The Chosen Alexei Petrov Meaning: His first name means “defender of men” and his surname means “son of Peter”. Both are Belastranan (Russian) in origin. Nicknames: Alex Proper Address: Mister Petrov
Gender: Male Age: 18-ish Appearance: Alexei is slim in build with dreamy, light grey eyes. His pale Belastanan skin is thrown into sharp contrast by his brilliant red hair. He currently stands at the respectable height of about 5’9”, but he is liable to grow taller yet, before he is through.
Designation: Chosen Guardian: Sumerki Companion(s): n/a
Origin: He comes from the vast and frozen country of Belastrana. Station: Although he is the son of Belastranan Viscount, and inherited that title himself upon the deaths of his parents, his noble status means nothing in Sunderland. Now, he is merely a scholar's apprentice. Spouse: None
Likes: Books - really, is there anything better in the world? Dislikes: Interruptions - do not disturb.
History: Born to noble parents, Alexei was raised with certain privileges, even if his father was merely a titular Viscount who possessed no land. Alexei and his twin sister, Anna, lived a comfortable life in their father’s homeland of Belastrana. Yet even while they were raised with the Belastranan culture, their mother taught them of her own people, the people of Sunderland. She spun wondrous tales of their colorful and magical legends, and so captured the imaginations of her children.
Given the commonality of political marriages, their mixed heritage was never a source of trouble. Their parents loved them and they had little trouble getting along with the other children, despite Alexei’s shyness. In short, Alexei and his sister had a happy childhood.
Such a peaceful existence was not meant to last.
One beautiful summer morning, the news came that their parents were dead. Alexei could hardly believe it, but he had little chance to wallow in his own grief. Anna had taken the news so very, very hard, and had fallen into a state of depressive shock. With no one else to look after her properly, Alexei dedicated himself to caring for his twin and taking care of everything else. He dealt with the adults and stood his ground as best he could about whatever arrangements needed doing. In short, he grew up.
However, there were some things that he was simply not able to fix. It was a very strong possibility that whoever had killed their parents would come after them next. Fearing that any added stress might just break her, Alexei chose not to tell his sister, but the fact remained: they were no longer safe in Belastrana.
After the funeral, the twins made their way to their mother’s home country of Sunderland to live with their aunt, whom they had never met. Palisade was a large city, bustling and full of life. Its boisterous people were a little intimidating to Alexei, who was still not overly fond of crowds, but someday, perhaps, he could grow accustomed to this strange country.
In the meantime, his uncle quickly helped Alexei find an apprenticeship with a scholar, and the young man split his time between his apprenticeship and his sister. Despite everything, life had to carry on. It always would.
Perhaps that strange little totem that had called to him so on their way to Palisade would help heal the hole in his heart. The hole that not even his sister could fill.
About: Despite his status as the eldest son raised in the strict Belastranan culture, Alexei is a far cry from the stereotypical noble’s son. Indeed, he has one of the kindest, gentlest souls imaginable and is sweet to his very bones. One would be hard-pressed to find a violent thought in his mind. He is also rather shy and sometimes awkward around strangers and is endearingly (or frustratingly) oblivious to things like women.
However, this does not mean that he does not try. He feels that he ought to be the one protecting his sister, especially after Anna became so stricken at their parents’ sudden deaths. That forced him to grow up a little and start taking his brotherly duties more seriously. He found that he does, in fact, have a pretty strong backbone when he really needs it.
Of course, given his disposition, he is still a little lacking in all of the appropriate skills for being a strong leader, and he will never be the type to be able to fight everyone’s battles. He is, quite simply, too gentle. Thus, a compromise of sorts was made without his knowledge. He would serve as Anna’s confidant about most things -- only natural, given how easy he is to talk to -- but Anna would keep the things she feels he cannot deal with from him. So ultimately, she remains the one protecting him, though he does not quite realize it.
Important People: • Anna Petrova – Alexei’s older, identical twin sister. • Pyotr Volkov – The b*****d son of Alexei’s father and a maid, he was born a few years before Alexei’s mother and father were married. Neither Anna nor Alexei know about him.

The Choosing
It had been a long journey to say the least, but the Petrov twins were finally in Sunderland. Of course, they still had a ways to go before they reached their aunt and uncle in Palisade. Anna had hardly said two words the entire time. As for Alexei, well, he was doing the best he could, but it was hard. Oh, so very hard. It did not help that he had been experiencing this strange, insistent sensation for the past day or so, ever since he has set foot on the continent. It had only grown worse since they had started traveling along the outskirts of the forest. Wardwood, he remembered. It was called Wardwood, home to the Wardens of his mother’s stories.
He was not going to lie, not to himself. It hurt to be seeing all of this for the first time without her, especially when he remembered the enthusiasm with which she had told her stories. As much as she loved her family, his mother had clearly missed her homeland. Now, at last, he would get a chance to discover what it was about Sunderland that had kept such a hold on her heart.
Ah. There they were. It was time for the noon break. Alexei stepped out of the carriage and stretched, commencing the usual routine. Split the rations, make sure Anna was eating, take care of…bodily necessities. However, Alexei was feeling exceptionally restless. He hardly touched his food, and when he wandered off, well, he kept on going.
He was hardly aware of the time passing, and he certainly had no idea that their guards had organized a search and that his sister was frantic. Instead, he drifted in a kind of timeless haze, unaware of anything other than the pull that guided him.
At last, he found himself before a massive tree, larger than any he had ever seen before. Its boughs were wide and its trunk reached far up into the sky, maybe even to the heavens. That in and of itself was not so strange. What was odd, however, was that the tree was decorated with hundreds upon hundreds of deer-shaped…things, in all poses and colors. He could not bring himself to be surprised, however, and simply accepted it as a matter of course. He paced around the tree until he had reached the other side and there, hanging from a branch just above his head, was a totem in the shape of an elegant, dusky doe. With a faint smile upon his lips and the most peace he had felt for weeks in his heart, he gently took the doe from the tree and cradled her in his hands. Yes. They were meant to be together, and so they shall be.
Of course, he had no idea where he was, or quite where he had come from, so with a sense of mild trepidation, Alexei started back in the direction he was pretty sure he had come from. Several hours later, a guard let out a shout and he was soon led back to his sister, who gave him a very sharp slap on the arm and proceeded to wrap him in a back-cracking hug. Although he was appropriately sheepish at causing her worry, he was also quite pleasantly surprised to see that Anna had kept her strength. Maybe, just maybe, everything would be alright after all.
