Sammy stumbled down the halls between the ramparts and the staging room. She'd been on her way to get a bit of supplies, food even, to take back to the wall during all the chaos. For every knight that stepped away, another jumped into their place. For each that died, another stepped forward to slay the killer.
How long could it last though?
Her sword clicked along the ground as she dragged it at her side before finally stopping to sheath it, ruffling her cloak and armor as she did so. It was quiet in here, minus the sounds of chaos muffled outside, almost peaceful given everything else.

Beast after beast had come crashing down at the head of her gnarled staff. Riley's dress was in tatters, with burns and rips and tears - but so much of it was no longer visible under the chain mail, and her dignity was hidden well by the leggings she'd put on. In truth, she looked like a completely different woman. And she felt like one, too. When she saw her friend from the banquet hall ahead of her, her expression quirked with a contentful joy. "Sammy." Riley called out, waving one hand at her weakly. It was then that she noticed her hands, and arms, and the rest of her - were smeared with the grime of dead shadow creatures, and she felt an immense regret at how dirty she must have looked. If she'd noticed before saying something, she would have run in the other direction until she could find a bath. But it was too late, now.

She was staring out the window when Riley arrived, the flicker of flames and darkness beyond the walls where a blue sky once stood watch.
Sammy's own blue cloak wasn't in the best of shape, some of the darkness had lashed out on the ramparts and she had taken her own licks and paid them out in turn during that time. Her gaze shifted at the soudn of her name cocking slightly before her eyes went wide.
"Riley?"
The chance to run was long gone. Sammy was already standing before her tilting her head at the tattered dress and gore. "I... you look like you've been busy." A small smile cracked the features of her face, "Please tell me that's their blood and not yours?"

"Busy is one way to put it." She chuckled out faintly, closing the distance between them until she was close enough to converse, without being too close. She looked down at the smears against her skin again, and assured her with a long, relieved nod. "Any ails I had are long since mended from my time at the shelter. I don't know whether I can say I did more good there, than out on the battlefield. I want to have done more good at the shelter, but - " There was no denying she'd found a knack for hacking away at monsters, even if she didn't enjoy it. "I'm helping, one way or another. That's all that matters, I suppose." She used one of her sleeves to try and brush away the grime on her arm. "How are you faring? Well I hope?"

: "No I'm pretty sure that's the best way to put it dear," the distance closed and Sammy was better able to see the damage, sure enough the damage was not Riley, but whatever poor creature had ran into said knight. "It doesn't matter where you did good, I've been throwing barrels of good ale and wine. A wagon barrel, and lord knows how many chickens off a wall at a bridge. If it stops the Shadows from getting in then it was good. If it saved a life, spared a life suffering, it was good."
The shorter knight reached up to Riley's shoulder clasping it with a shake. "Exactly, helping is all that matters," she said grinning wearily as they spoke. Even as the other tried to clean her arm Sammy moved to the window letting her go.
"Well. I'm doing okay. Like I said throwing things over a wall to break a bridge has been... interesting?" She held up a hand like she had something by the neck. "I swear I had a chicken just like this, I'm running at the wall I mean a chicken, why are there so many? I was going to toss it onto the pile where they where pecking about knocking things down and making a mess. A good mess!"
She swiped with her other hand like a wild beast and then threw both hands in the air like tossing feathers in the wind.
"Poof. No chicken. Those ******** shadows ripped it out of my hands and ate it!" Her hands shot straight up, "They stole my ******** chicken! Ate it! I didn't even get a bite! Hell I didn't get any wine or Ale!" She let out a burst of laughter, "I sound like I've gone ******** mad don't I?"
She might have. She swore she saw one girl running to and from the wall with an army of chickens marching with her like it was a parade.

Riley listened, smiling peacefully as Sammy told her what work she'd done, but then she saw the hand coming for her shoulder, and her entire body tensed in fright. She forced herself not to cringe, now determined to be able to work through her phobia of touch after having dealt with the sick so much. Slowly, she relaxed her muscles, but it was when Sammy released her that she let out an audible sigh of relief. Old habits died hard. Sammy's storytelling had it's own unique flair. Riley giggled when she exclaimed about the unusual number of chickens, and then grimaced at the idea of a shadow monster eating it. Though, that wasn't all she grimaced about. She waited until Sammy was done with her story, which was a very good one, except for one feature. " Language, dear." Riley whispered, her lips tensing in a tight, amused smile. "I rather enjoyed your story, and would have enjoyed it just as much without the obscenities."

Sammy didn't notice the grimace, she was too wrapped up in her tales of chicken based chaos to notice it, even missing the sigh from Riley as she finally let her go free. Clearly Sammy wasn't the best at subtle tells.
"Really I think we have a chicken infestation, I mean, this could be good? We might need food if we make it through the siege. No, we will need food." She paused, "Maybe the darkness wanted to kill the chickens to deprive us of food?" The thought was very long shot and a bit obscure.
Finally she was scolded for her language, granted politely, "Oh c'mon you heard what Morgan called us female knights. If a great knight can speak like that I find talking about shadows and chickens to be the least offensive form of those words one could muster...." There was a very big pout from the little blue knight at this.

"We must strive to be better." She responded, setting one finger to her lips in an amused gesture. "Always." Her hand dropped back down under her sleeve, and her expression dimmed with shyness. "Besides. The sound of profanity discomforts me. I know you would not wish that. You are a good, kind woman." Riley believed that firmly, despite the sound of profanities tumbling freely from Sammy's mouth.

"And we will become our best in the darkest hours." Her own smile broke through as they spoke.
The talk of what bothered Riley softened the look on the smaller knights face. "Sorry. I feel.... I feel I am better then that. Maybe I was meant to be? Maybe I wasn't?" She held a hand wide pulling her cloak aside showing her sword on her hip. "I doubt I was very much good at being a lady before a knight."
