Faolan led Ellandra along the streets of the district Farstep had set up in, his left hand holding her right so the ribbons about their wrists touched every so often. He'd been excited to get out of the carnival for awhile and could think of no better way to spend his day off than showing his new wife all the places around the district that he liked.
"We're almost there, lass," he told the young woman, pointing up ahead. He was suddenly glad that Ziazan had decided to stay home since it would be hard to really enjoy themselves with constant worry that someone would see the little Essentic.

"Ah, but where is this "there" you're taking me, hmm?" Ellandra asked lightly, though she didn't really expect a straight answer out of her husband. It felt strange to be stepping back into the "normal" world after so long in the miniature world that was Farstep - strange and a bit uncomfortable. She hadn't realized how much she was comforted by the unusual until she'd ventured away from it.
It was only a mild discomfort, though, because she was with Faolan, and that made abasolutely anything bearable. Besides, she was looking forward to whatever it was he had to show her - there was still so much she didn' know about the love of her life, and she wanted to remedy that as soon as possible. Though ther was on thought back at the carnival that worried her a little - or just struck her as strange. "When we left, Faolan, I thought I saw Rags wandering off with Rosco. I hope he doesn't wind up in more trouble than he usually finds himself in . . ."

"Rosco likes cats," Faolan said, giving a slight shrug. "He likes how it freaks patrons out when he just sits around, stroking a cat like he's people."
He stopped before a large and very old church, holding a hand back as if presenting a work of art--which it was in a way with its gothic architecture and brilliantly colored stained glass windows. "Here we are."

"It's beautiful," Ellandra said with a small gasp of wonder. Oh, to be sure, a church wasn't on the top of her expected-destinations list, but the beauty of the structure -for it was beautiful, in the way that all old things have a quality of beauty to them - distracted her from any surprise she felt at being brought here. "It's very ancient," she said softly, respectfully, for the old building inspired the need to be respectful in her. "I wonder just how old it is. . ."

"Three-hundred sixty-four years," Faolan said, going up the steps and opening the door for her to go in. She hadn't really asked him to show her any specific locations, just places he liked to go to. Walking into the church behind his wife, Faolan couldn't think of a better place to start the tour off at.
The interior was dimly lit by scores of candles and the sunlight streaming down through the stained glass of the windows. There was no sound and only a slight scent of the old wood and books.
Faolan nudged Ellandra forward, then moved past her down the aisle to go sit in one of the pews.

"It's beautiful, it really is," Ellandra whispered, trailing hesitantly after Faolan, trying to look everywhere so as not to miss anything. She wasn't sure why she was whispering, there was no-one around, but it just. . . seemed rude to speak loudly here. "Can I ask why we started here...?" she asked quietly, tilting her head a little. She didn't want to upset her husband, but she was curious - why a church, and why this one? There was some reason, if one only understood by Faolan himself, and she wanted to know it as much as she could.

Faolan was quiet a long moment, then shrugged. "My life, it seems, started with a church. I like them. There's a quiet peace here you can't find anywhere else. It's a nice change from Farstep," Faolan replied softly, looking up at the main stained glass window behind the pulpit. He didn't understand the pictures on the windows or any of the other symbols around the church, having been raised in the mostly-made nonsense of what passed for religion around the carnival, but he could appreciate the skill and love it must have taken for someone to go through the trouble of making the windows.
He moved his hand along the pew cushion and found Elle's hand, intertwining their fingers. "When you were a little girl, did you ever like to have some quiet place that you were sure no one would ever think to look for you in? Farstep has its own religion--or group of relgions, really--so no one there would ever believe their boss' son likes to spend time in churches. I get to be left alone here. It's a good place to think. Sometimes the people here--priests, I think they're called--they talk with me and help me sort stuff out."

Ellandra squeezed Faolan's hand and sighed a little. "My entire world was quiet," she said softly, taking a seat next to her husband on the pew. "But. . . I would go to the master bedroom a lot; there were three bedrooms in our house; two smaller ones that Papa and I used, and the master bedroom; he refused to go near it; kept it locked and everything. . . but I knew where he hid the key," and her eyes sparkled like she was confessing some horribly naughty thing she'd done. "He must have left it untouched from when my mother died, because it was always dusty. . . but he never bothered me there; I think he was afraid to go in."
The brunette paused for a minute and glanced around, taking in the peaceful atmosphere of this place and feeling comforted by it. "I didn't use it as a place to think; I did that enough without going anywhere. . . it was something of a treasure-chamber instead. I found a flute in there once. . . I suppose it was my mother's. Papa never did find out why I'd all of a sudden wanted to take lessons."

Faolan moved his hand from Elle's so his arm rested on the back of the pew and looked at her. "Do you still play? I'd love to hear that." He looked back up at the main window again, tilting his head at the woman depicted there. "At least you had some sort of connection to your mother and knew what she looked like. I don't even have that. Just an old blanket they found me bundled in and the ring--" He pointed to the ring he'd given Ellanda with the red gemstone. "--that they found tied to the blanket. I don't really even know if it was my mother or father that left me, but I like to think it was her, that she wanted to hold me one last time before she left me at that church. Just wish I knew why."

"A bit," Ellandra said, blushing slightly.Then she looked down, inspecting the ring she now wore - the ring that had possibly belonged to a mother-in-law of sorts that she'd never known. "Have you ever. . ." she started to say, then trailed off and paused for a moment, lifting her gaze to meet Faolan's golden eyes. "Have you thought about having Ziazan look at it? The little one would be able to find out something, I'm sure. . ."

The young man shook his head. "I've never asked or thought about asking Zia to examine it. I'm not so curious about my past as that, just think about it sometimes. I'm sure Zia probably has already done a reading and just keeps it to itself. You can ask it sometime if you want to know."

Ellandra smiled and hugged Faolan, not caring that this was probably on the improper side in a church. "Why would I need to do that? I have you now, that's what matters." She paused a moment and thought. "You know. . . we might never have met if you weren't raised at Farstep," she said slowly, finding the statement oddly painful to say, despite its speculative nature.

Faolan smiled down at her. "We'd have found each other no matter where I was, wife. Soulmates, remember?" He got a slightly faraway look briefly as if thinking something over, then shook his head and stood up. "There's some more places I want to show you."

Ellandra stoof as well, keeping her grip on Faolan's hand. "All right," she said simply, inwardly wondering if they really would have met regardless. . . somehow, she didn't quite think so, and her grip on her husband's hand tightened along with that thought. "What kind of places?" She asked lightly, trying to bring her focus back on things that really mattered - the here and now rather than the what ifs and whens.
