas is always trying to have fun and keep a positive attitude about everything. A trait he received from his father. However, he's not the overly positive, hyper and excited-type (he does get excited when he comes across things he's interested in or energetic/goofy when he tries to cheer someone up) to the point where he gushes sunshine and rainbows. He's reserved and usually calm, but keeps a smiling face. Unfortunately sometimes the smile is forced. Deep down he is tired, frustrated and lonesome, but he hides that. He always tries to keep his spirits up believing it could always be worse and reminding himself that someone out there is doing a lot worse than he. To avoid dwelling on the negative he fills his life with things to do that make him happy. So when he isn't struggling to keep up with the rent and other expenses he is nose-deep in a good book, researching strange events and writing stories. Lucas would be described by others as a very kind, hardworking boy, though he doesn't always get things right. But also very weird mainly because of his obsession with all things strange.

Despite things that occured in his past, Lucas gives everyone the benefit of the doubt and sometimes can be a little too trusting of others. That's not to say he trusts them with his personal thoughts and feelings. He is still reluctant to discuss his past with just anyone. But he will believe the best of people and that tends to open up a door for others to take advantage of him. Because of this he's been hurt on a few occasions. Lucas also struggles with forgiving people once he's been hurt.

Also, romance makes him very uncomfortable and he is sometimes shy around women. Most pick up lines and advances will usually be mistaken for something else by him, since he can be pretty oblivious sometimes (one might wonder if he chooses to be oblivious). But if someone makes it very clear they are interested he will become scared and probably run off. His reluctance to enter a relationship has increased since he last talked with his mother.

History

Lucas grew up as an only child in a small apartment with his parents. Their small family wasn't rich, but they weren't poor. When he was about two years old his mother divorced his father and took off, choosing to leave him behind. Lucas would still say he had a very happy childhood. His father was very attentive and spent as much time as he could with him. Unfortunately work ate up more time than they would of liked since he worked long shifts. The landlady, who's name is Nonie, also took good care of Lucas while his father worked and was almost like a grandmother to him.

He had a normal childhood. He went to school, managed passing grades, occasionally tried out for track, tried playing sports with the other boys in his apartment complex, had braces, and even had a paper route when he was 12. And, like other kids, he also had his share of bullies and unkind words thrown his way. He was teased quite often for his interest in aliens, werewolves, the Lochness monster and the like. Because of his strange obsession he was often alone.

Lucas' interest in the paranormal was started by his father. Together the two would watch science fiction and paranormal shows and movies (Star Wars, Star Trek, X-files, Unsolved Mysteries, Quantum Leap, etc), and read fantasy stories and comic books. Whenever something interested him he'd learn as much about it as he could.

Lucas has a lot of love and respect for his father. He was his teacher, role model and best friend. It was very hard on him when he died from a stroke when he was twenty, but because of things he taught him he made it through. Shortly after his father died he went searching for his mother. What he found upset him greatly and he is still working through what he learned in both his heart and mind. He still tries to maintain a postive outlook, but he struggles.

Currently still living in the same apartment he grew up in, Lucas works hard in order to remain there. Working two jobs keeps him busy, but he still tries to find the free time to write articles and short stories that he sends to different magazines hoping they'll be published. Still with no luck. In the mean time he posts most of his writings up on his website about the paranormal.

There are several things that Lucas keeps to himself, especially things concerning his mother and his father.

On the desk Lucas would have his laptop, the photo of his father in a frame, a bag of candy, his squeeze toy, and scattered papers and notebooks. On the shelves would be more notebooks and binders, the different books and magazines he brought with him, a few more photographs left loose, his CDs, and his camera. He's also ordered a sewing machine from the labs, which he sets up on the desk and usually leaves in the closet.

Inside the fridge he would always try to have it stocked with bottles of water, soda, fruit juices and some fruit, such as apples, oranges and bananas. On top of the fridge there would be stacks of instant ramen and other snack foods.

There are still a few bloodstains left by Emelyn on the gray carpet that he has yet to clean out.

Gaius gave him a special chair for Christmas, so that is also somewhere in the duplex.

There are also two bowls for Dasher on the floor, some chew toys for him, and a large pillow near the bed.

Impressions

Doctor Sabin Duvert - He appeared to me at first to be a man who shared a smilar interest in the paranormal and mythological. I thought we might get along, but that was before I learned the truth about the Island and that I'd been fooled. I'm not sure what to think of the doctor anymore. I wonder now if everything he told me when we met had just been more lies to string me along and trust him. EDIT: I hate him. I think more than I hate Moreau. If someone could poke his eye out for me they'd be my hero.

Ambrose Maurlias - At first I really thought he was a werewolf. I kind of wish we'd met under better circumstances. That night wasn't really loads of fun for either of us. We only spoke briefly, but he seemed like a good person. EDIT: Things have been pretty rough for him recently, too. And I said some things that upset him. I don't think he hates me, but it feels like things might be awkward next time I see him.

Emelyn White - A kind woman, but unfortunately very sad and lonely. She's been hurt and betrayed and has been living out in the wild for months by herself. For some reason I'm drawn to her and really want to help her out. EDIT: I really enjoy spending time with her. Things don't seem so bad when she's around. I'm not sure what to make of that kiss, either. ...we're just friends, right?

Reuben the Dog - Also known to me as Sandwich (it's a joke!), I'd never call him that in front of anyone, though. Reuben belongs to Emelyn and has been living with her in her cave. While she's in the labs I've been looking after him. He could use some obedience training and most certainly needs to be housebroken. EDIT: He's back with Emelyn. I missed him for a while, but Dasher has filled the hole Reuben left.

Emerwyn - She's a sweet woman, if a little odd. She's also a bit mysterious and I wonder if she tries to put up a strong exterior to hide her real feelings? She seems to have good advice and I'm glad I met her. Hopefully we'll cross paths again soon.

Bia Grey - A nice woman, if a bit on the quiet side. It was hard to talk with her. She was nice enough to inform me about the Requisition Office.

Nita MacNeal - Helpful and Emelyn is our mutual friend. She seemed like a very nice girl and I hope to talk to her again.

Gaius Harper - A really great guy and apparently turning into a pegasus. To be honest, I wish I was turning into that instead of a dhole. Right now I'm helping him build a theater so the other Islanders can put on shows. He also made me a chair for Christmas. He's got a strange sense of humor when he's drunk, though.

Brian Grant - Timid guy. It seems he is a sort of expert on canines, mostly on wolves. But he did know things about Dholes when most everyone else has never heard of them (me included before the Island). I might go looking for him again for more information.

Zachary Bloodstone - At first I thought he was cool. A real life dragon. Then he opened his mouth and I realized he was a complete jerk. He's been completely taken in by Feral Labs and their lies and tries to force his views on people. He even shoved a raw, bloody turkey in my face, to accept being an animal and told me to eat it. EDIT: Zach did it again. I couldn't handle it anymore, so I snapped and clawed him. I hadn't meant to, but I took out his eye. Thanks to Zach being Sabin's pet, I got punished by having my own eye removed. I regret what I did, but I do not feel bad for Zach. I hope I never see him again.

Rachel Collison - A sweet girl that I unfortunately had to reveal the truth of the island to. Except for the fainting part, she seemed to take it okay. She doesn't look all that healthy and rather frail. I hope she'll be okay. I'm a little worried about her. EDIT: Oh...geez... The labs are turning her into a killer whale. I had hoped she might get something less traumatic. I can't imagine what it will be like for her. Another reason why I hate the labs and their sick sense of humor.

Dasher - He's my dog, sometimes I call him Dash. For some reason the labs decided to give him to me for Christmas. I have no idea why. I'm not the only one who has received a dog. Even thought I'm a bit suspicious of what the reason might be, I am still very glad to have him around. I don't feel quite so lonely anymore. He's very energetic and affectionate. Walks are required at least twice a day. I don't mind so much, though. With as much as he eats, he needs the activity or he might get fat. [link to journal post] [pic of Dasher]

Newton Filinas - And I thought Brian was timid. This guy couldn't stop stuttering. It took a while before he felt safe enough to come out from behind the trashcan. I don't think I look that scary... Newton used to work as a janitor for Feral Labs, but ended up as a subject being turned into a frog. Poor guy is being forced to continue his work as a janitor and gets harrassed by his former employers. I promised to help him get some bits of metal which he collects. Not sure what for.

Dholes
(cuon alpinus)

Physical Appearance:
Their thick, dense fur's color can range from a deep cinnamon to a greyish brown and even yellowish-creamy colored, with white on the throat, legs and face. Their tail is usually tipped with black, and they usually have an area of darker hair on their backs. Their ears are rounded and large, and are filled with white hair. The dhole's hair is longer and lighter-colored in the northern parts of their range, and darker and shorter in the southern parts of their range. They have a short square muzzle that enables them to have a very powerful bite. Unlike other canids, dholes have only two molars on each side of the lower jaw, as opposed to three. So they only have 40 teeth, opposed to the normal 42. Males tend to be significantly larger than the females.

Diet:
The dhole eats wild berries, insects, and lizards. Packs of dholes feast on mammals ranging from rodents to deer. Some of the dhole's favorites include wild pigs, hares, wild goats, sheep, and occasionally a monkey. Although the dhole is not a fast runner, it has great stamina, and will pursue prey for hours. As it is an excellent swimmer, it will often drive its prey into water. The dhole is capable of killing prey ten times its own size, and will defend kills very violently. It has been seen killing bears and tigers. Unlike many other "dogs," the dhole seldom kills by biting the throat. Larger mammals are attacked from the rear, while smaller ones are caught by any part of the bodies. The smaller mammals are killed by a swift blow to the head; the larger mammals are immediately disembowled. Dholes compete for the food, not by fighting, but by how fast they can eat. An adult dhole can eat up to 4kg (8.8lbs) of meat in one hour. Two to three dholes can kill a 50kg (110 lb) deer in less than two minutes, and they begin to feed on it before it is dead. The larger prey rarely die from the attack itself, but from blood loss as its body parts are feasted upon. (omnivore, but primarily carnivore)

Habitat:
Dholes like open spaces and can often be found on jungle roads, river beds, jungle clearings, and paths, where they rest during the day. Their hunting range is about 40sq km (15sq mi). The dhole can also be found in dense forest steppes, and the thick jungles of the plains as well as the hills. They are never found in the open plains and deserts.

Behavior:
The dhole is a highly sociable and cooperative animal, like the Timber wolf, the Amazonian Bush Dog, and the African Hunting Dog. Generally it lives in organized, extended-family packs of five to twelve individuals (this number rarely exceeds twenty five), with more males, sometimes twice as many more, than females, and usually just one breeding female. Large packs of over forty dholes have been sighted, possibly resulting from the temporary fusion of neighboring packs. Within dhole packs, there is almost never any aggression – there is a strict social hierarchy, so fighting is not needed - or bullying.

Dholes are very fond of water. After meals they race to a water site, and sometimes, if the water is near their kill, dholes will leave their food for a small drink of water. They have also been spotted sitting in shallow pools of water regardless of the temperature. Just as domestic dogs, dholes wag their tails. The dhole can leap to at least 2.3 meters (7.5 feet).

The dhole has some extraordinary vocal calls. It can make high-pitched screams, mew, hiss, yelp, chatter, and cluck like a chicken. Its most well known sound is its strange whistle, likened by early naturalists to the sound obtained when air is blown over an empty cartridge. These calls are used for contact within the pack. The whistles are so distinct that individual dholes can be identified by it.

Threats and Conservation:
Dholes are endangered due to prey base loss, habitat loss, and being killed by humans. Historically they have been trapped for their fur. They are often poisoned, trapped, shot, and their den sites destroyed. In India, diseases like canine distemper and rabies take a great toll on the dhole. Poison bait programs in Russia that are aimed at wolves have decimated dhole populations there.

Dholes have become an indirect food source for the residents of the jungles. Dholes do not attack human beings, and they usually retreat at the sight of a person. Human residents of the jungle follow dholes when they are hunting. When the dhole completes its kill, the human hunters scare it away and steal its kill.

Hunting of dholes has been prohibited in Russia since 1971. In India, they are protected under Schedule I the wildlife act of 1972, which prohibits killing of wildlife except in self-defense. They also occur in several protected national parks and wildlife sanctuaries throughout India and Nepal. The dhole is mostly rare throughout its range, and packs are fragmented.
