The King Harinder Misra Meaning: A curious given name, Harinder is full of meaning. It is the combination of two Sanskrit gods; the element hari means "brown, yellow, tawny" and thus refers to "monkey, horse, lion" and all that those beasts symbolize whereas indra means "possessing drops of rain". His Old Sanskrit surname originally meant “mixed, manifold”, but was later associated with "honorable". Nicknames: Inder, Hari Proper Address: Mister Misra
Gender: Male Age: Late 40s-early 50s Appearance: On the taller side of average, Harinder's body remains strong even in his advancing age. The grey streaking his neatly trimmed beard and dark brown hair speak of his years, but the crows feet at the corners of his eyes and the laugh lines on his face say that the years have been well-spent. A strong characteristic in his bloodline, his brilliant green eyes stand out in his tanned face, observing his domain from beneath winged brows. His nose shows signs of having been broken at least once before, and who can say what other scars might be hidden beneath his clothing?
Designation: Hedge Witch Specialty: It is difficult to say where his power lies. Some say he monopolizes on a touch of the Sight - one specifically geared toward the woes of his enemies - and others say he has the power to curse others with his very words. Those less inclined to believe in the mystical think he merely hides a very keen, analytical mind and is good at predicting and manipulating probable outcomes. Whatever the truth, all agree that when Harinder Misra says something, it has a way of happening. Familiar: n/a Companion(s): n/a
Origin: Gypsy in heart and blood, Harinder calls no one place his home, but instead wanders where he will. Station: Gypsy King Spouse: Nila Misra
Likes: Music - the sound of life. Dancing - the ultimate expression of emotion. His pipe - nothing quite so relaxing after a long day. Dislikes: Rabble-rousers - a difference of opinion is one thing, but tolerating such dissent is unacceptable.
History: Born to a small tribe of gypsies on the main continent, Harinder's early life was much like any young man's. There was laughter and fighting, friendship and danger. Of a certainty, he learned how to steal without getting caught, he learned how to fight to win, even if that meant playing dirty. He learned how to bargain and how to come out on top. He learned how to dance.
They were a small tribe, but they were so full of life. Until they were driven from the country they had called home. Tattered, but still hanging on, their small numbers diminished, but resolute, the tribe fled to Sunderland. Though they did not find acceptance from the natives, per say, they found more of their kin and they were not persecuted. It was as good a place as they could hope for to make a fresh start.
Their leader dead, they joined with another tribe. They were strong and treated the newcomers fairly. All except for Harinder, who had the dubious fortune of falling in love with the king's daughter. Theirs was a tumultuous courtship, filled with adventure and wonder and her father's disapproval. Still, Harinder did not give up. Instead, he learned and grew and bent himself to the task of proving himself worthy. It was a task made all the more interesting when he found himself saddled with a familiar, of all things - a grimalkin, no less. Oh, Harinder had noticed certain things about himself, to be sure, but he hadn't much thought about it until he had come to Sunderland where such things were becoming more prominent again. It was a long road, but in the end, he earned the dying king's respect. With the old man's blessing, he wed the beautiful Nila and, soon thereafter, became the new gypsy king.
Harinder was a strong leader, fair and wise and perhaps more than a little frightening at times. He brought a previously unknown prosperity to his people. As though to make his life complete, his wife bore him three children - a son and two daughters - each as beautiful as the last. Yet nothing in his life, it seemed, was destined to end without at least some tragedy.
His family fell apart when dear Lana, his youngest, sweetest child, succumbed to her lifelong illness and passed away. Rajani, his next eldest, fled the tribe; and though Savitr remained, he was so very clearly changed. And his wife? She became brittle. The darkness that she had always danced with was more pronounced. She was a woman changed. The death of his familiar was the final blow.
For a time, Harinder was a wounded man. However, he had duties and responsibilities. He had a people to lead and a son who, though grown, still needed some tending. He patched himself up and carried on - battered, but still standing. He continues to do his best by his people.
About: As King, Harinder can be a very hard and practical man if the situation calls for it. He does not back down from difficult decisions and is a shrewd opponent at a negotiating table. His occasionally unorthodox methods have kept his tribe safe and prosperous, and his people respect him for it. His temper is not a violent thing, but rather a quiet one. He will very calmly tell you exactly what you are going to do and then explain what will happen should you fail to do so. It is considered most unhealthy to cross him, so few try.
As a man, Inder loves laughter and life. Despite the weight of his duty to his people, he is very content with his life and has few regrets. Calm and warm and patient, he has a very fatherly presence when the situation warrants - perhaps because he has raised three children of his own, though only two have survived to adulthood. He is an animated storyteller and possesses a rich singing voice.
Important People: • Savitr Misra: His eldest and his only son, Savitr reminds him much of himself; though there is a dark edge of his mother in there. Still, he believes that his son will make a fine king one day...if only he would settle down with a wife and give him some grandchildren first. • Rajani Misra: His wandering child, he worries for her. He knows how hard the loss of their Lana hit her and can only pray for her peace and her return. But lately, he has heard of her little Warden project - is it a good thing for her, or is it recklessness? This must be investigated. • Lana Misra: His lost little girl, there will forever be a hole in his heart where she belongs. He visits her grave without fail once a year on the anniversary of her birth rather than her death, that he might remember her life rather than the illness that stole her from him.
