As agreed previously over twitter, Melody snatched a flyer from the cafeteria board and followed the directions carefully to the new Church. She was wearing something unusually plain for her (the one on the far right). She was not sure if his intentions were to also duel and she didn't want to ruin any of her favourites evading his attacks. She knew him somewhat though and was fairly certain that wasn't - nor would be his intent. Still, you never really truly knew, not enough to risk it.

She stared at the door a moment, fleeting hesitation, and then knocked.

It was still a hubbub of noise, obstacles, and mild chaos to those not familiar with the layout, and Melody would have to be directed to Dawson by the foreman, at the back of the chapel with several others people working away on the mortar and brick wall. He was fanning himself with his hat and had smears on his old flannel shirt and face.

Noticing her belatedly, he slapped his cap on again and said, "Ah shoot, you didn' hafta come in n' getchaself messy in here, hon!" as he made his way over. "Ya shoulda texted me, I woulda met you outside."

Melody followed the foreman closely all while ducking and dodging more than her fair share of the obstacle course they were calling a chapel. She had no idea how much work was going into something like that.

When she finally reached Dawson, she may have stared just a little too long. She only met him recently, but the fact that he always wore that hat was not lost on her. Then that ended just as quickly as she began watching anyway, she was fine pretending she never noticed.

"It's okay, I'm really good at dodging messes," she smiled and gave a little twirl. "See? Spotless."

"That you are!" he chuckled. "Shoulda seen the place earlier, it was a right mess."

Hollering at the others that he'd be out for a bit (one of whom responded back with a wolf whistle and a wiggle of their brows that caused some laughter), he escorted Melody out of the chapel. "So what kinda necklace are we talkin' here?" he asked, trying to clean himself up a little. "Like laser shootin' pendant or somethin'? 'Cause that'd be pretty neat."

Melody looked quite perplexed by the the wolf noises and as soon as they were out of earshot she lowered her voice to ask, "is your weapon a werewolf?" She didn't quite catch the intent... or maybe she did and just pretended she didn't.

At the yard now, Melody gently pulled on the black metal chain around her neck, fishing the purple-jeweled pendant from under her dress where it was partially concealed. She wrapped the chain at each end around both index fingers and held it aloft for a better look. The design appeared fairly simple at first glance, but upon closer inspection the gem itself had a very intricate cut to it causing it to almost appear to glow. "No, he doesn't shoot lazers or anything like that," She chuckled at the ridiculous mental image of shooting death from her chest.

"He does, um, he does this," she let the chain go. The pendant flopping against her chest before the glowing spread and grew until black plate metal covered her entire shoulder and from it protruded sharp feather-like spikes. Violet runes etched across the sturdy surface glowed as a clear sign, this was, in fact, her weapon. Chains of metal, once dainty, now large and appear heavy as they looped around her neck, draped around both shoulders like a loose scarf, violet gemmed pendant still present but far more intricate now as small gems dotted around it and spread outward towards he rest of the plate.

"um... see? Fancier necklace."

"Chimera," he reminded her, trying to play it off since she seemed oblivious, and he was more than happy to avoid being teased some more.

Dawson watched the totem transform with raised brows. Sure, it was a necklace...ish...but she sort of forgot to mention the whole...s**t, what was it called. He snapped his fingers a few times before finally calling out, "Pauldron, right? Looks nasty--I mean, in a good way, with 'em spikes. You could shove someone right in the..."

Right, Melody probably wouldn't appreciate the imagery.

"So you ever use him in a spar or mission?" he asked. "That guy on twitter was goin' off, but it didn' sound like y'all actually did somethin'."

Melody blinked, "paul-what? Spikes?" She twisted and craned her head back to try and get a better look at Whisper and tapped the broad side of one of the 'feathers'. "Am I seeing the same thing as you?"

She turned her head back around to look at Dawson, "No to both. I've not been... awake long... there haven't been any 'missions' that I'm aware of and I haven't been to the deceptively named 'training fields' since that guy tried to fight me."

"Pauldron," he repeated. "Stormtroopers get different colored ones t'designate ranks in Star Wars, but errywhere else they're like an armor piece."

Melody was definitely new if she got to miss the explosions, then...Lucky her. But it was one thing to have a shield like him; at least there was maneuverability with that. With just a pauldron...

Dawson stroked his beard as he considered her weapon. "We're gonna hafta get creative," he mused aloud, wishing he could touch the weapon; he was a terribly tactile person. Syn belayed the idea immediately. "Now Meri had some points: you on Moon squad, so its yer job t'make sure whoever yer watchin' stays alive, whatever we end up doin'. The way yer boy's set up, it'll be easier t'do it defensively the way you wanna, though--not picking fights, I mean, not tha' any a'us do tha' fer the job description, but being able t'defend them while you do yer field medic thing."

Dawson gestured at the armored arm with a smile. "We're gonna officially call that yer good side."

Melody just sort of stared at Dawson blankly during his entire explanation. She could not confirm nor deny any understanding of it so simply smiled patiently until he was done and began touching on subjects she could be more... relaxed in her response to.

"That's the thing though, Ro didn't want that. He demanded I swing a weapon at him. Aside from being inappropriate, in my opinion, you can see how that might not be exactly possible." She frowned, "It sort of goes against the point of defending anyone to haul off and punch someone I just met, anyway." and turned her frown on Dawson. "Or is it just me who feels that way?" That frown may have deepened just a touch more, "....are you saying I have a bad side?"

Well, despite how garbled messages could get on Twitter, he got the feeling this Roland guy had been approaching the right problem from the wrong angle, maybe. Or had just been too aggressive about it.

< Or perhaps this one is too soft, > Syn noted disdainfully. < Lace rather than steel. >

His partner's musings almost made him miss what Melody was accusing him of. "Nonono, it was a joke!" Dawson said quickly. "Like when you take a photo, people always sayin' this side or tha', but you got armor on the one, so, like...yer good side, but fer....battle..."

He scratched under his cap sheepishly. Well, even comedic geniuses like him had their flops.

"I think what he was tryin' t'get at was that you gotta get used to handlin' yer weapon," he went on. "Sometimes a mission's gonna call on you to hit somethin' to protect someone else, yeah? N', well, in his defense, most weapons you can swing. So s'much as you might not like it, yer gonna hafta know how t'hit with that thing, if only so you can keep a nasty off yer partner or friend. Or at the very least fend off, know what m'sayin'?"

Melody was squinting at Dawson the entire time he tried to explain in a manner that was satisfactory. Squinting very very hard. Unblinkingly. Her nose was wrinkling quite notably as a result. She promptly forgot what she was giving him a dirty look for when the subject shifted again.

"Maybe.... but I don't want to fight my own team. He even suggested that he wanted to hit me anyway to make me defend myself," she was clearly still flustered about the whole thing even if she was just really more annoyed that he seemed unwilling to just let it go. Which made her unwilling to let it go. "We are the same team, right?"

"A'course we are, honey. N' as a team, we gotta push each other t'be the best hunter we can be. Fer combat, that means we gotta practice with each other—sparring," Dawson added. "Doesn' mean actually fightin' with one another, but it's like when teams do a scrimmage, yeah? We practice with each other so we're ready fer the real deal."

After a pause, he asked, "What'd they tell you about this place, when you was gettin' recruited?"

"I was told there'd be treasures and adventure and I'd fight evil dragons for them! Well, maybe not specifically dragons, but still." She lit up excitedly at Dawson as she clasped her hands together, "I was told I would be rewarded handsomely and so far they were not wrong. I got to see France!"

She realized she was acting a bit overexcited and quickly calmed her tits, "I mean. I just. I guess I don;t feel like throwing myself at a complete stranger like that anyway."

"With Creedence, right?" He grinned. "Y'all had fun, I hope?" That was some pitch they had given her alright. Granted, it probably would have gotten his attention too...

"Well, how about we practice then, huh?" Dawson suggested. "Later on we could tr out a training course too, get you started on somethin' in yer interests. Runics r' pretty important t'have."

Melody smiled while bobbing her head, deciding to keep the details to herself in case she got all high-pitched excited again.

His proposal got a lot more thought however and she seemed to be considering it, "how would we.. um... you know... practice?.."
