Soft snores filled the air of Faolan Grady’s vardo at Farstep carnival, along with the purring of a small grey cat. Or . . . was the vardo considered hers now, too? Ellandra wondered idly about that possibility as she lay awake, listening to her fortune-teller and his Essentic snore in tandem – which she might have thought unusual, had she not known how tightly Essentic and Owner were linked. She was thankful that Faolan was asleep right now, because if he awoke and saw how frightened she was of the thunder rumbling in the distance, he would sacrifice the rest of his sleep just to be sure she stayed calm. That was something she didn’t want to happen. The fortune-teller was already in enough trouble, thanks largely in part to her timidity and inability to handle the feelings that so often overwhelmed her – he didn’t need to add poor work because of a lack of rest to it all.

Sighing softly, Ellandra sat up, leaned over and kissed the sleeping half-demon’s cheek, a blush coming over her at even this small action. She bit back a whimper as another faint roll of thunder echoed around, and scooped up Rags, ignoring the kitty’s mewl of protest at being moved. She held the feline close to her heart, trying to force her rising panic down by will alone. It didn’t work very well. The brunette hugged the slightly struggling cat tightly and squeezed her eyes closed. Unfortunately, it was becoming rather obvious that love wasn’t a cure-all; far too many of her phobias and nervous habits were still plaguing her, even after finding the love of her life in the fortune-teller.

Her recent experiences with the people at Life Essentials and those connected to it had enveloped her calm, but lonely life in a hurricane of confusion, rethinking, and rising emotions. She was certain that she loved Faolan entirely and completely, and that he loved her in return, but there was so much in the world that still threatened to knock her upside-down and sideways. While she was living more than she had in a long time, there remained some obstacles – like this fear of thunderstorms, she thought as another rumble filled the air and she ducked down under the covers with a squeak – that she just couldn’t overcome on her own.

She couldn’t ask Faolan to take more time out of his job and his needs in order to help her with these problems; and there was only so much that he could help her with, anyway. So what option was left to her, when she refused to let these fears continue to rule her?

The Essentics she had met so far – Misha, Aria, Ziazan, and Lauss – all had purposes of such varying types; but they all had one thing in common: they accomplished their purpose fully, and loved doing so. Perhaps, just perhaps, there was an Essentic that could be provided with a purpose that would fulfill the creature’s innate need while helping her conquer her timidity and her phobias? If so, she would have to see about obtaining one. Banning had said the offer was still open, after all, and perhaps having one of its siblings around on a near-constant basis would help little Ziazan with the troubles it had been having of late, as well.

’Yes,’ Ellandra thought as she cowered under the blankets from the rapidly approaching storm. ‘I’ll have to go to the shop tomorrow.’ Tomorrow, yes, definitely tomorrow, once the storm had passed and the weather was nice again. She snuggled closer to the still-sleeping Faolan, trembling starting to overtake her small form. It only increased when another thought crossed her mind. ‘Oh, dear . . . how will Miss Longway react to me showing up?’
