Sun Hunter
SHADOW RUN

General Information
The Shadow Run is both the simplest and most dangerous training course that can be run without a golem. A flurry of continuous attacks is what the Sun Division holds in highest respect, and the course reflects that. The course itself is a simple tunnel, reached via portal. Within the tunnel await hundreds of weak, hungry shadowlings. Nothing to worry about on their own, but capable of overwhelming a Hunter through sheer numbers at the first moment of weakness. At the other end of the tunnel is another portal, leading back to the course observation booth.

If you fail: your character is KO'd, but there's always a senior hunter in the observation booth with enhanced bandages at the ready. They should reach you in time. Really. Trained and trusty professionals on-hand 24/7.

If you win: peen points and bragging rights to those who take out the greatest number of shadowlings and go the most turns without needing to attempt a recovery maneuver.

    Mechanics
  • You must get through 5 waves of attacks to make it through the tunnel.
  • Simply roll for attack as you would in battle.
  • If you miss, your character falters in their attacking and is overwhelmed by shadowlings.
  • After 3 successful hits, you may use your weapon's charge attack.

    Bonus Mechanics
  • This bonus is consumable.
  • The bonus in this course is in the form of "recoveries" ~ these are would-be missed attacks that are quickly recovered and turned into a successful hit. Basically, they can miss once and roll again for an extra try. If you keep consecutively missing, though, and run out of recoveries, it's lights out. These do not equal an automatic pass for a round, you still have to land a successful hit to proceed.

  • Trainees: 0 recovery
  • Sun Trainees: 1 recovery

Okay, to Stop Sucking, one had to at least try stretching beyond his own limitations. Dawson hadn't attempted a training course since he worked up the nerve to contact Taym and show himself up saving the Princess Golem from shadows, but now it was high time he worked on his less than great record of landing hits on things. Moons were about defense, but sometimes the best defense was a good offense. And maybe having a partner would make braving the course easier.

Or worse. His track record with women tended to veer around a little unpredictably.

Tugging at his cap (a shark this time for good luck), Dawson arrived at the appointed time and looked around for someone who matched the lady's twitter pic. In his head, Syntyche positively vibrated at the chance to eat shadows at her pleasure.

Run a little behind, Gretchen had to jog to make up for it, she came hurrying up to the Moon with a shouted apology and a bright grin, and it was impossible to tell beneath the cover of normal jeans that she was moving around with the aid of a prosthetic. Years of use had made her gait as smooth and natural as anyone else's.

"Sorry!" She said it again as she came to a stop beside him. "Hi! You're Dawson?" Looked like him, based on his picture. "I'm Gretchen, it's nice to meet you. I like your hat." There were times when she got overly chatty, usually when she was excited about something. Like now.

"I've never done this, well, any training course.". There was a sheepish chuckle at that. "I'm assuming this ones combat related, since, well. Sun run."

Hat selection was a success. He tipped it in thanks with a bright smile. "Yup, real slim shady here! Nice t'meetcha, Gretchen," he greeted her with a handshake. Okay, she was just as nervous as he was. He could work with that.

"I only did the Moon one, so I ain' the best judge a'how hard this'll be. This one's just straight up makin' our way through to the other side, though," Dawson explained. "So if ya got instincts ta attack stuff, you'll be fine!" Hopefully. "Techs'll leap in t'save our keesters if we get roasted anyhow. Shadows aren't a real big deal normally, there's just, y'know, a lotta 'em in there...Least I hear they go down pretty fast?"

Gretchen grinned, maybe a little too widely. "Would the real Slim Shady please stand up?" Awful, just awful. She took that offered hand and gave it an enthusiastic shake.

As explained what they would be doing she turned her head to take in the entrance to the training course, features melting into something cautiously curious. "So, just make it to the other side, that seems simple enough." She doubted it'd be easy, not if there were techs on standby ready to jump in at a moments notice, but at least the mechanics seemed simple enough.

Taking a step back, Gretchen summoned Devika to her hands, giving the staff an easy spin before turning to face the door. "Well, I'm ready if you are?"

He felt a pang of weapon envy just before Syn seized it in her jaws. You gotta admit a shield ain' the best way t'attack stuff.

< We do perfectly well just as we are! >
she growled, indignant. < We are a formidable weapon, the best of offense and defense! >

I'm just sayin' I'd like a stick t'hit s**t with sometimes.
The weapon rumbled again in offense, and he laughed.

"Syn," he explained to Gretchen as he summoned the shield. "She bein' silly. Awright, ready."

Inside, the place wasn't just teeming with shadows: it seemed to be made of the stuff. Dawson gulped and felt his palms break out into a sweat. Maybe not so ready. But with a tug of his hat, he braced himself for impact and led them in, crushing some shadows with a swing to clear the way.

Gretchen's head tipped curiously to one side as he laughed, but she smiled as he explained, nodding. She could certainly relate to that, well, to an extent. Devika slithered through her mind like a looming presence, watching, waiting.

Pale fingers tightened around the bo staff as they stepped inside, and honey colored eyes widened as the walls themselves seemed to writhe with life. "This is insane.." Why did she think this was a good idea again? She opened her mouth to suggest they just back right on out, but Dawson was already moving, and Gretchen couldn't just leave him to it. She grit her teeth as she moved to follow him.

It didn't take long for the shadows to converge in her direction. An involuntary squeak rose up in the Death's throat as they lunged at her legs, and she kicked out automatically, sending one of the little beasts squealing away from her and right into a pair of it's mates.

Insane was right, but oddly he didn't feel as scared as he could have been. Before his first external mission, Dawson would have cowered at the idea of diving right into a place full of shadows. Now he was afraid still but aware they couldn't get hurt that bad. At least techs could pull them out here...

After hammering several shadows who tried to leap at him, he tossed a glance Gretchen's way to make sure she was keeping up. "You doin' alright, honey?" he asked, adding with what he hoped looked like an encouraging smile, "Ain' so bad, right?"

"Oh yeah," tossed back, voice a touch strained but otherwise normal. "Just peachy." There was, should Dawson happen to glance down, a rather vicious little shadowling gnawing savagely at Getchen's right ankle, but she didn't seem to notice it at first, but the sound of sharp teeth clicking on metal pulled her attention down.

"Hey! Get off that, you'll scratch it!" She kicked that leg, set it rolling across the floor, but a bunch of it's friends were closing in on all sides and the Death didn't see just how many until they were all leaping at her at once. A startled, indignant little yelp sounded as the trainee went down and disappeared beneath the dark, roiling bodies of the shadows as they swarmed.

Devika gave a harsh hiss of disappointment as the shadowlings depleted Gretchen's shield in tiny, vicious bites.

Struck between being baffled (scratch it? how did she not—what was that noise?) and alarmed that he hadn't noticed the shadowlings attached before, Dawson froze long enough to watch Gretchen go down. "s**t—!" He took a step towards her but remembered that the techs were on their way to recover her and bit his lip.

Good job, Dawson. Way to be a Moon.

Forcing himself to move on with a whine, he swung wide and continued moving.

His luck didn't last long afterwards. Nervous to be on his own, Dawson became too twitchy in his movements, and eventually his shield throwing gained too much momentum. The second he hit the floor, the shadowlings ganged up on him.

A few minutes later he found himself back at the beginning near Gretchen, coughing and a little banged up. "Fuuuuuuu...dgesicles..."

"Ah, damn." It came out as a groan as the Death sat up, rubbing at her head as she glanced around herself. She was just outside the Sun course, there were numerous tears at the bottom of her right pant leg, and there was a large young man laying on the ground beside her. "Dawson?" He coughed, not quite swearing, and she patted his arm. "You alright?" She was, relatively, so he probably was as well. Though she hadn't expected to see him there, she'd hoped he'd make it through to the end.

"Do you wanna give it another try?"

"Y-Yeah, one sec..." With a grunt, Dawson sat himself up, automatically checking that his hat was on. (It wasn't; he panicked for a moment until he realized it was on the ground and put it back on.) "Well tha' wasn't a great start, but it wasn't a bad one either...I can keep goin'."

Blinking hard to clear the spots from his eyes, he turned to Gretchen with a small, worried frown. "You good, though? I saw 'em gnawin' on yer leg back there."

"Yeah? Good. Gotta try to redeem myself after that spectacular fail." She flashed him a grin, a hand hoovering near his side to offer help if it looked like he needed it.

A blink followed his concerned question. "Yeah, I'm good, what-" She glanced down at her leg, the tears in her jeans, then chuckled. "That one tried to tear off a chunk, huh? Bet he wasn't expecting what he got." Shifting a bit so he could see better, she reached down to roll her pant leg up, revealing the prosthetic beneath. "did a bang up job of scratching up my chrome though, that's for sure." With a huff she tried to buff out a tooth mark, unsuccessfully.

"Did a bang up job a'what?" He gazed blankly at the prosthetic, blinked, and then it hit him. "Oh. Oh. Oh damn, that's cool."

Wait, cool you have a fake leg? That didn't sound right. Crap.

"Uh. I mean." He bought a little time pushing himself to his feet, waiting to see if Gretchen needed any help up. "How bad?" he asked. "Any dents? Scratches are real annoyin' in chrome, the layer tend t'be kinda shallow..." Although his experience was his cars; he wasn't sure it was as applicable here.
