The Chosen

User ImageRajani Misra
Meaning: Her given name means “the dark one” in Sanskrit. Her Old Sanskrit surname originally meant “mixed, manifold”, but was later associated with "honorable".
Nicknames: Raj, Raja

Gender: Female
Age: Mid-late 20s
Appearance: Slender, yet curvaceous in all the right places, Rajani has turned her fair share of heads. Her beguiling green eyes shine against her bronzed skin and her long, long hair is the darkest, richest of browns. On her own, she stands at about 5’4”, but her fondness for heeled boots makes her usual height closer to 5’7”.

Designation: Chosen
Guardian: Oberon
Companion(s): Hawthorn

Origin: She comes from everywhere and nowhere.
Station: Gypsy, singer, and sometime thief, Rajani has since been drawn into the world of intrigue, acting as an informant and spy for one Lord Blackthorn. In addition to that, she finds herself as a leader in a secret sect of the Queen's Wardens.
Spouse: n/a

Likes: Music - it has always been part of her soul. Cooking - everyone needs a hobby. Children - though she may not broadcast it.
Dislikes: Talking about herself - it's none of their bloody business.

History:
Born to a tribe of gypsies, Rajani started her life out on possibly the lowest end of the social scale. However, this never seemed to bother her, as she embraced the freedom that her way of life offered. There were hard times, of course, and she had to learn how to make do, but she was always surrounded by music and dance and sheer passion for life. To her mind, that more than made up for it. So what if the fine art of pick pocketing was part of her education? It is a useful skill…as are the other, more advanced thieving arts she learned.

Of course, thievery is not her main source of income. In fact, her primary skills make thievery more of a hobby than a necessity. Something she does to keep in practice, a force of habit. No. Rajani is exceptionally talented at something else. No matter where she goes, be it the rowdiest of taverns or a street corner, her rich, sultry, siren-like voice can take hold of hearts and draw crowds like no other. When Rajani sings, people listen. With a voice like hers, she has no trouble earning enough coin to get by.

However, there is more to her past than song and thievery. There is something painful enough that she would almost rather forget about it. Almost, that is, except that her love outweighs her pain. Rajani had a little sister, once, and she loved her dearly. Her name was Lana, and she was full of laughter and optimism and wonder. Unfortunately, no matter how much she loved life, she was born sickly, and she never got better.

No matter how hard they looked, there was no medicine that could be bought, begged, or stolen to make Lana well. So little by little she withered away until, at the tender age of twelve, her sickness got the best of her and she died. Rajani was never quite the same after that. Certainly, she did not act so very different on the outside, but she became more distant, a hardness formed around her heart that was not there before. Unable to live surrounded by the memory of her sister, she left her tribe behind in hopes of a fresh start. With it, she left behind her family name, living only as Rajani: wanderer, singer, and burglar.

Not even Oberon, once she found him, with his beloved and vexing ways has managed to fully open her heart to the world, though he has his own place there. Yet as war seems to be drawing near and she is saddled with the weight of a responsibility she had long since left behind, Rajani finds herself surrounded by a growing number of people - people that, if she were willing to admit it aloud, would well be considered friends.

As her insular world expands to include more people and responsibilities and all of the complexities that go with them, Rajani will soon find herself faced with figures from her past.

About:
Perhaps because of her upbringing, Rajani has a freer spirit than is generally acceptable by the standards of respectable Sunderlander society. Lucky for her, then, that she rarely mingles with the higher classes. Instead, she makes her living amongst the commoners, the sailors, the soldiers. People who are less likely to mind her willfulness.

Independent, confident, and sensual, Raja is both aware of the allure that she holds for many a man – and the occasional woman – and is at the same time unable to notice when someone has a genuine interest in her that supersedes the superficial. It only makes sense, then, that it takes a certain kind of person to truly befriend her. Even more than the sharp tongue that so often drives the sensitive and foolish away, Raja rarely makes the effort to get close to anyone. She does not see the point, as she spends so much of her time traveling. Thus, it is usually up to the other party to try to win anything more than her fleeting attention.

Somewhere in all of this, she seems to have developed the ability to intimidate. If they were brave enough, some might tell her that she has always been scary, but it seems to have become more pronounced now that she has an Awakened Guardian at her back and genuine combat training under her belt.

Important People:
Lana Misra: Rajani's beloved little sister. Though her spirit was strong, her body was born weak. After living a painful and sickly life, she died at the age of twelve.
Savitr Misra: The elder brother whom she adored as a girl. He taught her many things, including such skills as knife work and thievery.
Harinder Misra: Her father. Though undeniably loving, their relationship is a complicated one.
The Friedrichs Grimm: Though they belong to a crime family and are nasty and dangerous to most, they are two of Rajani's oldest friends. Although the elder Fred had secretly harbored feelings for her, Rajani's violent rejection of them forced him into the arms of his younger brother and his lover.
Macaire Draughn: Their relationship is very much one of equals. Rajani's spirit and competence impressed him while Macaire taught her and her Guardian everything he could about the fighting arts of mounted warrior and steed.
Soibhan Breanainn: This whirlwind of a woman thrust herself into Rajani's life rather abruptly. Before she knew what was happening, the Gaels woman became an odd mixture of best friend and younger sister.
Rosalie Satre: Though initially little more than the latest paramour of the younger Grimm twin, this woman soon became so much more: personal smith for Rajani and much of the splinter cell, spy under the gypsy's command, and possibly even a friend.

The Guardian

User ImageOberon
Meaning: He is named for the mythical faerie king.
Nicknames: n/a

Gender: Male
Stage: Awakened
Appearance: He is a light, dusky purple with dark purple markings reminiscent of a windy, winter day. His eyes are also purple. He wears a leather tail wrap decorated with a pair of leaves and a silver ear cuff.

Bonded: Rajani Misra
Mate: None

Obtained: He came from the Herb-Gathering Scavenger Hunt in the Midsummer’s Eve Event, 2012. Amorpheous based him off of Rosemary. Coincidentally, he is the first buck Morphy ever colored.

About:
Oberon is a very fussy, fickle buck. He is as arrogant as any king, yet his pride is easily wounded. When this happens, he enjoys a good sulk and a fair bit of melodrama. It does not help matters any that he is extremely jealous of the attention and affections of his important people. Unless someone takes care to check him, this can lead to conflicts. Sometimes, he simply makes a fool of himself, and sometimes, it leads to a bit more trouble. Of course, he prefers to avoid physical confrontation and would rather keep the arguments verbal, but he is not without his limits. If he can be pushed to it or really has no other choice, he is a surprisingly good warrior. This male is not without some redeeming qualities.

Despite acting the part of the fop, Oberon knows how to come through for those he cares about, and despite any comments or assurances he might make to the contrary, he is terribly loyal to those he considers friends and will not tolerate anyone other than himself messing with them. For all of that, his delicate disposition could very well be a front, for beneath all of that fussing lies a keen mind and a deathly serious side.

Important People:
Lethe: She is his daughter.
Lazaru: He is his son.

The Choosing

User ImageIt was early morning in a relatively small, inconsequential village on the outskirts of the Wardwood. Later in the week, Rajani would be providing music for the Midsummer celebration. For now, however, the young gypsy was free to do as she pleased. Normally, she might have taken this rare opportunity to get some extra sleep. However, it was not meant to be. All night, her dreams had been haunted by a call, an indescribable sensation that permeated her mind until all she could think about was answering that call, finding the source. Even now, she could still feel a tug in her psyche, urging her to come, come and find…something.

Gypsy though she may be, Rajani was no fool. She knew the legends well; her mother was too fond of them not to have crammed every one she could think of into Rajani's head. So, she knew of the Wardens, those stalwart defenders of Sunderland, and how they used to call their chosen to them. Had this pull happened a couple of years ago, she would have ignored it. Legends were just that: stories, little truth to them, and even if they had been true, they were relegated to the past. There were no Wardens, now. However, there was something else. She had heard the rumors, whispers of the Guardians’ return. She had even seen something, once, that looked nothing like any normal deer.

Besides, Rajani could hardly deny that Hawthorn was far more intelligent than any normal bird, and she could hardly claim all the credit for herself. There was something about that forest that spilled over to its animals, made them better, smarter, larger. So, perhaps that was it. Perhaps that doe she had seen was nothing more than a beast gifted by the forest with exceptional intellect. Perhaps there was nothing more to it. But maybe, just maybe, there was something more. Maybe this feeling that was pulling her along, deeper and deeper into the forest even as she contemplated it, was something brought about by the spirits. She could hardly deny the possibility, especially when she was allowing it to drag her along like a toy on a string.

She could not say how long she wandered in that forest, or how deep the call led her. Time seemed to lose all meaning in those minutes or hours or days. The only things that mattered were the thoughts drifting through her mind and the call guiding her through the Wardwood. All thoughts were wiped from her mind, however, at the sight that quite suddenly loomed before her.

A tree. It was a massive, ancient tree whose highest branches she could not even catch a glimpse of. It was…magnificent. But that was not what caught her attention. No, what caught her eye were hundreds upon hundreds of…totems, she supposed, suspended from its limbs. They varied wildly in color and size and shape. There were earthy tans and proud blues and serene greys, but they all had one thing in common: they were all depictions of deer. The confident songstress was reduced to an awe-struck nineteen-year-old. This was it. It was the Ward Tree of legend and it was real.

She had little time to stand there and gawk, however, as the pull intensified. She circled the tree, searching, searching for the one that called to her. When she could not see it, she scowled and began to climb. Up and up she went until, at last, she felt a sharp tug in her mind. The other side of the tree. Just a little bit farther. There! The call was coming from a totem in the shape of a tall, proud buck. He was a pale, purplish-grey in color, with a few dark, striking markings and a hint of white here and there. Oh, but he was beautiful. As soon as she managed to grab hold of him, that incessant pull quieted to a soft hum, little more than a comforting presence in the back of her mind. Rajani stared at the totem in her hand and knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that her life would never be the same again. She was Chosen.

The Companion

User ImageHawthorn
Meaning: The hawthorn tree is strongly associated with spiritual energies, ancestors, and faerie lore. It is also associated with protection, chastity, fertility, and the coming of summer, hope, and pleasure.
Nicknames: Gorgeous

Gender: Male
Age: Adult
Appearance: His body is darkest brown with a series of white spots reminiscent of a hawthorn tree in bloom. His tail, wingtips, beak, and feet are black. He has golden eyes.

Mate: None

Obtained: RNG during the Midsummer Eve Event – my first critter in Wardwood!!! <3 Morphy based his coloring on a Spotted Nutcracker.

History:
Rajani found him on the side of the Highroad tangled in a hawthorn bush, his left wing broken and useless. What she did not know is that the injury was caused by a human, a spoiled child whose nursemaid made him get rid of the bird when he hurt it; and thus, the young rook was abandoned. What she did know is that the rook needed help or he was going to die. Tormented by the death of her sister, which she was helpless to prevent, Raja could not leave the bird to his fate. Despite a rocky start, and the animal’s initial distrust of her, she set the wing and cared for him until he was healed.

Sensing that he might be happier away from humans, Rajani tried to set him free as soon as he was strong enough to survive on his own. However, the rook did not fly away. Instead, he followed the gypsy, making it clear that he was going to show her the same loyalty that she had shown him when she did not give up on him. So, their friendship was formed, and Rajani named him Hawthorn, for his beauty and in honor of the bush where she first found him. Gradually, the rook began to grow comfortable around humans again, though he is still wary of anyone who is not his mistress.

About:
A proud and noble creature, Hawthorn is surprisingly well-mannered. He takes his duties as a messenger bird quite seriously, calling in crowds for Rajani’s performances, delivering any messages that need sending…and perhaps eaves-dropping on the occasional target for his mistress’s other profession. Though somehow, Rajani is under the impression that he does not quite approve of that last bit. In the everyday, Hawthorn helps his mistress with simple tasks like fetching small items and finding lost things. Clever boy that he is, he also keeps an extra set of eyes out for unwanted guests and unsavory characters.

The Flat

Acquisition:
As a gypsy, a singer, and a thief, Rajani had never needed to settle down before. The road was her home. It was as simple as that. However, upon meeting one Kit Blackthorn, her entire world turned upside-down. If Oberon had been the start if it all, that the bloody noble had been the catalyst. Suddenly, her life's path was changed. Gypsy and singer she may be, but the thief became instead a spy. And apparently spies were in need of lodging - or so the Friedrichs Grimm would have her believe. In exchange for her keeping them in the loop of her newest job - or, more to the point, her employer's interests - they decided that she simply must have a flat of her very own. Free of charge. Just part of her commission, as it were.

The flat, of course, was of far finer quality than she might have been able to afford on a singer's wages, should she ever have chosen to settle down. However, it was not so lavish that she would be uncomfortable living there, either. In all likelihood, it had been obtained by the Friedrichs by questionable means, but that did not bother the gypsy overmuch. Because of their reputation, it was safe. It was also hers and hers alone. There would be no one else to bother her there. As an added bonus, it had a small stable which Oberon could make use of. All in all, a fine acquisition.

Layout:User Image
The flat has three levels: the cellar, the ground floor, and the second floor.

Cellar: As the name suggests, the small root cellar is used for little more than storing food. It can be accessed from the kitchen.
Ground Floor: The ground floor houses the modest, but functional kitchen and both an interior and exterior staircase with which to access the second floor. It has a staircase leading down into the root cellar from the kitchen, as well. There ground floor also has a small stable built into it, which Oberon uses because it is easier for him to move around in than the house, proper.
Second Floor: The second floor consists mainly of the living quarters. There is a bedroom, a washroom, and a small dressing room. There is also a parlor, which might serve both for personal use and entertaining guests. The parlor contains a fireplace.

Tenants:
Though Rajani had set out to live alone - or as alone as she could manage, with only a rook and a Guardian for company - fate had other plans. Oh, her home was her sanctuary, sure enough. Less than a handful of people knew where she lived and she intended for it to remain that way. No. People were not the problem.

There again, perhaps they were.

At the very least, they were the source of it. The gypsy had received not one or two or three, but four solstice puddings that year. Not only was it baffling - how that one had found her was a mystery - but she could hardly eat all of them. Particularly since she had not discovered some of them in time. Though she was loathe to waste food, something had already been at the ones she had come home to on her stoop.

Unfortunately, it seemed that was enough. The pudding thieves had decided that the food was an invitation

Before she could fathom how it had happened, Rajani found herself with four live-in mice. It was lucky for them that they were clever and useful, else she would have fed them to Hawthorn. As it stood, they could help her keep watch, go with her on jobs and help her get into tricky places, and even fetch the occasional tiny trinket for her. So, she supposed they could stick around...but she'd be damned if she were going to stoop to naming them.
