He winced as he plopped down in his beanbag chair. Dawson had hoped it might he easier on his bruises than his pillow and blanket-covered spring mattress, but it didn’t seem to matter: his body definitely felt like it was on fire after the spar with Ace, his ribs in particularly flaring up. The infirmary visit had been short—nothing had been pierced after all, which he was told was a nice change in a way that made him laugh nervously at what the poor techs had seen that day—but he had required some bandages just to help nudge the healing along. They felt a little itchy to him, and he had to curb the impulse not to pick at them on the walk back.

Too late. His hand was already deep into the jar of cheese puffs. His weapon sighed. Food never seemed out of reach no matter where someone sat in the trainee's room. Better than bandages, better than stitches, better than any other medicine in the world besides laughter and affection, was food. He lamented he didn’t have ice cream at the moment; something cold would have been preferable to dealing with the messy coat on his fingers before he got to work. But it wasn’t like he didn’t enjoy scraping the tasty dust cluttered there in either, the bonus to eating his favored snacks. The only real issue was not causing a mess; sometimes Dawson just didn’t give a s**t and let things pile up, but today he didn’t want to make one.
Licking his lips, Dawson forced himself up and gathered his resources. He was aching bad and probably should have just been sitting and reading, but sitting still wasn’t in his list of skills. He was a constantly tapping his foot, fiddling with a pocket, fixing his cap, scratching his chin, nibbling his cheek, humming to himself, shifting weight from foot to foot, gum smacking, arm patting, neck rubbing sort of guy. The very idea of having to flop down and busy himself with something as simple as reading seemed to pale in comparison with what he could be doing.
He found Claude’s leather bracelet and held it up with a warm smile. The gesture had surprised him; Captain wasn’t someone who struck him as a terribly generous person, not if she was a real pirate. The gift inspired him to pick up his crafts again. He had never been particularly good in the past, but he had also had a certain level of expectation that he wasn’t very good at, well, much of anything worth making up until the past year. Now that he had gotten the reindeer statuettes made, however, he felt more confident.
E-6000 glue. Beads. Colored string. Jumprings. Glitter bottle. Various studs. (He counted them off in singsong: domes, flats, spikes, pyramids, baguettes, honhonhon.) Needle nose pliers and nylon jaw pliers. Ribbons of God only knew how many textures and patterns. Scissors of several different sizes. Fabric he couldn’t remember the reasons why he had for some and fond memories for others. Brushes, cup, and a second hand painting board that still bore previous projects’ fingerprints. Charms he had grabbed along with several other things on his list the last time he had used his leave, when he had restricted himself to a set budget and used what was left of it to buy himself s**t from Burger King. Leather. (He snickered to himself: leather in the dungeon room bahahaha.) So, so many leather strips, wide, thin, long, ragged, stained with coffee or alcohol or some other drink he couldn’t tell, new, old, frayed at the ends, punctured like a belt, dark and light. He was ready.
Dawson made a mental list as he worked, rearranging them based on division: Abbi, Chris, America (almost adding Taym and then deciding it probably wasn’t a good idea), Maebe, Dylon, Chance, Claude, Ace, Horace, Hattie…he debated Chel’s not just because of his own wounded pride over the affair still (a fact that irritated Syntyche and that she was quite vocal about in her myriad of animal voices), but because he wondered if it would look pathetic or not.
(Later he would add Kostya and Thomas to the list: one for being welcoming and offering him extra work, the other as a deep apology for nearly letting him die that one time sorry sorry.)
The list was longer than he had imagined, and he felt a swell of warmth in his chest the more he thought about it. A bracelet was childish, sure, but the motion hopefully would mean more than the sum of its parts.
Hands aching and bruises protesting, he stopped partway into his work and decided he could start delivering some of them so they wouldn’t get cluttered or lost in his sometimes messy room. Grabbing Maebe’s, he pushed to his feet with a grunt, checked that the battery lamp was still good on juice, and wandered out of the basement to deliver his surprise present. His body felt heavy with every movement.
