User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Name: Dr. Sabin Duvert (PhD, not MD)
Former Occupation razz rofessor of Cultural Anthropology and Folklore at Harvard
Current Occupation: Supervisor/Team Leader, and Third in Command
Specialty: Moral Ambiguity, Research Design, Organization, Creative Inspiration, Cultural Analysis and Group response to stress
Specialty on the Island: Combination serums and "Mythical" serums
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 215 lbs
Hair: Long, shock-white, and usually sloppily tied back into a ponytail
Eyes: Blue-grey
Distinguishing Features or Marks: A few features have raised eyebrows of some of the other staff that Sabin may have been tampering with some of the serums himself. Slight tip to his ears, longer, pointed canines and fingernails.
Voice: Generally a bemused, laid back tone with a French flavor. Sometimes, however the accent diminishes and it turns almost calculating, purring.
Clothing-style: A man of extremes and eccentricity, Sabin is usually either seen wearing garish, unmatching beachware (bermuda shorts, hawaiin shirt, and flip-flops) or dark, Victorian-era garb (tophat, buttonup shirt, vest, dark pants).
Personality: Like his clothing, Sabin is generally either excitable, curious, friendly - with a devil may care attitude about what others may think about him. However, the longer he's been on the island, the more he tends to slip into a darker, crass and manipulative mood, fascinated by the reactions of the islanders to their changes and their situation. Sometimes downright cruel, delighting in the misery of others, and getting into arguments that leave the other party flustered or questioning things that they had never doubted in the past.
Sabin works his team hard, driving them to meet goals, especially ones that coincide with his own particular interests.
Sabin delights in control, and has delusions of grandeur on the Island, however he knows his shortcoming is in his lessened understanding of the genetics behind the experiments and NEEDS Moreau's brilliance, as much as it chaffes him in dealing with the megalomaniacal and sometimes unreasonable Moreau. Sabin likes to wield control, however, and despite viewing Aubrey as the closest thing to a friend that might understand him, has been known to play off (and up) the problems between Aubrey and Moreau in order to get a stronger foothold in the chain of command.
Likes: Mythical Creatures, Meat, watching the islanders, getting a reaction out of people, Beastie, Zachary, getting his way, Successful recreations of mythical creatures
Dislikes: Being told he can't do what he wants, vegetables & vegetarians, computer errors, truly having no one to talk to

The Office of Dr. Sabin Duvert

Unlike many of the sterile white-and-chrome rooms that dominate the laboratories, Dr. Duvert's office is a darker, warmer place - with solid wood furniture, a large, antique writing desk, albeit with the virtually mandatory computer set on it. There are filing cabinets off to the side, as well as bookshelves that hug the sides of the walls.

Sitting on the corner of his desk is a geode with shimmering red crystals inside.Geode.

Eccentric knick knacks perch from places around the bookshelves - figurines from varying cultures around the world, mixed with less-than-antique sculptures of the Windstone variety.

The contents run from biology and genetic books at one extreme, to volumes of books about myths, legends, and most particularly mythological creatures. Even D&D books are found (in no small supply) on a section on his shelves.

In a safe on the wall is stored a leatherbound, handwritten journal. For the most part, it is written in French - in very sloppy handwriting, although occasionally it is intersperced with what looks like a strange made-up or shorthand writing.

A very strange "cat", Beastie, is often found in his office - black and sleek, with one pair of legs too many, and two squid-like tentacles growing out of its shoulders. Despite the freakish appearance, the cat is generally friendly and loves attention.

The Opinions of Dr. Duvert

~*Staffmembers*~

Dr. Nicholas Moreau: Moreau.... where to begin? I knew him as a student at Harvard, and had heard wind of his projects from other staffmembers with a worried air. What frightened them piqued my interest and led me to contact him. I offered him some funding for his research, and an ear for his ideas - which I saw the potential in even then. I did not expect to hear back from him after he graduated and I realized that it was no coincidence that he shared a surname with the owner of Feral Labs. However, years later I receive the invitation to join him on his island. After the death of my wife, I was ... in a slump - my job had no flavor and the research and collection and analysis of stories for the university had begun to lose its flavor for me. I needed a change of pace in my life - and this seemed to be the necessary distraction and redirection to help me feel alive again. I was not incorrect.
While his iron grip on his own control of the island is frustrating, and I know that he demands fear and respect of everyone who has taken up residence here - willingly or unwillingly, it is still irritating. I have no intentions of "narc-ing" on him or his project, quite the opposite. But with his hissy fit at my own parallel projects and "waste of money", his domineering point of view has begun to irritate me. I was only conducting research to further this project. With him, it is a strange combination of trust and distrust. Like any other person here, I have no contact with the outside world any longer - not even with my two grown children. However, he entrusts the whole island to me when he and Aubrey left for a time - and seemingly was pleased with my stint. He even makes me take the full responsibility and blame for it to Aubrey - who he sheltered. So does he trust me more or less than her? She is still my superior... even though he protects her.
At least, currently, I have my job back and appear to be in good standings. I know that he plays manipulation and power games, and I can frequently see through them. But I play along, because as much as I wish it were otherwise, I need him and his brilliance if I wish to work here... which I do, wholeheartedly.
And, now even further, he gives me edges over Aubrey: When he had to be pulled away for another extended trip, he gave me the responsibility to tamper with Aubrey's unborn child to see to his whims... and in that, the authorizations on Aubrey's chip. But doing so came with the double edge of a sizable threat. I don't like his domination. I don't like the way he is setting things up to be in total authority without even worrying about Aubrey's (or my) approval. Aubrey is a capable scientist in her own right, and there is enough groundwork on the island to keep the island and the projects going for a good many years, even without the man in control.

Dr. Aubrey Lockheart: Another interesting individual whom I have had quite a bit of contact with. She is technically my superior on the island, despite many moral issues on the cusp of her realization. Moreau shelters her, and yet at the same time I KNOW is manipulationg her to try to bring her more under his control and less loyal to the islanders. She tries to play the fence, and sees them as human, despite working for the labs. It is a ticking timebomb and I do not believe that she will be able to continue this indefinately ((and in fact has already begun to break down, but with no feasable outlet)). I can see the jealousy in Moreau's eyes whenever she talks with them, and triply so if she ever disagrees with him or tries to stand up for them (or even me). Moreau demands her loyalty above all else - and I believe that the ring that he placed around her finger is a symbol of that beyond anything else. Why? Because I believe that for Moreau to deal with this - as he is after all only human himself, he needs someone to follow him unquestionably. Aubrey is that person - in her work, in her love and relationship with him. She may not know it, but while he may pull at her heartstrings like a puppetmaster, she is probably the foundation for his sanity and sense of control on this island - more than the dozens of armed guards.
Moreau keeps going further and furhter with how he pushes Aubrey. Even after her transgressions and attempts to stand up to the man in her own way, she inadvertantly ends up more and more under his whims. Even the conception of their child - an action that she intended to use to garnish influence - is already being used against her before the child is even born. Something has to give.
Aubrey... is also the closest thing I have on the island to a real peer confident. Of course, there are many things that I cannot disclose to her... and yet, I do enjoy our talks.

Ginerva MacFroo: A very special woman - with a tittering high-pitched laugh that grates at me like nails on a chalkboard that I can hear from a floor away, I swear. She seems fascinated by me, however, and with this I cannot complain or argue. Sometimes she can make for an interesting conversation, although even she and I have different reasons for being here... And while I may be insane, she is a totally different brand of crazy.

Robin Fergusson: :/ She used to be on my staff, and took my job during my... 'suspension'. However, I know that it was not her choice, and she is more than capable. Now, at least, she is leading her own, separate team - although with several of the original members of my own.

~*Subjects*~

Awen Zyn: Moreau and Aubrey each have their "pet" islander - Lauren or Colche respectively. None of the staff seem to truly understand me - Moreau looks down on me, Aubrey and I do not usually see eye-to-eye. And as weak and ridiculous as it may sound, I do not like being alone such as this. Someone to talk to, someone to confide in... even if it is a subject, is a welcome respite. She likes it here - or at least has come to accept her place here. And her animal is fascinating. She has been given freedoms and released from the fear that gripped her through her transformation, opened to a whole new world under the water.
However, despite our friendly terms, Awen is still very much an optimistic innocent. I do enjoy talking to her and showing her favor, but I do not think that anything more than a friendship is plausible.

Zachary Bloodstone: MY project. My dragon. Zachary is the product of the intense research that I began since day one on the labs. I thought it would be possible, and other prelminary experiments in combining the DNA of more than one animal together (as with Chubbs, ordered by Moreau himself as a test of the compound) have all been leading to THIS. The progress is coming along so well, physically at least. By the end of his progressions, he should appear to be a glorious red dragon. ((And he has! He truly embodies the dragon of myth. And he has even come to accept his destiny... and his rebirth!)) I hand picked him, Moreau wanted to at leats have my experiment serve some "good" to him - and had me choose an amputee - and I am pleased with my choice - normally meek-mannered, a geologist and spelunker (collects shiny things from caves >3), and supposedly a decendent of the legendary King Arthur, he was a certain choice. Now, not only has he grown back his arm, but I couldn't be happier with the progressions.... if only he would share my sentiments. I do not see where he has room to complain - he is becoming a DRAGON. Others are becoming octopusses, snakes, losing limbs, becoming weak. he is becoming a creature of Legend. I know that Moreau himself was gloating to me, proving to me after the lockout that I needed him despite my stint in Control - by delivering to me the key that I needed to do a directed combination of many creatures - something that my team and I had been researching for MONTHS.... but who am I to argue if it does work. I know that I need him. I just wish that the serum did not have the flaws in the psychotic behavior that Zachary has expressed during his transformations... But at least those seem to have abated now that the transformation is complete! But I know that Aubrey still is reticent of the injury that he bequeathed her.
Even more wonderfully, he seems to finally be coming around to me - understand that I really am looking out for him... that he is MY masterpiece here... my project, and if he will let me, then I will take care of him. His ... fits... seem limited to his post-transformation periods... and all in all, I think I can tentatively call him a glorious success.

Sayuri Satoharu: Ahh, yes, the geisha-in-training. What a deliciously convenient story she was told to get her here - to live with her Danna. I do wonder if the other staffmembers have any idea what that means precisely. They tease me for being an anthropologist and not a "real" doctor... but there are times that my degree comes in useful. And when that places me in a position for her to believe that I am effectively her master.... is a perfect one.
And I got to chose her species, one I think appropriate - a mermaid of a sorts. Something I think that she might find... freeing - and keep some of the more .... important aspects.
However, she attached herself to me much faster than I anticipated. She was needy, and barely spoke enough English to carry a passing conversation with her. She was, despite her profession, so very much an innocent - even more than Awen. While she was an interesting diversion, and truly an art, I did not feel comfortable with her trying to get... close to me. I cannot share a bed with someone that I cannot share my thoughts... but I do not wish to delve into that proverbial can of worms. I pushed her away, and based on how quickly she ran to the arms of that "Oz"... perhaps it was a wise decision.

Joliette:Ahhh, Joliette. How fun she is to torment. I first encountered her on the island, a vegan and trying to blow open the situation to the media. I delighted in admistering her a komodo dragon serum - not JUST a carnivore, but an animal that loves meat and detests vegetables so much that it will eat bones and viscera of its prey, but leave the stomach behind as it has pre-digested greens. Lovely! She also reacts so much to my proddings and gets so aggravated. A wonderful "project".
Eventually, she came to me, ME, begging for salvation from the madness that her serum was bringing upon her. With the research into ways to suppress the animalistic mentalities, we had something at our disposal - the same injections that Chubbs was receiving. So after getting her to break down and admit that she needed me, I have started her on the same project. But apparently her gratitude could only last so long, and we are back to the "old days" - but she still is ever so much fun to prod. But I shall keep her on those serums. After all, it is pointless to torment animals that can not understand what it is that it happening to them.

The Subjects in General: I try not to get to know the subjects on a personal basis, unless I know that they are more in favor of the projects. I do not like feeling... guilt. I think Dr. Lockheart is foolish and setting herself up for a breakdown in trying to play both sides of the fence. She is deeply routed in denial at the moment. I know very well what I am doing, and so long as I do not get attached to them, then I can avoid such a weak and irritating pain.

My "cat", and thanks to Dr. Lockhart, his life was saved from culling when Moreau ... sentanced all of my personal projects to death.
I was not trying to defy him. I just did not realize that I needed his permission to work on side-projects that might be of use to the projects -,-. How was I supposed to know the pricetag of the serums. Besides, it is not like I get paid with any sort of funding that I can touch.

But I digress. Beastie (and Vasile's Cerbrutus) were the only experiments out of about half a dozen that were not culled when they were discovered because of Moreau's hissy fit that he didn't know every single thing that was going on in his labs. Designed after the Displacer Beast monster of ... alright, I admit D&D (But such a fascinating design!) Beastie was created from a normal black housecat. I unraveled the way to have a creature develop extra appendages from its own DNA - the same process that I refined in order to create Cerbrutus. However, Moreau did not listen to reason when I explained to him my reasoning - It could have uses - growing a replacement heart or kidney for a patient who needs it.....
Who am I kidding, Yes it has medical benefits (And Moreau may have even used some of this development to save Aubrey's life, I have suspicions), but I did it for this. And for Cerbrutus.

After growing an extra set of forepaws, I spliced squid tentatcles to its shoulders to make it a ... miniature.. displacer beast. However, unlike the monster, this kitten does not "despite humanity" - quite the opposite. Unlike most self-respecting animals, the cat actually took a fondness for me... and me for him.

He now stays with me - usually in my office or my rooms, though I keep him out of the labs when I am working after one incident with a knocked-over set of petry dishes.... >>

He generally spends most of the day grooming his many limbs... and subsequently coughing up hairballs. Or begging for tidbits.

Sabin Duvert's Backstory

Sabin has yet to disclose very much about his own personal history. However, things that can be pieced together from things that he has brought up in passing among various conversations is the following:

Sabin was born in rural France to a rather poor begining. He moved to America approximately when he met and eloped with Samantha. By dates listed, she appears to have been pregnant before the wedding. She bore twins while he was earning his degree at an American university. While raising the children, he subsequently earned his PhD in Cultural Anthropology and Folklore, and eventually went on to teach.

Eventually, he wound up teaching at Harvard. The kids grew up and moved out. Sabin met Dr. Moreau around campus at Harvard after hearing rumors of his eccentric and (bordering on?) unethical experiments. Duvert was one of the few professors who was genuinely interested in his work and encourged him.

And then, around 2000, Samantha tragically died in a car accident.

Sabin continued to teach at Harvard, but was going through the motions. Then, in 2005, Sabin is invited to Moreau's island....

Additional Information

Dr. Sabin Duvert is based off of an old original character by the same name and personality.

For anyone familiar with Sabin, be it through other places on Gaia, art contests and the like, he is very much the same. However anything directely related to the "Anju" part of the character will never cannonly come up in IoDM.

Sabin's (the origianl OC) homepage is HERE and contains an awesome collection of other artwork and personality notes. Additionally, the modern information at the bottom of the page is relevant with the aformentioned taken into consideration.
