Gone, It's All Gone...
In response to Sabin's removal of the supplies from the construction site, Gaius has a fit in front of Nita. She manages to comfort him with some drinks, and cuteness follows with a horsey-nuzzle!

Help Me Help You
Gaius seeks out Newt, trying to find an alternate tool source for the site, but is foiled as the labs have recently gotten to the frog and he's busy returning to his froggy janitorial duties. Even a pep talk is not enough to cheer up the little guy.

The next day, Gaius would find two white buckets sitting on his doorstep. The sides emblazoned with the characteristic Feral Labs logo were pointed toward the door, so that Gaius wouldn't be able to avoid seeing it. However, what would interest the pegasus wouldn't be what was on the buckets, but the fact that there is only one nail in each bucket. The rest of the nails? It appears someone carelessly scattered them next to the doorway in lumpy piles on the ground. It'll take while to find all the nails and scoop them up.

At least Zach gave the nails back...

Infinite Improbability

The pegasus blinked. And blinked again. It took his sleep-muddled brain a moment to process what was sitting there on his front step in the early morning sunlight.

Buckets. Two of them.

It clicked. "Ah! Hey, he actually came through... Thought the guy was going to lie or do something nasty..."

Vixen slipped past Gaius as he stepped forward to pick up the buckets, noticing as he did so the very visible logo. He gave an irritated snort, but didn't have long to dwell on it as he noticed something far more disturbing about the buckets. Namely, what was in them.

Practically nothing.

"Augh!" Gaius grabbed the nearest bucket, tipping it to himself to see if that was true. No, not completely empty. There was one small, rattling nail in it, and in the other. A frustrated groan escaped the would-be builder and he sank back on his haunches. That dragon had tricked him, then...

His eyes wandered to the porch around him, growing interested as he noticed the nails scattered about. It was interest colored with annoyance. Seemed the dragon had gone and dumped the buckets out all over the floor and down the stairs. He had little doubt they were in the grass below too.

"There's nothing for it," he sighed, "Just going to have to pick them up..."

So he began the long, tedious labor of picking up every nail and refilling the buckets. It was hard, each one had to be picked up individually, or very carefully in small bunches, for they were too sharp to grab in handfuls.

Gaius looked up in surprise as Vixen's wet nose nudged him as he crouched on the stairs. Looking down at her, she lifted her head to show what she had held carefully between her teeth. It was one of the nails, which she dropped with a toss of the head in his nearby bucket, and then the dog bounded back down the stairs and proceeded to pick up another, repeating the process. Gaius stared. Normal dogs didn't do that, did they? Come to think of it, they didn't fetch hammers or bottles either...

He cast a glance back at the bucket near his leg, at the blue logo painted on it. It was from the labs, just as Vixen was. Until now, he'd appreciated her company, needing it on some level he couldn't describe. That had allowed him to ignore the little quirks, the oddities in her behavior, writing them off as silly dog games. Like hiding his papers under the bed when she wanted to play, or moving her food dish onto the desk when she was hungry. Until now he'd thought them all innocent quirks, but now he wondered.

Why him, of all the islanders? And what was Vixen's purpose? Why'd she been in the labs anyways?

All these questions raced through Gaius' mind as he picked up the last of the nails from the grass and, both buckets in hand, returned to his duplex with his mystery-laden companion.

With a Cherry on Top?
Gaius swallows his pride and confronts a Sabin about the tools... and about Vixen

Gaius Harper
It had been long enough since his encounter with Zach for the labs to have taken action, at least as far as Gaius was concerned. They watched the islanders all the time, surely Sabin would have noticed? He'd sat tight, filling up his time with movies and more work with the few simple tools left him on Emelyn's chair, but his patience was stretching thin.

His eye wandered towards the intercom sitting on the wall, then away. Maybe he could just enquire... Maybe one of the middlemen would come down, unlock the door...

It wasn't that he needed the labs. He just needed his supplies, which the labs happened to have a monopoly on. It wasn't like he could go elsewhere for them. Not with his only source of alternative tools, Newt, so bullied into custodial work.

He'd had enough of it. The project was languishing without any attention. He needed the wood back in particular. Wiping the sawdust and glue from his hands, Gaius went to the intercom and dialed 0.

"I... need to talk to someone in the labs."

Sabin Duvert
"Congradulations. Labs speaking." Came a bored, unfamiliar feminine voice through the loudspeaker.

Gaius Harper
"Listen," Gaius started in an annoyed tone. "I did what that creep Sabin wanted, why is the supply room still locked?"

Sabin Duvert
There was a pause. "I'll see if Dr. Duvert is available." She responded, clearly not interested in whatever issue Gaius might have or what prank Sabin might have done.

Without waiting for a response, there was another click, and then the silence of dead air. A full two minutes later, Sabin's voice finally came through on the phone. "Ah, yes, Gaius. I had been expecting to hear from you. Finally decided to talk to me about your lack of tools I presume."

Gaius Harper
"What- no!" Gaius started as the woman began transfering him, but it was too late. He groaned inwardly as he stood in front of the unit. Sabin was one of the last people he wanted to deal with. His week had already been bad enough with the encounter with Zach.

"Yeah..." he hesitated. Well of course he was going to complain about it, what else did the man expect? "I went and apologized to your dragon," he stressed the possessive, "so why haven't they been returned?"

Sabin Duvert
"I heard this... "apology"." Sabin said wryly. "It did not sound like such a conventional apology to me. Not that I suppose I should have expected one. But there is more than one individual that deserves an apology for your behavior, Gaius."

Gaius Harper
The horse-man bristled on his end. "I admitted I was wrong for hitting him, I know that now. I kept my temper... mostly... in our arguement!"

He huffed in frustration and ran a hand back over his head before an idea occured to him. "You mean Emwy-... the deer girl, I already apologized to her and she forgave me. You can't hold that over me..."

Sabin Duvert
"But you do not regret it. You still refuse to spend any amount of time with Zachary without resorting to insults. At least, you are no longer hitting him. I suppose that that is one improvement." He said sarcastically. Sabin was not in the best of moods, and while he had been expecting Gaius to call, it was not exactly the best of times. There was a great deal on his mind.

"And I meant Me. I give you so much, Gaius. And you still insist on bantering about how you don't need the labs."

Gaius Harper
Sabin was right on a level, part of him didn't regret hitting Zach, but the feelings that had led him to hit the dragon, that had made him push Emerwyn down, and the consequences that followed, those he regretted.

"You only 'give' us everything because you don't give us the option to get it anywhere else. I have yet to see a Home Depot around here," he added with a sarcastic smirk. "I have nothing to apologize to you for. You're the one who keeps taking everthing from me!"

Sabin Duvert
"We don't have to give you anything! No, there is no home depot. And the materials do not materialize out of our generosity alone. I am the one who merely is giving you a dose of the reality of your situation. Pardon the irony of my statement. This is not America. This is not even the rest of the world. If we wanted we would be in our power to just lock everyone up in cages and poke at them. But instead, we give a community and a potential for a life. But do not forget where it comes from."

Gaius Harper
It was infuriating, just like the logos on the buckets Zach had 'returned'. He wanted to deny it, but couldn't. Face flushed, Gaius ground his teeth, wanting to yell at the man for his attitude, the inhuman treatment they received, the injustice of it all. But he'd been down that road before, lot of good it had done him. But again, despite it all, he couldn't control that tongue of his.

"It's not fair," he muttered. "I wonder if you'd be so keen on this imitation of 'life' you give us if you were in my place..."

Sabin Duvert
Sabin snorted indignantly. "I still maintain that you are not so bad off. I could whine and b***h about how even us in the labs are every bit as cut off from the rest of the world as you. And we still have to work. But I shall not. I could continue that while certainly the changes themselves are painful, that you are becoming something ever so much more than human. Something that most humans could only dream of. But I won't. I can also continue by expressing that it is in this community that you will find acceptance for what you are. That here is likely one of the only places in the world that appearences really do NOT matter. That everyone is judged based on who they are: their actions and who they want to be. Why is this island any less real, or less significant than any other town or city in the rest of the world? You certainly are spared no modern conveniences."

Gaius Harper
"Appearance..." Gaius muttered. Most of his arguement was true, but... and that was a very large but... What of Victor? That monster amongst freaks. Gaius shook his head. He couldn't bring him up, still too ashamed of his own reaction and disgust at the guy's appearance.

Gaius took a deep breath and sighed. It was no good, he was going to have to take his pride and swallow it.

"What..." he asked in a quieted voice, "do I have to do to get the supplies back?"

Sabin Duvert
Victor had been a ponderance recently for Sabin as well, and it was probably fortuante that Gaius didn't speak his anxiety aloud. He had even spoken briefly of Victor to Aubrey... a segue into an even more uncomfortable conversation.

Instead, Gaius asked a question that had some lovely possible answers. He was asking what he wanted him to do. Normally, this "offer" would have brought a positively devious smile to Sabin's face. Normally, a cruel or at least humiliating ploy against an islander was enough to give Sabin enough sadistic pleasure to feel better about something that was chapping him. However, this time, it didn't quite tingle that pleasure node. Not only did it contradict with what Sabin had just lectured him on.... but the bug chewing at him this time was particularly troublesome. For the first time in quite a while, Sabin was distinctly worried about his own future. And another first in too long of a time, Sabin was feeling.... guilty. Of all the horrible things he had put the islanders through, Sabin was VERY careful never to get personally attached to any of his "projects". He did NOT like having his hand forced to make a decision to do something cruel to someone that he liked. It brought up a side of him that more and more since his arrival on the island, Sabin was attempting to repress.

And so, when Gaius asked what needed to be done, he witnessed a rare glimpse of Sabin's sympathy. In a weary voice, Sabin finally responded. "I already told you Gaius. I want.... an apology. An honest one."

Gaius Harper
Gaius' ears twitched back, surprised in a way. "What, not going to ask me to grovel?" he asked jokingly, but quickly grew serious again.

It was weird, that tired voice. So often, when he heard it, it was condescending, angry, or wickedly delighted. What disturbed Gaius was... it sounded human, something he'd not wanted to connect with the staff. It made him uncomfortable, and made his black and white view of the world harder to maintain.

"Well, er..." He started awkwardly. Taking a moment, he cleared his throat, and staring at the intercom unity, spoke in a level voice. "I... I'm sorry for... denying that you, er, the labs are the source of everything we have... good and bad. I don't like it, I won't deny that, but for what it's worth, I'm sorry."

Sabin Duvert
Silence merely answered Gaius's initial sarcasm. Sabin was not in a mood for it. But he saw on the cameras that realiziation was spreading through him by his change in posture and expression. Sabin did not like tipping his hand, or even showing a human side to the subjects. It made things difficult on his end as well. He liked to maintain that distance, even between the subjects that had his own personal flaire to them. Sabin did not want to open himself to the guilt.

After his apology, there was more silence... for at time. He had gotten what he had asked. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair.

"Remember. The theater project that you are working on continues because we allow it. The materials that you need are provided by us. The community that is forming is doing so because we brought you together and we are providing the housing that you need. " It was another lecture, but it lacked the fire that Sabin's lectures were normally noted for.

"And remember, that regardless of differing opinions... you and Zachary are not too dissimilar. And you both seem to rankle each other to a mutual degree. You both "ask for it" as it were. And thus, if you wish to repair things - and I strongly encourage that you do.... it will take humility on both of your parts."

Gaius Harper
Gaius withstood the lecturing silently, his normally open face unusually still. It wasn't until the comparison between himself and Zach that he showed any change in expression, wincing as from a string. When he spoke, it was in a low voice, though it carried some of his familiar righteousness in it. "I'm nothing like your dragon... I'm still human, and proud of it." He paused, then added. "...But I'll try to avoid him, at least. I don't like our fights either."

Sabin Duvert
"Humanity.... is a broad term, Gaius. But... I am not in the mood for such a discussion tonight." Sabin responded curtly.

There was the sound of fingers on a keyboard, and a few moments, Sabin continued. "You might be pleased to note that the supply room is unlocked. But do not forget this conversation."

Gaius Harper
"Right..." Gaius said, fidgeting awkwardly now that what he'd aimed for had been accomplished. His eyes left the intercom, wandering back around his room, and happened upon the food dish sitting on his desk. Suddenly struck by a mix of curiosity and worry, Gaius turned back to the speaker.

"Er, before you go! It's about Vix... the dog. I have to know... why? Why me? Where'd she come from?" He waited anxiously. The questions had been buzzing around the back of his head the past weeks. If anyone could answer them, Sabin of all people could.

Sabin Duvert
With this... Sabin hesitated. He was fully aware of the significance behind the dogs. However, there was a lot of confidential information.

"Well..." He hesitated. "I am not the one... who coordinated their dispersal. But... I can say that they were given to islanders who we thought would not put the animals in danger - either by trying to eat them, or whose new lifestyles did not lend to a very terrestrial living. And of course, there was preference on those of you who have not tried to do anything particularly stupid. Vixen, and the others, were gifts. They were born here in the facility."

Gaius Harper
"Gifts?" Gaius scratched his head. "But you were just saying how the labs could easily just stick us in cages... why gifts? I mean, not that I don't appreciate Vixen. I like her very much... I'm just confused." And a little suspicious, but he didn't voice that part.

Sabin Duvert
"We could. And we do not. Again with my point that your lives are not as miserable here as many of you seek to say that they are." Sabin paused. "I was always fond of dogs myself. They needed good homes, and people who could care for them and not have to worry about real jobs that dogs could not attend."

Gaius Harper
"That's all well and good," Gaius said, frowning, "but still... I just don't understand why. Why'd you give us dogs from the labs? How many did you give out, anyways?"

Sabin Duvert
A frown tugged at his face. He was tiring of this conversation, not being in the mood for it from the begining.

"Aubrey would better answer your questions. But I will say that there were eight in total given out."

Gaius Harper
"A-Aubrey?" Gaius asked. He'd heard that name before somewhere... Ambrose? Damn, that'd been months ago. "Alright then... And, er..." He shifted awkwardly, fighting with himself. "Thanks.. for the tools and stuff."

Sabin Duvert
Sabin nodded, though the gesture was meaningless without the screen turned on for Gaius's benefit.

"Yes, Dr. Aubrey Lockheart. She is another staffmember, though... she is currently not available. But you might try to reach her again at some other point."

Another pause, and then finally... "You are welcome."

Gaius Harper
After an awkward pause, Gaius clicked the disconnect button. Considering the interaction he'd mentally prepared for, this had been far from it.

There were parts of the conversation he would never breath to anyone else. Not ever. But, at least now he had his precious supplies back... and a whole new set of information to wonder over. And with that, more questions.
PostPosted: Thu Feb 01, 2007 8:41 pm

Gaius's 50% stage was never the most... comfortable of stages. A neck too long and thick, long, spindly legs that could barely support him without a lot of practice, and not so much looking like a horse as much as a malproprotioned individual with vaguely equine-reminiscient qualities.

And on the Island of Moreau, the good tends to linger only for a short while. The supplies were available again, but hardly a day later, Gaius awakes suddenly with a familiar itchy lump on the back of an arm... and a spreading itch over a large part of his body. And despite his shaving habits, his facial hair has grown in thick overnight, matched with an amazing amount of dark growth anywhere else body hair is commonly found. And it only gets worse. Itchily. His legs over the course of the afternoon become swallowed in the short, thick black fur.. all the way up to his waist. Over his back, his shoulders, his lower arms, and the "beard-area". Additinally, your mane and tail fill out, becoming thicker, with a bit of a wave. Then, as if inspired by the hair, much thicker, more painful pinions begin to spot your wings as they stretch a bit longer, more powerful... but not without the cost of aching muscles and bones as they physically grow. Your toenails and fingernails harden and blacken, and especially in your toes seem to begin to fuse together, several of your toes apparently swallowed up into one continuous mass. With a much more painful, detrimental portent, your ring fingers and middle fingers likewise fuse... all of your digits shortening somewhat as your fingernails also harden and blacken and grow.

Your ears stretch longer, pointing up further to the top of your head, and finally, the ultimate headache - literally, your sinuses complain loudly as your face grinds forward, lengthening even more until your face shape is hardly even recognisable as having once been human.

~Insert Nightmare Here~

The morning was still young when Gaius rolled half-awake from bed. Mumbling and scratching at an itchy patch on his arm, he made his way zombie-like to the bathroom, avoiding stepping on the dog sprawled beside the bed.

Turning on the light switch, Gaius blinked until his tired eyes adjusted to the brightness. Catching his reflection in the mirror, he frowned. His facial hair, normally sparse and stubbly after only a day of growth, had grown in thick and black overnight. He scratched at the itchy beard that trailed down a bit of his neck, and up to where his ears had once been beside his jaw. Shrugging, he stripped off his boxers and hopped in the shower. The warm water was more refreshing than normal. He hadn’t noticed it before, but he’d been slightly itchy all over, like he had a light sunburn. Inspection showed no such burn, but his hair did seem thicker all over, but that might have been a trick of the water.

The next half hour was spent shaving off his beard-growth, which proved a challenge, but he managed with only a little nick on his chin, which a bit of cotton fixed. Smooth-jawed once again, Gaius fetched his clothes, casting a glance at the shirts as he pulled on some pants. For a moment he considered, then decided against them. He was feeling kinda hot today, he’d be fine without the shirt.

He gave a sharp whistle, rousing Vixen from her sleep, and the horse-man and his companion left the duplex to take care of the morning’s business.

It was, with out argument, one of those mornings. The type of morning that no matter how many showers you take, you're going to feel gross. Thats the terrible thing about humidity; and the lumbering rain clouds over head didn't help much. If any thing they just made the situation that much more unbearable.

Marshall, however, didn't seem to notice the crappy weather. He had a Sharpie in his pocket and a smirk on his face as he climbed the stairs to his friend's duplex. He had a lot to tell him; finding and apologizing to Sophie, making up with Oz.

I gotta start visiting more. he thought as he knocked on the door with his flipper-hand.
