If there was one thing to be said thus far about Maedoc, it was that he made for a pleasant travel companion. The journey north had been the shortest that Rajani had ever made. Perhaps there was something to be said for good company, after all.

Almost before she could warrant it, they were making the climb up the final hill before Northport. When they reached the top, she knew, the city would be sprawled beneath them, a living tapestry of flourishing trade beneath dark rooftops and whitewashed walls, a rough diamond at the edge of the kingdom. Beyond that would be an endless expanse of wild, grey sea - probably dotted with whitecaps given the strength of the wind - and above that, the largest sky there is to be seen.

Oberon had reluctantly agreed to keep pace with the horse, though he had made his opinion of the beast plainly known, but as they neared the crest, he trotted a few paces ahead and stopped. There it was, their home away from home, but the gypsy spared it scarcely a glance before she turned to face Maedoc, wondering what he would think of his first sight of the sea.

Though he was weary from their travel, he still felt excitement zing through him like a charge, enough so that he kept the yawning at bay until almost the end. As they crested the final hill, the cool breeze, smelling faintly of salt and fish, hit his face and he couldn't fight the yawn anymore. His stallion bounced a bit beneath him, jostling him enough to drag his gaze down and out, towards the sea.

It was unlike anything he'd ever seen before.

Steel gray, it moved like one unbelievably massive living creature, and he supposed that's exactly what it was. The breeze seemed to be a true wind down upon that water, because there were indeed whitecaps dotting the tops of the waves. The water slapped lazily against the shore and almost seemed to climb the weathered timbers of the docks and the ships moored there.

The town of Northport itself was alive, in a rather surly, early morning sort of way. He could see the dots of many people moving about, some from ship to dock with armloads of goods, others bustling about between stalls set up very near the same docks. He could hear the faint shouts from the sailors as they were caught by the wind.

"Mm, it's too early for people to be that energetic," he mused, flashing a lazy smile at her. While he'd always gotten up at the crack of dawn to appease his father, Maedoc loved almost nothing more than languishing at the edges of slumber for as long as possible, no matter if he lay in a bed or on the ground. "The sea is beautiful."

Whatever the gypsy found in his face, it seemed to satisfy her - indeed, it must have, since she did not scowl when his first comment was of the people and not the sea. Though it probably didn't hurt that she agreed with his assessment. It was far too early to be so lively. The prospect of crawling under some warm blankets and remaining there until a less unseemly hour was a most inviting one. She hummed in agreement, but said, "You'd have to take that up with the captains, I'm afraid."

Rajani's countenance when he commented on the sea was perhaps more peaceful than any he had seen her wear thus far. "There is nothing else like her," she agreed softly, watching the crash of the waves against the shore. Something about the sight seemed to invigorate her, because Oberon started in a quick trot down the hill to town.

"Let's get some breakfast. I know where they have the best pastries."

"I've a mind to. I'm sure all those sailors would rather be in their hammocks sleeping off their hangovers instead of working them off." He chuckled to himself, because Oberon had already started a lively trot down the slope. Clicking his tongue, Maedoc gave the horse his head and let the big beast follow at his own pace, which happened to be a bit faster than the stag in an effort to catch up with him. He'd learned rather quickly that the stallion was competitive, which was rather odd for a courser. Maybe it had come about in lieu of the lack of fighting the horse could participate in.

And in a random bit of thoughtfulness, as he stared out at the faintly roaring sea, he also realized he had yet to name the animal. That thought brought about thoughts of his sister again; she had been prone to naming anything with fur and feathers, but he'd never taken to the thought of it for horses. Mounts could be easily killed or lost in battle and getting attached to one was sure to bring about heartache in the long run.

As if sensing his thoughts, the stallion turned his head just enough to stare at Maedoc with one dark, intense eye before he bolted in true, full-flighted form. The salty air whipped his hair about and he grinned like a foolish boy.

Perhaps the horse deserved a name, here in this country that lacked tribal warfare.

They reached the town in no time. It was far busier even than it had seemed on the hilltop. People were everywhere, carry this or that, pushing carts, herding sheep, hawking wares, and gutting fish. It was a true slap to his senses and he glanced about, feeling the rumble of his stomach. Pastries sounded wonderful.

"Where to, m'lady?"

The gypsy scoffed. She very much doubted that he would get anywhere if he actually tried it. Captains, she had noticed, tended to have very strong opinions about how they dealt with their men and they rarely welcomed outside opinions on the matter. Of course, they usually had good reason, so she couldn't really blame them.

However, the lure of the sea and the familiar sensation of being in her favorite town pushed such thoughts from her mind. Instead, she and Oberon effortlessly navigated through the streets. They were moving with such purpose that they certainly had a destination in mind. "This way," she said, leading them deeper into the town, closer to the docks where the smaller of the two markets sat.

They approached a fairly inconspicuous stall that was nonetheless bustling with activity. The deliciously sweet scents unique to patisseries filled the air, clearly discernible over the scent of the sea. It looked like it would be a terrible wait to be able to so much as glimpse the delicacies for sale, but Rajani dismounted and slipped easily through the crowd.

"Raja!" cried an older woman behind the counter upon spotting the gypsy. "You've been away too long. You need to visit more often, or better yet, come settle down here with a nice young man. Have you been taking care of yourself? Let me look at you." She cupped Rajani's face in her hands and studied her critically before smiling softly. "There. You're doing just fine. Let me get something for you and our boy."

"A little extra this morning, please, Pemma," she said. "I've a friend along."

"Oh?" This bit of information seemed to interest the woman greatly and her sharp eyes seemed to find their way to Maedoc as a needle would be drawn by a magnet. A wicked smile curved her lips. "Who's this, then?"
Ashtiel Arykosa
Sorry. >.> Pemma kind of invented herself.

The horse didn't like being surrounded by so many people, but he was willing enough to obey the commands of Maedoc's hands, knees, and feet. Raj and Oberon walked through the market as if they owned it, the sea of people parting like curtains to allow them passage. Was it because they were that well known here, or because the stag was simply that intimidating?

Well, not intimidating to him....

Much.

When an elderly, but vibrant woman called out Rajani's name--or rather an adorable shortening of it that he liked better than 'Raj'--he stopped his horse and stared down at the exchange. A smile tugged his lips at the matronly air about the woman. Her words continued as if in a single string and he was reminded on his grandmother, now many years. She had been much the same.

Slipping from the horse, he took Pemma's hand gently and gave her knuckles a chaste kiss and a slight bow of his head. "Lady Pemma, my name is Maedoc. Raj told me your pastries are the best and I'm eager to try them for myself."

"Oh!" she exclaimed on a laugh, her free hand fluttering to her heart. "Aren't you a gentleman. Let's find something special, shall we." With that, she busied herself behind the counter. Rajani took the opportunity to surreptitiously slip some coin into the box - though if one wasn't looking for it, one never would have noticed. There was a reason she wasn't rotting away in a jail cell for her years of thievery, after all, and really, it wasn't so very hard to give something as compared to taking.

Rajani then leaned against the counter, watching Maedoc with something akin to amusement. "Do you shower all women with such special attention?" Perhaps she ought to be concerned. She might be traveling with another version of her brother. Spirits knew one of him was more than enough.

He made a soft noise that could have been a swallowed laugh. "No, only those that deserve it. And those happen to be few and far between." The stallion shifted against him, growing steadily more irritated with the crowd. Eyeing him, Maedoc patted a hand against the horse's neck and murmured a soothing string of words until the expressive ears flickered forward again, instead of sitting plastered to the horse's skull.

"She reminds me of my grandmother," he said softly, after a moment. And anyone that did that deserved all the special attention in the world. Though he hadn't seen Rajani's slight of hand, he slipped his fingers into the pouch at his belt and produced two gold crowns, handing them to the romani woman without preamble. A slight movement of his chin towards the box let his intentions be known.

"I've realized I need to name my horse." It was probably a very random remark from Raj's perspective, but it was a thought that seemed unwilling to quit nagging at him. Perhaps they could come up with one while they enjoyed whatever dear Pemma gave them.

Rajani hummed, accepting his reply. That was alright, then. "I never knew my grandparents," she admitted. "But Pemma is the closest thing I have."

The gypsy raised a brow at the coin, but made no comment. Instead, she simply made them disappear in much the same way as the first bit of coin had. Pemma would doubtless be wondering about that tonight, but she would have no proof. It was well enough.

She did frown, however, at his next comment. "He hasn't a name?" Though she had never owned a horse herself, that seemed very odd for such a close companion. Perhaps some would call her sentimental, but it seemed to her that even a surly donkey deserved something to distinguish himself from his companions.

Pemma chose that moment to return, bearing a parcel rather larger than one might expect from a breakfast for two - or even two and two four-legged beasts, for Rajani had no doubt that the older woman had put something in there for Oberon and the horse alike. "Here we are. A little something special for the pair of you." She set the package on the counter, then added rather sternly, "now I don't want to hear any nonsense about payment."

"I wouldn't dream of it, Pemma. We would be arguing until the moon rose."

The older woman huffed and eyed the younger suspiciously for a moment, but she really had no choice save to accept the answer. "And don't you be going to any of those rat-ridden taverns to sleep, either. I expect the both of you at the House tonight."

The gypsy's brows rose once again, but she did not refute the older woman. For all her generous spirit, it was not often that Pemma invited outsiders to the Romani wayhouse. "Of course, Pemma."

Maedoc hid his smile at the exchange by glancing out towards the sea once again. He found it surprising that the old woman had so invited him to what he guessed was a very important place for Rajani's people. He felt oddly humbled; from what he had gleaned of the Romani, they were not very open with strangers.

After a moment, he turned back to the women and bowed his head at Pemma, taking the rather large bundle of food from Rajani's rather beautiful hands. "Thank you very much, Lady Pemma," he said with a smile. "Your kindness is very welcome."

Finally, it seemed that his stallion had had enough of being on the boardwalk. He half-reared with an irritated whiny and shifted away from Maedoc. He snatched the reins of the beast at the last second and hauled roughly on them. The horse might as well have been a boulder rolling down the hill for all the good it did him. He kept a tight hold on the bundle of food however and simply followed the temperamental creature through the crowd.

"I'm going to walk off his temper," he called over his shoulder, glad only that the stallion wasn't biting or kicking anyone. "Be back in a moment."

The women watched as Maedoc strode into the crowd. "Such a nice young man," Pemma said pointedly, quite deliberately echoing her earlier comments. She grinned as the younger woman slowly turned away from Maedoc's retreating figure and back to her. Young people were such fun. "How did you meet him?"

Rajani, for her part, was wary. She suspected that she knew where this could be going, and did not much like it. "He was at one of my performances. We spoke afterward." She neglected to mention that he bought her dinner. It would only encourage Pemma.

"Oh, I bet he was a perfect gentleman. Our boy must have had a fit." Oberon, who had eased up behind his chosen, snorted indignantly. This only made Pemma laugh. "You'll have to learn to share sometime. Raja deserves a good man in her bed."

"Pemma!" she cried, shocked despite herself. The older woman ignored her, of course.

"I'll bet that one knows how to treat a woman. When did he start courting you?"

"Pemma, we just met," she said, horrified and scandalized all at once.

"What does that have to do with anything, dear? Two young people traveling together - and don't you be telling me you weren't. I'm old, not senile. That man has intentions. Try not to keep him in suspense for too long. Playing coy is one thing, but if you wait too long, he might think you're stringing him along."

By that point, the young singer had buried her burning face in her hands, wishing more than anything to disappear and be spared Pemma's well-meaning, but mortifying nosiness.

"Oh, and there he is. Welcome back, dear. You two have fun and be careful. I'd best get back to work before they use the wrong icing or some other nonsense." With that, she bustled back into the depths of the shop, leaving one very red-faced gypsy to face a man and his horse. Oberon gave him quite the unhappy look.

He opened his mouth to respond but then closed it again, slowly, as he looked between the ornery Oberon, the disappearing Pemma, and...the bright, adorably red-faced Rajani. She was...blushing? The color complimented her skin nicely and he found himself rather enjoying the look on her. That thought led to some others and he felt very ungentlemanly for a moment.

"Dare I ask?" he said carefully, trying in vain to keep his lips from curling into a smile. Something very primal warned him not to embarrass this woman further; he had a very strong feeling that she would not hesitate to make him pay for it in some unique and probably painful ways.

The gypsy at first could not bring herself to meet his eyes. Pemma had been far too opinionated, even if she was being ridiculous. Looking at the man would only add unwanted images to the words. However, at his question and its poorly concealed mirth, she glared at him, her cheeks burning hotter. "Not if you know what's good for you," she hissed. He was laughing at her! Damn the man.

In a smooth, practiced movement, she mounted her Guardian and turned toward the sea. Without much care for the people in his path - not that many stayed there - Oberon made headed away from the town. Perhaps a good ride would sooth her embarrassment and n** her temper in the bud. Then, perhaps, they could eat in peace...which was most certainly not anything remotely romantic.

She growled under her breath and urged Oberon into a full gallop down the beach.

In an attempt to assure his own longevity, Maedoc vaulted onto the stallion's back, set the package of food carefully in his lap, and followed her in silence.

The horse took a moment to orient his footing on the sand, but soon they were trotting across it like anything else. Hell, the horse seemed to want nothing more than to go running into the water, but Maedoc kept him just at its edge for the benefit of dry, unsalty food later. The ocean breeze was stronger here, smelling more like salt and water and less like fish and commerce as the town did. It was a good smell, clean in its own way, and it made him close his eyes and turn his face into it.

His curiosity made him wonder exactly what Pemma had said to Rajani back there, but there were few things that would make a woman blush quite like that. It was a thought that made him grin widely as he urged the stallion to greater speed in an attempt to catch up with their fellows.

He'd schooled his face back into nonchalance by the time they reached Oberon and Rajani's side. Glancing at her, he lifted the bundle of food with an arched brow. His belly rumbled faintly in emphasis.

"Shall we?"

Although Rajani was not entirely certain all of the heat had faded from her cheeks, she was pretty sure she had left the bulk of her mortification back with Pemma. There had always been something about the crash of waves on the shore and the unique scents of the brisk sea breeze that called to her like no place else. It smoothed the edges of her temper back down and cooled her head. Maedoc hadn't done anything to deserve her ire. Not really. He could hardly help giving Pemma ideas - the old woman would have them so long as young men existed, and she very much doubted that was going to stop anytime soon.

She scoffed. "We had better, else your appetite will ruin the atmosphere."

There were several rocky outcroppings along the shoreline, but Oberon made for one in particular. It did not stand very far above the sand, but it proved to be wide and smooth - perhaps a place that had oft been used to sit and look upon the sea. The gypsy dismounted and took the bundle from Maedoc, bringing it to the stone to unwrap.

First to be revealed were a pair of well-polished apples. One she offered to Oberon, the other she tossed at Maedoc. "For your boy," she said, and she had not forgotten that he was very much in need of a name.

The Guardian made himself comfortable on the sand while Rajani finished unwrapping their breakfast. The feast yielded an assortment of pastries both delicate and hearty as well as a pair of cups and a flagon of what proved to be fruit juice.
