The Human
Christopher (Kit) Blackthorn Meaning: His first name is English and means “bearing Christ”. His surname is also English. Nicknames: Kit Proper Address: Lord Blackthorn is the formal address; Blackthorn is how his acquaintances would address him; and Kit is how his family and close friends address him.
Gender: Male Age: 20-something Appearance: Broad of shoulder and narrow of waist, Kit stands at a respectable 6 feet. He has a light tan that offsets his medium blue eyes. He wears his dark blond hair a little long, so its curls have a tendency of getting unruly.
Designation: ? Specialty: ? Bonded: Marlow (does not yet exist) Companion(s): n/a
Origin: A blueblood of Sunderland, Kit was born and raised in the Dartmoor manor. Station: Heir to the Dartmoor Earldom, he has the courtesy title of Viscount Blackthorn. More than being a typical noble, Kit works as a spy and is, in fact, the right hand of the current spymaster. Spouse: n/a
Likes: Chess - it is a game of strategy and subterfuge, need I say more? Debates - few things are more stimulating than pitting intellect against intellect. Dislikes: Waiting - I would rather have it done with now, thanks all the same.
History: Born and raised in Dartmoor manor, Kit did not always have an easy childhood. As the heir to the Dartmoor Earldom, he was expected to learn certain things and behave in a certain manner. Because of this, he received extensive tutoring in all the proper subjects: language, court manners, mathematics, science, literature, and so on. In and of itself, this was not a problem. Kit was bright and an exceptionally quick study. However, there was one little hitch: Kit very easily grew bored and when he was bored, he tended to seek his own amusement. This rarely included doing his studies and acting like a proper young lord. Needless to say, he was very often in trouble and drove his nursemaid and tutors to wit’s end. Only his parents seemed able to do anything about him, but they were often busy. His tutors were less than pleased.
It would be nice to think that he outgrew this by the time he was old enough to attend university. Such thoughts are mere pipe dreams. Rather than outgrowing his habits, they grew with him. Instead of running off, he decided to challenge any- and everything that his professors taught him. This inevitably led to more than a few conflicts, though he somehow managed to avoid any serious repercussions. Regardless, his growing reputation for stirring up trouble amongst the literati attracted attention. In particular, it attracted the attention of one Lord Cotterill, the queen’s spymaster. After that, Kit’s life was never the same.
Lord Cotterill saw in Kit a great deal of potential. Enough potential, perhaps, to one day take his place. Thus, he took the young lord under his wing and began to train him in the delicate and difficult art of espionage. Instead of constantly tormenting his professors, Kit gradually backed off so as not to draw too much attention to his change in routine until he only sometimes tormented them – no more than once or twice a week, at any rate. To fill in all of that lost time, he began practicing his newly-discovered activity. Sometimes, it was simply paying more attention in social functions, and sometimes he worked to uncover specific truths – a task that Kit quickly learned he was most adept at. Then, he pieced together what he had learned until he had a veritable tapestry of the each and every person’s life inside the university.
Although he was pleased with how well his pupil took to his craft, Lord Cotterill would not let him rest until he was satisfied that Kit was qualified to inherit his position. The young lord had developed his skills, of course. Now he had to refine them – not only from the position of the seeker of information, but as one who has information to conceal. So, the old spymaster set his pupil a final test: three tasks. First, he must uncover a secret that only Lord Cotterill himself knows. Second, he must successfully keep vital information from the Lord. Third, he must prove himself capable of building and maintaining a successful and efficient intelligence network. No matter how many months or years his tasks would take, Kit must complete these tasks before the old spymaster acknowledges his qualifications. He has taken to the challenge most ardently.
Now that Kit has finished with university and has taken to a life spent more often at court than at home, the score stands as follows. The young lord’s intelligence network is thriving, and he is so very close to uncovering the spymaster’s secret. However, he is still working to keep something concealed from the sly old man’s eyes. Or rather, he is trying to decide whether any of the true secrets he has can be safely imparted to Cotterill.
About: Despite his extra duties, Kit is neither the type to blend into the woodwork nor one who is eaten up with guile. He is clever, to be sure, and he can be very cunning, but he is not often outright deceitful. Lies, after all, are only for those who need them. He possesses a very quick and analytical mind, which helps not only with using and sorting through accumulated information, but also in thinking on the spot. It is very difficult to catch this man off guard.
Beyond his mental dexterity, Kit is a relatively easygoing individual. It is difficult to raise his temper and he always appears to be in a good mood – at least outwardly. His smiling face is perhaps his most effective mask. He is generally good-natured; or at least, he has a certain moral code that he follows but his priorities sometimes shift. In truth, he can be rather flexible with most rules. He is rather fickle in that sense, as liable to follow a law or expectation as he is to disregard it. Not unlike a cat, he follows his own path, though he does take care not to get caught when he should not be.
There are, however, a couple of matters on which he is consistent. The first is his country and his people. He is loyal to Sunderland and Dartmoor and keeps their best interests at heart. When he thinks of his country, he does not think of the royal family, but the people. So long as the royal family serves the peoples’ best interests, he will remain loyal to them. The second matter, even more important to him than his country, is his family. No matter what the situation, Kit will place his family’s well-being above all else. In many instances, these two loyalties can be balanced. However, if he is tested, he will choose his family. This dangerous fact is the one thing that he keeps hidden from the world, and especially from the spymaster.
Important People: • Jack Blackthorn: Although Kit’s younger brother is quite different than he in temperament, they are quite close. • Lord Cotterill: Arthur Cotterill is the current spymaster for Queen Anne. However, he is growing older and has been searching for a worthy heir. After he found Kit, he became a mentor to the young man. They are quite close, although the lord’s test has added a particularly adversarial aspect to their relationship. They challenge each other.
