Sabin breathed in a lungfull of fresh, tropical air and raised a hand to his eyes, squinting into the sunlight as he stepped out of the helicopter. His shock-white hair whipped around his face despite the now rather-inneffective hairtie that had intended on keeping it out of his face.

Not two weeks ago he had received a letter from someone he hadn't seen or spoken to in a couple of years: a brilliant and yet... ah, what did the other professors refer to him as...? "troubled".... "unscrupulous"? Something along those lines. Sabin shook his head with a private smile. Sometimes people just didn't have an eye for vision... for the truly amazing. Despite the fact that he had taught at Harvard in the Anthropology department, he had had his fair share of dabbling in the hard sciences over his rather lengthy career, and word spreads quickly through the faculty when someone like young Moreau started creating Chimera in the laboratory with mammals such as rabbits and rats - not bacteria or plants like was expected.... and beyond that - he had successfuly created some physical manifestations in creatures that survived past birth. That was all well and good... but his approaches many were calling worrysome.... the reasonings behind them. Sabin found them fascinating.
Sabin had gone to talk to him, and often found himself chatting with the man at the laboratory or the few times he took a break for food.
But he had disappeared a few years ago.... and Sabin hadn't heard hide nor hair from him... until the other week:
Apparently Moreau had gotten his hands on his own Island.... and just what project that he might be working on with that kind of resources left Sabin's head spinning - and ignited his curiousity. Certainly enough to at least come and take a look when he was sent a personal invitation....

A young woman waited for him at the helipad. She was a taller lady, only a few inches shorter than Sabin himself, with frizzy brown hair held together under a grey beret that she clutched to her head to keep it from getting caught in the spin of the helicopter rotors. She smiled pleasantly and approached, holding out one hand, while the other stayed holding onto her hat.

"Professor Duvert, I assume?"

As the helicopter pulled away, her frizzy hair settled out, getting caught up in her....

...

antlers??

Indeed, sticking out of her hair, on either side of her beret, was a set of smallish, backwards sweeping antlers, similar to those of reindeer. She didn't seem to mind (or probably know how foolish she looked with her hair caught up in them).

"Welcome to the Island of Dr. Moreau. My name is Dr. Lockhart," she pointed to a name tag on her white lab coat, "and I"ll be your official, well, welcome wagon I guess! There's a lot to see here! Shall we?"

Sabin was snapped out of his revere by the chipper voice and the sound of his name. Lowering his gaze that had been sweeping what he could make out of the island from the helipad and putting on a smile his eyes met the young woman... and did a doubletake as they immediately traveled upwards from her eyes to.... the antlers?!

"Antlers...?!" Sabin gaped in amazement before his mind even fully completed processing the question she had poised to him, his mind racing with how's and why's, Moreau's experiments at Harvard - was it possible?? His mind went to reject the possibilities that something this fascinating could be the end result of some of his projects.. but if not that, then what? A fellow "Doctor" who happened to be working at the facilities was unlikely to have had such adornments from birth and strutting about with them so casually... right? Or.... perhaps she was just eccentric, and it was some sort of costume. His heart began to sink at that option as he realized that that was the most LIKELY option.... but.... what if...

Sabin shook his head as he realized she was probably waiting for a response, but his gray-blue eyes never leaving the twin branching adornments.
"My apologies, Doctor..." Sabin fumbled for a moment, trying to remember the words that she had been speaking before his attention was diverted "Locket?" He winced, that didn't seem right. Wonderful first impression. "I'm Professor Sabin Duvert, and I got this letter in the post...?" He held up the letter unneccesarily. "From an old.... friend I suppose... of mine, Nicholas Moreau? I presume this is the right place" he finished, unaware of how obvious his introduction made the fact that he had barely been paying attention to her own.

Aubrey didn't even seen to notice her antlers until Sabin started gawking at them. "Oh!" She quickly reached up and felt them over, quickly trying to tame her mane at the same time. "Quite annoying these are. But its amazing, isn't it? Moreau has been working on a animal-based serums that can administer increased functions for a short amount of time. He claims I could probably run faster now, but I think I have more impending on that, eh?" Aubrey patted her thighs teasingly and turned, motioning for Sabin to follow her. "Anyway, I can hear better, however, which is certainly an interesting experience. But to be honest if I just needed good hearing I would have chosen the dog ears again, but you know, that's why we're here, yes? To see what works and what doesn't?"

She headed down a gravel trail off the helipad, where a Jeep was waiting for them. Aubrey, still speaking, held the door open for him. Her voice of cheerful and slightly high-pitched, yet not annoyingly so. She seemed extremely friendly and eager.

"Of course there are side affects to these... since its not actual gene therapy, the affects are only temporary. A couple of days if you're lucky. Which isn't very long considering the amount of time the Doctor spends making each one. I'm surprised he's wasting some of them on me... but I don't mind. The visual affects are the ones he seems to be most interested in. You know, with gene therapy, which is permanent, you don't see results overtly for at least a couple of weeks. I grew these blasted things in a matter of minutes. That wasn't exactly comfortable, mind you. Not to mention they make washing your hair completely overcomplicated."

She got into the Jeep and turned the ignition. "Oh, and its Doctor Lockheart, but you can call me Aubrey if you prefer."

Sabin boggled at the woman's words as his legs mechanically followed her towards the facility. Could it be true? That this Moreau had not only succeeded in successfully splicing human DNA with an animals'', but Adult human DNA? Even if, as she said, the changes were only temporary - it was AMAZING! His mind could barely keep up wiht her as each breath seemed to reveal a piece of information more fascinating than the last.

Sabin climbed into the passenger seat of the jeep as his mouth finally kicked into gear. "Wait... Dog!? You mean he''s created more than one successful animal splice? That''s phenomenal!... and ... the features retract on their own? And he''s working on non-temporary formulae? What sorts of animals? Have there been any other tests? How long did it take him to develop them..." The questions rolled from his tongue, his voice almost seeming to be attempting to make up for his stunned silence only a few moments ago. The longer he spoke the thicker his previously light French accent developed as his excitement grew. Finally, he seemed to realize his unabashed ardor and hesitated, wincing a bit. "I''m sorry... Dr... Lockheart.. you''ll have to pardon my enthusiasm, but you DO realize just how... how... absolutely indescribably AMAZING this all is, right?" Sabin's eyes shone with fervor.

Aubrey just smiled and nodded knowingly at Sabin's barrage of questions. The Jeep lurked down the gravel trail, weaving deep into a thick jungle and heading towards, in the distance, a large build on the side of a mountain.

"I''m sorry... Dr... Lockheart.. you''ll have to pardon my enthusiasm, but you DO realize just how... how... absolutely indescribably AMAZING this all is, right?"

"Oh, of course! Doctor Moreau is the greatest scientific mind of our generation! Why, I still can't believe how luck I am to be working with him! You knew him before, right? From Harvard? Did you get to work him much on a one-by-one basis? My my, there's no words for how amazing it is to see him at work. Its almost orgasmic..." you can Aubrey said that before fully thinking that through. She showed no outward sign of being incredibly embarrassed, but her cheeks turned a deep red color, accentuating the freckles over her nose.

"SO... speaking of Harvard, I just got my doctorate from there a few months ago..."

Sabin gave a bemused smirk and a silent quirk of his eyebrow at Aubrey's very... different enthusiasm. "Well... I'm not sure if I would precisely use quite those words to describe his laboratory procedures..... but I will admit that even when I knew him at Harvard he was quite brilliant in his area of specialty. I did get the opportunity to speak with him on several occasions during his work at the university, however." Sabin smiled at her blushing. "Oh? You attended as well..?" Sabin scratched his head a bit uncomfortably, not quite remembering her.

"Yup, specialized in Stem Cell Research. Guess that’s why I'm here, eh?" Anyway, let me show you around real quick. Up ahead is the main facility. Most of the labs and observatories are in there. Its pretty easy to spot."

The Jeep was quickly approaching the large grey building. But as they turned a corner, several more buildings came into view. More labs, obviously, the same style and feel. All built into the side of the cliff. Aubrey pointed to a few geographical points to remember the roads by, and as they started up the side of the mountain, a whole city appeared in the valley below. The buildings were simple, and while a great many of them looked somewhat normal apartment complexes, there were several oddly shaped ones, including ones elevated high on platforms, and several that resembled large aquariums. Looming over them on the cliff side was the Moreau Manor.

"There is no one there yet, of course. The first subjects haven't even arrived. But the doctor sure has been busy these past three years."

Aubrey parked the vehicle in front of the main building. "The Lobby is right in here, Moreau should be waiting to give you your official introduction. Then I'll be showing you your dorm. See that building over there," Aubrey pointed off to a dormitory attached to one of the lab buildings. "You'll be living in there. Its not much to look at, but they are quite nice on the interior."

Aubrey headed up the paved path to the main entrance when she seemed to remember something, and turned out. "Oh! I'm sorry, this might seem a bit rude, but I need to see some identification."

Sabin began to listen more intently to Aubrey's words the more he began to realize the magnitude of the project being held on this island that appeared so innoculous by air. His gaze traveled around to the huge steel and glass and concrete buildings that seemed to be growing out of the cliffside itself, mentally wondering where Moreau - still so young - had gotten all of the funding to bring all of this to fruit in only a few short years.

His brow furrowed as his eyes settled on the city "So... there are going to be... human subjects?" Sabin's eyes went back to the branching antlers growing from Aubrey's head and the questions in his head began to multiply... and a deeper, almost morbid fascination began to grow in him.

Sabin opened and closed his mouth as he realized that he in fact had not shown the young woman any evidence that he was who he claimed and chuckled quietly. "I'm surprised you didn't ask sooner. Considering the... ah... delicate nature of some of the experiments that must be being prepared" Sabin commented as he drew his wallet from his pocket. Sabin knew full well that there was no way in Hell that Moreau would have been able to get FDA approval to begin testing on human subjects after three short years, regardless of the nature of his experiments; ESPECIALLY considering that it obviously had a great deal to do with genetic manipulation in some form or fashion. That coupled with the remote nature of the Island itself, and the apparent secrecy surrounding the project all but confirmed that this was going on under the proverbial table.... and Sabin didn't care. If anything, it made his heart flutter a bit faster; the possibilities, the excitement. This was a project that wasn't so bound up in red tape that all life and creativity and wonder had been drained by it. This was something... experimental.. almost dangerous perhaps. And he was honored to be give the priviledge to be there from what appeard to be the begining.

Sabin handed his passport and the letter from Moreau to Aubrey, and gave her a toothy smile, mimicking the photograph in the little booklet.

Aubrey took the passport and looks between it and the man. Pretty distinctive, as Sabin has stark white hair, although his age was only listed as being 34. NOdding her approval, she handed the passport back and headed towards the door.

"Yes, there will be human subjects. Its pretty hard to test gene therapy otherwise. I mean, how else will we know if it works if we don't test it on human sujects?"

As she approached the door, she paused only momentarily before the doors slid open on their own. She has been genetically scanned, but to Sabin it might looks as simple as the sliding doors at the supermarket.

They Lobby at the main entrace was decked out pretty nice (mostly Aubrey's doing - it had looked to "cold" before). There were plush, expensive sofas, hardwood tables, and potted plants spread out over the marble floor.

"Dr. Moreau will know you're here. He should be down shortly. Feel free to take a seat." She motioned to the sofas, smiling politely.

Sabin smiled and tucked his passport back away as he entered the facility, his eyes never remaining still for a moment as they pored over the details - from the couches to the "sliding door".

"Welll..." Sabin drew out "Most scientists I know have to go through years of testing on bacteria... or eventually primates before ever touching a person.... Not that I'm arguing mind you!" he interjected quickly. "I agree that the medical benefits could be saving many lives" Sabin seemed to sound almost bored by that outlet "but instead are slowed down with 'standard procedures' and all that".

Sabin took a seat in one of the plush couches and smiled his thanks, his knee bobbing in anticipation to seeing Moreau again, and hearing what precisely his plans were - both with the island and these eventual subjects, and with Sabin himself.

"Well of course the Doctor has tested on bacteria and animals. And thats all well and good. But I mean, how are you susposed to KNOW if it will work on humans without trying it?

Of course all the serums are in their testing phase, so they are 100% safe. According to all the data, of course. But you can't be sure until you try!"

She sounded as if she was giving a pep talk of some kind.

Sabin gave a knowing smirk at Aubrey's "justification," deciding not to push it any further - but finding it amusing that she WAS justifying the reasonings behind holding at the very least semi-legal experiments on humans.

"Of course, and besides, seeing the results are where the most interesting stages of an experiment arise.... " Sabin found his eyes periodically wandering over the various doorways into the lobby, wondering just when Moreau would show...

After a decent wait Dr. Moreau bursts through the door, a man very much alive and full of energy. "Ahhhh Aubrey! I was working on the premise of a new chemical compound one that would allow us to splice... hold, what's this?"

Dr. Moreau stared at Sabin for a moment, as though he had completely no recongition, then after a moment, the smile crept back over his face. "Professor Sabin, glad to see you accepted my invitation. " Moreau moved his hand up to rub his chin a bit, as though he was absorbing the situation and thinking at the same time.

"Aubrey, why didn't you tell me that Professor Sabin was due today." Moreau said, fully well having been reminded multiple times and remembering those reminders. "Ahhh well, forgive her,"

"So," Moreau said sounding rather chipper about everything. "What do you think of my island? And," Moreau paused for a second the smile growing a bit more wicked "my research."

Aubrey smiled widely at Moreau when he came in, looking proud of herself for brining the professor. She was estatic to see him in one of his enthusiastic moods, and she found herself a little disappointed that the new test would be most likely delayed with Sabin's arrival.

Her glee was temporary, as Moreau expressed displeasure at her for her lack to remind him Sabin was due today. She knew he knew, he had even reminded her to meet him at the helipad and show him around. But she didn't say anything. She just diverted her gaze to the floor and turned a pinkish shade.
