Personality: Manuel is a cruel, oily sort of man who has no morals about conning others in order to crawl to the top. When faced with people of higher authority, he's almost sickly sweet, smiling, pleasant, all while plotting smoothly how to get them into a position where they can be black-mailed. He's one to plot, rather than take action, knowing that slow, well-thought revenge is so much sweeter than lashing out, yet this state of mind only seems to be connected with those stronger than him. People like his wife, he'll bully mercilessly, but Mercedes is the only one who he's been physically aggressive with so far. Against those who he disrespects or views as 'weaker' than he is, Manuel is an assertive man who dislikes having his dominance questioned, having a strong urge to make it known that he's completely in control. Manuel also suffers from paranoia, believing that he is the only person who he can truly trust, so this makes him jumpy and unwilling to settle in just one place for long. He's a surprisingly smooth sweet talker, and is quite good at convincing people to do things--he also has known to be a bit sexist towards women.
Background: Manuel grew up in Tijuana, Mexico and spent most of his childhood living in poverty. His family had barely managed to scrape up enough money to send him to school, and, though he struggled, he did manage to obtain a decent education. After coaxing his parents to sell some of their possessions, Manuel managed to smuggle himself over the border to America--the land of golden opportunity. There, he met Mercedes, his future wife, who hid him out of kindness at first. Soon, they married, and Manuel was able to open up an illegal shop as a pawn-broker. Basically, he bought stolen goods from thieves for extremely cheap prices, threatening to turn them in otherwise, and then sold them for much higher. He and Mercedes have been forced to move constantly in order to avoid suspicion.
