One of these days Arorangi would manage to do well enough that he wouldn't need to practice on a test dummy; but seeing as how he was still a little unsteady on his feet when it came to using his staff, it wasn't all that bad of an idea to make use of one while he had the opportunity to.
Out on the field, dressed in a brightly colored orange teeshirt shirt and a pair of khaki shorts, along with his flip flops, Arorangi spun the spear around this way and that, attempting to show at least some semblance of knowledge when it came to actual fighting.
It was too bad that practicing on an immobile, straw mannequin was relatively useless, but at least he was getting the movements in.

He was starting, at least slowly, to appreciate the little high that came with exercise. God forbid Chris ever found out, but Dawson was beginning to understand why he might get addicted, or why Horace or Maebe liked the pain: it was a good distraction to surrender to. And given that he was still trying to put the world in perspective again after recent knowledge gaining, Dawson welcomed any and all distractions. It also hopefully meant more calories would be burned. His weight was starting to become a point of guilt, even though he purposefully bought more than enough snacks and chowed down whenever he could. The cycle just kept going and going. Wincing with every other step that his body protested, Dawson forced himself to march onto the training fields. While he probably should have been resting, Syn reminded him: true hunters didn't rest, only prey did. And making himself train helped cut down on the niggling sense that the chimera was still annoyed with him about his doormat disposition. Only vaguely aware of his surroundings at first, Dawson settled on the first available dummy and was about to swing at it when he realized he had a neighbor. Blinking out of his reverie, he turned and— "Oh! Hey, uh..." s**t what was Mountain Man's name again?? "Heyyyyy. M'not in yer way, am I?"

In the middle of swinging his staff around a little unceremoniously, Arorangi heard a semi-familiar voice that made him turn around, the spear still flying wildly. Thankfully, however, he still had enough control over it that made it easy for him to pull it back before it actually hit the poor unsuspecting soul that was now standing beside him.
"Dawson!" said Arorangi brightly, poking the end of his spear into the ground and reaching out to clap a large, tattooed hand on the other man's shoulder. He gave it a friendly squeeze and then dropped his arm away, smiling cheerfully.
"You are not in my way, my good man, are you here practicing? Would you like to spar together?"

He gulped and might have lost a few shades of color at the close call, uttering a shaky laugh as his shoulder was clasped. "I-I'm alrigh'!" Dawson replied. "I was just tryin' t'fit in some more fitness stuff, y'know..." No but really what was his name again? Maybe he should walk away. That spear looked awful pointy.
< I will never let you have a moment's peace if you do. >
Yessum.
"I'd be happy t'spar ya, if ya don' mind me lookin' a fool, heh." On the inside, Dawson whined and braced for new bruises as he raised his shield.

There was obvious hesitation in his stance as he let Arorangi get ready. How did he approach a spear exactly? It was good for stabbing and whacking. The guy hadn't seemed like an expert with it, which was a nice assurance, but a weapon was a weapon, and his body aches even before they started dealing blows. Pulling his cap backwards, Dawson braced for impact and rushed at the other trainee. Apparently the best way to see how to deal with a spear was to approach it head on. Hp: 40 Damage: 4

"I do not think you look like a fool!" said Arorangi in astonishment, looking rather horrified at the very prospect of possibly insulting another human being. "On the contrary, my friend, you have a great deal of sense about you, and your shield is very impressive! I am not sure I would be able to wield it myself!"
He took a step back and flipped the spear so that his left hand was lower than his right, making it easier to balance. Dawson had already rushed towards him, and Arorangi hastily attempted to sidestep, the shield brushing over his arm and sending him skidding a few steps.
"See?" he said brightly, dreadlocks swishing around his shoulders. "Very impressive!"
Arorangi twisted, attempting to get the spear into place, and rushed at the other.
"So, tell me how have you been?" he asked cheerfully. "It has been a while!"

By this point in his training Dawson at least remembered how best to manage his weight and not immediately fall over when he turned. It was half instincts and half a knee jerk reaction that he lifted his shield in time to deflect the spear.
"Y-Yeah, uh...sawry 'bout that, big guy," he replied sheepishly, moving past Arorangi's weapon for another quick bash. "Got kinda swept up in some stuff. How you been doin'?"

Arorangi flipped the spear again, from one hand to the other, and poked it at Dawson.
"I have been doing very well!" he said brightly. "I went on a long mission, and then I came back and now I am just hanging in there! I have been trying to work up to becoming an Intermediate, since I believe it is time for a promotion, though admittedly it is taking some time!"

Cringing, he backed off and adjusted the position of his shield. Apparently he was used to getting shot at, just not quite at getting stabbed at. "I feel ya, man," Dawson said with a laughing breath. "Been here a long while n' I'm still a trainee. What kinda long mission they threw you on?" Hp: 36 Damage: nope

"Some place in the mountains!" said Arorangi brightly. "I did not have mobile phone service over there, which was quite frustrating, but I learned that it is important to always keep on your toes! How long have you been here? I think for me it has been about eight or nine months by now!"
He let out a low whistle, thrusting the spear forward. "Sometimes I cannot believe it is so long!"

"You n' me about the same then, heh. Got here back in September." As Arorangi pricked his shield, he knocked it back to continue backpedaling, trying to strike a balance between his short range weapon and his opponent's with reach. At least the guy's good cheer was catching. Dawson was starting to forget why he had ever been nervous about the guy. "Mountains'd be a nice change a'scenery, yeah?" he said with a smile. "Least you got out okay. I hear they sometimes send people t'places like the arctic fer God knows how long, I bet it's hell in the winter." Hp: 35 Damage: 1

"I was here back in June, so I have been here long enough!" said Arorangi cheerfully, and would have clapped a hand on Dawson's shoulder, were they not in the middle of a spar. "I think that we should both be aiming towards intermediate, then, you are clearly very good at defending yourself with this shield of yours, I can say!"
He tried to jab Dawson with the tip of his spear, pleased to see that Dawson looked as though he was relaxing a little bit. "I am much better suited towards mountains and warmth than cold, New Zealand is full of mountains!"

Defending maybe, heavy hits not to much. They were chipping away at each other, and while Dawson appreciate not getting thrown on his a** for once, he sort of missed sparring people like Claude and Chance and Chris who could drive him even harder thanks to the imbalance of power. < Now that is the sort of thinking I like. >"Heh, one step atta time, yeah?" Or one swing in this case. "New Zealand, that's iiiiin Australia?" Dawson guessed. "Or s'that Iceland? Wait, no, Iceland's like up north in Canada...Or is that Greenland...Anyway, I was kinda wonderin' where that accent was from!" hp: 32 damage: 3

"Not in Australia, but near!" answered Arorangi brightly, excited to talk about his own home country. "It is an island in the ocean, it is a beautiful place, full of mountains and sheep and green grass - it is where the Lord of the Rings movies were filmed, if you have seen those!" he added, eyes twinkling with mischief.
"And yes," Arorangi added, leaping and jabbing at Dawson all at once. "That is where my accent and my name is from! That is why my full name is Arorangi Arapeta Te Ariki! It is a mouthful, but I wanted to keep it as a reminder of my heritage, even after I moved to the states!"
His swing was harder than before, bolstered by Arorangi's enthusiasm for sharing.

Ow ow ow.
"Duuuuuude, that's awesome!" he chirped as he hid behind his shield rather than attempt to outrun Arorangi anymore. More importantly, Dawson finally had the guy's name. Sort of. That really was a mouthful. "What gotcha movin' to the states, bruh? New Z sounds like a real paradise t'me."
