Mist rose off the surface of the river like steam. The sky had begun to grow light but the sun had yet to peak up over roofs of Palisade's buildings. So early in the morning, the water was like glass, still and perfectly reflective. The blades of Edgar's oars skimmed the top of the water and dropped, propelling the boat forward with the swish of moving water. Nearby and following on the bank, a proud, handsome buck trotted even with the boat, enjoying the morning as much as his Chosen.

"What was it that crazy one said?" Edgar turned his head toward the bank to ask his Guardian. Much as that particular meeting at the horse sale had displeased him, Edgar had found himself ruminating on the woman's words long after she had gone. "She mentioned something about Wardens against the Queen? That's an idea."

Dardanos looked back at his Chosen. Edgar could feel the buck's agreement and knew the Guardian was every bit as intrigued as he, though perhaps Dardanos' interest stemmed mostly from his own. "I wonder how they propose to organize something like this..." he added, mostly to himself, falling to silent pondering to the sound of his oars sliding through the water.

As the dock loomed ahead through the mist, he angled the boat toward it and glided in. He pulled the oars in at the sound of the hull bumping up against the dock, climbing out and carefully tying the boat to the dock. He turned around as Dardanos came clopping down the wooden dock to nudge his shoulder in greeting.

"Greetings to you as well," he said with a smile, rubbing the buck's forehead. "How about we take a walk?" And they turned to head back up along the bank for the long miles that lay between them and home.

There was something about water that soothed even the most restless of souls. The sea was preferable, but in absence of that, the river would always do. Though the gypsy usually enjoyed the docks, on this particular morning, she was dissatisfied with the bustle of the morning workers. Instead, she sought the quiet of the banks outside of town. There, she strolled leisurely along the river accompanied only by her thoughts and her stalwart Guardian, the handsome stag known as Oberon.

True, there were many worries that she could bemoan, but this particular morning it was logistics and supply that plagued her. Rajani had to laugh at that. Imagine, a wandering gypsy singer suddenly worrying about the day to day matters of an army. It was absurd. Considering that Soibhan's little venture was primarily a thing that was hidden in plain sight, most of their needs should be met by the Queen's own suppliers. After all, they would only take direct action if the need arose.

However, all three of the defacto leaders agreed that superior arms and armaments were required. They could not afford to settle for less. Rajani had a certain smith in mind for that, though doubtless the younger Grimm twin would not thank her for it. There was also the matter of alternative provisions, in the event that they were cut off from royal supplies or in the event that such supplies were deemed...unsafe. Not to mention-

Oberon interrupted her thoughts with a gentle nudge and directed Rajani's attention further up the mist-shrouded bank. A few moments later, the human could make out a vague pair of figures that resolved themselves into a man and a Guardian.

Well, now. What have we here?

There was nothing quite like the feeling of walking through the mist in the morning and having the entire world to themselves. There was a quiet there next to the water that stilled the streak of impatience that ran deep within him and kept him sane at home, where he hardly felt at home. Something about the solitude of the morning, just him and Dardanos, made it all seem acceptable and made the father that was not his father seem almost like family.

Or, the near solitude anyway.

Dardanos' ears pricked to catch sounds coming to him from farther down the bank, from people or things yet hidden by the mist. Edgar felt a string of eagerness run through him from his Guardian, and there was a sort of electricity there that he didn't usually feel.

Magic, you say? He asked the buck silently, wondering what lay ahead. Dardanos answered in the affirmative, and sure enough, within moments Edgar could see shapes looming through the mist. It looked almost like a mirror image of him and Dardanos, only this was a woman and her Guardian was a towering thing with a long tail and an impressive rack of antlers. Edgar stared as they approached, hardly believing his eyes. But that is a... stag, he added, breathless in his thoughts. He had read about them, great awakened Guardians that used to roam these lands with their Chosen, centuries ago when Wardens were more common.

The pair of strangers were nothing remarkable. The man's clothes seemed to be good quality, but they looked well-used, as well. There was nothing in particular to give away his station in life beyond his gait, which bespoke better breeding than a typical dock hand, at least, but could easily belong to anyone from the merchant class on up. He was simply an anonymous man out for a stroll with his Guardian.

As for the buck, he was a handsome thing, though the closer they drew, the more his coat seemed to resemble the bark of a tree. Peculiar, but then so were Guardians themselves.

"Good morning," Rajani said when she was close enough to be heard without shouting. The novelty had mostly worn off, but the gypsy was not adverse to speaking to another Chosen regardless of her earlier quest for quiet.

"Good morning," Edgar returned, hardly believing his eyes. But the closer the woman drew, the harder it was to disbelieve that a great stag was indeed approaching with her.

"I must say, I have never seen such a fine stag before," he added when they were even closer. That alone made her quite remarkable. But up close, Edgar could see she was quite beautiful as well, and that seemed to make her doubly remarkable.

"My name is Edgar," he said, though he avoided giving his last name. That would be enough to alert some of his real station in life, and that he did not always want. "This is Dardanos."

Though the gypsy was by far too used to praise being lavished upon her Guardian to deem such a comment worthy of reply, the Guardian himself was a proud, vain thing. As such, he nodded his head graciously, like a king accepting a gift. Already, he could tell that this was a man of discerning taste - his eyes slid over to Rajani - so long as this man had no designs on his Chosen, of course.

The chosen in question also ignored such ridiculous thoughts from her Guardian as being beneath her notice. If she paid him heed every time he got ideas in his head, she would have no time for anything else at all. Instead, she chose the only logical course of action and behaved like a civilized person when making a new acquaintance.

"Rajani," she said by way of introduction. "And this great, vain beast is Oberon."

Oberon was, of course, quite the admirable creature and if he was vain, he certainly deserved to be. Dardanos would be like him one day, Edgar was certain. There was little enough he wanted for himself, but this he wanted for his Guardian. Part of him had always imagined the buck as a great awakened stag, ever since he had read about them in the historic accounts of Sunderland in the past. And that way, their frequent discussions would flow with much more ease. Words, after all, communicated far better than pictures and emotions.

On his part, Dardanos regarded the stag with interest, recognizing that Oberon was one of the great ones, still rare in Sunderland since the slow and recent reawakening of magic flowing back into the land. The magic that had lain dormant for so many years, beyond living memory. But it was creeping back, for good or worse, and the two of them were proof of it.

"There is nothing like fighting a war with a great stag by your side," Edgar began, having had war on his mind since meeting that crazy Gaelic woman at the horse fair. It was about time he accepted it as fact, he supposed, though he still thought the Queen's method of declaring war manipulative at best. Of course, he hardly approved of the woman, whose mere birth did not justify her authority in his mind. But that, of course, was an entirely separate set of worries.

"An unfortunate necessity," she said, for that was exactly what she saw the coming war as. If it were left to her, Rajani would simply go on living her life as a wandering singer. Instead, she found herself tangled in the leadership of a slightly less-than-authorized group of Wardens within the Queen's army. "But there is no one I would rather have beside me," she acceded. "And if we are to wage a war, at least we can be prepared for it." Spirits knew she had spent enough time plotting with Macaire and Soibhan to see to that.

Oberon eyed the younger buck, not exactly curious, but not hostile, either. If anything, he seemed to be assessing Dardanos. Whatever he found, it seemed to satisfy him, for he soon left off his study and adopted a more general watch, following the conversation between the humans, but also keeping his senses open for danger.

"Fair enough," Edgar agreed. She had a point. It could only help to prepare for war, and there was little harm in being ready whether or not violence was coming. The entire country seemed to be on alert and waiting for the full might of the wolves to come, and there was little else to do in the meantime but to become as equipped to beat it back as they could.

Edgar himself had never seen combat or had many dealings with the army. No doubt Lord Ashworth would have been glad to see him out of the house for several years while enlisted, but the man was also jealously possessive of his fortunes and refused to risk his only heir in such a fashion. But they had a master-at-arms who was paid too much to do too little and who had taught Edgar to fight with sword and pistol and even with musket, though Edgar had never taken to the patience required to reload a gun on every shot. Not that he was under any illusions that sparring was anything like a real battle. He was simply content to know that he was not completely ill-equipped to join a fight.

"I know the feeling," Edgar added, patting the buck beside him. "I would not choose the best soldier over Dardanos at my side. But that's not to say the both of us couldn't sharpen our own skills." It was strange to imagine having anything else. The mental bond they shared had become such a vital part of Edgar's life that he could hardly stand the thought of not having that constant give-and-take, dialogue that went to and fro with hardly a pause. And there was that odd warmth that always seemed to radiate from his Guardian no matter the weather, that reassuring glow that set his world to ease. That was what he would have beside him in war.

At this point, such exchanges were becoming familiar - enough so that the gypsy did not even think twice before she made the offer. After all, he was Chosen. The more properly trained warriors they had fighting, the better. Whatever the Queen was doing did not seem to be happening as quickly as Rajani would have liked. If she planned on training her Wardens, it was not happening yet. So, she simply said, "I know just the arms master for the job, if you've an interest." And with a glance at Dardanos, she added, "He'll have a regiment for your lad, as well."

Of course, Macaire was part of Soibhan's pet project - the one that Rajani herself had somehow gotten roped into - but that was not to say that everyone who was trained by him necessarily joined their cause. Besides, in her eyes, the entire thing was harmless enough. It was simply a contingency plan in the event that the Queen was compromised by that Spirit she had picked up. It still had not occurred to her that they could be considered borderline treasonous.

"I would certainly be interested," Edgar said eagerly. Part of him wished that he could exist in blissful ignorance as so many others did, content to believe that this impending war was nothing but fanciful tales from old folklore. But the reader in him knew too much, had discovered too much about the wolves from his books to rest easy when rumors of their return had spread. Trouble was brewing.

How well suited either of them were for battle Edgar could not tell, but there was a sense of obligation that came with his knowledge and the privilege of being a Chosen. He had been roped into this war inexplicably and no doubt he and Dardanos would have a part to play before the end, no matter how large or small.

At the mention of a regiment, Edgar turned back to Rajani with a curious look, as if he thought he knew what she was thinking. "I have heard tell of an... unofficial branch of Wardens training for this war. Not quite under the Queen's jurisdiction," he said cautiously. The topic was a tricky one and it wouldn't do to mention it to the wrong people. But something about Rajani made him think that she was hardly the wrong person. "I wonder if this might be the regiment you mention."
PostPosted: Tue Aug 06, 2013 1:56 pm

"I was referring to a training regimen," she said drily, though inside she was cursing her slip of the tongue. She could play it off as nothing, but Oberon seemed to think that they ought to simply go with it and see how things played out. The stag may have been a troublesome fawn, and he might hold an unreasonable grudge against any men who got too close to her for his comfort, but there was no denying that his instincts were usually good when he so chose to share them. So, instead of deflecting his not-so-subtle inquiries, she heeded the stag.

"Though now that you mention it, I may have heard of such a group. So far as I can tell, they have nothing against the Queen, but they prefer to be prepared for any event. Seems they might be willing to take matters into their own hands, if it comes to that." The gypsy glanced up at him through her lashes, her own veiled green eyes meeting his. "What do you make of that?"

"Of course," he conceded, knowing that the topic was not an easy one to broach. A little caution on both sides was to be expected. For a moment, Edgar thought that would be the end of that, but then she seemed to change her mind and suddenly, the conversation became much more enticing.

They were venturing into territory that interested him much more than the war itself and their apparently impending doom. The Queen and her authority... he didn't think as much of that as loyal subjects ought to.

"Seems to me that a matter like our nation's safety... If it comes to it, there ought to be some brave souls who would step up to the challenge," he answered. And the Queen can throw her little fit if it pleases her to do so, was what he left unsaid. If it came down to it and she could not protect her people, Edgar didn't see any use in revering her as royalty.
PostPosted: Wed Aug 07, 2013 12:52 pm

"Indeed," she murmured. Rajani thought she sensed something else behind his words, some kind of bitterness, perhaps, but she did not pursue it. The gypsy had experienced her share of anger and resentment and could not begrudge anyone their own grievances. As she was content to let his personal feelings rest so long as they did not become a problem, she only said, "Though I would hope that they would not leap into action too soon. Seems their cause could only be harmed by impatience."

Rajani herself was in a rather unusual position, to say the least. As a gypsy, she was very distant from the politics and intrigues of Queen and Court. Perhaps it was unusual, but she did not hold any ill will toward the distant person of Queen Anne, either. The Queen simply existed, and as far as Rajani could tell, she had done well enough with her duties. Then there was that bloody noble who had pulled her into his own schemes, whatever they were. Suddenly, she had a tie to the court and a vested interest in the monarchy, albeit in a rather distant way. Then Soibhan had come along and Rajani found herself aligned just to the side of the Queen, ready to act should she and her pet Spirit fail to adequately protect the country from harm.

The gypsy doubted that her life would ever be simple again.

"As with many things," Edgar agreed. He himself was impatient at times and knew the problems such rashness could bring. With this secret regiment, however, the consequences could be far greater. It was important not to forget that it was steps away from treason and could be framed as such with a little careful wording. Unless it came of use at the most opportune moment.

It was a dance, a careful balancing act that seemed perfectly thrilling. Few had the fortune - or misfortune - to live in such precarious times and though war was never a harbinger of good fortune or comfort, there were ways to take advantage of it for everyone.

"And this group," he added. "Am I correct in assuming that one can find it by attending a training regiment?"
