It wasn't difficult to slip away once the revelry of the banquet hall became too much for her. She excused herself with a dozen apologies to the kind gentleman who'd been keeping her company, but she knew it was better to distance herself and begin the good work laid out for them. At least a quest to simply find something was easy enough for her to handle on her own. She had her walking stick for rough terrain, and a satchel attached to Jericho filled with food in case the journey ran long. What more could she ask for?

Perhaps she had spoken too soon when she told herself that a simple quest to find a relic was easy enough on her own. She was no match for the wilds, and when she found herself stranded on a mountain, pinned into a corner by a rabid wolf, with nothing more than a stick to fend him off with, she lamented her poor choices. Her gown proved as helpful as paper at protecting her from the claws and teeth that bore into her when it attacked. Her horse was the only reason she'd managed to survive, once it whinnied and kicked enough to chase the wolf away. Unfortunately, her dress had taken a major loss, torn and ripped until she looked like a beggar. It took her quite a few minutes to tear the edges until she felt like the skirt was suitable again, though it did nothing to cover her modesty when it came to her legs. She no longer regretted the choice to come alone. She would not be able to continue, had anyone been around to see her now. A quick stop to rest was in order. She laid out the scraps of cloth she'd torn away from her dress, and used it as a shield from the lush green foliage at her feet. She sat upon it and unraveled the satchel, pulling out a piece of bread and cheese. Her first meal today, and she finally felt the pangs of hunger begin to awaken her stomach. Perhaps all that fighting had done the trick. She made it three bites in before a spider the size of her horse's head dropped down from the trees, and landed on her bread. She screamed, throwing the entire thing as far from her as possible, before hastily wrapping everything up and mounting her horse again. Breaktime was over. The quest itself was teaching her things about herself that she'd already suspected, but had no proof to bear. She'd begun to feel a bone deep exhaustion, which informed her that she was no rider, and no fighter. Her hands were already red with holding the stick, and the horse reins. But when she looked at her feet, she found a surprising lack of wear - underneath the slippers she wore, her heels were calloused and strong. They had borne a weight she would never have considered, and she wondered at what she'd done in her life to have achieved it. Was she a runner? No, her stamina was lacking. She could only guess that she carried things often. Strange. She took to walking, then. When she stepped on the ground that moved at her weight, she stopped to inspect it. The vines behind her began to slither, coming closer until it was clear they weren't vines at all. They were snakes, and they were advancing on her at a deadly rate. She began to sprint, running as fast as she could despite the many stumbles and falls the terrain had waiting for her. STEP THREE Quote: Rolling a 3: You accidentally step on a booby trap as snakes start chasing you! Why did it have to be snakes... -10 damage QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 28 YOUR HP: 10

Tired, worn, and thoroughly beaten, Riley clumsily scaled the summit just enough to obtain the artifact waiting for her. Without meaning to, it was exactly what she needed to survive. Pants.
