It was just before the sky would go dark, before people would close up shop and send people home fore the simple fact they thought 'wolves' were out. All it did for Marco was mean he had to do his business early in the day and miss treating several patients just because a few of his suppliers were superstitious. Not that he could blame them, yet it was still annoying to have to deal with. He wanted his things on his time, not on 'oh no the wolves are coming' time.

Grumpy over this fact, the doctor had taken up residents in a tavern just at the edges of the city, Somnium laying peacefully by his side with his own bowl of greens. Spoiled, the buck turned his nose at them for the time being, but from experience Marco knew he'd eat them by the time he was done with the stew in front of him. Spoon spinning the meal in front of him he mused over the fact that he was supposed to be a chosen, and Somnium a guardian. Supposedly they were to fight the wolves off, save Sunderland.

Supposedly.

Marco just wanted to enjoy his stew, wait for spring, help his patients, and enjoy life. Let the wolves rise up, he'd get to it... Maybe. If they even were around. Hopefully not. His thoughts going a bit dark, Somnium gave him a gentle nudge, urging him to eat, people watch. To just relax, a thing sadly for Marco, easier said than done.

It had been a long, cold ride to the city and all Rajani wanted was a hot meal and a warm bed for herself and her companions...not necessarily in that order. Most sane people stayed home in the depths of winter - and thanks to her disreputable friends, she now had a flat to call her own. Even most who traveled in the course of earning their livelihood chose one town to hunker down in for the winter, especially one as cruel as this had been, and even more so with all the disappearances in the north and the whispers of wolves that could be heard late at night.

Unfortunately, Rajani was not most people. She was not even like most gypsies. Her own flourishing career as a singer could guarantee her a permanent position at any establishment, if she so desired, but there were other factors to consider. Beyond her own wanderlust, there was the fact that she was Chosen. What duties may come with that, she was not yet entirely certain, but she somehow doubted that they would lend themselves to a sedentary lifestyle. Oh, and there was the minor detail of her second occupation.

It seemed that the skills she had acquired in her early career as a thief lent themselves well to a career as a spy for the Crown. Oh, it had started simple enough. Gather rumors of Guardians and hedge witches and wolves. Try to sort fact from fiction. Nothing dangerous, and nothing that she had not been doing anyway, but her curiosity and that blasted nobleman's little queries were dangerously close to nudging her just a little further. And of course, a little further was all the more it would take to cross that ephemeral line that she had been avoiding so skillfully. The twins were not helping in the least, either, but she supposed that they never did.

Oberon's quiet mental nudge roused her from her thoughts. It seemed that they had arrived at last. She dismounted with the ease of much practice and headed toward one of her favorite taverns - a relatively quiet place that welcomed guardians within its premises. In exchange for her performances in the evenings, she would receive free food and lodging and Oberon would have more attention than he would know what to do with - especially now that he had Awakened. It was a little disturbing, really, how people fawned over him now that he looked a little more flamboyant.

The gypsy opened the door and stepped into the welcome warmth, guardian and rook close behind.

Old faces were not a common sight on the road. Not when they had only been brief and in passing. So when a woman walked in and Marco thought he recognized her? His eyes squinted before Somnium confirmed it. It was the romani woman and her- The hind got a look of shock from both Marco and Somnium, not quite expecting that in the least. He was certainly different than what either of them remembered.

Curious, Marco debated about waving the pair over. It could certainly be nice to chat provided she wasn't thinking her had any desire beyond table company. He remembered her teases, and was not wishing a grand repeat over his past fumbles. Yet, Oberon's change had him intrigued. He's never seen a guardian looking quite that that before. It was Somnium who made the decision for Marco however, approaching the chosen, companion, and guardian. A small bow before motioning his head towards the doctor, who sat, slightly stuffed by Somnium's forwardness.

"Rajani wasn't it? I expect you're doing well even in this weather." He doubted she say if she wasn't.

It might be difficult bordering on impossible to remember the face of every person she had ever met, but Rajani never forgot a Guardian. Of course, given the particular nature of her first meeting with the pair in question, the gypsy would not have had any trouble remembering Marco even if he were not Chosen. Doctors had that effect. So, when Somnium approached her ever so politely, she knew exactly who she would find waiting at a corner table.

Despite the fact that she would love very much to claim her room and get some sleep, the gypsy supposed that she could eat first. She met the barkeep's eyes and took the chair opposite Marco.

"If it isn't the good doctor," she said as she sat. "For your patients' sake, I hope your bedside manner has improved."

He frowned. "My manner matters little as they always have. My services still cover for my poor pillow talk." He gruffed. "And less I'm treating people on their beds and more on their feet and on the road." He almost felt like adding 'like you' but thought better of it. She'd done him no ill and while she was not the most enjoyable company, to make it worse would exasperate both of them. Waving his hand he took a spoon of his stew, letting Somnium make his greeting, the more amicable of them.

The buck was eyeing Oberon, not quite sure what to make of the change. The antlers were bigger, (annoying, he wanted big antlers too), and the tail? the tail was very odd indeed. Head tilting Somnium motioned to the other guardian's tail. What had happened there?

Marco, smirking, finished his bit of stew before asking, "Haven't been falling ill on the roadside I hope? Last we met you seemed the type to camp in the cold."

The gypsy simply shook her head and sighed as though to say that there really was no hope for him. Bedside or roadside, it made little difference. His disposition simply did not lend itself to a pleasant image of a doctor. Surly and blunt, that's what he was.

Oberon swiveled an ear back, then forward again. He was used to the attention by now, and his disposition had matured to the point that he did not guard Rajani quite so jealously as he had in his youth. Of course, he was still very protective, and he did not appreciate any male attention that was directed her way, but his Chosen could take care of herself. Besides, he could always intervene if the need arose. For now, he tolerated Somnium's examination, and attempted to convey to the buck that not only had his body changed, but his mind had advanced as well. He could even speak as well as any human, if he so chose.

Rajani arched a brow. "Don't get superior with me, doctor. That was the first time I had been ill in years, and I have been quite healthy since."

A serving-woman arrived with a steaming bowl of stew and a large tankard of hot cider and set them in front of the gypsy. She wrapped her hands around the mug and inhaled the spicy-sweet aroma before taking a sip. A moment later, the woman returned with greens for Oberon and meat scraps for Hawthorn.

Somnium blinked, then just bowed his head and wandered over to the fire, sitting himself down and enjoying the warmth. Disturbing the other guardian's meal was not in the plan. Besides, Marco was likely going to get himself hit if he kept up his attitude. It was just a common enough thing for him to be... well, him, but the buck did so grow tired of his chosen's attitude.

Good intentions were not always the best really.

"Superior in what? In truth? The human body isn't infallible, nor is it utterly resistant. You're just lucky." Somnium knew what was coming next and while he might have wanted to stop it he let Marco run his mouth. "You may not like me, but you'll like what I can do for you. That is in the nature of a doctor. We're terrible, but we're highly desired."

One of the barmaids laughed, calling out "So is that what they call it now? Being a doctor?" Marco, in the middle of his drink sputtered, choking as he managed to swallow. "Thank is not what I meant!" Red tinted his face as he went to glare angrily at his stew. His mouth was running off and saying honest, innocent things. Of course, he'd get them taken out of context. Of course.
"My point stands, a doctor will be wanted even if they have poor manners. Our knowledge and experience is what saves lives after all."

There were so many problems with what he was saying, that the gypsy did not even know where to begin. Any idle hope she may have been harboring that Marco would be easier to get along with outside of a patient-doctor relationship was dashed. No more than a minute or two had passed since she had been in his presence and already a headache was trying to form. Clearly, fate had decided that a civil, stress-free conversation was out of the question. As though the other men in her life did not give her headaches enough.

Rajani's lips twitched at the barmaid's comment. Dee's off-colored humor always had amused her. "I don't know," she drawled. "I seem to recall you making certain insinuations about your skills in the bed, and not just beside it last we met."

The stew was pleasantly hot and liberally seasoned with herbs. It was exactly what she needed after her long, cold ride and she relished it for a long minute before speaking again. "A doctor will also be better-received and better-paid, and infinitely more in demand if he has decent manners. Present a patient with two doctors of equal skill, and she will invariably choose the one who won't make her feel worse than she already does with his sharp tongue. I doubt it would kill you to be mildly pleasant from time to time." She quirked a faintly mocking brow at him. "They say cheerful people are healthier. Or are you content to pass your life in misery?"

Marco was quite sure that if there was an award for being an a**, he'd hold the championship title. "I recall nothing of the sort." He huffed, taking a drink as Somnium rolled his eyes. Marco certainly recalled the events and what he said, but he'd been trying to forget them. So far it hadn't worked. And he knew that alcohol while it certainly removed thoughts, was neither healthy nor permanent.

"Since when are you an expert on doctors and their fiances?" The stew was swirled, and much like a child, he scowled when realized that she had a point. Oh it grated on him, but then a lot of things did. "It wouldn't kill me to be be more amicable, true enough." He said, looking over to Somnium who was very much staying out of it.

"But I have not seen a study on cheerfulness and it's health benefits. So until I do I'll be a skeptic. Anyway what happened to him." A spoon was waved in Oberon's direction. "The tail and whatnot. I've never seen one of the guardians looking like him."

"Perhaps you need to get your memory checked," she drawled, not for a moment believing that his memory had failed him. Of course, that would not stop her teasing him. It was far too entertaining. "As a former patient, I'm concerned."

At his mulish question, she offered him a little smile. The sort that said she had secrets and was not going to share. Thieves - even retired ones - were experts on everyone's finances. Instead, she focused on his next statement. "You admit that there is something you can improve upon. Shocking. I did not think you had it in you."

"Although," she mused, then paused to take another bite of her stew. "If you can admit that much, I am surprised that you cannot admit that you might not know everything about health." She jabbed her spoon in his direction. "It is old gypsy wisdom."

Noticing that he was being rather rudely referred to, Oberon pinned Parco with a less than appreciative glare and snorted at him disdainfully. "Nor will you often," Rajani agreed. "I believe the old stories call it Awakening." She paused to enjoy a bit more of her meal. She was famished.

Marco gave another look to his stew, slowly starting to feel not as hungry as he was before. Being told of his faults was doing nothing except make him want to go and brood or snap back. Sadly, a Rajani had proven twice over, snapping at her tended to backfire on him in terrible ways. "My memory is fine." He said, spoon tapping at the bottom of his bowl. "Your concern is also noted."

A mouthful of stew, his scowl would soon be stuck on his face as he listened to the gypsy. Swallow his pointed the spoon at her, rude or not. "I can understand when I have a quality not everyone likes, such as blunt honesty." Or a bad attitude. Something Somnium couldn't help but snort at. He knew Marco well enough to know that what he wanted to say was just the type of thing that would get him into trouble. Or, a bowl of hot stew in his face. If he really didn't want either, he'd mind Somnium and keep his mouth shut.

Marco didn't mind Somnium much, if ever.

"I don't, but the lack of evidence has me to lean against the notion. After all, some still think killing goats will save babies. All you end with is a dead goat and a dying baby." That was a horrible thing to say, dead babies. Somnium was almost ashamed of him. Almost. But Marco was still more interested in the change guardian. "Old stories lack evidence. If that is indeed, 'Awakening' as you say... it might be worth studying."

"You should be ashamed of the things that come out of your mouth, you insensitive b*****d," she snapped, seriously considering flinging her stew into his face. Dead babies, indeed. Lana might not have been a babe when she died, but Rajani was still touchy about the deaths of young ones. It was all too easy to see her little sister's sweet face in each and every one of them.

Oberon sent the doctor a wicked glare and gently nudged his Chosen's arm, offering soothing feelings and suggesting painful ways to inflict vengeance on Marco. He was pleased to catch a flicker of amusement directed at some of his suggestions.

Loosening her grip on her spoon, the gypsy reluctantly decided that her meal was too valuable to waste on an ornery, jumped-up arse of a doctor.

"And you can bloody well awaken your own Guardian and study him," she added for good measure. Oberon was not some experiment for cold, scientific-minded men and she would be damned if she let him get treated like one.

Blue eyes looked up from his meal. "Insensitive, at times. b*****d- sadly you're mistaken on that front." A sip of his drink, Marco looked to Somnium who was giving him the classic 'you dug your hole again' stare. Marcos might have been used to it, but that hardly was a thing he enjoyed to see on the guardian's face.

"You're perhaps overly sensitive," The buck threw his head back and let out a bark, clearly done with his chosen. "And I would indeed awaken and study him given the opportunity. If wolves have indeed returned, the full potential of a guardian could be the critical key to gaining the advantage." A dead stare from the doctor, a pleading one from the buck, Somnium looked to Rajani silently asking for forgiveness on Marco's idiotic behalf.

"As terrible as I am, I have given myself purpose, and that is keeping people alive. Bedside manner lacking or not."
Nyx Argyros

Rajani had been accused of a lot of things in her time. Some of them were even true. But never in her life had she been accused of being sensitive. Her skin was thicker than most, and she was more liable to lose her temper than cry if the right buttons were pushed. Sensitive? There was only one thing in the world that she might consider herself to be sensitive about. Naturally, the oblivious doctor had found it and was determined to trample all over it.

Blind to Somnium's pleading gaze, and thoroughly incensed by Marco's stare, the drink was out of Rajani's cup and all over the doctor's face almost before she realized what she was doing.

"You are a sad, pathetic man and you are sorely mistaken if you think you will find any contentment in life if you keep up this self-righteous, I'm a doctor, so I need not act human act."

The splash was met with shock followed by a frown. Somnium just had his head bowed, given up trying to rectify Marco's foolishness. The drink was over the doctor's face and front and slowly, he picked up his napkin and began to wipe himself of the liquid.

"The only one who can assert my happiness is myself." A annoyed sigh he dabbed at his coat. "And would it be better that In self-depreciate? Form whom would that serve? My humanity is not lacking." A final wipe to his face, he set the napkin down. "I prioritize different values than you, and hold different values. Like the value that no matter how I might feel, tossing my drink on someone serves no purpose other than drawing more antagonistic feelings and making the offensive party wet. And partially sticky." He scowled, looking for another cloth. "At the very least nothing will stain."
