She is always prepared with a ritual or a prayer to help purify anything necessary, especially the air and water surrounding them, or the earth beneath their feet. She does not like being touched, or looked at for very long, nor will she meet the gaze of a passerby for longer than is absolutely necessary. She is meek, humble, and completely unprepared for what lies ahead of her. [Morgana's Curse] Percival's weapon had her in a deep, unforgiving sleep. She couldn't wake up even if she wanted to - and oh, how she wanted to. The skin still kissed with the mark of Morgana's curse burned, and her nails grazed against it thoughtlessly as she dreamed. No, not dreamed. She would beg for dreams. Morgana gave her unending nightmares, and Percival's staff stole away her only chance at escaping by waking up. She was trapped in her own nightmares for a very, very long time. Where was the light? Her eyes stung as if sunlight burned them, but she could see nothing. She felt blind, and yet she knew somehow she could see where she was going, even if there was nothing to mark the way. She walked into the searing darkness, until color finally blossomed in front of her. It was no less dark than the rest of their surroundings, and yet she could imagine it to be some shade of violet and grey, surrounded by a blue glow. It was a creature she never would have recognized, except that in dreams, one always knew.
It was herself.
Long, lean arms of purple were tipped with claws that looked more birdlike than human. Her body was sinews of muscle, constantly tensing and pulsing as if waiting to strike at any moment. In the center of her unnecessarily voluptuous chest was a hole that went right through her body, a cavity that spoke of loss and otherworldy intentions. Nothing alive should have a hole like that through it, Riley though.
Nothing alive does.
She heard the voice like thoughts in her own head, and assumed them to be her own because they held a similar cadence, if not tone. It was difficult to focus on her face in the dream, because there was so much missing that she refused to process it. Where was it's nose, it's mouth, or the color in it's eyes? It burned to stare at, so groteque and out of place as it was. She heard laughter, but couldn't place where it was coming from. It sounded like an echo of her laughter in the treasure room. Perhaps that was all it was.
It was dark enough to ignore until that moment that her hair wasn't hair at all - she only realized there was something alive on top of it's head when it slithered, and began to reach out for her like monstrous arms, wrapping around her body and neck and pulling her closer until she couldn't ignore it anymore - and she had to, she had to ignore it because it would kill her if she came any closer. She knew this, because this wasn't the first time she'd ever seen it. Her. The creature was a female and it had killed before -
And yet, here you still stand, you freakish insect. The voice in her head seethed, writhing uncontrollably with an anger that Riley thought was somehow palpable despite only being a thought, a sound, a concept.
How many times am I going to have to kill you before you are truly gone? The creature asked Riley, as it pulled her closer. She saw now, in those white, glowing eyes, something hiding behind all of the hatred. She saw past the destruction, and death, and bloodlust, to something she was never meant to see.
Fear.
I am not afraid of you. The creature spat out into her head, and Riley knew it to be a lie. Just before it snapped her neck with it's long, winding tentacles, Riley realized she wasn't in danger at all.
It was scared of her.She woke up with a start, screaming up into the air for ten full seconds, before her voice cracked and she fell back into her bed, soaked in sweat - but free. Alive, and free. And somehow, even more troubled than before.
