The wind was howling, the day was bitterly cold, and a young gypsy cursed as she struggled to light a fire inside the way-house. Rajani had been lucky enough to stumble across the presently-empty building. It was a relic once intended to house travelers in their times of need but, given the advancement of technology and the spread of human civilization with its taverns and inns, it had been mostly forgotten. No one had yet bothered to pull it down, and it was still mostly serviceable, but it was not what it once might have been. One window was cracked and there was an uncomfortable draft. Least convenient, the lean-to protecting the wood pile was broken, so all of the logs were damp from last night's rain; whoever had been there last had not bothered to bring any inside.

None of this would have been more than an annoying inconvenience if not for one other little detail: Rajani was feeling a little under the weather. Though she suspected that an early flu might be the culprit, it might be nothing more than a particularly stubborn cold. Either way, it had left her in a less-than-pleasant mood.

Oberon, of course, had insisted that she seek medical assistance. He might not have much experience with disease or injury himself, but he knew of her past. He knew what had become of Lana because they could not afford good medicine for her. So, he was very insistent that his chosen would not allow herself to whither away because of something that she could easily prevent with a little help from a doctor or herbalist. At first, the gypsy had been less than inclined to agree, but she was tired enough and her headache was strong enough that she did not feel up to arguing with him for very long. In the end, she had given in and sent Hawthorn out on a search. She was not sure who she expected him to find, but at least it would quiet her guardian for a while.

As one of the sparks finally grew into a small but determined flame, she wondered how long it would be before the rook returned.

~ ~ ~

Farther along the Kingsroad, the regal bird soared. Though he might not be quite so intelligent as a guardian, or even a familiar, he was a very clever rook. He could understood what was needed and he remembered the human-sounds that would communicate his mistress's message to a healer. He would not fail her, even if it meant getting closer to another human, no matter how much he distrusted them.

There.

His sharp eyes spotted someone just over that hill. He took in the appearance of the man. At first glance, he could be anyone, just a traveler passing through. It was impossible to guess what might be in his satchels. Upon closer inspection, however, Hawthorn suspected that this might be the type of human he was meant to find.

Without further ado, he lit upon a nearby branch and cawed loudly to get the man's attention. When he was certain he had it, he relayed his message.

"To the doctor or healer: I require medical assistance. I am ill, but it is not urgent. My rook will guide you."

Somium was good for three things. Riding to get to emergency patients, for carry supplies and then for carrying patients. The guardian was rather helpful when it came to the doctor's work, and was mindful of feelings a bit more than Marco was. A nudge here, a image of a past patient that ended on a happier note, small reminders that Somnium found helped remind Marco that it was worth it to care at times. Empathy was difficult to afford when you saw death so often. Even worse when it felt like the death was on your hands.

He'd been sent to a private estate a bit far from his home, and only by much coin had he agreed to the journey. It was less a move of impracticality and more a move of logic. Going so far to be a doctor usually told him two things. One was that the person was in no rush to be healed, and another that they wanted to see Somnium. In the end, it was their money, and his profit. It was just a pain to travel and risk being unable to help those who actually needed him.

A rook cawing had the doctor looking over as Somnium peers at the bird with interest. Neither chosen nor guardian expected words from the bird, but a gentle nudge of antlers had Marco shuffling forward. If the guardian said to go? He might as well.

The walk was brisk, Marco setting the pace. If a doctor was needed he's go. And anyone who had a rook as half that intelligent was someone worth helping. The brisk pace helped stave off the cold, but from experience those who were 'ill' usually didn't say how bad things were.

---

When he arrived at the way house he cringed. A place for rats and infections no doubt. A light rapt on the door he entered. "I believe a doctor was summoned by rook?" He made it a question. Meanwhile, Somnium shuffled back and forth, trying to see inside.

At the sudden knock, Rajani looked up from her seat next to the fire, which was finally burning at a merry crackle. She relaxed, however, when Hawthorn fluttered in over the head of the stranger and settled on the back of one of the chairs. Oberon took a stepped forward to inspect the newcomer while Rajani spoke.

"Yes," she replied. "I doubt it's anything serious, but I decided it was better to err on the side of caution." By that, of course, she meant that Oberon had pestered her into it. Not that the good doctor needed to know that.

"Don't worry," she added. "I've coin to pay."

Noticing that he had yet to fully step into the room, and ignoring the fact that it was probably because Oberon was in the way, she scowled and snapped, "And come inside! What good was stopping here if you're going to let all the warm air out?"

The guardian obligingly sidled to get out of the way, but his interest was now caught by the doe he had glimpsed outside.

The deer- Either the woman was some kind of animal tamer, or, she was like himself. A step in, Somnium pushed his way past, the medical supplies on his back jostling, prompting Marco to make a fumbling grab to keep his things from falling.

The fact the woman attested to coin was a relief. Supplies safe he turned his attention back to her. The guardian was in and there was no point kicking him out. "Somnium, manners." A light chiding, the deer just set himself down, looking at Marco as if to say 'well, start already.' Closing the door, the doctor went around the other deer, kneeling next to the woman. "Marco Rossi." He introduced himself. "And my..partner Somnium. The rook mentioned illness, can you describe the symptoms?"

The other deer, content that his chosen was doing his job, looked at the other guardian. An ear flicked as he simply watched.

She eyed the other guardian, a colorful beast. Well, that was certainly unexpected. A doctor who was also a chosen - no wonder Hawthorn had picked him.

"Rajani," she replied. No need to be completely rude, even if all she felt like doing was curling up and sleeping...if she thought she could sleep. "These are Oberon and Hawthorn." She indicated each in turn.

"Feels like a cold and all that goes with it," she said, and glared at him with bleary eyes as though the symptoms should be obvious. "Headache, sniffles, coughing, and I'm tired."

Oberon eyed the younger male, wondering if he was worth his time. Hawthorn did not seem to be paying him any attention, but then, the rook had had more than his fill of young guardians while Oberon was growing up. The buck's ears swiveled back and forth in indecision before he stepped forward and sniffed at the other deer.

Marco would have liked to think he was chosen due to his skill, not his guardian, who was a pest at times. A loving pest, but a pest who ate his herb garden more than once. The man still looked the the deer, suspecting that the woman was indeed, like himself and gave a small bow of the head. It seemed rude not to, given their understanding.

"A cold is easily cured, but the conditions here are probably not helping. Have you a broth or something to heat up? If we can warm you from the inside that would be a good start, provided you don't feel ill at the sight of food. When did you last eat?"

Going to his pack the doctor began to pull out various leaves and then a small jar of honey. "We can start you with something simple and relatively cheap. Honey and herbs. Even with a cold, these should go down rather easily, and followed by a meal it should help your body fight what ails you."

Rajani's current ill temper flared at the doctor's observations. Did he think her an idiot?

"Forgive me for seeking the only shelter readily available under the present circumstances," she snapped, sarcasm dripping from every word. "I do so apologize that it is not up to your standards. Perhaps we should go outside where there is a refreshing breeze."

Oberon eyed her from the other side of the room and a clear wave of disapproval made its way into her mind. She glared at her guardian before turning back to the doctor.

"I had breakfast this morning. If I had broth with me, don't you think I would have been eating it already? Be glad there is a fire." She had planned on restocking in the next village, which she would have reached in a few hours had she not been forced to stop by her confounded illness and her stubborn guardian. All she had was a little jerky and some tea. Bloody annoying, the lot of it.

Marco had to treat people like idiots. Mostly because idiots were often to stupid to take care of themselves and thought they knew more about being a doctor than the actual doctor. Being stubborn could save your life or kill it. Marco had seen both. “Well, let me put it bluntly miss. Your shelter is s**t. If you had a wound I’d be boiling water to scour the floor to try and keep anything vile from finding it’s way inside of you. I can understand circumstance, but it doesn’t change fact. It’s a s**t shelter.” Marco had a poor opinion of a lot of things, this apparently being one of them.

Somnium snorted at him, sending that nagging to be nice.

“Since you don’t have anything, I’ll consider this a part of your fee. I have a basic broth I can make, which will help. A morning’s breakfast is a good start, but the less food in you, the less energy your body has to draw from to fight off illness. Even a simple thing as a meal of broth can tip the scales of fate in your favor. Somnium?” The guardian came over, giving his chosen a bump on the head with his antlers.
Grumbling, he fished out the small pot, setting it in the fire rather than over. A dried cube of something, add water from a skin. The Doctor covered the pot.

More grumbling, a small jar of honey, a mortar and pestle, he began the task of crushing some herbs. The guardian just seemed happy to be of help. “So tell me, how’d you end up with a talking bird and one of them?” He nodded over to the guardian. Normal deer were not ‘tamed’, not like that one.

Indignant, the gypsy glared at the doctor. "Better than no shelter at all." She was beginning to think that she should have ignored Oberon's pestering and managed on her own. It would be better than listening to this finicky man. His presence would probably do her more harm than his medicine would do her good.

Oberon sniffed indignantly at that, impressing upon her the idea that a surly doctor was better than no doctor at all. Rajani remained dubious.

She scowled outright when he spoke of tipping the scales in her favor. "And you can stop talking like a simple cold is going to kill me."

"I imagine I ended up with Oberon in the same way that you ended up with Somnium," she retorted. Honestly, did the man have to speak of them as though they were inconvenient pets that one happened to be stuck with? Rajani was hardly a kind-hearted person, but even she had a special place in her heart for her prima donna, annoying though he could be at times.

"As for Hawthorn, I nursed him back to health after I found him left for dead," she shrugged. "He has been with me ever since."
PostPosted: Wed Sep 19, 2012 4:04 pm

He stared blankly at her. “I’ve seen grown men, strong men, tell me the exact same thing. That a cold could hardly kill them. Some refused treatment. Often? Nothing happened. But a few of them? They died, very slow, very painful deaths, all because they thought they could not be brought down by such a simple thing as a cold.” It was spoken without emotion, like he was reading it out of text book.

“I am a man of practicality. Oh I can certainly avoid giving you certain things, save you money and the headache that is dealing with me, but as a doctor it is my job to provide all I can. It’s not practical to let a patient die. The more that die in my care, the worse my reputation becomes. So while you might lose your life, each life I fail to save will always cling to me and my reputation.” A hint of bitterness. “So be stubborn as you like. It’s a doctor’s prerogative to be just as stubborn as those they treat.”

He lifted the lid on the pot with a thick cloth, grabbing a spoon from his pack to give it a small stir. It needed to thicken just a bit more. “So did you wake up one morning and feel a need to simply get out? Go wandering into the woods? One morning I had a totem, the next, a fawn eating all the herbs in my garden and then clinging to me. He then went and grew into this.” The deer gave a small wiggle, as if to show himself off before going to lick at Marco’s face.
“No you, stop that- Somnium-“ The guardian kept attempting to lick his chosen’s face, stopping as soon as Marco stopped fussing, a cowlick to one side of his face. “I know nothing of birds sadly, so, I must say I’m impressed you healed him. Healing humans is difficult enough. I think I’d get fed up with a patient that couldn’t tell me what’s wrong. Helpless to help, a bane of my profession.”

She gave him a flat look in return. "Are all doctors this melodramatic?" she wondered. "Heaven forbid my doom-sayed death should add another blight to your record."

She flicked a particularly annoying lock of hair out of her face and added, "Besides, I'm not refusing treatment, I'm just pointing out the fact that you're exaggerating the situation."

As Oberon eyed the other guardian like he was a particularly strange and juvenile specimen, Rajani considered her reply. A choosing was a private thing, after all, and she was hardly going to tell this aggravating man everything.

"I felt the pull of the forest," she agreed and then glanced at Oberon. "He was a handful as a fawn...not that that's changed much."

For that, she received an indignant grunt. She ignored him and turned to Hawthorn, who was staying out of the way, but watching everything with his keen eyes. Their meeting was another thing she rarely spoke of. It was something from another time in her life and it brought back too many painful memories for her.

"His wing was broken," she said, brushing off any compliment he intended for her. "Straight-forward enough."

Marco shrugged. “I’m a pessimist at heart. I know people die, so I aim to just prevent them from dying sooner than needed if you will. Melodramatic, annoying, not the worst things a doctor can be called.” He lifted the lid to the broth, giving it a check. It should be fine by now. That decided, he pulled it away from the main bulk of the flames. “If you have a bowl or cup then hand it here, I’ll pour some in for you.”

Somnium seemed pleased with himself… until Marco started talking to again. A slightly angry look the deer bent his head over, lightly hitting horns to one thick head. Marco just hissed and sent his guardian a glare.

The doctor was quick to ignore the ‘deer’ once again. “It’s rather interesting to me, both as someone with one of them, and as a doctor. Are we chosen for any particular reason? What makes us suitable caretakers? All in all, it’s a rather interesting thing when you think about it logically. But, they don’t quite follow logic now do they?” A look to Somnium who was finding the ceiling very interesting at that moment in time.

“Anyway, you’ve saved a bird’s life. That’s more than what some men might do.” His own cup brought out, he worked on the honey and herb mixture. “That’s more than I have faith I could do. Give me a man with a broken arm and I can set it so it’ll heal clean. Give me bird with a broken wing… at most I could do guess work. One type of profession is not always suited to another you know.” A snort from Somnium. “Though the profession of being their companions is a rather interesting one a few might share, I’ll admit that much.”

"So you feel the need to spread your pessimism to your ailing patients? Your bedside manner could use some improvement." Oberon was so obliging as to carry her pack over from the corner so that Rajani could dig out a battered tin cup, which she handed to the doctor.

Studying her annoying, troublesome, stubborn, finicky buck, Rajani could not really argue with his choice of words. Humans certainly did seem to be caretakers for the guardians. Still... "The legends would have it that they are here to protect us, not the other way around. Though in this case, I do question the wisdom of our ancestors. They seem to cause more trouble than they're worth sometimes."

Oberon jerked back as though wounded and sidled away from his chosen, acting the part of the injured party. Rajani rolled her eyes at his dramatics and proceeded to ignore him, which only made him sulk all the more.

As though he knew he was the topic of discussion, Hawthorn ruffled his feathers and shifted in his perch, staring intently at the unknown human. Rajani could not pretend that it had been easy. She had suffered more than a few injuries from his beak and talons while he was still wary and scared. She had almost lost him to fever and it had been a trial to keep his wing straight in its splint so it could heal properly, but it had been worth it. More than that, it had been something she'd had to do. If she could not save him, what was the point? She shook the thoughts away and returned her focus to the matter at hand.

"You don't sound very confident in your abilities," she observed. "As a doctor, I would think you'd be better equipped to care for a living creature than a wandering singer."
PostPosted: Sun Sep 23, 2012 6:52 pm

A stare. “Depends on the patient. If they need support, I offer it. With you, you’re not dying yet, so I can afford honesty. As for bedside manner, I would not comment on it until you were actually in my bed so you could speak from experience. A lover is much different than a patient.” He snorted as Somnium, stared at Marco, head tilting slightly. His chosen was the worst flirt. A shake of the guardian’s head, he waited for some sort of reaction. Maybe Marco would get slapped. It would serve him right.

The doctor still poured the hot broth into the cut for her, offering it back. At the idea of Somnium protecting him- “Well, he gathers a fair amount of attention, and if push came to shove I suppose he might kick someone? I guess a better question would be protect us from what? Wolves don’t roam anymore and the most I worry about are bandits. “

Marco did glare at the notion he was not a good doctor. “I have my traveler’s pack, my knowledge, and my will. I do a job, as damned well as I can, because after enough people die after you do everything in your power to save them, you either give up, or you force yourself to keep at it, and remind yourself that for each failure, you have a dozen successes. If I can’t heal a wandering singer it’s not because I lack a skill, it could be anything from the cold, to infection from something else, to a person thinking they know medicine better than a doctor, which I get more often than I’d like. I’m rude, pessimistic, and stubborn, but I will be damned if I let pride or stubbornness on either end cost someone their life. Each small thing can take root and grow. So, I implore you, as much an a** I am, suffer with me as I try to keep you from getting worse.”

It was so unexpected that it took good ten seconds for comprehension to sink in. After that, of course, there was the disbelief. Did he just...? Oh, yes he did.

For a moment, she could only gape at the audacious man. Then, she glared at him over her cup of steaming broth, unsure whether she wanted to laugh or throw said broth in his face. "Flirting with your patient? You should be ashamed. I hope you don't make a habit of it."

She frowned as Oberon held himself proudly and stamped a hoof, apparently over his little sulk. He gave the clear impression of a noble warrior, though he offered no hint to the answer of Marco's question. Who were they meant to be fighting now? Rajani did not know, either. Not for certain. The best she could do is guess. "Perhaps the wolves are not here now," she considered. "But there are tales. Perhaps the wolves will return. If guardians, why not them?"

Rajani was taken aback as the doctor began his tirade. She had not intended to insult him. Well, maybe she had, but she had not expected her jibe to elicit such a strong reaction. As he went on, she felt a little smile tug at her mouth and soon it was all she could do to stifle her giggles. By the time he wrapped up his rant, however, she could take it no longer. Rajani could not help but laugh, long and heartfelt, until she started coughing and had to stop.

Gasping for breath, she stared at him through watery eyes. "At least you know you're an a**, good doctor. If you can admit that much, I suppose I can suffer through your treatment. I'm sure you'll uphold your professional honor, despite our differences."
