The gypsy sighed from her perch atop her unfortunately flamboyant-looking Guardian. Ever since she had started her venture north, things had gone from bad to worse. No. That wasn't quite fair. It had all started with those blasted Grimm twins long before she had decided to set out from Palisade again. From the moment their respective beasts had claimed them, her life had been nothing but a massive headache. One problem after another. Non-stop. And what did she find here in Northport, her favorite town in all of Sunderland? More trouble.
She had known before starting the journey that the wolf situation was grim, but the more accounts she heard, the more pieces of the puzzle she pieced together, the more bleak it all appeared. There had been so much death already. So many disappearances. So few survivors. In fact, if she wanted to give credit to the enemy, she might accuse them of having left survivors on purpose. What better way to instill fear in the hearts of every human than to leave a few wounded to spread tales of fear?
She scratched Oberon's neck and took a look around, seeing what there was to see. A break from her melancholy thoughts was in order.

"Well, you haven't told me much." Two days after Oliver had first shown the little wooden totem to Rob, the younger Tiller still had yet to understand how it could ever have driven his brother to ride all the way to Oldcastle and plunged himself into the depths of a forest that seemed, for all intents and purposes, to be a death trap. Or perhaps he could understand the second part; Ollie had always been prone to fanciful flirtations with death and riding into the Wardwood was just the latest in a lifelong series of terrifying stunts. Fear just didn't register the same way with Ollie, which could be a good thing and a bad thing all at once.
"There isn't much to tell," Ollie answered with a small shrug as he passed his thumb pensively over the totem's head. "Meanin', I woke up one day and knew I had to go. Absolutely had to." There was no reason behind it other than that he had known beyond the shadow of a doubt that it had to be done. And if it was significant enough to get Ollie onto a horse for any extended period of time, then it had to be important indeed. Especially now, when the rumor mills abounded with tales of brutal slayings and vicious wolves, haunting the inland north.
"And the horse was a bigger pain in my a** than you are," Ollie added with a grin and a devilish glance at his brother.
"Ah, leave it out." Rob shoved his brother from where they were both sitting, perched atop a row of unsupervised crates along the dock. "Be serious, Ollie, what's it supposed to do? Or, better yet, what are we supposed to do with it?"
But the older Tiller only shrugged. "Hell if I know."

The docks. It came as no surprise to the gypsy to find herself there; it was one of her favorite places. Though she had never been on the sea herself, she had always loved it. The fact that she had always found the people who inhabited port towns to be considerably more tolerable than most was just an extra little goodie.
For the time of day, there were surprisingly few people about. Of course, given the time of year, that was perhaps not so surprising. The Iron Sea was more treacherous than ever in the winter. Besides, tales of wolves were doubtless scaring off all but the bravest or most foolish of sailors. How much longer until trade ceased altogether? Until they were isolated from the rest of the world?
The gypsy made a disparaging noise. There she went, off on her thoughts again.
Oberon paused and indicated a pair of strangers up ahead. Surely that ought to provide enough of a distraction, if she wanted to continue. Well, it was not as though the pair of them could not handle themselves if it came to it. Rajani urged her Guardian forward. Even if she could not pass the time with the strangers, she could at least get a better view of the sea.

Why him? It was a question that had plagued Ollie for several days now, though he didn't wonder it with any sense of dread or regret. Rather, it was a question born of curiosity and fascination, and with it came a wonderful sense of adventure. The future held something now that Ollie had never envisioned and he could only imagine what it might bring.
Magic. Now that was a word that didn't run often in the Tiller family. His father was a man of the sea, as were Ollie and Rob both, and men of the sea did not put much stock in magic. They each had their own superstitions, irrational beliefs dear to their hearts, but that was not magic.
He was staring at the totem again, running a callused finger along its top edge. So flawless was the little wooden statue, so... unnatural, and yet somehow so clearly something made and perfected by natural forces.
Then, a nudge. "Ol..." Ollie glanced up. There, walking right up to them, was majestic stag, all power and grace and oddly human eyes, like he could tell what they all were thinking. Like he was one of them, encased in a deer's form.
He could tell Rob's mouth was hanging open in shock and awe. He could feel his brother tense in uncertainty. But Ollie smiled - or rather, felt himself smile. "You're one of them, aren't you?" He was holding the pale totem in hand. "You're one of these."

The dumbfounded expressions of the first man gave Rajani the first bit of amusement that she had had all day. A fair bit of awe was directed at her Guardian of late, but some were more comical about it than others.
Oberon eyed the second man with only a small amount of disdain. Though he was getting better about not being so decidedly against the thought of any human men being within a fifteen-foot radius of his Chosen, he still preferred that they keep their distance. Besides, he quickly grew bored of ignorance, and clearly this one knew next to nothing about Guardians. His long tail flicked dismissively.
"Yes, he is," Rajani said, turning her attention to the second man.

Luckily for Oberon, Ollie was far more interested in him than he was in Rajani and Rob was similarly preoccupied with the large stag that had appeared so cavalierly out of nowhere. If nothing else, the mere sight of a gypsy mounted on a large and oddly sentient deer was an odd one. Grounded creatures were a fairly rare sight aboard the Amaranta, and Rob disliked horses enough to avoid them as often as he could. He couldn't imagine what riding a deer would be like.
"You can shut your mouth now, Rob, it's just a Guardian." He nudged his brother gently with an elbow, and Rob seemed to collect himself enough to return to his usual, stoic expression. "Don't believe I've ever seen on up close," Ollie continued, studying Oberon with interest as he considered what his own near future would be like. No doubt something like this stag would materialize soon, potentially disrupting life on the seas. Would he have to give one or the other up? Ollie wasn't sure he liked the prospect of that.
"That..." Rob frowned. "Ollie, that deer wouldn't fit on a ship..." He said, concerned. Suppose something as big as this stag came out of the golden totem? The captain would absolutely refuse to let it on board.

A scowl crossed the gypsy's lips as she realized that she was being completely ignored. It was not as though she felt the need to be the center of attention at every moment - indeed, she rather preferred being out of the spotlight unless she was singing. However, she was well aware of her beauty and was not used to being ignored by men - especially not in favor of her Guardian. Admittedly, Oberon was a more impressive sight than ever before, with his new-found majesty, his long tail, and his increase in size. Not to mention his intellect and the glowing eyes. Still. It was mildly insulting.
"It's rude to talk about someone as though they are not there," she informed them, for whether they knew it or not, Oberon was as intelligent as any human. "If you're just going to gawk like a pair of schoolboys, we'll be on our way." So much for a little distraction from her woes.

"Ah," the blonde one shifted his gaze at the sound of Rajani's voice and an easy, apologetic smile came across his face. "Pard'n us, miss. S'been years since we been to school. We ain't always sure how to comport ourselves with manners." They didn't exactly need etiquette on the ship and the crew members knew each other inside out. Poor manners were generally forgiven or, more likely, disregarded completely.
Ollie hopped down from his perch and dragged his brother with him. By now, Rob had stopped gawking, as Rajani put it, and was studying both rider and stag with curiosity. There were many questions to be asked, not the least of which included why she seemed to be riding voluntarily...
"Ollie Tiller, miss, and me brother Rob," he added, in keeping with the theme of good manners. He would have reached to shake her hand, but astride the stag as she was, it was difficult to lean out to reach her.
"If we was starin', was only cause the pair o' you are quite a sight," Rob added,

Mollified, Rajani deigned to linger at least a little while longer. It was not as though she could really complain; many of the sailors she was acquainted with were guiltier of worse than simply being awe-stricken by a Guardian. Besides, now that their jaws were off of the ground and they had actually acknowledged her presence, they seemed a decent enough sort. Of course, one never knew about strangers, but if worst came to worst, they could handle themselves.
"Rajani. And this is Oberon," she said, patting the great stag's flank.
The little totem in Ollie's hands had not gone unnoticed, and she gestured to it. "If that's any indication, you will be seeing quite a lot of a similar sight. Best get used to it sooner rather than later."

"Real pleased t'meet you," Ollie added. Indeed, it was a pleasure. There was something oddly un-deerlike about Oberon, something more than deer that was not limited to the long tail and long face. And he was quite the impressive type too.
When Rajani pointed at the totem, both brothers glanced down at it and Ollie opened his palm so all four of them could see it better. It was an odd thought, the idea that the little wooden statuette would one day herald a living, breathing, moving deer. How did it work? And why? The latter was the more important question, and the one that had followed Ollie since the day he had plucked the totem off the Ward Tree.
"Well, she won't... she won't be quite as big as your Oberon, will she?" Rob said finally, looking back at Rajani. His gaze slid back to Oberon momentarily, apprehension showing briefly in his eyes as he considered the nightmare what would be housing an animal as large as that on the Amaranta. For surely, Ollie would not be leaving the deer behind when it decided to show its face.

"Could be," she said casually, amused at Rob's expense. Oh, the trials and tribulations of having a Guardian, or even having a brother with one. "There are some even bigger." Well, she had only seen one that was bigger than Oberon's current size, and Cadence certainly had to be as large as he was just to support Macaire's massive frame, but that was beside the point. The doe could grow to be as large as Oberon, but it was unlikely.
Rajani decided to take a little pity on them.
"Most are smaller," she admitted. "Even he was not this big until recently."
The stag in question eyed his chosen oven his shoulder, sending her the clear message that he did not appreciate being talked about as though he had become a cow. He was a Guardian; he was an impressive warrior; he was not some inconveniently large, useless animal. Rajani's lips twitched.

Ollie seemed to notice the glance between the stag and his Chosen, so oddly human in its grasp of the situation at hand. It was a strange feeling indeed. "We're sailors, see," he said, taking it upon himself to explain. Rob's concerns were not unfounded; a ship had limited enough space for its crew as it was, and there would always be a question of just how handy a deer would be on board. Everyone had to pay his way. "We'll be askin' a lot o' the cap'n to take her on board when she comes, and... well it's just more of a chance he'll say yes if she weren't mighty big."
He had yet to explore what his possibilities would be if the captain did not agree. Sailing was his life and the men on that boat were family, every one. It was not a choice he was prepared to make, nor one that he ever wanted to.
"He's grown recently?" Rob added curiously. Oberon certainly didn't look like he would have been growing.

The gypsy shrugged. Who was she to say how useful a Guardian would be on a ship? Chances were, she'd be good in a scrap once she grew, and Rajani supposed that a doe could be taught to help with some chores, though it really depended on the individual. It was more a question of how accommodating Ollie's Guardian would be to such a life. Not all of them would stoop to menial, human labor, and some were too aggressive to be around many people for any period of time.
At Rob's question, the stag seemed to draw himself up until he looked like something out of a painting. Legendary Defender of the People, was he. Rajani snorted.
"Do you see a great, long tail on that totem?" she asked. "He doesn't look much like it, does he. Not so very long ago, he...changed. Awakened, is the proper term. Not just his body, but his mind." It was a difficult thing to explain, but she supposed that if anyone was worth the effort, it was a newly Chosen.
"From birth, they're much cleverer than normal animals, but when they Awaken, it's like their minds suddenly expand. He is human-smart, now."

"So you can understand ever'thing we say?" Rob asked the stag, looking both fascinated and less than settled by the thought. It was an odd one by any stretch of the imagination, deer that could potentially participate in conversation. A human-smart deer could easily overpower a human-smart human, even if it didn't look like Oberon would be doing so any time soon. But the idea was still there.
"I s'ppose he awakened to fight the Wolves, then?" Ollie added. Northport had heard its fair share of rumors, but there were still plenty of people who considered it simply that - rumors. Awakened Guardians, though... that was a sign.
Ollie looked down at the totem in his hand again, wondering what it would look like, how smart it would be, what he would possibly have to do to get her accommodated on the ship... it was a whole other headache that he didn't want to deal with until he was forced to confront it.
And there was always the question of what would happen if she wasn't quite cut out for a life of sailing. Would he have to join her on land? Would they compromise? He gently stroked the totem's face. "I sure hope you'll like the sea," he murmured, half hopeful.

In response, Oberon merely regarded the man with a flat look, one that somehow communicated his opinion of Rob's intelligence. It was not a flattering opinion.
As it seemed that their conversation would, in fact, have at least some measure of substance, Rajani dismounted in favor of leaning against her Guardian. From her position standing on the ground, the brothers were rather taller than her, even with her high-heeled boots. This did not particularly bother the gypsy; she was used to it.
"I suppose so," she agreed. Why some and not others, she could not say. Perhaps it was a matter of experience, or perhaps a question of intent. Regardless, the purpose of Guardians in general seemed clear to her. "Have Guardians ever existed for any reason but to fight wolves?"
