Maintenance of weapon golems wasn't exactly top priority at the moment, but Dawson and Maebe had secured test slots nonetheless. On his part, he was nervous more than eager: Thaw was fine company as far as he could tell. Leaving Maebe with Syntyche, however...Well. He had promised. And Dawson was a man of his word.

Chimera described more than the shield's species. The moment Syn was able to move out of the pod, she was a mixture of many things, Physically, sturdy cloven hooves planted each step with confidence as she strode forward, a mindless yet sentient serpentine creature leered from behind her bulky body, and her eyes were like bright amber stones some beast had carved their claws into. But though Syn had the mane of a lion and horns any male goat would be envious of, she spoke in a feminine rasp, and she moved with the ease of a much lighter predator. Unlike Dawson, she wasn't just any singular thing at any singular time: the smile she gave to him was the same smile she gave to Maebe, but they meant very different things.

This was a creature that had the capacity to understand Maebe far better than Dawson ever would. Both understood a language he didn't know the name of.

"Pleased to see you in person," Syn said with that pleasant hint of teeth.

Maebe didn't know what Syn looked like, so as the golem took her shape, there was a hint of awe in her expression. It was the strength behind femininity that caught her attention, and she was a little impressed by the many varied features a chimera could possess.

Of course, when Thaw took his golem and the sheer size of him overwhelmed the machine as usual, she remembered that these weapons had to be impressive, to have survived the process they went through. Weaklings never made it.

She gave Syn a very, very wide smile.

"The pleasure is all mine. May I introduce you to my partner before we send the boys off to be boys? Thaw, this is Syn. Syn, Thaw."

The balrog had barely managed to wrench himself away from the machinery he'd all but gotten his giant body stuck in just by forming there. He gave his 'partner' a look, as if to say, some warning would have been nice.

"Charmed, Lady Syn."

Dawson laughed and almost moved to help Thaw out, but the demon managed. This was his first time actually seeing the balrog in person, and he couldn't help but have a small nergasm. He was just so cool looking.

"Lady!" Syn chuckled, and it sounded like how sandpaper felt. "That titles goes to the ghoul, doesn't it? I wouldn't want to take anything of hers."

Dawson, feeling a vague sense of hostility in those words, tried to quickly move them on. "Duuuuuuude, I didn't realize how big you were!" he said with awe, grinning boyishly. "I mean, a'course yer big, balrogs are, like, huge, but--Dude!" He made vague gestures to convey his glee before looking to Syn. "Promise me you'll play nice."

He wouldn't, couldn't really, ask Maebe to. But he could try his partner.

"Gentle as a lamb," the chimera purred.

Thaw couldn't understand why Dawson seemed to be so impressed with his size, since he was clearly a superior human when it came to size himself. He bowed his head in respect, careful not to get his horns anywhere near the man.

Neither could he understand why Syn would not be interested in taking on the title of Lady along with the child, though he recalled Maebe saying something similar quite often when he tried to call Maebe by the honorific. Women were.. cryptic.

It's the only blessing of being a weapon - never having to worry about that sort of thing, ever again.

Maebe looked strangely intoxicated with the way Syn talked. There was something sinister in it, like she could never quite tell if the chimera was going to hug her, or slit her throat. It instantly endeared her to Maebe, though she was smart enough not to say as such.

"Okay, boys." Maebe huffed out. "Take a hike. It's girl's night out."

"Alright, alright," Dawson said, trying to calm down. "Jus' text me when y'all're headin' back, okay? N' stay inside. I got money, but that don' mean I wanna blow it on a broken golem." With that, he moved along with Thaw, attempting to get on his tiptoes and sling the balrog into a noogie--away from the horns, of course.

"A shame." Syn looked out the nearest window at the stormy weather. In the distance, a large mass of something watery was being attacked by a group of hunters. Her mane bristled. "I wanted to prowl outside. Oh well."

She turned back to Maebe and stepped closer. "Shall we?"

Maebe felt Dawson's presence slip away, and for a moment - just one moment - she looked a little lost.

Then Syn spoke, and her expression lifted to its natural apathy, tinged with a polite little smile. "Sorry to disappoint. I'd offer to take you out anyway, but I don't want to disappoint him, too. Maybe next time?"

As Dawson and Thaw left, Thaw seemed perfectly capable of simply not reacting to the fact that the man was trying to sling his head. Dawson's efforts went mostly ignored, though Thaw did look a little worried that there was something on his head Dawson sought after. He patted it a few times, before leaving.

"I'd like that."

The serpent tail swung away from watching the boys go to gaze at Maebe.

"I suppose this isn't so bad," she said. "Here we can get comfortable. Dissect one another." Syn smiled again, this time with no teeth. "I've wanted to get a good look at you for some time now. Dawson, sweet boil that he is, doesn't ask the right questions. He lacks the claws to dig in."

"He lacks claws, in general. Probably why I love him so much - I've been scratched enough." She led Syn forward, taking charge of their walk as they headed for a private lounge. "I'm glad you do, though. Someone has to."

Her heels clacked against the floor, and for once it wasn't the only thing making noise. She could hear Syn behind her, and that was a strange comfort.

"What are the right questions, Syn?"

"On the contrary: I think you've been scratching him plenty."

It was hard to tell if she was talking about the memories as horsemen or the memories as hunters, or both; either way, she sounded terribly amused. Syn followed casually a few steps after her, her eyes on nothing else but the ghoul. The laboratory's atmosphere didn't interest her.

"The right questions are the ones that tell me what you are," she replied. "Dear Dawson, he only cares about the who of it. We've had many arguments. I tell him it's a clone; he tells me she's a person. I tell him you're trouble; he tells me you're in trouble and need help."

"Then you're right." She answered, nodding sagely. "About all things. She was a clone. And I am trouble. I wouldn't fault you for recognizing it."

She stopped at the lounge, and opened the door. She held it out for Syn, waving her inside. "Nice and private. Just us girls."

"The blind could see it," she said dismissively.

Ducking into the room, Syn took a seat towards one side of the couch and crossed her legs. Like an affectionate pet, her tail leered over her shoulder at Maebe before resting on it.

"So." The toothy smile was back. "I'm glad you didn't run from this, Maebe Grace." Her name sounded different in the chimera's mouth, a mockery of Dawson's affect. "I almost wondered if you would after his spectacle earlier. You like running."

Maebe paused, that careful smile on her face freezing for a moment. She hadn't expected Dawson's weapon to be quite so perceptive. She shook it off quickly, sitting down across from the chimera and crossing her own legs. Her hands folded over her knee, as if she was being casually interviewed for a job.

In a way, she guessed she was.

"I thought about it. I'd be very mad at myself right now, if I'd given in to that urge. So, um."

She bit her lip.

"You're glad I didn't run? Does this mean you actually want me around?"

"No."

Syn was still smiling, but it didn't reach her ram's eyes. There was something fundamentally wrong with seeing sharp teeth under them.

"You're only the latest in a string of bad decisions he's inviting into his life," she continued. "Every spook who's kissed him has hurt broken his heart in one way or another. You won't be any different. If anything, you may be worse."

She wouldn't stop staring at Maebe, still as any predator would be.

"I would have stopped this if he had let me out sooner."

This time, she didn't bother to hide her disappointment.

"I'd be inclined to agree with you, but this time, I refuse. I may be trouble, but not for Dawson." She worried at the cushion beside her with sharp nails. "Never for Dawson."

She could be better, for him.

Syn would see.

Syn let out a harsh, bleating roar. "You were causing him trouble long before he gave himself to you, Maebe Grace." There was an extra hiss in her name, a hint of a flickering, forked tongue. "You won't stop. He might believe you've changed, but I don't."

When had the chimera scooter closer?

"You look like prey to me," she said. The smile had angled just enough to become a snarl instead. "A stray that should have been killed. When you ran that night, the chase thrilled us both. He saw you and thought, 'She has teeth and claws still. She can find her place in the world.' I would have ripped you to shreds. You aren't ready for him, ghoul."

The pause was charged, like Syn was angling to strike. But her voice returned to something akin to a purr—no, more of a sibilant whisper.

"He would have married you right then and there had he not asked for my opinion."
