The Chosen

User ImageFaye Donohue
Meaning: Her given name means “fairy” or “elf”. Her surname originates in Aireland (Ireland) and means “brown color”.
Nicknames: N/A
Proper Address: Miss Faye

Gender: Female
Age: 13
Appearance: A little tall for her age and decidedly scrawny, Faye is perhaps not the prettiest little girl in existence. However, she has so much verve that one might never notice this. Her brown eyes express her passion and her long, black hair tends to tangle unless it is braided. Her skin is Aireish fair and she has a spattering of freckles across her nose.

Designation: Chosen
Guardian: Lethe
Companion(s): N/A

Origin: Her parents were Airelanders, but if Faye ever lived there, she cannot remember it. Excpet for a hazy image of her parents, her earliest memories are of life on the street.
Station: She is the adoptive daughter of a professor.
Spouse: None

History:
Little is known about her early childhood, but Faye was on the streets by the time she was six years old. Whatever fate befell her parents, they left her only a name as their legacy. Luckily, the little orphaned Aireish girl was taken in by a pack of street kids. They helped feed her and gave her shelter, and taught her how to lie and con and steal to survive. For a time this was the only life she knew. The only one she could really remember. Her parents began to fade until they were little more than a hazy memory of warmth and safety.

It was during this time that she met Olivia Chandler, a merchant’s daughter who liked to run with them from time to time. If that wasn’t strange enough, the girl seemed to know things. When things would happen. The two girls did not get along at first, Faye being resentful of Olivia’s comfortable life and the young miss being annoyed that Faye was mean to her. However, their animosity lessened until a final event culminated in their friendship. They have been inseparable ever since.

A few years after Faye was first taken in by the street pack, she had another fateful meeting. A pick-pocketing attempt went wrong. The urchin was caught in the act by her mark – a clearly wealthy, but thoughtless-looking man. Apparently he was much more perceptive than she had given him credit for. Luckily, the mild-mannered man did not seem inclined to turn her in to the authorities. Instead, he introduced himself as Professor Triggs and insisted upon taking her home with him. To say that Faye was suspicious would be a terrible understatement; but somehow, before she knew it, she had been adopted by him.

After her bewildering adoption, the professor took it upon himself to educate his new ward, an experience that Faye absolutely adores, not that she would ever admit it to her street friends. Better yet, she still lived close enough to Olivia that they could still see each other – as “proper” friends in the eyes of society, no less. So, Faye now enjoys a comfortable, if unusual, life with the professor. Although they sometimes become quite exasperated with each other, they clearly care very deeply for each other. To anyone who did not know otherwise, they would appear as true father and child.

About:
Faye is open with her emotions. She laughs when she’s happy and yells when she’s mad. For the most part, she is a happy-natured girl. However, she had a rough start in life. Because of this, she is wary around strangers and can be hostile and defensive. Her temper and tom-boyish ways have gotten her into trouble more than once. To the untrained eye, she might appear confident, but in truth, she is uncertain. She seeks reassurance and is sometimes afraid to show her true feelings. For instance, she truly enjoys learning things and being well-educated, but she would never admit as much to her street friends for fear they would think she was putting on airs. Conversely, she is afraid that her peers in polite society look down their nose at her for her shady background; so she has a tendency to act out around them even though she knows it only exacerbates the problem.

In essence, Faye is a confused girl who is trying to find herself. Her heart is good and earnest, but it will likely be a while before she can truly find her place in the world.

Important People:
Professor Triggs – A quirky, mild-mannered professor and man of science. He adopted Faye after she tried to pick his pocket.
Olivia Chandler – A strange girl, she is Faye’s best friend.

The Guardian

User ImageLethe
Meaning: Literally meaning “oblivion” in ancient Greek, this name is shared by the River of Forgetfulness in the underworld as well as the goddess of forgetfulness. It is related to the Greek word for “truth”, aletheia, meaning "un-forgetfulness" or "un-concealment".
Nicknames: N/A

Gender: Female
Stage: Adult
Appearance: She is black with dark grey, river-like markings on her back. Her eyes are lavender.

Chosen: Faye Donohue
Mate: None

Obtained: She came from the Morphy’s September 2012 breedings, Oberon & Fjotli.

About: (tentative)
Lethe is not exactly a genteel doe. In fact, she can be downright mean and it is not uncommon for her to attempt to bite people. Her temper is foul and she is terribly stubborn, but she is loyal to a fault and takes her duty of protecting Faye very seriously. In fact, Faye is just about the only person in existence who has seen Lethe in anything resembling a pleasant mood. Or rather, a pleasant mood that did not come about because she had successfully drawn blood. Anyone who has met her once knows well to keep as far away from the doe as possible.

Dreaming:
Acerbic and sarcastic, it can be very difficult to get along with this doe. Most have no problem leaving her to her own devices and Lethe is perfectly fine with that. Antisocial and generally surly, she keeps to herself and has no trouble whatsoever protecting herself. It would be quite the feet to befriend her, but if anyone did manage, she would be absolutely loyal to them. Perhaps she guards herself so carefully because of this.

Important People:
Oberon – He is her father.
Fjotli – She is her mother.
Lazaru – He is her brother.
Totem // Fawn // Yearling // Adult // Masked // Cert

The Choosing

User ImageTired of tossing and turning, Faye threw off her covers and climbed out of bed. She hopped her way across the cold floor until she found her shoes and slipped them on. Then, she threw a cloak over her night clothes and slipped outside. Taking a deep breath, she oriented herself and started walking down the lane.

In the normal state of things, she would never consider worrying her new guardian. The professor had taken her in and had fed her and clothed her and was very kind. He was even teaching her letters and numbers and things when he wasn’t at university. She was still waiting for the other shoe to drop, for him to change his mind and toss her out or turn her in. Because of that, she alternated between treading carefully and acting out. Why wouldn’t he just toss her out and be done with it? Yet, she also wanted it to last as long as it could. If there was one thing Faye would never dream of doing, it was run away. But this was hardly the normal state of things.

There were these dreams. She kept having them and they were only getting worse. She could hardly close her eyes, now, before they started calling to her again. Here, come here, they seemed to say. Every night. What was a little girl to do? She could only resist for so long. There was really no choice but to see if she could find out what was calling to her. What was on the other end of that dream? Besides, she wouldn’t be long. Surely she would be back before the professor missed her.

Before she knew it, Faye was outside of the city and well on her way to the Wardwood. How much time had passed, she could never say. It was as though she were still in her dreams, floating across the land, neither hungry nor thirsty nor tired. Perhaps her dreams protected her, as well, for she saw no one on her journey.

The first time she became aware of herself, she was standing before a tree. A massive, ancient thing too large to comprehend. She could not fathom how far the roots spread, or imagine how high into the sky its massive boughs reached. And the trunk! How long would it take to walk around it? But much more interesting were the things growing from its limbs. This tree held neither flower nor fruit nor nut. Instead, it was heavy with little deer-shaped things. They were too numerous to count and they seemed to come in every color in the rainbow, and maybe even more than that. There were proud bucks and elegant does all around.

Awed, Faye could only stare at it for a while, but before too long, the urgency of her dreams reasserted itself and she circled the tree until she reached a low-hanging branch that seemed devoid of any totems at all. Worry crept into her stomach and she followed the branch from the trunk outward. The end was hidden beyond thick brush and she had to crawl under a bush to reach it, but at last she found it. There, all by itself as though forgotten by all but her was a lovely little doe, dark and mysterious with a river of grey flowing all along her back. Tentatively, Faye reached out. As her fingers brushed the totem, its eyes seemed to glow for a moment. She snatched her hand back, wide-eyed with surprise, then reached for the doe again. This time, she wrapped her fingers around the totem and took it from the tree.

Clutching it in one hand, she crawled back to the trunk, heedless of the rips and stains that she probably had in her nightgown by now. It was there, looking at the ancient tree once more, that it really hit her. Released from the spell of her dreams, Faye’s hunger and exhaustion finally made themselves known. The hunger was nothing new to her, but she was tired. So tired. It was safe here, she knew. Nothing would dare disturb the tree, even if it could find it. She knew she had to find her way home, but all she wanted to do was curl up in the massive roots and sleep. So she did. There, with the Ward Tree keeping standing guard, Faye gently cradled her new totem and took her rest. The only thing in her dreams was a deep sense of peace.
