Disgraceful. Unacceptable. Humiliating. Lee's conduct was not going to be tolerated, and if she continued to insist that she was to marry a pikey... Let's not even think about that. The shame that it would bring to the family. The future that her daughter would have to endure. And the grandchildren... oh god, the children those two would produce... Stop thinking about it! Time to take action.
Mrs. Katan had never been more thankful that she was a heavy gossiper. If she hadn't been, she'd never have learned of poor William Telemacchus Jr.'s humiliation when trying to claim his promised Miss Sanders. Apparently she, too, had fallen for a pikey, and William had failed to win her over. But Mrs. Katan had an offer for the man. Perhaps she could help him save a little face. Let's call him up, shall we?
Mrs. Katan stormed up to the phone and punched in William 's number, and waited as the phone rang. The other end picked up, and a short greeting was given. "Hello, Mister Telemacchus. This is Katan speaking. I'm going to get right to business if you don't mind. I have... a proposition." Her voice was stern and quite unemotional, and her expression matched nicely. "I would like to offer you my daughter."
What she hadn't heard from her gossip circle was that this was the same man, the same "pikey" that Miss Sanders was married to. That William had met this man before. That William probably hated this man more than anyone on Drente. And here she was, asking him to try and take a girl that had fallen for that same man.

William Telemacchus, Jr., had not been having a pleasant time of it lately. First that humiliation of a beating at the hands of that terrible horned pikey, then getting his fifth best suit ruined by mud and vegetables, and having to endure to gossip - sympathetic though some of it may have been, getting beaten on by a pikey did nothing for one's social status. So he was quite pleased to hear from Mrs. Katan and to receive her offer.
Yes, the Katan daughter was a fair bit younger than him, but the family fortune more than made up for any age difference. "Why, Mrs. Katan, I'm quite flattered at your offer, but might I ask why so sudden of an offer? Did something happen, my dear?" He turned his attention away from the phone that was lodged between his ear and his shoulder for a moment, giving his attention to the manicurist who was putting his nails back in order after that dreadful mess at that flea-infested carnival.

Oh, he had to ask... The woman couldn't compose herself any longer. She put a hand to her forehead in frustration and humiliation. "I'm afraid she's been seeing some pikey, like that Miss Sanders. Just the thought of it..." She shook her head with disgust. "Dear, I'm afraid you simply must help her. What better way to redeem yourself than by saving a poor girl from such a life?" She was sadly unaware that the man had heard quite a similar story not long ago. That hadn't ended well for the poor man.
So Lee was a little young. But really, she was almost 18. It was almost legal. And perhaps the girl wasn't the best educated. Perhaps she wouldn't quite make the best wife, hostess, or mother. But she had a pretty face. Maybe not beautiful, but she was decent. Mrs. Katan began to dread his response. Her daughter wasn't exactly the best Drente had to offer, but she could at least try. After that humiliating defeat, if William was planning on keeping his dignity, he had no choice.
Lee, meanwhile, was upstairs in her bedroom, tending to little Lauss after his encounter with Vin. Sure, he wasn't dying, but his wrist was aching and... he couldn't move. His hovering abilities still hadn't kicked in yet. "Stop it." Lauss was pulling at the makeshift cast Vin had crafted him, trying to move it so he could scratch. "But Miss Lee--" "Stop. If you take that thing off it'll hurt. Reeeeally bad, too. I don't want to hear your screams." Lauss quickly refrained from his tugging and laid back on Lee's bed, back straight as a pin. No more pain, please. Lee handed him a book and nodded to him. "There. Entertain yourself." She thought to herself a bit. "You want me to call Rhian over?" Lauss dropped his book and looked over to his master with delight. "Please." Lee laughed at him a bit and rolled her eyes. He liked her, almost too much. But it was probably the cutest thing he'd ever done in her book, so she supported it fully. She stood up and headed out of the room, on her way to pick up the phone and invite the little butterfly over.

"Why yes, of course I'll accept her hand, Mrs. Katan," William said, while watching the manicurist to make sure the job on his nails was done properly. While the girl was really nothing special, the fortune that would come with her someday most certainly was. And William. . . .well, he was a fool - not that he knew it - but he knew what getting more money would mean. Better stylists, better tailors. . . and a better manicurist. "I think that's a very fine idea. If your daughter's gotten it into her head hat she's in love with a filthy pikey, then I think a marriage is the best thing possible to sort her out."

Lee trotted into the study and lifted the phone, plopping into a chair before turning it on. The dial tone was not heard, however, and in its place were voices. Ooops... She was about to turn it off before she heard a man's voice mention something about a 'filthy pikey', she couldn't help but listen in.
Mrs. Katan's worries soon passed. Ah, that was what she wanted to hear. What a great guy, that William. "Wonderful news. I couldn't agree with you more. Of course, we'll make plans later. But for now would you like to come meet your future bride?" A smile spread across the woman's face, and her tone had become quite inviting.
Someone's getting married? Lee tilted her head as she listened, falling further into her seat trying to make as little noise as possible.
"I realize this was all on such short notice, but I'm sure Lee would like to see you in person."
Lee's eyes widened. ...What? She must have misunderstood. That wasn't possible. They weren't about to hand their only daughter off to some guy she'd never even met! She quickly hung up the phone and tucked her knees to her chest. This was some kind of joke. It had to be. Was she really going to be given away like that? Oh god... Don't cry. Lee never cried. No Katan did. I wanna talk to Ellandra... She had to choke back her tears as she thought, but honestly, talking to her wasn't going to do anything. That man, whoever he was, would be coming over, right? She'd have to meet him, right? He was the last person she wanted to see right now. Well, aside from her mother, that was.
Okay, okay, this was one of those times where her cell phone was going to come in handy. How many minutes she had left was her lowest concern right now. She bounded back up the stairs and into her bedroom, completely ignoring Lauss when he asked whether or not Rhian was coming over as she dug through her things to find her rarely used cell. She frantically dialed Faolan's number, not caring who picked up at this point.

Faolan was currently wrestling the one of the new mattresses onto the small bed he'd gotten for the bedroom. Getting it in the vardo had been a challenge, but managing to situate it on the bed and get the bed against the wall like he wanted was just downright aggravating.
When his cell phone rang, he dug it out of his back pocket irritably and snarled a "What?" into it, figuring his father was just calling to bother the s**t out of him. "Seriously, this had better be good ol' man, or I'll be personally comin' o'er t'your place t'kick your wrinkly arse."
At the sound of a small gasp on the other end, Fao checked the number and noticed it wasn't Keagan's. He put the phone back to his ear, knowing only one other person that had the number. "Lee?"

"Why yes, Mrs. Katan, I'll be right over," William said, and then looked at his manicurist. "Er, better make that about half an hour, actually. In all honesty I'm starting to wonder if there's some sort of kidnapping ring starting up, with the way poor innocent girls keep getting seduced by those filthy pikey," he said conversationally as he watched the manicurist buff his nails.

"Faolan?" Ellandra asked, coming into the bedroom with Rhian in her arms, and blinked. "Who's calling? Is something wrong?"

Lee sighed with relief when someone picked up. "Hi, F-Faolan. Could I..." she choked a bit on her words. "Could I talk to Ellandra, it's an emergency..." She sounded like she could burst out in tears at any moment.
Mrs. Katan "Oh, that's quite alright, whenever you manage." She couldn't help but stifle a laugh when she heard the way he spoke of the carnival folk. Sure, she hadn't refrained from using the word "pikey", but he seemed to go out of his way to insult them. She couldn't help but think it had less to do with their appeal than his repulsiveness. Aw, that was too mean, wasn't it? All she could mutter was a small "Indeed." Let's not insult future in-laws now, kay? Besides, she didn't call him to chat. "I hate to have to go so quickly, but I should inform Lee before you arrive. I'll be seeing you soon, yes?"

Faolan motioned Ellandra over, still talking to Lee. "What's wrong, lass? Wait, let me put Elle on." He figured it might be a girl thing, holding out the phone to his wife.

Ellandra took the phone from her husband, trying to ignore Rhian's worried pleas of "What is it? What's wrong?" and most frequently, "Is Lauss-teacher okay?" all the while.
"I'm here, Lee, what's the matter?"
~*~
"Of course you need to inform her; yes, yes, I'll be over soon, don't worry, Mrs. Katan - this might be a shock to her right now, but I'm sure she'll understand the reasons for it eventually. A reputation is such a delicate thing. . . as I've found out myself," William said, before saying his good-byes to the woman and hanging up the phone.
"Forrest!" He called to his hairstylist-on-standby. "I need you to make sure my hair's in perfect order. It looks like I've got a new engagement, and it wouldn't do to show up at the lovely lady's home with musses hair."

Lee pressed a palm to her face as she heard Ellandra's voice. "Ellandra... My mother..." She was getting closer and closer to crying. "I think she's gonna make me marry some guy I dun even know." The sobbing started, and so did the rambling. "A-and she was like 'You should meet Lee' and I was too scared. I didn't want to listen to it anymore. And... and I just hung up. And I think he's coming over, Ellandra. He's coming over. I dun wanna meet 'im, Ellandra, I dun wanna." She sounded like a small child, whining like she was with her voice cracking every now and then. Lauss desperately wanted to glide to her side, but instead flopped over and rolled his body to the edge of the bed. "Miss Lee, you're getting married? Is Miss Rhian coming over?" Lee sobbed harder into the phone with Lauss' words. "Ellandra, please come over. I dun wanna do this." Lee's mascara was bleeding, and her eyes were surrounded by black streaks.
Mrs. Katan hung up the phone and did as she said she would do. Her heels clapped on each step as she headed to Lee's bedroom. She tidied her hair as she was about to knock on her daughter's door when she could faintly hear Lee's crying. She sighed. Pushing the door open herself, she looked toward her daughter and cocked her head. "So you already heard... Well, get up, we have to clean you up." No sympathy, sorry. This is for your own good, young lady.

Ellandra gasped, her eyes widening. "Hold on just a little while, Lee, Faolan and I will be thre as soon as we can, we'll help you sort this out, sweetheart, don't worry. Just try to calm down Lee, we'll think of something to fix this-" at more "Hey! Ellandra! Is Lauss okay? Hey! Please? Is he alright? Please? Listen?"s from Rhian, she added, "We'll bring Rhian, give her and Lauss something to do and hopefully keep each other out of trouble. We'll be there as soon as we can, just try to hold on."
With that, she hung up the phone and turned to her husband. "We need to get to Lee's house, quickly. She's just gotten an arranged marriage sprung on her, it's someone she doesn't know and she's scared out of her wits."

"What is it with outsiders and arranged marriages?" Faolan asked, moving to get some get a shirt on and find his boots. Nevermind that he himself was once betrothed to the very woman he'd married. As soon as he was dressed, he was pretty much out the door. "Meet me at the east entrance, Elle. I'll get us a ride to the girl's house."
Zia watched its owner go past and looked at Ellandra. "Should I go to Keagan and tell him what's going on in case there's trouble?"

Lee wiped at her eyes as Ellandra calmed her down. "O-okay... Thank you Ellandra." Her voice was stuffy and cracked, but she managed to say goodbye. Looking up at her mother, Lee wiped her running nose and sulked over to her, hanging up the phones and dropping it on the ground. Even now she didn't have it in her to defy the woman. They headed to the bathroom and Lee's mother took a damp cloth and padded the girl's eyes, clearing up the mascara and revealing severely puffed eyelids. "Oh, Lee..." Mrs. Katan sounded frustrated, though her face looked quite guilty. "Why do you look so sad?" She asked as she straightened her daughter's hair. "He's a wonderful man, I promise. And if it doesn't happen now, it will just happen later. You don't have the luxury of choosing who you marry." Lee couldn't think of anything to say. She just let her mother fix her up, make her pretty for William. "I don't want to be mean, but think about it. Did you honestly think that that pikey you brought over was going to marry you?" The woman finished applying makeup onto her little doll and tugged at her hand, pulling her back into her room and rummaging through her closet.
"Is Miss Rhian coming over, Miss Lee?" Still on that, Lauss? Really? Lee couldn't do anything but nod to him, and Lauss rolled back to the head of the bed where he happily continued his book. "Here." Mrs. Katan held out something a little less childish than what Lee was currently wearing; a black pencil skirt and a nice blouse. Professional clothes. "Meet me downstairs when you're done." It was like she was up for sale or something, trying to make herself look her best so the guy would agree to purchase her. But she did as she was asked, dragging herself into the bathroom again and pulling on her new outfit, and managing to meet back up with her mother in the entrance.
