Everything seemed fuzzy, like some kind of dream. Awen remembered the start a little more than the rest....but even that was shakey.

It had been a normal day, or as normal as the island got anyway, the sun was out after a slight rainstorm the day before. She was up and out for a morning swim through the rivers, as was becoming her daily practice. Awen's back and sides had been hurting for a few days and she just hoped she wasn't getting a cold. Could manta rays get colds anyway? She had certainly hoped that it wouldn't be an issue, she just needed a little more exercise, that's all.

So it was like any other day. Swimming thought the rivers, circling the lake, enjoying herself despite the ache in her back and sides getting worse. It was when she was in a small cave-like crevace at the bottom of the lake that the pain suddenly stabbed into her chest. She lurched in the water as she felt her heartbeat quicken.

The slits in the sides of her throat that passed for gills started to burn and ache like everything else. She itched all over with the burning that was getting progressively worse. What was worse, she couldn't breathe. This hadn't happened before, not in the clear lake water. She remembered something like it when she had tried to swim off the island, but it was not the same. It wasn't drowning persay but her gills refused to work as everything burned and tightened around her. Awen's head started to feel fuzzy and she pushed herself out of the cave and struggled towards the surface.

This time she made it out into the air. As she broke the surface of the water she tried to take in a large gulp of air through her mouth, to no effect. Her eyes widened as she tried to take in breath after breath, but nothing worked, her lungs didn't respond. The panic that had so quickly risen was just as quickly fading away. She couldn't concentrate, she was dizzy. Awen latched herself onto a half submerged log nearby as tears rolled down her cheeks.

Then a loud sound, a cloud of dust. Awen hear splashes in the water and saw men in some kind of staff uniform racing towards her. She didn't care at that point though..... it was just so much nicer to....close her eyes.

When she awoke next everything seemed blurry. She couldn't quite see properly as she slowly tilted her eyes from side to side. She saw labcoats swirling around the room, but she couldn't focus on them as they trailed in her vision. There were lots of people.... Awen vaguely wondered why all these lab techs were by the lake.

"Don't tell me you don't know." A voice filled her ears, a sweet voice she remembered. If it were not for the pain still lingering in her lungs, gills and mind she may have smiled. "Just find out what's wrong with the girl."

Wrong? Something was wrong...and they didn't know? The edge of panic wanted to creep up and set her racing. She rolled her head to the side just barely in time to see Sabins face set in a frown as he turned and walked out of the room. The frown held no compassion, no worry for Awen, the person, only apprehension for Awen, the experiment, failing. It may have been Awen's hazy sight, or wishful imagination, but it was in Sabin's eyes she thought she saw the hidden concern. Rather than think about it more the room turned bright white....and then blackness again.

That was all she really remembered, aside from the scattered memories of needles, tubes, shocks and an ever clinging pain. Awen shifted in the water around her and opened her eyes. looking around she realised she was in a place she didn't recognise. There were solid walls all around except for a large glass or plastic one to her left. It seemed to have a sort of door worked in by the edge as it lead into the lake.

Looking up Awen saw nothing more than a ceiling that looked like her duplex. She swam for the surface and looked around. It was a duplex. Though most of the area was reserved for the large waterpool that lead to the lake there was a dry area with a table and a few chairs, a dresser and Awen's entertainment system.

The manta climbed from the pool and found a towel on a small rack near the edge. She dried herself off before stepping onto the carpet of the dry part.

What had happened? How long had it been? Where exactly was she? All these questions passed through her mind but were silenced for the last question. Where was the food?

Her stomach empty Awen opened the door and headed out into the sun, off in search of food.

Three months!?

Rachel found herself jogging outside of the village a couple days after her first encounter with some of the island's other residents. She had holed up in her room for a little while after that, trying to get her bearings after being told her true fate and recovering from her fainting episode. Only coming out for two tiny meals, Rachel started to get cooped up and her obsessed mind continued to poke at her, reminding her that she hadn't exercized since she'd been here.

She had intended on resting a day longer, but couldn't take it anymore, and Rachel now came upon the edge of a decent sized lake. Already having jogged for quite a while, exploring the island, she decided to take a break, sitting down on one of the larger rocks at the water's edge.

The girl wasn't the only one near the lake, though the other presence was of a mind to go swimming.

Shenzi had her mismatched swimsuit on again, with a pair of white, green, and blue plaid booty shorts on top, multiple necklaces of varying colors of mardi gra beads around her neck. She was floating on the surface, moving her hands in slow angel motions to keep herself floating, the drawstrings from her shirts bobbing on the surface even as her necklaces sunk or floated, held on by her neck. Her blue hair wasn't as vivid in the crystal blue of the lake water, but the blueberry didn't notice.

Awen sighed as she traced back to the lake. It had been a long day so far and she still hadn't got reaquainted with everything. Her flippers hurt some and her legs seemed a bit wobbley, she was definately not in shape as she used to be. Though she was relatively certain she'd lost some weight.

The question of how long it had been since she'd passed out in the lake still nagged her. She scoffed and shook her head grumbling about it. "It's like Moreau doesn't believe in calenders or something."

She brow knit as she approched the woman sitting on the rock from behind. Glancing over to the lake when she saw movement Awen also noticed another in the water. She half smirked when she saw the blue hair but then noted both islanders were unchanged. Awen only hoped that she wouldn't be the first changed one they would have seen.

"Good afternoon." She said trying to sound cheery.

At first, Rachel had thought herself to be alone, and just took in the scenery. In it's own way, the thick foliage surrounding the lake reminded her of the forests around Prince Rupert, where she had spent most her life before the island. Her brow creased slightly as she thought of home, starting to feel a wave of sadness approaching as she thought of home.

She was distracted from her thoughts, however, when she heard a small splash come from the lake. Turning her gaze towards the direction of the sound, Rachel noticed another person floating on the water. They didn't seem to look unusual, aside from the fact that her hair appeared blue. Was she a new person like herself?

Rachel barely had time to think about it before a voice came from behind her, startling her slightly. She turned to look at the person who had spoken and her eyes opened a little bit wider as she took in the sight of Awen. It was going to be a while before she got used to the people here not looking well...normal. Clearing her throat slightly before speaking, Rachel offered a small smile to the woman.

"Hi..." she said quietly from where she sat. "I'm Rachel."

Shenzi looked up towards the overhang as she heard voices, two women apparently. She could see black hair bobbing with movement, and a long braid, before her low angle cut off anything else.

Flipping onto her back, she started paddling towards the shore, and her waiting towel. Wrapping it around her shoulders, her shorts damp and dripping, bits of purple from her bikini bottom showing through, she slid on her flip flops before walking up towards the other two. Shenzi stopped halfway up though when she got a good look at the two.

One was human enough, brown skin, black hair, but she had a gaunt looking face, and looked older then Shenzi. The other woman... Blue hair. That was the first thing she noticed. Then her eyes went to the rest of her, taking in the animalistic appearance. Frowning to herself, she steeled herself, continuing her forward pace and letting a friendly smile show on her face, just as something Newt had mentioned before clicked in, about blue hair. "Are you Awen?"

An apologetic look came to the manta's face seeing the reaction. "Didn't mean to startle you. I'm-" She was cut off by the other blue haired woman approching.

The question caught her offgaurd and she shifted on her feet. A brow rose quizzically as she spoke tentatively. "Um... yes I am." Awen wondered who had told the other girl about her. Who would care enough to talk about her... aside from the gossip of a few certain islanders.

She left a smile ease to her face as Awen realised it could have just been someone saying there is another one with blue hair on the island. Or so she would assume and hope for now. "Awen Zyn, pleased to meet you both."

Rachel turned her head as the Awen look up, and saw the woman who had been swimming approaching. Well it turned out she was right about the blue hair. Odd that she should meet two people with hair that color, but she had certainly seen more unusual things than that in the past few days. The skinny girl nodded her head in recognition as Awen introduced herself.

"Nice to meet you as well," she commented, before turning to the other woman, with a slightly raised eyebrow.

"And you are?"

Shenzi grinned, dipping down in a mock-courtly bow, one foot poised on the toe. "I'm Kamila Thomson, though I prefer Shenzi. Newt mentioned you briefly." She said, having noticed the quick expression of confusion. "That you were another blue hair. Which already gives you points in my book." Shenzi laughed softly; her accent bled through lightly, not immediatly noticeable.

Sitting down on a rock, she started towelling her hair vigorously, while looking up at the two with wet straggles of it falling in her eyes. Her shorts were already starting to dry from the tropical humidity. "So how long have you two been here?" She asked, even as she thought about the fact that she asked the same of everyone.

A broad grin stole onto Awens lips as she confirmed that the mention of her wasn't a bad thing at all. Last she saw Newt she was teaching him how to swim. Awen wondered if she managed any better these days. He said he would practice more.

"I've been here...." Awen paused at the question and frowned. "Last I checked it was close to a year.... but that was in August..." Biting her lip Awen wondered again how long she'd been in the labs. She's known islanders to go in for a few hours, a few days or even months. "But I'm...er not really sure at the moment." She tried to brush it off with a chuckle.

Rachel shifted uneasily. Already the conversation had turned to the nature of the island, although she knew she should have expected that. She had been trying not to think about it too much the past couple of days, having succeeded in other people after that early morning encounter, until now.

She blinked in surprise when Awen told them that she'd been there around a year. Rachel knew that she would be here at least that long as well, but at the moment, being stuck here that length of time seemed unfathomable. She winced inwardly, thinking about Emelyn, knowing the woman must have been here at least that long.

"I've only been here a couple of days," Rachel responded, as she looked at Shenzi. "You can't have been here very long either by the look of you," she continued.

Shenzi thought of Chana, who had said she'd been here at least that long. "Do you know Chana, then?" She asked, rubbing the towel up and down her arms before putting it back around her shoulders.

"Mm, a little over three weeks, I think..." Shenzi said, adding the dates up in her head. "Yeah, three weeks, give or take." She shoved away the thought that it wouldn't be long now, before her first change. Richard was fine, and he had already changed once. Hell, Awen was fine, and she'd been here longer then anyone she'd met, besides Chana.

Awen was fine indeed, after spending a few months in the labs for observation and recovery. From what she didn't know and unlike she'd hoped neither woman said what day it was now. She had hoped they'd clear it up but appearently not.

She nodded slow hearing both of their responses. "Well, it's good to see you both adjusting well enough." She nodded and smiled. "I thought I was halusinating for awhile, other people get angry and start yelling.... heh Avery almost had a mental breakdown about it. My only advice is try to enjoy yourselves." She gave an encouraging look to Rachel mostly. "Honestly, the changes aren't all that bad. A lot of people end up gaining useful skills and abilities. I tell you... there is nothing in the world like gliding through these rivers and lakes, faster than I'd ever thought possible." She started to smile in a dreamy sort of way just thinking about it. Awen bobbed her head a bit and snapped back to reality. "It's not all bad, honest."

"Oh, and yeah I know Chana. Haven't seen her in ages.... not since...." Awen squinted trying to recall when it was. Chairs outside the duplex, and someone else...who had just changed. Avery maybe? It had been awhile ago but.... "Ah, not since just after my last change. When I had the IV?" The last part was added mostly to try to confirm the memory to herself and then she nodded. "Yeah, awhile ago anyway."

Rachel flushed slightly and looked down at the ground as Awen described her first reaction to finding out the truth about the island. "At least you didn't faint..." she said very quietly, and mostly to herself.

As Awen continued speaking, she wondered what kinds of abilities she would gain, if what the woman said was true. Maybe she could do a different kind of gymnastics. The water sounded like a wonderful environment for that, but Rachel didn't even know what she was turning into yet. She hadn't gotten the guts to call the labs. She tried to smile a little, hoping that there would be at least a few nice things devloping from this twist of fate.

"So neither of you were at the halloween dance, then." She stated; it was half question, half plain fact. "Generally, you're gonna adjust once you see a frog man, a beaver woman, and get knocked half off your feet by a tantacle." The teenager said, with a sarcastic raise to her eyebrow and a small, crooked grin.

"Dunno who Avery is. I've only met a small handfull of people here." Shenzi said with a small shrug of her shoulders.

"Halloween dance?" Awen said her expression saddened. She had been looking forward to the labs hosting another party like last year. And she missed it? But, halloween was her favourite time of year. Her brow furrowed as she mumbled "At least a month..." to herself.

She sighed a bit and scratched the back of her neck. "Ah..." She chuckled a bit despite her growing urge not to. "So you've met Billy?" She hoped the man wasn't as erratic as the last time Awen had seen him. If she recalled correctly he tried to kill her then.

She smiled over to Rachel. "If I hadn't been laughing at myself for being dellusional I may have done just that."

She waved her hand to clear the air. "But enough of this depressing talk, ya? It's a beautiful day, the air is clean just relax and enjoy the paradise. and if either of you like video games I've got myself a Play Station 2, a Game Cube and an Xbox 360 in my duplex. There's plenty of books to read, movies to watch and even an arcade. Just.... think of it as a vacation."

Rachel brightened a bit at the change of topic. She didn't have much experience with video games, never really having time for them, but any subject was better than the one they had just been discussing. Awen had also mentioned books. Rachel wondered if there were any on folklore. She loved reading about things like that.

"A vacation? Hmmm....I suppose I could try to do that. I just wish I had somewhere to practice my gymnastics. I know I won't be able to go back to my team, but it's just something I love to do."

"Not quite a month. I got here a few days before halloween, and it's been maybe two and a half weeks since the dance." Shenzi supplied helpfully, though she grew a look of puzzlement at the name mentioned. "Who's Billy? I havn't met a Billy. The tentacle guy's name is Richard." She frowned uncertainly as she said this.

"Well, they might have a gym or something..." Shenzi said uncertainly, looking to Awen. She'd seen the arcade and cafeteria, as well as the duplexes, but not much else of the village.

"But a game sounds fun. Which ones do you have?" Though she wasn't a hardcore gamer, Ed and Banzai sometimes played the xbox when they spent the night at each other's houses, so she knew some of what it was and how to play.

Awens eyes widened a bit. It's halfway through November! She'd been out since.... lets see midway August, September, October, November. Three months? She shook her head slowly. Must have been something really wrong. Especially since she had momentarily forgotten that September came after August and not October. She'd always gotten her months mixed up though anyway.

"Richard? So there's another octopus on the island? I hope he's a nice guy at least. And uh, I think theres a gym." She half grinned and looked at Rachel. "But it's more like a workout room I think.... I never really go because...well... swimming is best for me." She nodded a bit and turnedher attentio back to Shenzi. "Lots, too many to name at the moment" Her grin grew some more.

"Hmm....I'll have to look for it, thought I doubt it'll have the type of space or equipment I need." Not to mention I doubt they'd let me do my gynmastics, she added to herself. She knew better than to assume that simply because her reasons for coming here were false, that the medical staff here wouldn't be keeping an eye on her. Rachel had experienced high levels of monitoring the last time she had been treated, and she didn't expect anything different from these people, even if their methods were different. That included the way they viewed her health, even though Rachel persisted in beliving that she was just fine.

The other girls continued to talk, as Rachel thought. She didn't know any of the people they were talking about, and didn't have a great deal of interest in the video games, but she tried to keep a polite level of attention to the conversation.

"Erm, well, I don't know if he's an octopus or not... The tentacles made me think squid, but he had these two things coming from his sides at the halloween party, I'm not sure what they were." She explained, nodding at her statement about the gym. "Wish I knew what I'll be, but at the same time I don't..." Shenzi said, laughing nervously.

"Would make sense for them to have a balance bar, at least. I mean, they're turning us into animals, the least they can do is provide equipment, right?"

Awen shurgged her shoulders. "Not sure." She said simply before glancing at the lake. It had been three months since she'd been able to jet through the waters... the manta thought that was much too long, and Awen couldn't agree more.

"But if you ladies will excuse me. I'm going to go for a swim." She smiled and waved. "I'll see you around okay? Come see me anytime in duplex twen... er.... oh right. I just recently changed duplexes so I don't remember the number.... but it's one of the ones that connects with the waters." She smiled and waved before making her way to the waters edge.

As the cool water slowly envelopped her body her heart jumped. It had been much too long.

"I suppose..." Rachel said uncertainly, in response to Shenzi's comment about Moreau and company providing equipment. She hadn't spoken to any of the doctors since she arrived and didn't feel comfortable enough with her surroundings to approach them with anything. There was also the fact that Rachel feared what their answers would be.

The dark-haired girl gave Awen a small wave as she headed towards the water. It did look a bit inviting. Rachel couldn't remember the last time she had been swimming, partly because she didn't like having that much skin exposed in front of other people. Maybe she would come back later, when no one else was around.

Shenzi nodded to both of them, giving Awen a quick wave before the woman dove into the water, quickly disappearing under the surface. Letting off a sigh, she slid down the incline, back to the water's edge. Dropping her towel on the sand, she made a running dive into the water. She needed to keep up her excercises, be it a tropical island or not. No one wanted to see a fat, a**-shaking singer on stage in the usual stuff Shenzi wore.

Awen strolled into the cafeteria and glanced around. The decorations, the food, oh they had mashed potatoes and was that corn pudding? Awen grinned as she walked up to the feast tables and just took in the scents.

Awen laughed lightly when she saw the live turkey marked with a 0. "Subject experiment zero? Amusing." She smirked and shook her head.

Awen furrowed her brow slightly. But why now? This looks like Thanksiving stuff, but that was montsh ago. Awen had thought she'd missed Thanksiving....

She shrugged and grabbed a plate, starting to pile on all the extras, and even started in on the deserts. It was her normal habit, grabbing everything in one plate and then having a seperate for the meat. She snagged another plate and started to search for the turkey. She hadn't noticed it on the other tables so she wandered nearer to the live turkey. But she found nothing. She frowned and found nothing but the poor thing on the table. She turned and went back to the others, maybe she'd missed the turkey plates?

But no. There was nothing. It was then that Awen's eyes shifted away from the tables of food and the turkey sitting apon the center one. She heard noises from around the cafeteria and saw other turkey with tags starting to roam out from under the regular tables. Two sauntered out from behind the counters that lead to the kitchen and Awen stared dumbfounded.

They have to hunt their own turkey. Awen smirked a little bit and shook her head and laughed. "God, do they never rest?"

Awen wasn't annoyed or offended at all, in her year of being on the island she'd started to share the sense of humour she found in the labs. Not all of them, mind, she was still morally against the entire island itself.... but she could appreciate the irony in some things, or even be amused with some of the antics and presentations the labs give. She couldn't help but chuckle at this new trick. Either laugh or cry right? But perhaps it was more than that... maybe some trickle of her, while trying to make the best of the bad situation, was starting to fully enjoy the island, the lab tech's humour? Naw couldn't be.

She shook her head and headed out of the cafeteria. Taking her plate with her she decided she'd rather not be around when the other islanders discovered the free range turkies around. She'd go eat her food by the lake probably....

As she pushed open the door to leave it occured to her. "Oh.... it's the US's Thanksgiving...."

Turkey Day

Amaya had no idea it was even Thanksgiving. All she knew what that it was nearing Christmas, a holiday she had chosen to loathe here on Hell Island. She wondered what kind of gag gift she'd get this year...

As she got dressed and stepped out onto her front patio something very strange caught her yellow and brown gaze. Two turkeys with tags hooked to their wings stutted along outside her duplex pecking at the ground. She stared for a few moments before sighing.

"It's Thanksgiving, isn't it?" Poor turkeys.

The teen walked back into her duplex and grabbed some left over veggies and water, putting the water into a dish before walking outside. She set the food on the ground near both of them and watched them start to peck away.

She watched them for a moment before sitting down in front of them, a long hand reaching out to pet down their soft feathers. If they stayed out here they were bound to get eaten... which was probably the lab's intentions.

Awen, with her plate of food still in hand, was making her way towards the lake when she spotted the green girl walking from her duplex with a dish of water and some veggies. Tilting her head as the bowl was set down and a hand went to stroke the birds Awen sighed.

Of course there would be some islanders who would do this. Awen had herself thought of saving at least the turkey with her duplex number--er well her old duplex number as she hadn't seen any with SD1 on it or any other special duplex number.

She was of course, glad to see an old friend.... though she had changed drastically.

"Amaya!" She called and started towards her duplex. "Long time no see."

The lizard girl hadn't noticed Awen until her name was shouted; her hearing ability having gone down substantially. Blinking, she turned her head around and cocked it to the side to spot someone who she hadn't seen in... months? She couldn't even remember if Awen had seen her... complete.

But regardless she gave her friend a little reptilian smile and headbobbed, only speaking once the older girl got closer. "Hi Awen." She said, her voice barely above a whisper. She was rather surprised to see that she hadn't changed since the last time they met. "Where've you been?"

She stayed crouched down by the two fat, flightless birds to pet them. She had always wanted a pet.

"Ah..." Awen crouched down to give the other turkey a little attention too and gave an awkward smile. "Not entirely sure to be honest. Somewhere in the labs...I think? Appearently there were complications.. haven't figured what they were haven't had the nerve to contact the labs.... I've been out since mid August I think... kind of a shock not to remember the last three months of your life." She shook her head with a chuckle and snatched her corn on the cob munching on it some.

Glancing up and down Amaya for a closer inspection she smiled. "I guess you don't have anymore changes then? I mean unless things have changed in the past while I don't think Colche or Pyroth have changed since their forth?" Her brow drew in concerned. "But what happened to your voice? Are you sick?"

Amaya nodded slowly up and down as she filled her in. At least Awen was safe and not sick anymore. Though at the swerve in topic she frowned and looked down. Talking about her changes now were harder than they had been when she changed the first time... Because now she knew this was where it ended. This was how she was going to stay for the rest of her life.

"Ah... yeah. I'm done." She said sadly, staring at the turkey in front of her. The girl then swallowed and hesitantly reached up to her throat, but didn't touch it. Instead her hand fell back ontop of the white dress that covered her lap. "It's been like this since..." She trailed off. "... Yeah."

"Oh... I see. Sorry to hear it hun..." She reached over and set a webbed hand ontop of the scaley one of her friend. "But hey, I think you still look very pretty." Switching from her soft comforting tone Awen tried to get the convorsation back to other things And that dress is so nice! New is it?"

"What do you think of this whole loose turkey thing?" She pat the backs of each turkey in turn. "Getting a couple new pets, I assume?"

At that the girl smiled. She didn't hear that often or... ever, really. Most of the time people avoided it or just didn't say anything. Everytime she looked in the mirror it was like she thought less and less of herself as the days went by. It didn't help that she knew (or rather assumed) that her looks were the reason Alec didn't like her.

"Yeah." She said, having not worn this one as much as her others. Amaya tried not to think of how dresses were the only thing she could wear, or her real reason for getting them - being mistaken for a guy too many times.

Her head bobbed up and down a few times in sucession. "I don't wanna keep 'em out here, someone or something'll eat 'em." She said, still petting them as they pecked at the old vegtables.

It was nice to see Amaya smile. Every time Awen had seen the girl since she started changing the manta couldn't recall seeing a smile smirk or grin grace the lips of the lizard.

To Awen mistaking Amaya for a guy was proposterous, but perhaps she'd been around the island too much, or known the girl for too long to make that mistake....

The blue headed girl nodded slowly. "Probably should take them inside then, at some point.... but that might get rather uncomfortable for you to have them in there." She made and awkward yet thoughtful face as she tried to reason a way around the turkey mess in Amaya's duplex. Her own was out of the question, the dumb things would probably drown themselves by falling into the pool and not being able to get out.

"I think I'm gonna tie them up outside and bring 'em in at night. It'll still be kinda messy, but it's not like cleaning up after them will be much of a hassle. Not much else to do." Amaya gave another little smile. Maybe having something to look after would make her a little happier.

Awen nodded and smiles brightly. "That sounds like a plan actually." She suddenly grinned. "Oh! By the way, I'm not in my old duplex anymore. I've been moved over to Special Duplex #1, it's part of the cluster of duplexes by the lake... The majority of it is a big pool connected to the lake, pretty neat actually."

"Special Duplex number one?" Amaya repeated, looking up at her. She raised a nonexistant brow. "A pool? But... how is that a duplex?" She asked, confused. "Does it still have a bed and stuff?"

Awen grinned a little bit. "Well, there's a dry part with my bathroom, table chairs and all my video games, dresser and such.... But I haven't really slept in a bed since my last change..." Awen scratched oner her eye idley. "I've been pretty much sleeping in a tank for the past while... this isjust lots more comfortable."

"Ohhh..." Amaya said, yellow eyes looking up at her. Her head cocked to the side sharply in reptilian fashion to look back at the two fat turkeys. Alec would probably have to live in one of them soon... she frowned and sighed.

For now she didn't mention him. She hopped he was okay...

Awen tilted her head a bit at the frown. "Is everything alright Amaya?" She looked down at the turkey were the reptile had last looked. "Ah, don't worry about the rest of them.... not much worse than back home on Thanksgiving you know..."

"No... it's not them I'm worried about." Amaya said as she stood up, her five-foot-long tail trailing and sliding behind her to keep her balanced. "It's just... I know someone who's becoming a shark. He lost his legs already."

Yellow gaze traveled back to Awen. "I'm scared he's gonna be stuck in a tank forever like a fish. If he is than... I don't know what to do." She trailed off, looking just as sad as before. It seemed the girl was rarely happy.

That fact struck Awen as odd. As far as Sabin had told her she was the first aquatic islander, she hadn't lost her legs. Had someone surpassed her in growth since she'd been under? But no, it didn't sound like it, it sounded like he still had more changes. A shark...? Who could....

Alec. Her convorsation came back to her as Sabin had named off the other aquatic islanders. She frowned slightly and put a hand on Amaya's shoulder.

"I don't know...." She sighed and glanced down at her own legs. Why had she kept them when Alec was loosing them? "Amaya... he probably won't be stuck in a tank. There's the aquatic duplexes that lead to the lake... and you'd be surprised how much room there is in all the rivers, so it's not like he'd be trapped anymore than anyone else on the island. Besides... I'm sure the labs would provide....something for him to get around on land with."

Thought she wasn't sure. She hadn't thought of being stuck in the lake since her second change. She'd kept her legs this long and doubted, the way others like the two snake people- their names lost in a jumble of thoughts- were losing theirs progressively. "It'll be okay Amaya..."

Although she had mentioned it to others, no one had ever really been as comforting as Awen was right now. Normally she didn't even say that much - she thought it was rude to just keep spreading the fact that he no longer had his legs. But she was worried and scared. Scared that soon she would be down a friend, and more, once he was stuck in the water. She couldn't even go into the water for that long because it was so cold.

It was like the staff had cursed both of them to be on opposite sides. A wall seperated them and always would. They were taking everything she had from her even now that she would never change again. They couldn't scare her physically... so now they were mentally.

Her shoulders bobbed and her mouth knitted into a deep frown. "No it won't..." She said sadly, sniffling and crying tearlessly.

Scooting the turkey aside for now Awen moved close to Amaya and wrapped her webbed arms around the poor girl. "It will Amaya... Things will work out... I mean... I'm still breathing air right? They'll work things out in the labs I'm sure. Maybe a wheelchair or something... I mean they customised a PSP to fit the water for me and really a wheelchair to fit an aquatic wouldn't be that hard I'm sure."

Amaya just shook her head and held her huge muzzle between her long hands, her eyes hidden. She sniffed, shoulders continuing in their bobbing. She was hesitant to tell the older girl how she felt about him, still feeling rather ashamed that Alec hadn't returned her feelings.

"Shh...Shhh..." Awen held the lizard close to her and rubbed her back softly. "Amaya..things will be alright... I know it's not the best...far from... but it's the best for this island... we get the best stuff concidering we're all animals. Alec will be fine, don't worry, I'll talk to the labs for you and him, alright? See what can be done...?"

The lizard girl just nodded and wipped her eyes on reflex despite not being able to shed tears anymore. "'Kay..." She sniffed. "I called for a w-wheelchair for him before I left. He wanted to b-be alone." She said, still sniffling occasionally.

"I kn-know that he doesn't like me how I like him, but I'm still scared that I'll loose him as a friend too." She finally confessed, unable to hold back her emotions. "I haven't seen a lot of people in a long time. They could even be dead and I wouldn't know it. Chubbs and Hargun an-and Greer..." She trailed off, letting out a sob.

"It's like even when I made myself a family here they t-take them away from me. L-Like they'll never let me have the only thing I want."

Awen it her lip at the words. It seems she still had the good life, by comparison, even on the island here. "I'm sure they're fine.... you know how the island gets sometimes... people want to be alone sometimes, right? Amaya, you won't loose him, you haven't lost anyone yet, they'll come back eventually. I'm here for you when you need me too hun..."

Amaya just sniffed and looked up at her. She couldn't think of anything more to say. All she could do was stare with dry reptilian eyes before bursting into more sobs. Scaley arms reached around Awen's waist under her webbing, her maw tilting and burying itself into her chest.

She just stayed there, sobbing.

Awen just held the young girl close to her rubbery flesh. She couldn't even muster the courage to tell her it would be alright, so Awen held her girl tightly. Closing her eyes softly she would stya there as long as Amaya felt she needed.

Amaya would sob for what felt to her hours, though it was probably only about five minutes. Slowly her crying stopped and soon she was just laying there, hugging Awen with her head in her chest.

Eventually she pulled away to sit up. "Thanks..." She said, unable to really meet her gaze.

"Amaya.... no need for thanks. Have to be there for one another, right?" She smiled and sat up herself. Glancing over she noticed the turkey have completely cleaned her plate of food and she shook her head a big. "This will be an interesting next couple of days anyway, eh?"

Amaya nodded and then stood up. "Make sure they don't go anywhere?" She asked, looking at Awen. "I'm gonna find something to tie them up with." And with that she turned and headed off the path into her duplex.

After a few moments of rummaging around she came back out with two shoelaces that had been from a pair of shoes she hadn't been able to wear since he first change over a year ago. She handed one to Awen. "I figure I'll tie them to a loose leash and keep them tied to my door during the day."

She started to make a loose loop to slip over one of the turkey's neck, going slower than what would be normal because of her less than nimble fingers and claws.

Awen nodded and smiled standing up as Amaya did. It wasn't very hard to keep the turkey around in the time it took the reptile to snag shoelaces.

"Seems to be a good plan to me Amaya." She smiled warmly and helped with the other turkey's neck.

She shook her head and picked up the plate. "Oh it's no big deal, there's plenty more food there, and only one special person that needed my attention." She smiled softly. "Good to see you again Amaya, hopefully it will be more often now that I'm back..."

She looked at the empty plate and then turned a bit towards the cafeteria. "But I'll see you later, alright?"

The girl managed a tiny, slightly forced smile and headbobbed. "Yeah... I'll see ya around." Then she turned and headed into her duplex, tieing both shoelaces to her doorknob.

Misplacer Beast

There were few things that depressed Richard more than thanksgiving. Usually he did everything possible to be out of the US on the holiday if at all possible. Because it was thanksgiving that he felt the most alone. After Erica's death he had managed to burn all his bridges with her family, while his own simply died out. He had been an only child and after his folks passed away he had no one.

Back home he would just make sure he was working on reporting something but here there was no avoiding it. He might have just stayed in his duplex today if it hadn't been for the food. Grumbling, He had grabbed a tray, piled it high and sulked out to the fishing spot. Normally he would chuckle at the lab's little "joke." But it meant there was no meat available which although he really hadn't cared for turkey he found himself disapointed.

So Richard found himself sitting on a rock by the river, shoveling food into his mouth without really tasting it. He was lost in memories of his wife and the holiday's they had spent together. He looked old and sad. His mood that even spread to his normally independent tentacles which lay on the ground behind him, flexing in a lethargic fashion.

Awen, unaware of the depressed fisherman just down way, came paddling slowly on her back ontop of the water. Normally she'd be flying through the waterways so quickly she'd probably be a blur to the grey haired man, but now she'd decided to slow down, and just take in the pleasure of drifting down the stream on her back, as she had when she was a little girl at her parent's cottage.

Slowly an eye turned from the sky to lazily search along the bank. It was so beautiful here Awen could hardly believe it at times. She knew the pain and suffering of the islanders, it was clear on Amaya's face earlier, but the manta herself actually enjoyed it. For reasons she could not fathom, should it be her getting over her phobia or perhaps it was her infatuation with a certain french lab tech, but Awen actually enjoyed her time on the island. She just wanted others to as well.

Her gaze then fell upon the man sitting on the river's edge, plate of food with him and everything seeming dreary. It took a few moments to notice the tentacles laying at his side. Oh, so this was the other islander with tentacles Shenzi had said she had seen? Awen smiled slightly and waved a webbed hand at the one on the bank while staying on her back.

"Hello over there." She called.

Richard started at the voice. His tentacles pulled themselves into striking postion with a volient motion. Sighing Richard looked up from his food, fork posed over the cranberry sauce.

Another aquatic islander? His secluded fishing spot was apparently on a major through way for them. At least she wasn't Billy. He gave a half hearted smile and returned the wave. "Hello." He called back.

Normally he'd just at the oppertunity to meet a friendly face. Today was different. He stabbed at his plate.

Awen shifted from her back to wade in the water before the aged islander. She frowned seeing the not so sincere smile and tilted her head. He must not be taking things very well... he must be relatively new, with so many human features left, he probably didn't take kindly to the lab's joke.

She tried to chuckled a little and gave him a curious glance. "Not very fond of cranberries, eh?" She noted when he stabbed the fork onto the plate. Obviously the man was upset, but Awen would try to make things at least a little better.

The manta girl just hoped he wasn't the 'grumpy old man' type...

"What? Oh." Richard stared at his plate with a blank expression. "I suppose..." Cranberries... His mind spiralled down to the depths of his mind. He remembered those, Erica had hated them but her mother always insisted that it wasn't thanksgiving without them. Her mother, Dorothy had always gotten her way in that aspect, and had always been the better cook, no matter how hard Erica had tried she could never out do her mother's cooking. They would compete, sometimes bitterly over who would host thanksgiving each year. Declaring who would cook what. Then when it was over they would glare at the guests and make them judge each entry, while the guests attempted to weasel out of declaring a side.

It had been an uncomfortable tradition of the Harrison household but now that it was just memory it brought a mournful smile to Richard's face. His wet eyes glazed, looking through Arwin, seeing only memories.

Awen swam a little coser until her feet touch the bottom ofthe river. She leaned over until only her shoulders and head porturded from the water, her body resting on her knees and elbows under the water. She watched the man for a sort while as he stared off into space and the manta sighed.

Everyone on the island thought of home around the holidays, Awen herself had been guilty of secluding herself last Christmas because she missed her friends so much. It had to be a lot worse for the old man infront of her, seeing as he was an old man and old men miss a lot of things, even if they weren't trapped on an island away from civilization.

"Well, my name's Awen. Sorry for disturbing your meal." She pushed back away from the bank once more into the depths of the river, but still just treading water.

Any thought of Erica eventually spiral down to one event and Richard visibly shuddered as the faint sound of funeral music began to drift through his mind. Arwin's voice eventually wound it's way through his clouded mind and he grasped at it like a life line.

He dropped his fork and put his hands to his face, wiping his eyes with the palms of his hand. "Sorry." he said exhaling.

When he moved his hands away his eyes were much more clear. They saw Arwin for the first time now. He smiled again, this time it actually reaching into his eyes a little, lips parting a crack. "I guess I'm being a bit rude. I'm Richard." He slid the tray away from him a bit. He had been eating out of more habit than hunger.

Awen shook her head. "Not at all!" She gave him a genuine smile. "I should have known better to intrude. Most islanders, when they're out in the rivers or in the jungle, are out there to be alone. I kind of forget sometimes... because I'm usually in the rivers and out here, I don't mind seeing people- it's not where I go to get away." She laughed brightly. "I mean, most islanders can't go into the small cracks and caves near the bottom of the lake when they want to be alone."

Now stirred from his mental funk seemed far more open to a conversation that he had been a minute ago. He gave a weak chuckle. "I'm beginning to think that my secluded fishing spot is more like a busy freeway. Seems like every time I come out here I run into somebody. Course, William stole my fish before saying hi." Richard shook his head at the absent octopuss man. "Sorry you have to share the lake with that one."

Richard looked very interested in Awen's mention of caves and crannies on the bottom of the lake.

"William?" Awen couldn't help but ask outloud as her brow crunched together. Now that was a name she hadn't heard before. Another probably well progressed islander that plays in the river named William? Wracking her brain for a few minutes she couldn't match the name to a face.

"Ah, well, I don't find it all that busy. Not with islanders anyway, lots of fish and things though. ... Sometimes the things can get quite danergous, but I can outswim them anyway." Shrugging her shoulders and paddled around in a small circle. "But I guess you'll soon know what I mean huh?" She motioned to the man's tentacles.

Tentacles? "Oh! And you meant Billy, right? He is quite an a** actually....tried to kill me once..." She grumbled. "Though I think it was because he was going through some kind of withdrawl....

Richard's gaze shifted to the tentacles hovering over his shoulders. "Hmpf." It was quite oblivious that Richard had a less than favorable opinion of his squishy appendages. "I have no idea actually." He turned back to Awen, "I'm apparently one of Sabin's 'special' projects. Mythological he says. I've read every book on the subject in our little library and haven't found anything about a four armed monster with two tentacles." There was bitterness mixed with annoyance. He spread his arm to show Awen his two smaller arms.

"He did? Doesn't surprise me. he didn't seem like the most stable of people. Be careful though, he's living on a rock at the mouth of this here river."

Awen nodded. "Oh thaks for the warning." She hadn't been by this way all that much really. She hadn't seen Billy in the longest time. Which suited her just fine.

The manta's eyes lit up at the mention of Richard being one of Sabin's special projects. The man himself may not have been fond of his change, but Awen always found them interesting, especially if the word mythological came into play. She'd always wanted to be a gryphon or a dragon or a phoenix or something of the sort when she was little.

"Four armed monster with two tenticals?" Awen mulled the changes over for a moment before something came to her. "Technically it's probably more like six armed monster, or six footed monster. Unless... um. You haven't lost any mobility in your legs have you? They haven't changed at all?"

Ever since she'd met the guy who'd been given a bird in the cage as a clue to his serum Awen kind of fancied playing 'guess the animal' with the islanders. "From what I hear people that loose their legs start to notice a chane earlier on....or at least Thom and the other snake lady did... from what I remember..." And indeed her memory was fuzzy.

"I would say you might just be something like a giant squid, but that's not very elegant and I doubt Sabin would be that dull. Because really if it was a giant squid you'd just need a squid serum... and... that's not very mythical..."

If Richard had been standing he would have taken a step back but being seated prevented that. He settled for leaning back while knitting his brow. She seemed to be quite fond of Sabin's work. No superior attitude like that of Ginvera or Zach but instead mirroring Sabin's own... enthuisism. Was there a connection between them?

Still if this led to figuring out his serum, Richard was willing to play along. Besides he was curious to see where the girl excited babbling would lead. Richard started nodding as Awen spoke, he gradually replacing his wary expression with that kindly grandfather demenor.

"I can say with certianity that I'm not a plain giant squid." He grabbed one of his tentacles from where it was hovering. He ran a finger along the top of the club then showed it to Awen. It was dry, there was no slime. "They have a skeleton of sorts too. Besides these and my little arms, I just lost a little weight." He smiled a bit, showing Awen he had forgotten about his pointed canines.

Awen studied the tentacle moving slightly closer. Not that studying it closely would do her much good. In general she knew some mythology and from what Sabin had told her her knowledge had grown slightly, but as far as the fine details went Awen was at a loss. Still she'd try....

She bit her lip and focused on the question. She hadn't even noticed the weird look the man had given her, she only looked up to him when he spoke again and had that friendly grandfather type expression. Awen instantly liked this man, she'd always been a sucker for those kinds of expressions and characters in movies. Not knowing her grandparents Awen loved to pretend those looks she sw in movies were given specifically for her. But that was when she was young, she hadn't done that in years. She still took a liking to those expressions though...

"You have fangs too! But only a few teeth... not like a shark or any sea creature I know of... More like a dog or a ....." She paused and realisation slowly came her her. "..cat!"

She giggled as she figured it out. Could Sabin really be doing what she thinks he was? Taking his cute kitten she's heard so much about and made it into an islander?

"Oh I think I know! You're probably a misplacer beast!" She nodded. "Would account for all the extra limbs, the teeth and the tentacles. Not to mention why Sabin would think you're a special project..."

Richard blinked. "A misplacer beast? What on earth is that?" Richard's mind race trying to dredge the name up from the all the research he had done the last two weeks and came up with nothing. "Its a cat?" Richard wrinkled his nose at the idea. He really didn't care for cats.

"Well... kind of. I can't remember all the details, but I'm pretty sure it's a six legged cat with tentacles growing from it's back. Awhile ago Sabin had a little stint where he was combining animals together to create these mythical creatures. From what I hear Moreau got angry and scrapped the whole project. Only, appearently, one of the islander's pets was spared plus Sabin's pet, which he made to look like a misplacer beast."

She nodded slowly and cirlced in the water trying to remember everything correctly, it was a big hazey. "So I think that's probably it..."

Richard wasn't sure if to feel relieved or horrified. Awen could probably see the elder gentleman's brain churning. On the bright side he'd stay a mammal. On the other hand this thing sound like no natural creature. He would be as Moreau said... A monster. What about that last part. They couldn't do that? Could he? Richard's arms crossed his chest, hands grasping at lumps on his chest. Richard gave a shudder.

He licked his lips. "How did he come up with that? Richard looked at the ground.

Awen froze as she looked back up to the man. In her excitment for figuring out the riddle she'd forgotten there is a very real and potentially scared islander sitting on a rock infront of her. She winced as she lowered her eyes to the water. Suddenly all the excitement faded from her features and she just seemed sorry.

"Um... it's an old mythological creature. Probably means it's been in some video games or tabletop stuff too..." She frowned and looked back up to the grey haired man. "I'm sorry Richard..."

"Its okay... I'll be fine. Thankgiving is always a rotten day for me anyway." Richard's face was a neutral mask. Would Sabin keep him as a pet too? A thought occured to him... Was he intended to be this... thing's mate? Because Moreau doesn't want to make 'waste' serums on animals?

Richard stood, not able to look at Awen for the moment. "Umm... Thank you? Sabin wouldn't tell me earlier. It had been on my mind." He nodded and pick up his tray.

Awen nodded slowly and tried to smile. "Well, um, you're welcome. Maybe since we've kind of figured it out if you ask Sabin directly he will confirm." She shrugged her shoulders slightly. "But hey, don't worry about it too much anyway. Worrying makes life a whole lot worse, don't really know what's coming, can't tell how it will turn out, so why bother with the pre-worry of it all? Try to enjoy yourself for the time being, right? At least it's a nice day and not storming. Tropical island, secluded fishing spot... relax for awhile... like you're on vacation."

She sighed slightly and nodded brightly to the man. "Have a nice day Richard. It was great meeting you!" With a smile and a wave the manta ray dove back underwater and took off down the river.

Nighttime swim with a glowy fish

Awen circled the top of the lake's surface slowly on her back. The day had been a very long one and many things were on her mind. THe foremost probably being Sabin's special islander experiment. The idea, in her mind, was incredibly interesting and she puzzled what this meant. Had Sabin done what he told her he might, had he made a serum from his pet's DNA? Or was he mimicing what he did to the poor cat to Richard?

The manta gazed casually to the side to see one of the tagged turky wandering near the shore in the dusk light. The poor little things, awaiting their demize. Such a neat idea though, great prank from the labs, and a lot of islanders will probably be able to appreciate hunting their own food these days.

Lost in thought Awen turned her attention to the ever darkening night sky. It was so beautiful out here....

Inspiration was a fickle b***h, and being sans typewriter wasn't helping things for Sid. He'd made a few awkward attempts at jotting down notes, but the more he thought about each idea, the less he felt he could flesh it out into a full play. Why had he ever agreed to that? Because he was a writer... He probably should have mentioned than in his entire career he'd only actually finished one book.

After mulling over his options and drinking a bit, he was left feeling so frustrated and restless that he had to get out. Pacing the floor didn't help, not when the slapping sound his feet made kept boring into his brain. So, grabbing the trunks that were as sloppily altered as the rest of his clothes, Sid set out for the lake. It was blissfully dark, and he was just drunk enough to feel confident that if there were any psycho feral islanders about, they'd probably already glutted themselves on all the damn turkeys wandering around. A sudden gobble somewhere in the jungle still made him jump.

Once he reached the lake he made a lot of noise plowing through the shallow water. He didn't expect anyone to be out to complain- much less notice the faint light those certain scales gave off. He still didn't understand how that worked.

Awen soon noticed the sound of the splashing coming into the lake, and straightened to a treading water type position so she could see better. The first thing she noticed was a faint glow coming from between the water splashes and she sunk back down under the water.

Blinking her eyes so her vision would turn from blurry to clear she concentrated on the being intruding upon her blissful silence. Swiming a little closer she noticed between the patches of glowing and grey-black there was faint peach tones and the girl smiled. It was just another islander, but who?

Awen resurfaced suddenly quite close to the poor writer, but made sure not to be directly infront. She was off to his left a fair ways as she waved slightly. "Hello there, out for a swim?"

Awen resurfaced suddenly quite close to the poor writer, but made sure not to be directly infront. She was off to his left a fair ways as she waved slightly. "Hello there, out for a swim?"

She seemed to study him a little closely before shrugging and flipping back up to her back. "More and more aquatics every day..." She mumbled to herself.

Honestly, how many were there since she'd been under that she no longer knew? There were at least two more that Sabin hadn't told her about... Not that it mattered much, Awen was just curious to see how full the lake would get by the end of this... if there was an end of this.

"Your glowy scales are kind of neat. My name's Awen, by the way."

"Thanks, I guess..." They always had to mention the scales. "Name's Sid."

He was willing to risk making an a** of himself by saying, "Haven't seen you around before."

"Been a little under the weather.... I was taken to the labs for... about three-ish months or so." She shrugged her shoulders and stared up to the sky.

"I was actually just going to say the same thing to you. By the looks of you, you can't be new anyway, do you come to the lake often? Maybe we just miss eachother or something." She grinned a little and glanced over to the strange fish man. "Probably would have recognised you otherwise."

Feeling somewhat relieved the teeth weren't an issue, Sid relaxed a little. He began to swim in slow circles, keep a respectable (or safe) distance between them as he did. Keeping still, he found, led to strange impulses... impulses he tried not to think much about at the moment.

"Three months, huh..." He turned and swam back. "Sounds like more than a little under the weather... As for me? This is a new thing..."

"Oh!" Awen nodded slightly doing her own little laps, noticing the distance and respecting it. "So you've just recently changed? A pretty big step for the first, let me tell you. From what I've seen anyway."

Shaking her head a little she smiled. "And in all honesty I'm not sure yet what happened to me. All I know is I passed out and woke up in the labs a couple times, vaguely, then woke up the last time in my new duplex, which ends up being months after my last memory. Not a terribly big deal, just kind of a....break from the island you could say?"

"Nah, this wasn't the first," he said, propelling himself backwards with his tail. "I wasn't so, uh, scaly before..." He shouldn't have had to search for the word, but his mind wasn't exactly clear.

"What do you mean, new duplex? They move someone else in the old one while you were away?"

"Ah, alright." She stretched a little bit as she bobbed back and forth. "Um, just it's a duplex that's connected to the lake. Most of it is full of water. I don't know if anyone's moved into my old one yet or no actually.... but my new one is just better suited for me these days."

Awen could just imagine what her reaction would have been if they had her placed in the special duplex right when she came to the island. That would have made her freak out.

"Oh, I get it... One of those." Yet another things of the list Sid would likely have to worry about in the future. "It's true about the air thing, isn't it? That when it's over you're stuck?"

How many times, and to how many different people, had he asked that question? Enough that he should have known he was ********. Maybe it wasn't his memory, maybe he just kept hoping to be proven wrong.

Awen shook her head and sighed. "To be entirely honest, I don't know for sure. I've been worrying about that since my second change, I think, maybe my first at times." Biting her lip she wondered and then her tone became more cheery. "But I don't think it's true. The labs are quite advanced, and every day they're learning more and more things about the serums. I'm sure it will be worked out that no one will be stuck only breathing through their gills. After all, I'm the first aquatic on the island," so Sabin had said, "and I'm not stuck."

"Yeah, but are you, uh... finished?" From where he was floating, she seemed pretty far along. And she had hair, which gave him a little bit of hope for the future. That reminded him, "And do you still have legs?"

She sighed and shook her head slowly. "Sadly enough, no I'm not finished. One more to go, from what I've seen of other people's transformations."

The manta girl flipped back onto her back and kicked a flipper up out of the water and holding it there so Sid can see what more or less passes for a normal leg, Awen hoped would put the man at some ease. "Two strong and healthy legs actually." Lowering her leg back into the water she sighed. "I head Alec lost his already though, and he showed up awhile after me. So... I guess it depends on the person, the serum?"

"Yeah... I feel sorry for the kid, though." Tired of circles, Sid changed it up to just going back and forth. He was reminded of the fact sharks would supposedly die if they stopped moving, but they probably went it let it go that far... Still, he was glad it wasn't him.

"It's hard not to think about it- what's next I mean." He wished he hadn't admitted that from the moment he closed his mouth.

Awen sighed softly and she just let herself drift in the water. She watched the odd back and forth motions of the other islander with a certain level of caution.

"You get used to it." She said quite bluntly. "Nothing we can do to stop it, might as well just take it as it comes and tr to enjoy it. You have to make peace with it eventually...."

"Everybody says that..." Sid pushed himself back towards Awen, then veered to one as he thought better of it. "I'm just trying not to freak out about it."

So far, so good, except for the typewriter incident... and the fact he hadn't exactly been fully sober in weeks. He shook his head at that.

"One sec." And with that he dove beneath the waters surface. His movement was easy enough to track by the lights, and within a few seconds he rose a few yards away. Panting a little- hell, his lungs were a wreck and he didn't have any gills- he slicked his hair out of his eyes with one hand. "That was driving me nuts."

Awen chuckled a little and nodded. "I can understand the feeling." It was kind of interesting to watch the glowing lights under the water, but Awen wondered why he'd been moving closer and the turned away awhile earlier.

"I know everyone says that... but there is a reason. In the end it's all we can do. Not freakingout helps too. On the plus side, some really neat things are bound to happen with the changes. I mean the whole gill thing might not seem appealing, but being underwater for long periods of time... there's some pretty interesting things sometimes, and it's nice and quiet if you ever want some time to yourself...."

"That's a plus..." Sid couldn't even act like he was excited by the idea. He couldn't figure out if the beer was to blame for his mood, or if it was the general maddening lack of inspiration. He sighed, but tried to force things over to a more positive note anyway.

"Still, it's nice to see others... 'aquatics', I mean. There's just been Billy and Alec and... uh... that Geisha chick. Haven't seen here in a while. I imagine she's fishier by now."

"Ah, I see. Well, I only know of a couple others and I don't even know where they are at the moment. I guess it's sort of good to see more of us. I tell you... when it was just me and Billy I was quite scared." She couldn't help but laugh a little bit and shake her head.

But the manta girl soon yawned slowly. "But it's a bit late, been a long day, I might be calling it in."

"Alright... I figure I'll stay out a while longer. Night's easier on the eyes, anyway." Sid pushed himself away from her again. "Nice meeting you."

Awen smiled and nodded. "Have a good swim, I suppose I'll be seeing you around."

With that the manta ray disappeared underwater. There were distinct advantages to having her room attatched to the lake, no more getting out and having to plod her way back to her room. Overall Awen was quite happy.

Star Wars Marathon-intermission

Marshall yawned, as weird as it was with his new beak-mouth, and found himself slowly being pulled towards the Entertainment Room. As if he ever went any where else, really. He was shocked, however, to see a blue-haired girl watching "Star Wars". From the looks of it, it was one of the newer ones.

"Um...Hi." Marshall said weakly as he made his way over the soda cans, eyes not leaving the TV screen. He was never a big fan of the newer films, but they were pretty to look at. He looked back at the blue-haired girl, noticing how far along she was changed. Despite that he still found her...Pretty.

...s**t!

Quickly, and as subtle as a freight train, he sucked in his tiny paunch stomach.

Awen, so wrapped up in the drama of the movie she hadn't seen the penguin-boy come in. She shook her head slowly and muttered under her breath "Lucas can too write dialogue."

When the new comer finally spoke Awen jumped and looked up at him. "Oh! Hi there." She quickly sat up from her lazy position on the couch to make room. "Star Wars marathon? Still have a few movies to go after this one."

Introductions and pleasantries be damned at the moment. Awen had seen so many new islanders in the passed few days she was starting to wonder if she and Amaya were the only old ones left. Within the passed while, that Awen remembered anyway, she'd stopped being shocked by the appearence of new comers or their changes, so nothing about his had been mention. Though she did note that a penguin could get terribly uncomfortable on a tropical island.

"Uh-um...Sure. Alright." Marshall said, unusually shy. He took a seat in one of the recliners that Gaius usually used, watching the film. He couldn't tell which one it was; either the second or third old one.

"Um, I'm Marshall, by the way." he said.

Um!? I had to think what my name was?!

Awen eventually pried her eyes away from the screen to smile at the newcomer. "The name's Awen. Nice to meet you. Sorry for the mess... I was intending to clean up later." She chuckled and shrugged.

"Heh heh...Its no worse than when I get the Entertainment Room to myself, really. Except there's usually like...M&M wrappers every where." Marshall joked, relaxing just a bit.

"So, um...You been here a while?" Marshall asked, not really sure what to talk about to Awen.

color=blue]Awen's face lit up at the mention of M&Ms she hadn't had any of those in so long. She was very happy that aside from having fish more and more often her eating habits hadn't changed much. That is to say she could still process the junk food.

"Yeah, quite awhile.... over a year actually. I suppose you've been here for a bit too hm?"

"Hmm...Welll...I'm not sure how long I've been here to be honest. I think its been a couple of months." Marshall said, realizing how terrible he had been keeping track of the time on the island. Oh well, not like he had any job to wake up for or any thing.

"Um...This might be rude but um...What exactly are you turning into? I'm a Penguin myself..." Marshall asked, making very awkward small talk.

Awen laughed again softly. "Well, I can see that must be horribly awkward though... I mean penguins are not designed for such weather, huh?"

Awen paused a moment and grinned at the TV. It was Vader's first awakening in the suit. He seemed so worried about Padme, the poor guy. Oh and...yup here he goes... with his frankenstien style freak out.

Glancing back to Marshall the blue haired girl smiled. "And me? I'm a manta ray. Pretty neat actually..."

"Its actually not so bad...So far all I've experienced is a new-found love of Ice Cream and junk..." Marshall laughed, "And a Manta Ray? Thats actually really cool." Marshall said, watching the boring actor go on and on about his "one and only love" or something. And yet, it was STILL better than Jar Jar Binks.

Awen stretched back out and nodded. "It has it's moments anyway. So much better than being afraid of water." Looking back Awen thought it was such a silly thing to fear.

Finally prying her attention away from the TV indefinately Awen smiled. "So, I've been out of it for a few months, under the weather in the labs and whatnot, so what's the happening, the gossip? I mena you've been here long enough and seem to be fairly well adujusted in good spirits, you're the first person since I've been back I can ask. So spill, what's been going on? Oh I heard about there being a halloween party from um... what's her name... Shenzi? The other blue haired girl on the island, appearently. So was it fun, did they have kareoke again this year? Was there actually a good turn out? I can't believe my favourite time of the year passed and I was zonked out in the labs."

Marshall's face, had it not been covered in feathers, would have been paper-white. He grabbed his arm with his good hand, a little uncomfortable talking about the party. "Um...W-Well..." Marshall cleared his throat awkwardly.

Do I tell the truth?!

"Y-Yeah, there were a lot of people there...And I think there was some Karaoke, even if no one did it..." Marshall said, trying his hardest to avoid the topic of the Trail.

Awen noticed the penguins sudden change from shy to downright nervous. She sighed a little bit and shook her head, she couldn't help a small smirk. "Oh, I get it. The tech's thought it would be funny to have someone change during the party huh? Scare the newbies." She shook her head, honestly that far wasn't too bad in her eyes.

Everyone had to change sometime, and she long ago decidd she hated the lies and pretenses that came with being a new person. She was fairly certain there were a few people at last year's party that had thought all the transformations were just costumes. What a way to get a reality check.

"Um...N-No...No one changed. That'd be an improvement on the night..." Marshall sighed. He needed to tell her, that was obvious. Even if it was painful to talk about.

"Um...There was this trail...And...Um...A couple of my freinds got hurt, but, um...There was this...G-Graveyard...And, um...A..." he cleared his throat, "...A lot of people were in there. Us. The subjects. A-Apparently...They didn't...Survive their transformations."

Awen's lofty grin faded as she sat up once more. Her expression was deadly serious at the mention of a graveyard. Was it true? Could there be such a thing? Who had died? A number of faces and questions reeled in her mind threatening to all burst out at once until she paused. It was Halloween after all.

She chuckled lightly and shook her head. "Oh come on Marshall, there's no way you'd be fooled by that. I mean, sure, the labs have the money to pull elaborate pranks sometimes, but it couldn't have been that bad eh?"

Marshall looked at her sharply, wanting to yell at her. "Awen..." he stood up, "...They were real. Some guy named The Dude...Matt or some thing...And a girl named Fiona Brooks...T-There were a lot of gravestones, but they all said the same thing: Death by Complications or Victim of...Annie, whatever that is. I-it was real, damnit!" he explained to her, letting that last sentence out as a bit of a yell. The whole thing was not some thing he took lightly.

Awen's mind hit a wall. Honestly it felt as thought she'd been hit with a ton of bricks. There's no way that it could be true. The labs put islander's names on the tombstones and reasons for their death, to add realism. There was no way that it was true. The Dude, Fee? And the part about killed by Annie? There was no way.

"Annie is the sweetest girl you'd ever meet. There is no way she would have killed anyone." She smiled and nodded definately. "I know you're scared Marshall, and I believe that it probably was quite convincing. But trust me when I say, that it's not real. I could maybe believe you if it was just death by complications, but the fact is they revealed it to you on Halloween and they say Annie killed people. It's a joke. It has to be, convincing at the time probably, but I bet you where ever this graveyard was is all cleaned up and nothing but jungle now. It's a hoax, they do that occasionally."

She have a snort. "You should have seen what they did for April Fool's Day. Made us believe that there was a rescue mission on the way. Not to mention the lockout, now *that* was a bit of hell you should be glad you missed. But everyone survived that, they wouldn't let us die. Look at me, I had some kind of problem, a complication, and I'm perfectly fine. Albeit I was out of commission for three months, but I'm fixed, and I'm the first aquatic. Fee and the Dude and any of them are all regular mammals, they'd have fixed them up no problem."

Ah denial. If Awen wasn't dead certain it couldn't be true she would have been reminded of her fist day on the island. Marshall's yelling was vaguely reminessent of when Pyroth had yelled at her to face the facts. But she was facing the facts, the labs pull pranks.

"...You want to see it?" Marshall asked, hearing her. He wanted to believe she was right, oh lord how he wanted to believe that it was all just some terribly mean joke. But he knew better. There WAS a long path that lead to a graveyard. There WAS a wild animal out there named Annie.

"'Cause...You've been here longer...You can tell me if their real or not." Marshall said, almost believe what she was saying.

She smiled encouragingly to Marshall. "It's no big deal really hun. Tell me where abouts it is and I'll find my way there. It'll all just be a clearing I bet by now. I'll definately tell you when I come back though, alright?"

She stood up slowly and stretched. "I needed a break before diving into the original three movies anyway. A walk would do me some good."

"...Alright." Marshall said, giving her the directions. At least, as well as he could remember. "...Um...Just don't go late, alright?" Marshall said. He knew she wouldn't believe him, but maybe if she saw it, she'd change her mind?

"I'm...Gonna head back to my duplex. I'm at 59, if you ever want to drop by or any thing." Marshall said, forcing a weak smile. He knew what he saw, and knew that she thought he was delusional, but still, he didn't dislike her for it.

He waved weakly as he left the room, shoving his flipper-hands into his vest pockets.

...What if it was a joke?...

"Yeah, I probably won't go after dark. That'd be just silly. But alright I'll see you later. Special Duplex One is my res, if you ever want to come around."

She waved a bit and after he left she started to clean up the garbage she'd left on the floor. A short while later she steeled herself as she left the entertainment room.

What if it wasn't a joke...?

The Horrid Truth

Awen, after finally cleaning up her mess in the entertainment room walked out into the daylight. She had to squint and blink for a short time as she got used to the natural sunlight.

"Urg... like coming out of the theatre..." She shook her head slowly as the sharpness of the light dulled slightly. "Note to self: order sunglasses."

She looked around and sighed softly. "Now where did Marshall say this little path was again..."

"Oh Richard!" Awen exclaimed as she took a slight step back, thinking the old man wasn't going to stop in time. "How are you today? A little better I hope?"

The thought of the graveyard was temporarily set aside. It didn't matter very much, after all it was fake. Interaction with a fellow islander, especially one that gave such good vibes, was definately more important.

Richard certianly looked better. He smiled when he saw Awen. The holiday past the memories had stopped assulting him, he had far more to think about now, and as serious as those matters were dealing with them was far better than thinking about Erica. "I'm fine, don't worry about me." Richard would never admit weakness if he could help it.

"And what are you up to today? Off for a swim?"

"I was just having a Star Wars movie marathon, but halfway through Marshall came to meet me. I don't know if you two've met... um..penguin guy?" She smiled as if nothing had been wrong, there was no real gravyard, Fee and all the others weren't dead at all. She just hadn't seen them in awhile.

"Anyway, trying to catch up on the gossip around here you know what I've missed, how the Halloween party was, all that jazz. He told me about this little gravyard that him and some others were lead to on Halloween." She laughed, not knowing how out of line it was. "The poor guy, he still believes it's real. The labs pull this kind of stuff from time to time, so I'm not surprised they did it right. But the things he said just didn't add up." She shook her head witha grin. "Now I'm going to go check out this graveyard, probably find a clearing in the woods where it was, come back and tell him I was right."

Richard's face darkened a bit at the mention of the graveyard. So she didn't know? That might explain her... overly cheery disposition. He wondered how she had missed it. He pondered breifly allow her to keep her denial and then decided againist it. The truth was important, no matter if it hurt or not. Delusion of the situation just leads to further hardship. Letting out a breath Richard looked down at his still completely human hands as he folded them together. When he looked up he looked old, his Ice colored eyes seeming to reflect his lifetime. "Its no joke Awen. That was the scary part of halloween. That was the message."

She puzzled over his words for about three point four seconds before chuckling, her eyes still sparkling. "Richard! Not you too!" Shaking her head in disbelief Awen couldn't help herself. "I know a kid like Marshall could fall for something like that, but not you."

From what little she knew of both of them she was making assumptions. "It was Halloween, they were just trying to scare everyone. I mean honestly, Marshall told me what was on the headstones. I could maybe believe it if it was just "death by complications" but really how am I supposed to believe "Death by Annie"? That girl is such the sweetest thing. I don't know if you've met her yet or not, but probably not given your reaction. They always leave one or two tell-tale signs that it's a joke by the end. Saying that Annie killed some people is just one of those signs. Trust me."

The girl was in denial... incased in it like a cocoon of concrete. He exhaled through his nostrils and shook his head. "Awen I know you want to think this is a like a vacation but its not. Sometime I like to pretend it is and I've probably been doing that to often lately. At the end of the day, this.. research has a human cost." He bit his cheek. "Why don't I come with you, I'll explain what happened. Starting with Annie." Richard knew that Awen would be a tough case to crack but he was going to try. He saw it has a duty.

"Richard." She said rather flatly. "I know it's not a vacation. I know the reality of the situation. COme on, look at me, you think I don't know? I was hydrophobic before I changed far enough. You don't think I don't know what the horror it is changing? Trust me, I know. I say only that because I want to try to cheer people up. I want people to try to be happy for a time, because I know the island is hard on a lot of people. We just have to face facts that we're here for the rest of our lives, and quite frankly we have to get over it and move on at some point. I've passed that point long ago, and I try to embrace the gifts that were given to me through the horror. Not everyone is there though, and one of the best ways of getting away from the problem, at least for a little while, is to think of this as a vacation."

She sighed a little and shrugged her shoulders. "I'd enjoy the company on the way up I think though. Maybe we can work some of this out... It's this way... right?"

Awen started down the way following the directions Marshall had given her. "And please don't get me wrong Richard, I love the truth. You have no idea what pains it caused me- but I always tell the flat truth. I don't engage in keeping new islanders in the dark, hell, I even tried to advise Fee on her plans, what may work and what won't. It caused me a lot of spite from othe islanders, the new ones and old, Fee especially. She thinks I'm some kind of spy for the labs or something..." The last part was added in a slight grumble. "But there is no way it's real. Annie is too much of a sweet heart. And think about it, they revealed this on Halloween, they're just trying to scare people."

Awen's brow creased as they kept walking. The processing in her mind took quite awhile. It was staged, was her first thought, but slowly that was being unraveled by fact and logic.

How could the labs get Fiona, of all people, to agree to it? With all those witnesses it's hard not to believe. Nita, at least, wouldn't lie. She didn't know Sid very well and she'd never met this Gaius fellow, but Nita wouldn't lie. An islander going berserk wasn't terribly uncommon either. And if Annie was so sweet before... maybe the animal got the better of her submissive nature. It could dominate quite easily. Her face set in a frown as one thing was missing.

"But...." She said in a less certain tone. "No, no. The labs put a chip.... they would have put her to sleep before she could do major damage."

Awen remembered the first time she'd seen someone being put to sleep. It was the Dude after the first halloween party. Then Jamal, then Billy when he tried to kill her. No, no. THey would have stopped it.

A yes the chip. The whole reason the lab had so much control over their lives. But it was also their safety net and without it the islanders would probably be in cages. "The chip... didn't work. She tore it out with her claws. Appearently it doesn't work that well if the subject is changing while they are trying to buzz you." That was all the detail he had on that. Beside there being another island who had appearently removed their chip. He wasn't about to tell Awen that however.

"I'm sorry Awen." He watched her, both concerned and glad it was finally sinking in.

Awen's frown deepened as she listened to the old man's words. Tear out the chip? Was that even possible...? She glanced over to study Richard's face for the longest time. The manta girl just couldn't believe it, no. He was lying, wasn't he? After all she'd only met this guy once before. He could be as slimey as Billy for all she knew, or maybe he liked to toy with her like Antony did?

No... that wasn't right at all. Richard didn't seem one to lie or beat around the bush. His little bulletine board message proved that much.

"But..." She tried desperately to think of something else. Some other way it couldn't be true. She head was spinning and tears seemed near but she shook her head and steeled herself. "How much farther?" She asked, her tone hardened.

She had to see for herself.

"Its still a bit of a hike. Its near the laboratories." This was going to be quite a workout without his cane. There was nothing more to say until Awen saw the stones. So the rest of walk they did not speak, although with Richard's heavy to labored breathing, depending on the incline, the walk was far some silent.

Awen saw the clearing up ahead and suddenly her nerve faltered. She didn't like dellusions, as long as they were other people's. Her own were quite comforting, and for as long as possible she would hang onto the potential that it was all a hoax. Though she already knew the truth, she didn't want to see it for herself all of a sudden.

She paused and hesitated, but rather than admit to it she turned back and gave Richard a concerned smile. "Are you going to be okay? I didn't realise it was this far or I'd never have had you come..." The poor man must be near exhaustion the way he'd been breathing on the way there. For most of the journy Awen was too wrapped up in her own thoughts to comment or take it in fully.

Richard waved her off, "I'm fine. Almost there anyway." Internally he cursed his lack of his cane but he wasn't going to admit that he needed assistance. He wasn't old, just advanced middle age. Yes that was it.

He pressed on until the low fence was visable where he stopped and pointed. "There it is." He said breathlessly. That low wall looked like a good spot to sit down.

Awen swallowed hard before turning to follow the man the rest of the way to the short wall. She kept her eyes on the ground until she almost ran into it. Where was that determination, the steel, the disbelief and laughter even? The manta was a pile of mush trying to get her head to just tilt up to look.

Finally she sighed and looked up. From where she was nothing much but the gravestones could be seen, no details. She bit her lip and made her way over the fence. She was pointedly ignoring the ache in her fins and the dryness of her rubbery skin, as the walk had dehydraded and pained them both. This was not the time to be worrying for oneself.

The first she went over to was the larger, more detailed grave. "Alphonse Moreau..." She whispered under her breath and read the heading. "His creations were his life...and his death." Awen's brow turned down again as she pondered this. "This guy is old enough to be Moreau's ...what great grandfather? Grandfather...? Was he... could he have been...doing similar experiments?"

Ah distractions distractions... they were always nice. But Awen found this one couldn't hold for long, but she did store this information in the back of her mind. Probably to ask Sabin later.

Slowly she made her way to the other graves, the...fresher ones that you could still read.

Guard, guard, oh a doctor too? All killed by Anni it says. Part of Awen still didn't want to believe it. Not Annie.... But she knew... it had to be true. This wasn't a hoax a prank or a joke. The name Oscar didn't ring any sort of bells in her mind though.

The hardest part was when her eyes fell on the next tombstone. The Dude... no way... it couldn't be... He was so...full of life and... but she hadn't seen him for awhile... but dead since february?

Pressing on, something compelling Awen to keep going until she'd read all of the recent stones Awen's pruple gaze fell on the others. Matt, another name she didn't know.

Fiona.... and Nathan. Both of these she recognised... but only one had meant something to her. Nathan she'd only met briefly for a poker game... Fee though...

As much as the two were at odds with eachother Awen cared for the red head. The pressure and tension didn't seem to get to Awen all that much and honestly everything stemmed from Awen trying to keep the girl safe.

Complications, Annie..... How had this happened? The labs were advanced, they were supposed to be safe as long as they didn't deviate from the path. Awen did, on a few occasions, and was almost killed for it. There was no reason for this to have happened.

Awen was in the labs for three months, she'd had complications but she hadn't died. Why did they have to? Jamal went feral for some time but she'd never killed anyone, even Billy who was derranged and quite insane for a time from his withdrawl hadn't killed anyone. No one was supposed to be able to kill anyone, the process was supposed to be safe as long as you kept getting the shots!

Everything swarmed the blue haired head of her's and for a time she just stood staring at the ground. She didn't move, couldn't move.

"This isn't supposed to happen..." Her voice was weak and it's uncertain if Richard would even have heard it. She was trembling....but she didn't seem to notice anything. "It's supposed to be safe..."

Richard sat heavily on the wall and watch Awen make her rounds on the headstones. He responded to her questions about the first grave. "Yup, he's the one that started all this. Moreau's grandfather, he turned animals into humans appearently and I believe found the key to all this. I don't think Moreau could do all this without his Grandfather's work. Runs in the family I suppose."

Richard let her tour the rest of the graves in silence, focusing on catching his breath and getting his heart to stop thundering in his ears.

When Richard saw Awen reach the grave he knew to be Fiona's and freeze he felt a twinge of regret for bringing her here. But it was importants she know, she understand, he told himself. It rang a little hallow though. An old man making a young woman cry.

He pushed himself up and walked over to Awen. He stood close to her, his arm brushing her shoulder. "I'm sorry." He said in a whisper. It was really all he could say. Currently where was nothing to do but accept the situation, risks and all. But one had to remember that this was not a game the labs were playing with. He was sure the Lab's hadn't meant to kill these people, but still the graves were there.

Awen didn't look at Richard but moved back to the Dude's grave. She didn't mean to shurg off the man's brush, had it been deliberate, b=and in all honesty the girl probably needed a hug, but she just had to see again. Complications. Such a wonderful guy, full of life and caring. Complications.

"Why not me...?" She asked softly, but not as soft as her earlier rambles. Her breath was uneven and her steeled self was definately completely gone, but no tears fell. Not yet.

"Why not me?" She said again a little louder. "I had complications. I shouldn't be here. I was out for three months, it had to have been serious. Why, why, why am I not here? I've almost died so many times on this god damned island... why am I not here? These people... they were wonderful people. The Dude, Fee, Nathan and I'm sure the others too. Why the hell do they die but not me? I should be dead, not them. It's not fair!" She knew it was irrational, she knew it was survivor's guilt... she'd been dealing with that enough after hearing Alec had lost his legs when she had not.

"Complications." She spat out. "Death by attacking islander."

She shook her head, but her whole body was now visibly shaking as well. "This shouldn't happen! It's not right."

The poor girl couldn't lift her eyes to Richard but she looked up at the grave of Alphonse. The monster. It's his fault. Awen couldn't even fully blame the current Moreau now. No. It was all that god damned bastards fault. Who was he to start down this twisted path? "Who was he to try to play god?" She said outloud not being able to help herself.

"Animals, humans... all being caught up, hurt maimed trapped killed. Who the ******** are they to do this!? It's not fair, no one here deserves this! They're good people...." Awen wasn't one prone to using strong or foul language, if anyone knew her well enough they would know just how crushing this was for her to resort to it. Sadly, Richard didn't know her that well.

Her brain ran a mile a minute, trying to reconcile all of the emotions she felt, her woods definately showed her incoherence and lake of concentration, quickly shifting from sorrow to guilt to anger.

"It's not fair..." She said finally, once again in a soft voice, shaking trembling, wavering. She wrapped her own arms around herself as she sunk to her knees infront of the graves. "None of this is fair..... not changing, not dying, not living..... none of it...."

And finally, finally the tears came. Slowly at first, silently as she stared at the ground then all of a sudden in a rush of sobs and choked noises. Her nose ran and the mucus clogged her breathing. She tried to sniff but it just sent her into a horrible bout of coughing. She doubled over with one hand on the ground and the other holding her chest as she felt she was going to be sick from the coughing, sick from everything.

Richard didn't try to calm Awen as she rapidly moved through guilt, anger and depression. He looked at her, feeling a bit guilty but still glad he had broken through. What could he do about it, this was the reality of the island. It was unfair of course, inhumane and down right rotten at the core. Start with the truth, build a future from there. That's what Erica used to say, so many years ago. Word he was doing his best to live by.

This reflectance was instantly shattered by Awen collaspe and coughing. His eyes bugged, she had been out of the water too long, he realized as he looked at her dry skin. He moved quickly despite the ache in his legs and soreness in his body. Kneeling besides Awen he let her lean into him. rubbing her back. He waited and hoped for the coughing to stop. He wasn't sure if he could carry her with his shoulder.

"Awen, it will be okay. Just calm down." He felt like a hypocrite but what else could one say?

Slowly the coughing subsided, and it was less being out of water and more probably a little bit of the complications lingering. Or perhaps she was just upset enough.

"It won't be okay..." She said taking a deep breath in. "We're stuck here, we're powerless, we can make the best of the situation, hell even making friends with the lab techs.... but it doesn't make it okay. Not then, not now." She was still shaking, but definately a little calmer.

She gave another weak cough before finally looking back up to Richard. Awen's lips slowly curled into a weak smile. "Thank you Richard.... without you I probably would still think it was a hoax... I didn't know the story of Annie... I didn't know... any of it. Thanks.... for making me see the truth."

Richard smiled, glad for the reasurance that he had done the right thing. He rubbed her back a little bit and then stood, offering his hand. "Your welcome. Truth is where I try to start. You can't build a future on falsehood, they don't weather well." He smiled sadly. Awin wouldn't have much of a future here unfortunately. So damn young, all these kids. "Your looking a bit a dry, there is a river not to far from here. Why don't we head there."

Awen definately looked up to the man, in more than just the literal sense. She took his hand and stood up slowly. "That is some really wise words..." She said softly.

She wasn't over grieving, far from. The night will probably be spent with more tears... But for now Awen smiled again, glad to have Richard there, if even sad about him having to be there.

She scratched her shoulder, a piece of skin flaking off and suddenly she grew very aware of her state. Walking in the jungle all the way here not to mention the time spent really dried Awen's skin out and large chunks had started to flake off. She chuckled self consciously and nodded. "Sure, that would be perfect. My flippers are killing me from the hike. You have no idea how much I miss shoes sometimes." She laughed a little as she waited for Richard to lead the way.

"I learned from the best." He sighed a bit but didn't elaborate, instead he fingered his wedding ring. Erica had married a very timid and insecure man. He like to think he had grown since then. "Follow me, I'm afriad its pretty rough terrain, but its only about ten minutes away." He turned and walked toward the woods.

Awen smiled, if a little sadly at the last comment. The young girl wondered how he was doing with the whole island thing. After everything that had happened in his life, now this? After all.... old people usually get depress-ish nostalgic on mainland. The girl didn't even care to guess how bad this must be for the man. Unless, he was one of those to not care anymore? But she doubted it.

He seemed like a very caring man, and Awen was so thankful to have someone like him on the island. She made a mental note she should do something nice for the man, not just as a thank you, but because he seemed to deserve it.

"Ah, ten minutes to fresh cool liquid goodness, this I do not mind." She grinned as she followed him.

Awwwwkwaaard

Awen sighed as she stood infront of the duplex listing where it was posted. She ran her finger down the list. "Gone..." She mumbled softly. "Gone....Gone....Gone..."

Her brow creased and she covered her face with a webed hand. "Why had I never noticed before....?"

Awen had spent most of the day before, after returning home from the graveyard with Richard, at the bottom of the lake trying to just sulking in her solitude. Were she in a better mood she would have noticed her old duplex had been filled by a new islander, but as of the moment, she didn't care.

Brian was just on his way back from the cafeteria, wearing a pair of flip-flops now that his old shoes no longer fit. The flat strips of foamy plastic slapped loudly against his heels as he walked, his hands in the pockets of his rolled-up pants. He looked about himself in a slow, casual way, and as he approached the blue creature standing in front of the duplex listing allowed himself a curious visual exploration. Another fish? He really needed to brush up on his knowledge of marine animals; Brian couldn't identify what exactly this person was supposed to be, and that irked him. The redhead made no comment, no greeting as he walked by, feeling that whoever it was would have no interest in talking to him.

Awen heard the flip flops smacking against the ground as the man approched. She didn't really look from the listing until the man was just passing her. An eyebrow raised glancing at the patches of fur around his body, from what she can see. It was odd to her that an islander didn't say hi or hardly aknowledge the presence of another even if they hadn't met. In the manta's less than happy mood she'd be more than happy to just let the strange islander walk by, but sadly he was walking in the same direction she was going to be going.

As she started walking back, not bothering to catch up, her feet made a similar sound as the man's flip-flops as they hit the ground. She didn't notice, as she was used to it. All the thoughts in her mind at the moment were swirling around the lost islanders.

Brian, too, continued walking. He had to try hard to supress the shocked laughter that bubbled up in his chest when he realised this poor person's feet made the same noise as his awkward footwear. Pushing his mirth back down, he remained silent and mulled over what sort of animals the once-human population of the island were being merged with. And, as he always did, Brian struggled to understand why Feral Labs was doing this. Was it a government secret? A conspiracy? Were they making 'the ultimate soldier'? Or was this to discover a way to use animal DNA to create new vaccines? He hoped it was something like the latter. He prayed that in some way, this place did something good.

Awen slowly started to feel uncomfortable with walking in silence behind a strange islander. Strange in the sense of stranger, because really he seemed very normal by comparison to some. She knit her hands together for some time trying to figure out what to say. Her ears caught the distinct slap against ground and she smiled a little.

"Hah... Never noticed how much like flip flops my fins are..." She said outloud to the man.

Brian had to glance over his shoulder to make sure she'd been talking to him and not some other person. It looked like nobody else was around- she must have been. But what was he supposed to say to that? He struggled, for a moment, socially awkward. After a moment, he managed to say,

"Yeah..." a pause, "Those look like they'd be difficult to walk with." The redhead turned around, walking backwards so that he could face her. He hadn't been sure what the gender of this islander was when he'd first gone by, but now it was fairly easy to identify her as female. He hadn't noticed many females around, but that was probably because he always saw animals as male, and many of the people milling about this place looked more animal than human.

She felt the awkward pause and started to bow her head. When he spoke up again she smiled and looked up. "Just a little.... I've gotten used to them. Oh, um.." She held out a hand. "I'm Awen. Sort of... new to the island are you? Not very but...you don't seem to be very far along..."

Brian shook her hand, his grim firm and even, confident and professional. His insides didn't squirm, thankfully, at the bizarre texture his palm was met with. Goodness, his own hand wasn't even completely human anymore. He wasn't really one to talk about bizarre texture.

"Brian Grant. I've been here a little more than a month... but I guess that's not long compared the amount of time you've been here."

Awen gave a self conscience laugh. "You'd guess right. I've been here.... a little more than a year." She grinned softly as she took her hand back. The dog pads reminded Awen of Avery, that poor boy. She wondered how he was doing. At least she still saw his name on the duplex listing.

"If you don't mind.... why did you come here? Originally?" A question she'd been neglecting to ask islanders for some time, it usually didn't help matters. But the manta girl was grasping at straws at the moment and the question just blurted itself out. She hadn't been this awkward with anyone for a long time actually...

Brian felt rooted to the spot. Suddenly the spotlight was on him, on everything he'd done, on his participation in the creation of this hell. What was he supposed to say? It was one thing to talk about what he'd done before he got here... those details were easy to fudge. But she'd directly asked why. He couldn't just... lie about it.

"I... I'd rather not talk about it, actually," he stuttered, smiling sheepishly- a tacit apology. "I'd really... rather forget." That was the truth. He could just say that. Yes. Good. Hopefully she'd leave it at that.

Awen raised and eyebrow at the man. He had something to hide, did he? She shook her head slowly. "Don't worry about it Brian. I've seen people get to the island because they shot people, got chased by police, ran what is essentially a bordello and everything nasty like that. I won't judge you, I know that even some of the staff were probably duped and tricked here. I mean... Moreau isn't exactly going public with this, he's taking people and subjects were he can get them, whatever you do, seriously, it's no big deal. But if you don't want to talk about it, you don't have to. I just don't want you to think I'd be judging you."

His blood ran cold. "There are murderers here?" This thought overwhelmed the slightest urge he might have had to trust this girl with his secret. If there were people with violent tendences, he didn't want it getting out that he'd helped the labs with this, even if he hadn't meant to, even if he too had been deceived. He valued his life, thankyouverymuch.

Awen tensed instantly and cursed herself. Should she tell the man about Annie? He may be afriad...but he deservedto know, didn't he? "W-well.... only one. And... it was an accident..." Althought Billy trying to kill her wasn't an accident.... nor was Jamal trying to kill Aubrey.... how many other instances has Awen heard about since she arrived? Too many, that she could remember properly.

He muttered something-or-other, rubbing his arm and scratching absently at his furry elbow. "Still," he murmured, "Not the most comforting of thoughts." He'd have to be even more wary of trusting people from now on.

Deciding to change the topic, Brian scrutinized Awen's strange hands and arms and... membranes? "So... what exactly... what DNA were you injected with?"

She sighed softly and winced. She was just putting everyone on edge wasn't she? The manta was thankful that the man was continuing the convorsation and starting passed the awkwardness. But his wording was sort of... off. A thin eyebrow raised at the question. Most islanders asked about what she was changing into...but not 'what DNA were you injected with' most people probably didn't know what was happening, as so many just awoke and changed--at least Awen had.

"Manta ray..." She said a little cautiously as she held up her arms to let him look over the large wing-like fins growing from her wrists to under her arms. "And... you? Some kind of dog right? Your pads feel like a friend of mine's...."

Manta ray! He should have known that. Especially from the protrusions on her head. "African wild dog," he supplied, with a small, ironic grin. "I... I used to study them," he explained, so that she wouldn't think him bizarre for finding this so funny. "I'm a behavioural biologist." I am. Not was.

Awen smiled and remembered Ivy, didn't she want to be some kind of biologist? Awen's eyes barely widened as she remembered the enthusiastic girl. Didn't Sabin say she was becoming a fish too? How far was she... was she okay? Awen pushed these thoughts away.

Again, another strange set of wording on Brian's part. Am? She supposed a lot of people do that at first on the island... he may not be... "You are? That's pretty interesting actually. And... I'm not surprised that you studied them. The labs are.... funny like that."

"I've heard they've got... an interesting sense of humour," he snorted softly, crossing his arms. Brian glances at his toes somewhat guiltily. "I mean, I guess I'm not one anymore, but... it wasn't just my job, it was my passion. It's part of who I am." 'That sounded really dumb,' he told himself. Very corny. Cheesy, even.

"Someone mentioned to me once, actually, that they like to do that. They injected a girl who was afraid of snakes with snake DNA?"

"Yeah..." She said with a shake of her head. "And I was afraid of water, with no other aquatic on the island yet to help me out." She chuckled a bit. "Though I did ask for it.... Moreau got me to come by saying that I'd be so good with water I'd be able to swim as thought I were born to it."

"But why do you keep saying injecting islanders with DNA and the likes. Most people don't really know how the labs pull this off. I mean, lots-after awhile- could probably guess... but you sound very confident in your wording." There it was in the open, and Awen had been quite blunt.

Brian blinked. He certainly hadn't been expecting that. "That's what the letter Richard wrote said was going on. I'm a scientist- I won't call it "transforming" or whatever, because that's not what it is. That makes it sound like you're the one doing it, like you're in control. You're not. Besides," his eyebrow twitched, his fingers pondered his scruffy chin, "Transformation is so cliche'd, so mystical and ambiguous. It implies something magical, or something. Like werewolves or something. It just doesn't sound right for me to say. But... that's just me."

"Well, I disagree.... it is 'transforming'." The girl looked down at herself and then back up at him with a raised eyebrow. "I mean, we may be injected with the serums and DNA and whatnot, but physically we are transforming--regardless of the technicalities of why and how. Even Sabin calls it transforming, or changing, which really, are synonimous."

She sighed. "Most transformations I've heard in books and movies are not self controlled. Werewolves, in most mythology, do not have the choice. Neither do we. And like anything we are transforming, after we get injected with DNA."

He began to feel uncomfortable, as though he were being slowly backed into a corner by this new aquaintence of his. Brian shrugged, pushing down his nervousness. "It's... just a personal preference. To each his own, I suppose."

She grinned a little bit as she studied him. Perhaps a little Sabin had worn off on her but she saw the awkwardness and the look of a cornered animal in his eyes. It was... funny? Interesting? "I suppose...." She said slowly. "But that sounds like lab talk to me." She shrugged and glanceds coyly away.

He began to sweat. Was she a plant? Had that damn doctor Duvert been spreading knowledge of his past? No, no, he was just being paranoid. "W-well I am a biologist. It's just the terminology that's been trained into me over the years, I suppose."

She narrowed her eyes, but not in a threatening manner at all, just letting him know she didn't believe the dog-man. "Alright, alright Brian.... But just so you know- I don't care. Whatever your past, you're one of us now. I didn't look down to Lilly or Newt, Maryke or Jamal, I won't look down to any labbie or islander, unless of course they give me reason to." Awen gave thought of a certain tattooed woman she'd met during her time on the island.

"Labbie?" His eyebrows shot up. "You think I worked in the labs?" Brian hated lying. He wasn't good at it. But he was going to try. "I've set foot in that building once in my life, and I regret it to this day," he said lowly, clenching his teeth. The only way to do this was to tell the truth... the bits of the truth that didn't give away the part he played in making this place. "I spent the last year of my life in Africa, driving around in a jeep with a trank gun and radio-collars. I've never worked in a lab. I'm a feild biologist." Brian was tempted to fish around for his wallet and show her some pictures, but he feared too strong of a denial would be all the evidence she needed.

She chuckled and shook her head. "A little defensive, aren't you Brian?" She sighed heavily and then dropped the smug act, to a genuine look that was more...sincere on her face. "I was just saying whatever your past, and whatever you've done... it doesn't matter. I'm friends with a labbie, I know that they can be good people. The only one I blame is Moreau.... and his god-playing ancestors."

A slow smile came to her lips, not a coy or accusing one, just a simple smile. "But that life sounds really neat. I'd always wanted to visit Africa. Is it as beautiful as people say?"

Bran didn't say anything more on the subject of 'labbies'. He relaxed visibly, however, when Awen brought up Africa. "It's amazing. There's always something amazing about everywhere I've been, but Africa... the serengetti is one of the most fantastic places you could ever go. I spent some time at Ngorongoro, too... I just, I can't describe it. I'm not the best with words. But it really is beautiful." His expression became wistful, nostalgic. "I wonder what they told my teammates. Probably that I got another transfer. It wouldn't be so strange." A gentle sigh escaped between his teeth.

Awen nodded slowly and smiled. "I guess not. I'm still not sure what my friends are thinking. Maybe that I left for therapy, and then moved on from them. I don't know if I'm dead or alive mainland." She chuckled, usually she didn't try to think of her friends, but... it was a moment of weakness. "Ever been to Canada? You really should have seen the great lakes around falltime if you hadn't. Used to go up to the lookout tower and just stare out at the reds and oragnes and yellows...." She sighed softly and smiled.

Brian's eyes glistened with some vague emotion. Sadness? Happiness? "I'm from Canada, actually. The great lakes are nice, but I really loved the smaller ones, up in Algonquin Park. I spent some time there doing research. That was when I was much younger, though, it was mostly lackey-work. But on the weekends when I wasn't working, I'd drive out late at night near where I knew the cloests rendezvous sites were, and howl back and forth with the wolves." He grinned. "Once I scared a deer witless. I'd walked quietly along the road for a bit, and neither of us knew the other was there until I let loose a long howl- and then she came exploding out of the underbrush from the other side of the road and ran a few yards along the ditch and then was gone again. I nearly peed myself, I was so startled."

Awen laughed at the man's story. "Oh that poor deer! And you for that matter, I remember being scared out of my wits once by a huge buck. And Algonquin Park is beautiful too.... I lived only a few hours from there..." She grinned a little. "And glad to see another Canadian! Honestly this island is too American heavy if you ask me. "

He gave a wry chuckle. "I just assumed everyone here would be. Isn't the company running this place American?" Of course it is. He knows it is. But playing dumb might just be another way to clear his name.

"Besides, I'd rather they left my home alone. Not that I'd wish this place on anybody, but..."

She shook her head slowly. "Yeah but like I said, they're taking subjects where they can get them. I hate feeling so out of place, I mean thanksgiving is in October not November. But no one else gets this." She shook her head slowly. "Yeah I know I'd rather it be left alone. But... it's nice to know that I'm not alone too, eh?"

"True," he said, remembering Gaius's mention of Thanksgiving having thrown him for a loop. "We should get together on Victoria Day and paint our faces red and white," he joked, grinning a little. "Demand we be given igloos and dogsleds, and Canadian beer." It was fun to think about something not-so-serious. It was not fun, however, to think that he'd still be here on this island by the time Victoria Day rolled around.

"Oh god yes I missed Molson....and Waterloo Dark..." She grinned a little bit and shook her head. Not much of a drinker, but she did have her tastes. "We should so get together on Victoria Day and hang maple leaf cutouts everwhere." She laughed, but was serious.

"Maybe," he chuckled. Awen didn't seem so bad, once she'd let go of the whole 'I won't judge you' thing. "I was just heading back to my room. Is that where you were going?" He nodded his head down the path. Brian wanted to do a bit of writing to calm his nerves.

"Ah, my room too." She laughed a little. "What a coincedence, eh? But I should probably let you go.... sorry for bothering you."

"Not at all. Pleasure meeting you." And with that, Brian turned and went on his way. Slip-slap, slip-slap. His footware continued to amuse.

"You too." Awen nodded and vered a little bit more towards the long way to the lake.

Awen hesitated looking at the intercom. It had been so long, if not for her for him. Would he even want to talk to her? How much had changed for him?

And for that matter with her. She had started to see the humour in the lab's thanksgiving prank, and was even excited for Richard and what she guessed was happening to him. But the graveyard... and the returning wonder of her next change: would she be stuck not being able to breathe air?

Her stomach knotted as she took a deep breath and finally pushed the intercom button, in hopes that Sabin was free. She could, perhaps, talk to another staff member about a few of the issues...but she'd really rather be speaking to Sabin.

After she pressed the button, there was the mechanical beeping sound, followed by an unusual period of silence. While no receptionist answered the phone, what Awen was unaware of is that she had been added to a short list of people that Sabin had requested to be directly connected to his private line when available. Where as before she had once been on the exact opposite list.

A full minute later, Dr. Duvert's familiar voice, tinged with a hint of surprise... and guilt? answered the line. "Awen..." He seemed a bit caught off guard, as if looking for how to begin. "I... I am glad that you are well again. You gave us all a scare there for a while."

Awen heard no receptionist and only an odd beep. She frowned and shook her head. Maybe they hadn't connected her room to the labs yet? She waited a little while longer but started to turn around. What was she going to do now...?

"Awen..." the voice came from the speaker in a deliciously familiar French accent. The blue haired girl's eyes lit up and she spun back around to the little box.

"S-sabin!" She said, slightly surprised and awkward herself. "So...I've heard? Three months, huh?" The girl decided to start from the beginning, with her original questions. "What... was wrong with me? I don't really remember... just both my gills and lungs wouldn't work."

"It is good to hear from you. And yes, it was a long... struggle you might say. But in the end, we got you stabilized, and your biometrics are looking quite good. Sorry that we relocated you without permission, but we figured that hte change in atmosphere might be for the best."

He steepled his fingers, invisible to Awen with the video off. He knew she had visited the graveyard, and he knew what the word would imply. "You... had some complications with your body attempting to reject the serum's changes. But... we were able to deal with your immune system and slowly urge it to normalcy."

Awen winced at the word complications. She knew after her visit just how close she'd come to the brink. She knit her fingers together nervously. "I'm... I'm glad you were able too.... so I didn't end up..." She paused and shook her head. No, no, she would not go down that path.

"Too bad I missed Halloween." The girl said with more of a smile. "I mean, aside from.... some things.... the party would have been nice to go to again." Her mouth opened to add 'it's where I met you the first time' but she closed it quickly and turned away. She probably shouldn't start down that path again either. Three months was quite the long time after all, on this island at least...

"We did all that we could... for you and... for, well, I know that you visited the gravesite. Everyone is different and reacts to the serums differently. This procedure is so... experimental..." He trailed off, he knew she knew where he was getting at.

"Though it is too bad that you missed the party. It was ... well, in my opinion at least, it was a lovely occasion. Food, drink, lots of people. And I was quite proud of the trail up to the graveyard. Everyone needs a good 'haunted house' or the like."

Awen giggled and nodded. "I have to agree, but I don't think Marshall or Richard were very impressed by it." She paused and then enthusiam came back into her eyes and voice. "OH! By the way, is Richard what I think he is? I mean... your not going through the experiment you started awhile ago with..well with the little ball of fuz I've yet to meet? You didn't... make a serum out of the kitten did you?"

Sabin grinned widely. "He is indeed! He came to me on the intercom to verify it the other day. Ahh, you spoiled the surprise... but then again, I have severe doubts that he'd know what he is even if he reached 100%. He knew he was more than a squid, anyway."

"And Beastie is a wonder, and a sweetheart, but not quite up to full displacer beast potential... but don't tell HIM that."

Awen giggled softly. "Sorry for ruining the surprise Sabin, but I don't know since you gave Tommy that bird in a cage I just haven't been able to get over the 'guess the islander' game! It's fun."

She grinned more at the mention of little Beastie. "Aw, I'm sure the little guy could be quite vicious when need be."

She had missed this. It hadn't been terribly long before she was taken to the labs that they had spoken together, and it hadn't been that long since she was released. But just knowing it had been three months, knowing it had been that long made her miss it.

"See! I think that it is a fantastic game! It's one that can only really be played once per person, so why not enjoy it? Not everyone gets the humor though... but I suppose that that is their loss."

Sabin rested his chin on his hand with a smile. He had forgotten how easy it was to talk to Awen. She was excitable, friendly, and generally at piece with her predicament. Sabin had worried after he saw her expression on camera afer the gravesite how that might have been shaken... but perhaps not.

"Well, every housecat thinks that they are a tiger in disguise, and Beastie can be no exception to that. Particularly with an extra set of claws. But he's a generally nice fellow. "

"I'd like to meet him sometime still you know. I haven't forgotten you said you'd show him to me." Her grin maintained with a little coy glance.

She bit her lip a little as her mind wandered to a couple more serious matters and her grin wavered. She didn't want to interupt the happiness, but she had promised Amaya, and Sid had shaken her....

"Sabin..." Her voice was a little more. "You don't think... after my next change... or any aquatics' last change, that we'd be...stuck underwater, do you? I mean... our adaption should be well enough, right? We're still going to be half human, aren't we? And... and I heard about Alec's... loss of legs... is there anything that can be done? Did he get a wheelchair? Will he?"

Pausing Awen bowed her head slowly. "I didn't mean to ruin the good time... but... I promised Amaya I'd ask..."

"Oh yes - I shall defaintely have to introduce the two of you. Hopefully he won't be a ruddy little b*****d. He can be when he meets new people. "

And there it was... the worry. "Well..... as much as I hate to say it, it is impossible to predict exactly how the changes will affect people. Sometimes very similar serums can take totally different directions between two subj - er- individuals. But, from our predictions at least... and mind you, you are the first aquatic subject who has gotten this far - you should be fairly amphibious. Abotu like you are now, hopefully. And yes, we have been trying to make provisions for Alec. He is also welcome to move into an aquatic duplex if he chooses."

Awen smiled and nodded, relief clear on her face. "I'm glad, I'll tell Alec or Amaya once I see them next about the transfer option..." She chuckled. "I posted a notice on the community message board. You know, warning aquatics about the salt-water thing and... well, offering support and advice and things." Her chest puffed slightly as she went on with the explaination. "I mean... I figured who else would b able to try to help people coping with their probable newfound fear of what water may mean, than me?"

"Speaking of... do you know.. around when I will be shedualed for my last? I mean.. with the down-time I figured you guys don't want to stress my system anymore than nessisary. But will I still be the first to the last stage for us? I don't really mind as far as personal prefference... I just... want to be able to help others through it. I... don't want anyone to be too afraid when they change, you know?" Maybe she did care too much for the islanders. As much as Awen had enjoyed toying with Brian ealier and enjoying the labs pranks, the blue haired girl still deeply cared for the well being of islanders. Being the first aquatic she found a particular responcibility to those that came after her.

"That was kind of you to do. Hopefully some will take you up on your offer if they have questions about their fate. This can be difficult for any to cope with, let alone the added difficulties of an aquatic serum." Sabin responded diplomatically.

"And for your last... we want to moniter your biometrics for a little while longer - to make sure things are stable in the long run before putting your body through the rigormorales of the final change. It is a difficult call if you will be the first, or if our resident octopus will, if you count him amongst the aquatics, though technically he is not a fish."

Awen nodded, as she had expected. "Well, he's not a fish but he is a creature of the water...." She rolled her shoulders, unsure to say whether or not she was happy or not about Billy going first. Of course her own fear wanted her it delayed it as long as possible, and what better lab rat than the rat that tried to kill her.

She squirmed under the issue herself but decided it didn't matter. She was one of the first, which was good enough to help the others. She laughed and shook her head. "Ah, well, sorry for the business."

Changing the subject she grinned. "Ssssoooooo what else have I missed huh? Any good gossip? Are the two finally hitched yet or what?"

"I figured that he would not be one that would likely seek your tuteledge even if he wanted it." Sabin commented sardonically. "Besides, I would rather it be one like him making that first leap than you." There was a kindness in his voice.

"And no apology necessary. And as far as what you missed.." He trailed off. There was a lot she missed. "And not yet, but their wedding date is quickly approaching, Only a matter of time now from the way things are looking."

Awen was taken aback by his comments. He didn't want her to be the first... did he still care? He must. But how much? Was the kindness...just... or something..else? The girl shook her head, now she was just getting ahead of herself. Again, as always.

"Ah I see I see.... but that's it?" She grinned. "No more gossip for me? No scandelous hookups, love affairs? Gee, I guess I hadn't missed much in the three months" She laughed softly.

"I likely shouldn't be one to talk... but watch yourself out there. I .... I know you heard about Angharad. They still have yet to bring her in.." He hesitated admittign that. Sabin didn't like to admit the failings of the labs, but he still found himself talking easily with Awen. With Aubrey having been gone for so long, and then tied up with the wedding plans, and the... difficulties with Sayuri, he was glad for the verbal company.

Awen's face went blank at the mention. "You.... haven't caught Annie?" Swallowing hard the girl's webbed hand moved to her chin, a few fingers gently tapping her lower lip. "Thanks for the warning.... I had assumed that you all had caught her after... well... Fee..."

The frown on his face carried through on Sabin's words loud and clear. "You would think.." There was a frustrated sigh. "She has.... been managing to elude the guards... or kill those that have gotten close."

Awen gave a grim smile. "His creations were his life.... and his death." The manta quoted Alphonse's tombstone. "I hope that doesn't ring true for the future..." Her voice and eyes were filled of worry. "I don't care so much for Moreau but..." I care for you were the words she left unsaid. And rightly so. Sometimes Awen wondered how much Sabin knew or suspected.

"Don't worry, Awen. The technology and security that we have now are... well, lightyears ahead of the Victorian science that the Senior Moreau was dealing with." Sabin spoke, sounding truly confident.

"And... I can take care of myself. You don't need to worry about me."

Awen blushed and looked to the ground. So, he had read her unspoken words. She wondered still of what he thought of such words.

"Well... I do hope the security holds out." She sighed softly. "Honestly though... you are one of my better friends on the island Sabin. Most dependant it seems sometimes. I know that a lot, if not most, of the islanders do not like the staff in general and least of all not you." She left unsaid that the exception was Moreau, because that was just a given. "I do worry sometimes Sabin. Because just one on one... I don't know how well you'd fair with some of the more aggressive islanders. Like Annie." Or Jamal, or Chubbs from last they spoke Sabin may of well have been the devil to that man, or Zach either. So many predators that could easily overcome a human being, she couldn't help but worry for one who meant so much to her.

There was a pause after her admission of friendship. Sabin... remembered Awen's feelings for him. He remembered not wanting to lead her on, give her ideas about a relationship that Sabin was quite honestly not sure if he wanted to even touch on given his position... and mindset here on the island. Even though Awen wasn't lacking the communication barrier, and even if she was excited about some of the same things... she was young... she was relatively naieve.... and they had had issues about understanding in the past.

But.... she could still be a friend, at the very least. Even a man like Sabin did need that.

"I do not make many friends here.... I... I am glad that you think well of me, however. And at least, I do not think that the islanders could break the security and make it into the labs. We have safety precautions that should render even those like Chubbs or Jamal less dangerous." Sabin didn't want to elaborate - especially how Annie was serving to dish out more than she was taking from teh guards. That even after switching to live rounds after giving up on taking her alive, that she was still managing to elude or take shots. But she was different... though she was still loose.

Awen knew what she said would maybe reveal too much, outloud anyway. The pause made her nervous and she started to fidget. But she did say friend, right? She hadn't pushed anything too far, had she? Had her words been stronger than the wording of friendship? But... it was natural for people to care strongly about their friends, and hope they are safe. Isn't it? Damnit.... she'd probably pushed it too far.

"Well, I know. I just worry sometimes. Everyone worries for their friends sometimes, right? Or is it just a Canadian thing?" She grinned a little trying to add a joke, perhaps ease the awkwardness she caused. She hadn;t heard of Sayuri, much less what had happened between them, but she didn't have to. The hesitation in his voice said enough.

If not he had eyes for someone else, he at least did not have eyes like that for her. She had suspected this, of course, after Aubrey and Sabin's arguement in the arcade the idea was concrete in her mind. But still she... couldn't help what she felt. And honestly had no alternatives. She was a good friend, but not... good enough. A complex she usually didn't have, but the break up with Jamal still effected her, without her even realising it.

There was a genial chuckle. "Non, that is a very... human thing in general, Awen. People care for and look out for their friends. Real ones at least."

Sabin leaned back, watching the manta's expressions on the camera.

At the word non Awen smiled. She loved the French language and Sabin rarely let himself slip into Franglais. She was also glad she heard a chuckle from him, that meant, she hoped, her joke had worked. "Thanks Sabin. For being my friend..."

Again a potentially awkward moment coming up so Awen decided to avoid it. "And oh! Speaking of Canadian! Me and Brian had been talking earlier about the holidays on the island, the Thanksgiving and whatnot is all based on the American shedual. Which we understand because a lot of islanders are American. But... we were wondering if we could get decorations--and probably red and white facepaint-- for Victoria Day? It's a long ways off, but we just thought of it. It would probably mean a lot to the Canadian islanders. If we can't have snow damnit we may as well have a celebration of other sorts, right?"

"You are welcome. I should extend the same thanks to you, Awen. Not many have done me the courtesy, as I know you are aware."

"And I see no reason why not! I shall put through an order to have supplies sent your way if you like. And you can confuse the hell out of all of the national-centric Americans. "

Awen laughed loudly and grinned. "Yes, that will be priceless! Oh... and do you think you could put in a personal order for me? A bottle of real maple syrup?" While they were on the subject of Canadian things she might as well... "My friend used to have trees that her family tapped, I helped and got some in return. I kind of got spoiled with the real stuff I suppose, and I'm just wondering if a small bottle would be okay?" Stupid Brian, making her miss friends and home.

"Hey, I am sure that that would be no problem." THere was typing on a keyboard as Sabin made and flagged the order. "It might take about a week for the REAL stuff, but we'll be able to get it."

Awen gave a little arm pump and 'yes' of success. She smiled broadly. "Thanks Sabin. But hey, I should probably let you go, you probably have some work to do." Her eyes shifted towards her TV with a sheepish grin. "And I've got three months of video games to catch up on."

There was another laugh. "Those video games do not play themselves, no? Have fun, Awen. And thank you for the call. I do have work to do - but I do not mind taking time away from it to chat with you."

She smile sincerely and nodded. "And I'd gladly give away gaming time to talk to you Sabin. When ya like you know where to find me!"

"I do indeed. Take care, and it was good catching up. Stay safe." And with that, and a lingering look at her smiling face, Sabin cut the connection. Strangely, he felt good. The conversation was a welcome change.

Two complicated girls

Awen smiled up at the sky watching a few of the white clouds drift by against the blue background. It was nice just to sit in the sunlight. Her body may dry out quicker in the direct sun, but that's what her trusty water bottle was for.

The manta was definately in a good mood after her talk with Sabin the other day. It was amazing how that man could ease the pain of even such a horrible thing as the grave yard. Awen never thought consciously about the issue whether that was a bad thing or a good thing at all, but she was happy. Which is what matters, is it not?

Lauren hobbled over out of Nita's duplex, wishing to feel some sun on her pelt. She had seen a very nice spot by a tree the other day and planned on going there.

Her mp3 player was blaring in her ears, playing Dresden Dolls Girl Anachronism. The song seemed to be a theme to Lauren's life and many times Amanda Palmer seemed to be singing about Lauren in the song. It was especially true now with the way Lauren looked.

I'm really NOT the carefulest of girls now am I? Lauren asked herself smiling softly. Despite the music in her iPod shouting out Lauren felt at peace and thankful of her life. Being close to death does that to one.

She hobbled by the tree and was surprised to see Awen, now changed so much, watching the clouds. "Awen?" Lauren asked. It had been forever since she had seen the blue haired girl, her heart still tugged a tiny bit but she knew she was over her little crush. Lauren had Nita now.

Awen looked up from her place, or rather down from the clouds, at a distantly familiar voice. Her eyes settled slowly on the nice blond hair and vaguely same colour coat. But the smile and greeting was stuck in the moment as she noticed the girl's patchy hair and fur.

Concerned, the manta ray stood up immediately. "Lauren, oh my gosh, are you okay?" Her peace was gone. The images of the graveyard and old friendly faces returned. So she was not the only one with a close call? Or had the mongoose gotten into a fight with Annie?

The poor girl was confused, not just with the situation, but with her ever present conflict. Islanders or Labs? She felt compassion and caring, sorrow for those hurt or lost and hate for the labs for putting people through this. But the labs did so much for her, opening up her world, and few seemed to be genuinely caring for the subjects. The monster was Moreau, but how much blame could be shifted to the others? She may seem unpredictable or moody, changing from one to the other.... but that is because that's how she feels as well.

But at this moment all that Awen was concerned about was her old friend Lauren.

Lauren was startled a bit by Awen's concern. She reminded herself that she looked horrible. It was a natural reaction. She reached her clawed nail down to turn the ipod off. "I'm fine, I'm recovering fast now." She smiled towards Awen, "It's nothing really. It's good to see you." She reached out for a friendly hug.

"I'm just glad your okay..." Awen stepped forward to hug her old friend. God, it had been awhile hadn't it Almost not since the blackout... only a few times after that, wasn't it? If any...

A small smile twitched to her lips. Just glad for the old face. She gestured to where she just had been. "Would you care to sit?"

She moved and sat a little off the center of the tree, giving Lauren enough room to lean against it also. Looknig at Lauren she decided that it had to have been complications. Even the spunky girl probably wouldn't be able to stand an encounter with the wolf. Besides, she hadn't changed from last Awen saw her. Awen was glad that they seemed to be able to deal with the complications still arising in some characters.

"It's good to see you again..."

Lauren went to sit down, "Yeah I'm fine" She set her cane, which had the head of a skull on the top, down next to her slowly sitting onto the ground. It took a ton of effort to do anything and was a bit painful but the pain killers helped a ton for Lauren's current situation. In fact, it made her much more pleasant and less angry around others.

"It's good to see ya too. So what's been up with manta-girl recently?" Lauren asked playfully. Her gaze went to the clouds that Awen had been staring out. It was a gorgeous day on the island and tropical birds where chirping loudly. Occasionally she could make out one that had caught onto the islanders speaking. One violently exclaimed, 'Moreau sucks, Moreau sucks CAAWWW!' but even that didn't make her angry.

Awen was about to delve into some idle chit chat or catching up story but she jumped hearing the damned bird caw. "Holy geez..." She looked over her shoulder and around to see where it came from but found nothing. She hadn't been sure if it was an islander or a bird. Seeing no oversized feathered being she assumed the latter.

Settling herself back into a relaxed state Awen smiled and chuckled softly. "Damn birds...." Although she couldn't say she didn't agree, she refrained for Lauren's sake. "Oh well... I just got out of the labs. Sabin says I had some complications with the serum. Lungs and gills kind of fighting with eachother before both just huffed and refused to work." A simplified version, but good enough.

She nudged her old friend gently. "I assume something similar? Complications... I mean." Did Lauren know of the graveyard?

Lauren just laughed at the bird, "Pathetic waste of some islanders time," She thought outloud.

Lauren looked a bit concerned, "That sucks a** Awen." She nodded, "Yeah kind of. They say I'm refusing to change, I went into a coma for four months, lost fur and everything. It's shitty whatever it is. Maybe my body wants to be the old Lauren again, but my mind sure as hell doesn't." Lauren was likeing who she was becomming and hated herself so much change was the best thing. Had she stayed human and survived the streets she would be too far into drugs, probably have some std, and definately become a sociopath. She already had some sociopathic tendancies but those had faded with the mongoose's genes.

"It just ******** sucked, I don't remember much but yeah it worried the crap out of Nita." That was the worst part of it in Lauren's eyes, "That and I STILL can't be too active. But I'm recovering." Lauren signed hating herself and her body at the momment. Why couldn't it just obey what it had been told?

Awen nodded slowly and gave a small frown hearing about the coma. "Well... it's over now. The both of us are getting better... And back in our own duplexes, getting back to things...."

She smiled brightly and decided that Lauren probably didn't know about the graveyard any more than Awen had. She wouldn't tell her right now.

"It's good to see you again Lauren... It's been awhile. Eerr... not counting the months both of us were out, I mean."

"Um, briefly I believe." Not that Awen hadn't heard of Lauren and Nita as a couple. Small island, news goes around. "Maryke thought that her tail was a fashion accessory." She laughed softly and wondered briefly how the girl was going.

"But hey I should've come to you too you know." She shrugged a little bit. She smiled and was honestly glad that Lauren found Nita.

"Hey I got a new duplex eh? It's half pool!" She grinned a bit. "Which actually leads into the lake too. "

"Yeah well, life does s**t like that I geuss." Lauren replied. "A lake? NO WAY! That's too ******** cool, I ought to stop by sometime and see it!" It was amazing the amount that Awen was pampered by the staff although Lauren never understood why. Maybe she learned the whole ask and thou shall receive rule that other islanders never seemed to grasp.

"So your lungs and gills aren't fighting again are they?" She asked Awen with concern.

"I'm glad your taken care of." Lauren replied to Awen. It was nice, the aquatic islanders seemed to have it the hardest. That and the extreme predators. But at least the island was trying to make it the best for them as possible and Awen had been out for a while now.

"Do you like being aquatic?" Lauren asked with small concern. It never occured to her until now how horrible it would be. Lauren was thankful her and Nita were both mammals.

"Oh my god!" Awen eyes just lit up at the question. "You have no idea! It is so amazing.... Flying through the rivers at speeds I'd never thought possible, being able to explore and just sit at the bottom of the lake in those caves for as long as I wanted to be alone, you really should see how high I can eve jump from the water, or how it is to look out at the clouds from under the water."

Like a giddy kid on Boxing Day describing to someone what they got for Christmas...

Lauren laughed at Awen's sudden excitement. "I really have no idea do I?" Her world really hadn't changed much besides the sudden need for socialisation. Even that really just reinforced what Lauren wanted deep inside. "That sounds wicked awesome! I haven't changed that much and never will. You have a completely different world."

Lauren looked at her claws, she wondered if she would go towards digging later on. She could sort of dig now but not that well. She was still mostly human
.

Awen nodded and then wrapped an arm around her friend and squeezed. "Well I dont think I want you to change anyway. I think yer good just the way you are."

She smiled and sighed a little. "But I wish I could show you things from down there...." Shaking her head slowly she gave a soft laugh. "Man, have I changed or what...?"

Lauren wiggled Awen's head things, "Definately, and you have wings!" She pointed at her wing flaps. But at least you don't have creepy orange eyes!" Lauren winked at Awen playfully. "Would be awesome but eh I can still snorkle and MIGHT convince the labs for a scooba suit so I could. Wouldn't that be hilarious, me in scooba gear!"

Lauren layed back folding her arms around her legs and looked at the clouds some more, "I think I see a rat right there" She pointed up.

"Hey!" Awen protested. "I like your eyes! But yeah snorkling gear would be such a good idea!"

Awen didn't lay down up tilted her head up to the sky. She couldn't see the rat cloud anyway but got to looking. "I see some kind of dragon..." Awen smiled and laughed. She hadn't played this game in ages.

"Once I'm up to it." Lauren was tireing again, her eyes drifting. She couldn't stay awake very long and this had been too much excitement. Still she felt like a child trying to stay awake because they were afraid they would miss something. Sleeping annoyed and scared her right now. She was afraid of falling back into a four month oblivion and not knowing it.

"Oh I see it!! But it's turning into a one legged aradillo right now... with squid tentacles!" Lauren said pointing and laughing. "Hey you know I think I see a manta ray right there, but it's wearing a bow on it's head." Lauren pointed up lazily as she yawned.

"Whaaat? No way that's a manta! Looks more like a sting ray to me...." She grinned. "With a bow on it's head."

Glancing over towards Lauren she gave a slightly worreid frown. "Hey there, you alright? Tired already?"

Lauren yawned. Pain was also starting to fade into reality but she couldn't take those damn pills again for another two hours. "I'm tired yeah. I sleep a lot right now. Can't move a lot. I'm a useless lump for the most part. I hope Nita doesn't hate it." She signed. "I should go pack to sleep" She made a slightly pained face trying to get up.

Awen put a hand on Lauren's arm and gently helped her up. She knew that the girl liked to act tough but sometimes people need the help.

"Nita doesn't hate it." Awen said softly as she wrapped the mongoose girl into another firnedly hug. "She's probably worried, but that just shows she cares. I don't think that girl could hate you if Moreau himself tried to engineer a serum to make her."

She sighed a little bit and let her friend go. "Take care Lauren. I'll be looking forward to snorkling."

Lauren waved, grabbing her cheesy skull cane, "I hope she can't." She giggled through the pain, "You too Awen." Lauren waved and wobbled back to the duplex where she could fall into a nap or just lay down for a bit drawing or reading.

Richard

It had been three days since Richard's latest "progression," He was coping well enough, he could hold a pen again, shuffle a deck of card and generally get through the morning routine without stabbing himself but fastening buttons was still a bit of hit or miss affair. His shirt was closed but it was now missing a few buttons. It wasn't immediately noticable as his shirt was now several sizes too large for him. The loose shirt unfortunately called attention to the size of his chest, even through he had wrapped it with ace bandages, compressing it. While not exactly comfortable it had reduced the profile of his chest to where it had been during his previous stage.

While the damage to Richard's prided manual dexterity was the most obivious difference to Richard's life. He had noticed some new habits. Nothing that distressing, he had no urge to take a bite out of anyone but his sudden change in sleeping schedule was odd.

Richard had taken to napping. Usually in the afternoon right after lunch. It didn't matter what he had intended on doing or where he was. It inevitiably resulted in him snoozing for an hour or two.

This was such an afternoon. Richard had taken a walk down to the lake, actually intending to try and keep moving and avoid a nap but soon found a tempting shady spot under a tree. Reguardless of a promise to just rest for only a moment, Richard was soon snoozing lightly in the shade, his tail curling around his mid section.

Awen grinned from the water softly, looking up at the slumbering man by the shore. From her position she actually didn't notice any of the man's changes. She dove under the water and swam aways.

Positioning herself to look up at the waters surface she grinned. Just a casual joke.... With that Awen kicked as hard as she could and propelled herself upwards. Within moment Awen pushed herself out of the water. With a final kick she sent a splash of water in Richards direction.

"Wakey wakey!" She exclaimed before falling with another splash into the water.

Sound that came from the man as he snapped awake was an inhuman growl. He came up bearing teeth and claws. The fierce expression soon faded, replaced by confusion as he search his surroundings. He spotted Awen by the shore. "Awen?"

It hadn't quite registered yet that his clothing was soaked, including his white shirt.

Awen gave the man a youthful grinn and waved. She couldn't help but laugh. "Sorry! You just were aski--" A look of puzzelment crossed the mantas features as she looked the old man up and down.

"Did you loose weight?" She tried to put it nicely, and under normal circumstances it probably would be. But she noticed a binding job when she saw it... after all she used to crossplay at conventions. "And... are those boobs?"

Richard looked down. Awen's splash had displaced a surprising amount of water and he could now feel the water seeping through his clothing. The baige ace bandages were clearly visable through the shirt. He immedatially crossed his arms infront of his chest. His cheeks flushed red.

Damn kids. Pyroth was one thing, person but Richard really did not want the second part of his condition to be general knowelege among the villagers.
"N-no." He struggled for an alternative explaination. They weren't true mammaries, they didn't quite have the weight.... yet. "Um, just a little uneven weight loss." He was usually a far better lier but Awen had caught him completely off guard.

Awen waded in the water pensively, she bit her lip softly and decided to believe it. Stranger transformations have taken place, being uneven often happened to people around this stage.

"Alright, alright. I'm sorry Richard. I was just teasing anyway." She smiled sweetly and moved closer to shore, she didn't go out of the water, but moved into the shallows enough that she can lay with her head and shoulders above the water.

"Sorry for splashing you and whatnot...." She smiled a little. "And hey, the changes are better than any weight loss program huh?"

She believed that? Richard thought that was highly unlikely, but maybe it had been a good line after all. Or Awen just being polite.

Richard really wasn't ready to talk alot about his change but he welcomed any subject that would get the conversation off his chest, so to speak.

He laughed nerviously and flashed uneasy grin, his ears twitching just a bit. "Lost over 70 pounds since I got here. You know, it might have even fixed my ticker too."

"Well I wouldn't be surprised if it did!" She chuckled a little bit.

Suddenly she snapped her fingers and grinned. "Oh hey, I never got to tell you this, but that bulletin board idea was genious! I've been checking it every so often and it seems that quite a few people have started using it. Your's truly included!"

She certainly was in a much better mode than last time Richard had seen her.

Now Richard did grin at that. He was proud of that message board, it seemed to be serving its purpose. "Yes I saw that. Opening a support group? Supplying the youthful enthusiasm?" It was really hard to be grumpy and bitter in the face of Awen's happiness. Still his arms remained in their awkward position.

"I put that thing up over a month ago though. Working on a new project now." Well He had been before he changed. He supposed he should start again.

Awen laughed and nodded. "I'm trying anyway. I mean... I don't know if I told you but I used to be afraid of the water. So, I figure, who better to help islanders cope with their changes than me?"

"And a new project?" Her expression turned curious. "Care to let your favorite manta ray in on the secret?"

Richard consider her seriously. There was a risk there, Awen seemed to be overly friendly with Sabin. On the other hand he could really use some help if she was interested. Would Awen go running to Sabin if she dissaproved?

The intent was to help the villagers know what they were dealing with. She had understood at the graveyard, would she understand now?

"Hrrm, that would depend on if you were willing to ruffle a few feathers, and maybe an occiasional labcoat." Richard smirked a bit.

Hearing the last remark Awen looked around quickly. A frown set on her face she moved closer. "What kind of ruffling are we talking about Richard?"

The frown on the girl's face was not one of disapproval-but of concern for the man.

Richard tryed to look unconcerned but the effect with him still tightly hugging himself was more than slightly comical. Still he continued. "Ah I am perhaps being a bit melodramatic. In my last conversation with Sabin, he was clear to point out that I was no longer a reporter. However, where there is a printer, there can be a press." Richard had decided that getting the thing started would be far worth while for now than building infrastructure independent of the labs, he could work on that later.

Awen visibly relaxed and slipped back further into the water. "That's a great idea though Richard!" She bit her lip and tilted her head a little. "But I don't see what all there would be to report on. I mean, it's not like lots happens on the island. Nothing news worthy most of the time anyway."

The girl was happy that this, at least, wasn't risky at all. Awen wondered what she would have done if it was a little mroe extreme-as Fiona's plans had been.... But this was rather harmless, the labs would see it as such.

Richard was not about to tell the Manta girl about something about an escape attempt. He only had one so far and even he would be the first to admit it that hell would have to freeze before it could work.

"Admititly it be more of a community newsletter. A extension of the bulletin board. Tackling things from octopus theater to keeping track of our friends in the Ivory tower so to speak. There are plently of things that happen around here that are serious too. The graveyard for one, and I believe Ambrose mentioned something about a lock out, a bit of island history." He smiled, watching Awen reactions.

Octopus theatre? She has to start keeping up with the bulletin board. She hadn't been for a few days... And keeping tabs on the labs? Easy enough for Awen anyway, but she wondered who would be giving the newsletter that sort of news? There was Lauren... but she doubted it. Awen may have offered, but she wasn't sure that Sabin would be too pleased. Or worse, Moreau- who may decide to cut off communication between ehr and Sabin. After all Awen learns a air bit of that man's dirty laundry from the silver haired friend on the inside.

"Ah... the lockout...." Awen chuckled a little. "Hope they don't pull that again...." Although it did help Awen out a lot. Learned a few things about herself that time. Hehe... boar goes smoosh...

She smiled and nodded up to Richard. "Really though that sounds like a good idea. If you need any help I'm on board. Oh! Hey, I know a girl on the island who is a great photographer. She may have some old photos of the islanders you could check out? Joliette, have you met her?"

Richard nodded, having Awen on board could be helpful. So much for having a disruptive newletter though. "It will be helpful you have some of the original islanders onboard. Fact checking and all." His face turned serious, "If you wouldn't mind, could you write something about the islanders that have passed on? I know that might be difficult for you but I'd feel much more comfortable writing that article if I knew something about them."

Richard smiled a bit at the mention of Joli, he hoped she was doing better, she hadn't taken up his offer of assistance though. "I have met Joli, just once so far. She seemed interested but hrrm, how to say it, she went as far as Pyroth and is having difficulties."

"Oh..." Awen frowned a little hearing the news of Joli. "That's really bad...." Making a mental note Awen told herself to go visit the poor girl. It had been a long time since she'd seen her... or Chubbs for that matter. She wondered how the teddy bear is doing.

"Well, anyway, this newsletter is a good idea." She nodded. "But I bet it'll be more than a community newsletter if you meant to ruffle feathers." She grinned softly. Awen was about to go into a long talk about her aligences and whatnot but she thought better of it. "Just you be careful, alright?"

"Just seeing if I could get your goat." Richard chuckled, kinda. He'd settle for just doing something remotely useful at the moment. If he could actually make it into something a bit more then great.

"I'll be fine." He stood, pulling his jacket around himself.

Awen raised a disbelieving eyebrow and shook her head. "I'm young, Richard, but I'm not stupid... You've got something planned in that brain of yours, and I know it. But, I won't pry...."

She smiled slightly as she saw him get up. "Going home?"

"Yes indeed. Some of us don't thrive on water." Note to self, get some darker colored shirts. With a wink and a wave, he turned and headed up the path, tail lashing behind him.

Damn enuthazism... its catchy.

Awen grinned and waved back. "See you around Richard!"

Pausing pensively Awen let out a soft "Hmm...." Turning around the girl dove back into the water and headed towards the entrance of her own duplex.

Bobby had been avoiding 'civilaztion' for awhile. She slept in her duplex, but that was usually the extent to her village life... well, and taking massive amounts of food from the cafeteria; but that was a given. She hadn't even seen Pyroth since Halloween, and the pig had no idea how long ago that was. The animal taking over, all Bobby really cared for was the here and now. The future, and even the past, have been regularly quited.

Today, the pig found herself strolling along the river. While water was not her friend, the placid river didn't hold the irrational fear the beach had over her. In fact, it was somewhat calming... and who knew what she might do. Maybe she'd catch a fish!!!!

Actually, that sounded like a grand idea. She hadn't tried that in awhile... not sense.... well, when she was human; that was another life.

Going around, Bobby found a strong, thin branch. Digging in her basket, she found some thin string. Putting things together, the pig held on to a fairly decent fishing pole. Now, the bait..... she dug in the ground with her hooves and maneuvered a worm out of it and onto her string. She didn't know if it would work, but she'd try.

Going to the edge of the riverbank, the woman sat down next to her basket, legs and hooves draped in the water. She hummed quietly, a song deep in her mind but if she tried to think about it, the melody would escape her. Every now and then, Bobby reached over and grabbed a snack.

What a gorgeous day.

The manta ray had been slowly making her way up the river when she suddenly noticed a worm wriggling on a string ahead of her. She glanced quickly at her surroundings and realised that she must be in a certain kitty-squid's fishing spot.

Awen smiled as she surfaced not too far away from shore, just close enough to rest her feet on the bottom of the river. "Hey Richar--" She paused mid-wave as she realised the islander sitting on the bank wasn't her old friend.

She heard the splash of displaced water. Jerking her head unbalanced her a bit, and Bobby flailed to prevent from falling in. After he recovery, the pig blinked in surprise. The face was new, the animal was definitely new.... she had no idea who that person was.

Recognition not registering, the woman stared blankly, "Uh, hello....." She completely didn't realize her fishing string was taut and tugging in her hooves.

"Oh gosh, I'm sorry!" Awen let her hand down with an embarassed smile. "I just thought you were my friend Richard, he always fishes here. Didn't mean to disturb you."

The girl looked the islander over slowly somewhat thankful her animal had been a more graceful one. But still she smiled cheerfully. "I'm Awen, it's nice to meet you."

It seems she'd missed meeting so many people, not only in her three months under but in her seclusion before hand. Awen had seen the duplex roster just recently so she didn't have to hazard a guess at how many people she hadn't met yet.

Bobby broke free of her blankness when the pole gave one last twitch. She pulled the string out of the water. Her worm was gone and the string chewed through. After a grunt and scowl, she set the fishing pole aside and turned to the newcomer.

"It's.... okay." she said slowly. Ignoring the manta's eyes as they took in her... changes, the woman smiled gently, "Likewise, and I'm Bobby. What are you doing... out here?" The pig looked around. It was obvious the girl needed water, so it made sense. But, she didn't quite know what to say.

So, when she got a little nervous she did one thing: eat. Pulling out a sandwich, Bobby 'nibbled' on it.

"I'm just out on one of my many swims. It's a good way to clear your head and think things over, you know?" She smiled as she frowned up at the broken string.

"Oh no, I made you loose your fish didn't I...?" She shook her head sadly. "Sorry about that."

Bobby's smile broadened, "No, not really... cannot swim anymore, I sink like a rock. Which is strange, for usually, ahh.... blubber makes you float." It was true. At least, she was sure the bigger one was with fat, the better you float.... she couldn't recall where she heard that.

Looking at the stricken face, Bobby waved her off with a hoof, "Don't worry about it. I was just fishing more for the activity, not the results. I already brought my food." She patted the basket affectionately.

"Are..you sure?" Awen said hesitantly and looked around at the water. "I'm sure I could catch a fish for you no problem if you wanted it." A broad smile caught on her lips she looked back up to the woman on the bank.

Awen had heard the tale of fat floats as well so she was surprised when she heard the pig woman couldn't. It made some sense that she couldn't swim, what with her hands being hooves that didn't seem to be very good at displacing water, she could hardly believe that the woman sunk. But she wouldn't comment, it may come off as rude or something.

Bobby chuckled low in her throat, "No, that's alright. That is sweet of you, though. I appreciate the thought."

Finishing off her sandwich, the pig licked the crumbs off her hooves. She reached over, dug in the dirt, and pulled out another worm to tie onto to the string. Plopping it in the water, she looked back at Awen. Always looking for gossip, and maybe some match-making, Bobby smiled with a twinkle in her eye, "So, who's Richard?" She had never met an Islander with that name.

Awen smiled and nodded as she watched the pig owman dig in the dirt for another worm. Really though that would be handy for a fisherman, and Awen bet, the woman could make a decent farmer--if the island allowed for such a thing, which it sadly did not.

"Richard?" Awen echoed and chuckled a little bit. "He's just an older islander that is looking to stirr up some trouble. Did you see the community message board in town? He set that up, and he's expressed interest in starting a newspaper, letter, thing, for the island." The girl shook her head slowly. "He's pretty interesting in his transformations too. I believe he's turning into a misplacer beast, it's this six legged cat with squid arms coming from it's shoulders. Kind of neat, I think it's from some old lore or Dungeons and Dragons or something like that. Sabin's idea, I'd imagine...." Bobby wanted gossip after all and Awen was one of the innocently chatty types.

Bobby took balanced the pole precariously in one hoof and used the other to pick at a stray piece of meat caught in her teeth that was starting to bug her. Her mind was still sharp, though, and she heard Awen.

When the manta ray finished, the pig frown slightly, taking the pole in both hooves once more. "Actually... all of that information is new to me. I haven't been active in the community." The news settled in. She was a little bitter about a newspaper... it would be nice to write again... heck, even typing would be welcome. Her hooves didn't even allow for that anymore.

"Displace beast?" Bobby mumbled. Now, that was something she had never heard about. Anything mythological or lore was not exactly in her mind of hobbies. "D and D? My son used to play...." the pig paused, as an image flashed of him smiling as he drug his mother into the gymnasium. She had hands then. Bobby shook her head a little, "he used to play that..." she smiled sadly at the memory.

Awen returned the sad smiled at regretted stirring up such a memory in the woman. "Some... of my friends used to play too." She offered her own memory in sympathy. "I never quite got into it, but I hung out with them sometimes when they played."

She shrugged a little bit and moved away from the hurt memories of the past. "Well, I haven't been very active either. From what I know the island stopped being a community a little while after I arrived. Everyone's kind of off in their own little groups and coping with their changes on their own or caught up in their own little mini-dramas." -and oh how Awen knew the mini-dramas- "No one really has time or way to see a community around here. I think that's what Richard is trying to establish. Some kind of community instead of just a smattering of people."

Bobby scratched behind her ear as she thought that over. Her eyes flashed angrily; there was one person in particular that she would NOT want to have to be "community-ified" with. The pig still blamed him for everything. Why not? If it wasn't for him she wouldn't be here... never mind some of the better results the Island brought.

"It is a noble idea, sure... but I think there are too many people here. Knowing from experience, any more than about three people will result in groups that are more difficult to overcome." That was the cop talking. She'd seen it all the time, and it didn't matter who the participants were. "Though... I don't think time is an issue...." Bobby piggishly snorted unintentionally. "We have all the time in the world here.... that's why I'm fishing," she winked.

Awen smiled at the larger woman's wink. She didn't seem entirely displeased with the island, which made Awen quite happy to see. Everyone had their qualms with the island, inhabitants, or staff members, but few ever expressed- verbally or otherwise- any kind of positive effect that had come from the island. With the woman's light hearted wink Awen figured this woman also was looking at the better aspects of life here.

"Well, as in any community not everyone will participate either. But I've seen a lot of progress even on the message board. I mean.. even Billy, I don't know if you've met him, but he's never been a very...community friendly type of guy... anyway even he is starting to post things on the board and make an effort. That's quite the improvement from last time I saw him." In a paranoid withdrawl supor trying to kill her.

At the mention of Billy, Bobby's face hardened. Her pupils dilated in anger, and her hooves started to 'clench' as best they could. She looked around with a growl. Her dark, firey gaze went back to Awen. "Yes, I know Billy!" she spit his name out through tight teeth.

If it wasn't so much work right now, the pig would stand up and stalk away right then and there. He was one of the main reasons she avoided the village as much as possible. Sure, she would eventually see him again... but if he never showed his face ever again it would be too soon. "I am not sure you want him in any community."

Bobby's eyes still held a kind of feverish gaze. If it were a flight or fight situation, she would fight. She didn't mean to scare Awen, but.... if had been awhile since the pig had to deal with the thought of Billy.

"You have no idea what he can be like," the pig growled again. She knew his type. He was a criminal. Sure, some people had valid excused for thier actions... but not Billy. "I wouldn't believe anything I hear about him. The only thing that may 'tone' him down would be put behind bars where light no longer enters. And if he went clinically insane, all the better.... for then he could be put in a padded room where he could no longer harm anyone else!"

Bobby didn't believe for one moment that Billy was trying to fit in from a part of his loneliness. He had to have some ulterior motive.... something. If she saw him, maybe she'd get it out of him. His spitting can only go so far....

Awen sighed softly and moved back towards the center of the river, she just wanted to feel more of the cool water's current running over her after such a heated epression of hate. Everyone was entitled to their own opinion, and even though Awen's wasn't terribly high of Billy either she didn't think he deserved as the pig lady had been describing. Not to mention that it wasn't how the island worked.

"I'm sorry I upset you." She said just loud enough for the woman to hear. "Maybe I'm a bit of an optimist and try to find the good in people, allowing for even the worst to change." Except for perhaps Moreau, that one she'd have to see to believe. "But you believe what you want, maybe you're right." She shrugged softly and turned back around.

"Listen... I'm just going to go on my way." The poor blue haired girl seemed terribly deflatted by their turn of convorsation. "Enjoy your fishing." Without another word Awen sunk back into the depths of the river. She honestly couldn't stand such negativity at the moent and didn't care to prolong their convorsation anymore.

Just when she thought the island could be taking a turn for the better... Why do people have to hang onto all of their spite and hate? It just made no sense to her....

Bobby watched the manta ray siddle off. Her anger bubbled and grew inside her. Images of all of children flashed through her mind... children she'd never see again... a family that would never know truly how much she loved them. In the criminal justice world, there simply was not much good: corrupt convicts, corrupt cops, corrupt officials.... everywhere. You could not get of out it, the human race was simply too good at betrayal, crime, and murder. Murder especially....

Her day was ruined. Bobby pulled the fishing pole out of the water and threw it asside. She lifted her basket as she stood up and turned to leave. Without looking back, the woman went back into the woods. Pulling her hand back, she snarled and swiped at a tree, taking a large chunk out with her hardened hooves. If only she could do that to Billy.... Deep down, she knew it wouldn't help the situation.

Awen sharnk halfway back into the water at the woman's harsh gaze and angery tone. She hadn't meant to upset hte woman like this.

"I-I know what Billy can be like..." She said at her own defence. "I mean... after he turned for the first time he tried to kill me once, in some weird conspiracy craze." The manta shook her head slowly. "But from what I've been hearing around the island he's toned down a bit. I only mentioned him because... well... he was such a... well a sleeze ball and even he's starting to make the effort of joining in..."

First Contact

Yesterday, while exploring the island on a sort of nature hike, Jordan had stumbled across the colony of test subjects that Dr. Moreau had so kindly informed him of. Remebering that there were some who would react with hostility, he'd backed down and tried to remain incognito.

However, today was different. He'd become determined to scout out the village and hopefully come across someone who would be able to direct him to facilities for laundry and food.

As the previous day, Jordan carried with him his composition journal with the pen clipped to its cover. As he set foot into the vicinity of the village proper, Jordan glanced around silently taking in the sight of so many duplexes at first. There were many more test subjects than he was expecting, but not to mind. He looked like a lost tourist with a dumbfounded expression that said 'help me'.

Jordan, as a representative of Feral Labs, was not about to be seen in casual clothing and had reluctantly put on one of his wrinkled, already-worn work outfits from earlier in the week: black silk shirt, gray dress slacks, navy blue tie, and of course, he wore his black baseball cap and his blue sunshades. Those were a god-send at the moment as his awkward cycle had left him somewhat light-sensitive today.

Not knowing that the new unsuspecting islander needed help, or even that he was close by Awen appeared from around the line of duplexes. Her rubber skin still slicked with wetness from her swim and her whole body had a nice shine to it in the sunlight.

She had, in fact, noticed the man shortly after she rounded the duplexes and seeing that he was unchanged didn't really mean much to her, she had been seeing many new comers who hadn't yet experienced their first change- but knew of the island.

The manta girl raised a webbed arm and waved politely as she was continuing towards another clump of buildings ahead.

Suddenly, there was someone coming around the line of duplexes and he stepped lively to catch up so he could ask a few questions. That's when he noticed the mystery girl's appearance in more detail. His lively step slowed to a cautious walk. He didn't want to frighten her off afterall.

He arched a brow slightly at her appearance. Remember how you're supposed to conduct yourself, Jordan. He thought to himself as he continued his approach. Something was off. Was she one of the test subjects here? He'd best be careful not to say or do anything stupid to jeopardize his second chance.

"Excuse me, miss. Miss, please, may I have a moment of your time. I've only been here a week and I was wondering if you could tell me where I could do laundry and find something to eat."

The closer he got to the girl, the more he noticed and he tried to curb his initial shock. What was going on. What was with her arms? And her skin seemed so slick and... rubbery? He took note that she was still dripping. Was this some sort of state-of-the-art swim gear?

At the 'excuse me, miss.' Awen raised an eyebrow at the man, well he certainly was a little formal, wasn't he? Her expression changed to a soft smile as she listened to the rest of what he had to say but her mood changed drastically. Her stomach knotted hearing he'd only been here a week, she couldn't wrap her head around how he'd gone a week without food.

As he looked her over Awen had long ago prepared herself to the shocked and odd looks she recieved, but it didn't seem as though he were going to freak out. Good, so she wasn't his first islander.

"Oh, um, sure. The laundry machines are in that building over there, there are a couple of signs once inside so it shouldn't be hard to find. The cafeteria is over there, and the other buildings and rooms have a library slash tv room, a workout room, an arcade and a few little lounge areas." She pointed to the locations she had been indicating and everything was said with the most polite tone. "There's a community message board over there. Islander run, mind you, the labs never put one up so an islander made it himself."

She tapped a flippered foot and scratched awkwardly around her gills. The girl looked as if she was trying to remember something she had missed but with a resolute shake of her head she turned her violet eyes back to the newcomer. "That's about it for the town places."

Finally she allowed a puzzled expression to break through her polite smile. "Now, tell me, how the heck did you go a week without food? Most people find their way to the cafeteria before most other places." She chuckled softly and crossed her arms as best as the webbed things could.

He smiled as she was of great assistance. He nodded as she pointed to each respective area. So there was plenty for the subjects to do here. That was rather nice of Dr. Moreau. They were given entertainment and recreational activities to occupy themselves during their stay.

"Thank you so much." he tugged on his wrinkled silk shirt. "I was afraid that I wouldn't find a laundry machine to clean these dirty clothes."

She seemed to be one of the less hostile residents, which was only a positive point in his first encounter with a native. His attention was drawn to her flippered foot as it tapped. That must be rather form-fitting to be so responsive to every motion. Jordan's attention was brought back to eye-level as she asked how he'd survived a week without food.

"Oh, I found my mini-fridge stocked. It was a good thing Dr. Moreau had the foresight to do so or I'm not sure what I would have done." he smiled kindly to her and extended a hand in a gesture of good faith. "Thank you for your assistance. I'm Jordan. I was transferred here recently. Do you happen to work in the labs as well?"

It was then that Jordan noticed the gills. Gills? Wait... gills?? How could she... what would they... Gills...?? His questioning thoughts were cut off by more questioning thoughts.

"Forgive me for asking... miss... I'm afraid I didn't catch your name... How well does that swim outfit function? It must be fairly simple to breathe underwater." Jordan smiled naively, hoping that she would correct him without him making a complete fool of himself.

"Oh." Awen laughed softly as she replied without really thinking. "Well that would explain it then. When I arrived we didn't have fully stock--"

Her brow drew in as a dark look came over her face. Something in her mind just clicked and it wasn't a happy thought. She was his first islander encounter. He didn't understand what she was and what was that he said? He worked in the labs? It couldn't have been like Lily or Newt- no then the guy would have known about what was going on. And he did say he tranferred recently.... Damn.

Awen gave a quick look around before pointing a finger with a very serious look on her round fac. "Don't introduce yourself and say you have anything to do with the labs." She said quickly and lowered her finger. "Most people around here won't take kindly to it and you do not need enemies like that right off the bat."

She half turned from him and placed a webbed hand on her forehead to cool her forehead. Giving a heavy sigh she tilted her head back to the man, Jordan he said his name was, before shaking her head and looking downward. She hated what was coming next, it always came and it always made enemies.

Turning back to him the girl crossed her arms and held a rather sad look on her face. "My name is Awen Zyn. I arrived here a year and a few months ago. I was told I was coming here for therapy so that I would not fear water anymore. It wasn't exactly a lie, but it wasn't the whole truth either. Feral Labs has a shadey side, and my poor boy you are standing on it. This island is used to experiment on human subjects, fusing animal DNA with our own to make us something... different. As far as I can tell there are four stages of change that we go through- I am in the third stage of change and was injected with a manta ray serum. If you don't get the injections on time often you get very ill and I've been told you could contract a rather fast acting form of cancer. There are already a few islanders that have died due to complications and others have been killed by an islander who has gone mad and dug out her control chip. It is a risky place to be, but we have no choice now. Escape isn't an option mostly because the control chips they use are able to knock us out at a push of a button or spoken command. You worked for the labs, you said? I'm sorry but whatever you did to mess up has landed you here on the island. I'm not going to lie the transformations are painful and you can never leave for home again. I'm sorry Jordan..." The manta ray spoke slowly yet briskley, making sure he heard every word but left him no time to interupt her. Now she paused to take a breath and smiled.

"There are bright sides though. Most people have found amazing talents in their new forms and the island is like anyone's dream. No work, just relaxation and activities to keep your mind off things."

She now stopped finally and remained with a sad sort of smile on her lips awaiting any reaction the man may throw her way. Yelling out of anger, fear, disbelief, hyserical laughter? How would this newcomer react, she wondered? Unlike other island guessing games this one Awen hated and braced herself.

Was it something he'd said? He knew it. Jordan had said something stupid and upset her. He was afraid of what might happen when she became deadly serious. Would this get back to Dr. Moreau. Oh no... he didn't need to make trouble for himself... not again.. not so soon... Then, he listened as she warned him about not introducing himself as part of the labs and he cocked his head curiously.

"Enemies? Dr. Moreau had warned me ahead of time that there were those who were hostile towards the labs and those who were more friendly and open to them."

Before he could say more, Awen told him something that made the pit of his stomach ache. Fusing animal DNA into humans is what this island facility's project? He'd been told of an project, but beyond that nothing specific and he'd hesitated to inquire about that more when he'd had the chance. His thoughts were racing as she told him the horrible truth, the true nature of the beast as it were, the dark side of reality. Stages of transformation... cancer... and death has already resulted in some of the subjects. His heart beat faster as he didn't have time to mull over any of the information offered freely to him.

Was there the chance that he wouldn't share in their fate? Was it possible that he wouldn't have to suffer painfully?

Awen's words shook him when she stated: "..whatever you did to mess up has landed you here on the island. " Whatever he had done. Yeah... Whatever he had been a part of indeed. But... the doctor! He would have been infuriated if Jordan was truly being punished! It couldn't be true that he was to share in their fate! He even lived apart from their colony! What more proof did he need.

He took a deep breath, feeling a bit light-headed suddenly. He removed the sunshades and Awen could see just how exhausted Jordan was at last. His bloodshot eyes told him of the story, a man who had fears and worries of his future, of a man who hadn't had a decent night of sleep in almost two weeks. Jordan lowered his head and rubbed his eyes. What was going on?

"But... maybe it won't happen to me... right?" he absentmindedly rubbed the injection spot through his silk shirt. "I'm.. here to work. Not to be transformed into an animal." Jordan lifted his weary eyes and studied Awen's animalistic features. A manta ray...

Awen sighed heavily. So it was fear and denial. Not me, never me! A reaction she'd encountered before. Shaking her head once more she sighed.

"Lily was on the island to work, she even was in the labs for a time I hear-she is now one of us. Newt, a nervous littler janitor, was working in the labs. Now he's out here, offering a bug removal or bug catching service to islanders. He's transforming just like the rest of us."

Biting her lips she hesitated to introduce Jordan to the mentality most islanders had. "Basically it comes down to this: If you live out here- you're one of us and will transform. If you live in the labs- you're one of them and you will not transform. You've told me you live in a duplex, out here, that means you're one of us."

She shook her head and gave a snark laugh. "What most people don't realise is that it doesn't matter if you're one of us or one of them. Human or not, we're all trapped here. I'm willing to bet that most of the lab techs in the head office over there came in similar ways that you did- a relocation with benifits they can't refuse. I know, as I have talked numerous times and am friends with one of Moreau's more trusted staff members, that no one leaves the island except for Moreau himself, Aubrey - his right hand tech and fiance- and James, the helicopter pilot. Don't take too seriously the 'us' versus 'them' mentality. Really it's 'us' versus 'Moreau' as he's the b*****d who started these experiments. Or... rather his Grandfather appearently did, but he took up where the old man had left off. At least that's what I gather from the big fancy tombstone and stuff I've heard from Sabin."

Letting out a slow breath Awen's eyes finally returned to the bloodshot eyes of the new islander. "I'm really sorry about this, hun, I really am. I don't like seeing new arrivals.... but it's better you know the truth from the start."

Unreal.

This was not happening. No, it wasn't going to happen. It couldn't happen!! Jordan rubbed his face with the hand holding his sunshades, his other clenching into a fist. He was so tired and being in control of himself was difficult with such stressing news.

"Everything was supposed to be forgivven." he spoke with a warble in his voice. "This is my second chance.. to prove myself."

He felt that nervous, frustrated lump swelling in his throat. He couldn't break down. Jordan was stronger than this. He wasn't going to show anything less than the rock-like fortitude. Even if the residents of the island were undergoing painful metamorphosis into animal-human hybrids... but Awen had mentioned two other people who'd been enmployed by the labs: Lily and Newt... so... maybe it was possible.. was it going to be true that Jordan would also join them?

He sighed in confusion. This wasn't helping his already high stress level. He gave Awen a look of his increasing uncertainty as he felt so faint and staggered backwards a few steps, almost falling down.

"Awen.. you're obviously one of the sub--" he stopped himself from calling her a subject. "you didn't lunge at me with hatred and animosity, so is it correct to assume that you're on good terms with the situation and the people in control? I'm not sure if I can easilly digest any of what you've told me just now.. I'm sure it was hard for you to believe at first as well."

Awen spoke of her friendship with Sabin and her disapproval of the us and them mentality but she supposed it was lost on the man's ears. He'd had a lot to take in. As he stumbled back Awen stepped forward darting out to catch him before he fell, but he didn't so she simply stopped herself and stepped back.

"Come on..." She said softly and waved him on. "Let's get you a place to sit, some water, maybe some food and then we'll keep talking okay?" She half turned and indicated that she wanted to take him to the cafeteria before she'd say anymore.

He stayed close to Awen. She was the only other person here he knew and she seemed friendly and trustworthy. He needed a friend about now and followed her. Food and water sounded good. His stomach churned partially from stress, but also with hunger.

"That sounds like a plan." he forced a smile.

He felt like an idiot. He was deceived again?! This was ridiculous. Jordan's naivete' knew no bounds apparently, if even the man who'd employed him had pulled the wool over his eyes.

"I'm not mad at you. I just want you to know that. I'm.. it just... seems that I don't know who to trust and who to be wary of. I'm not doubting what you've told me.. I can plainly see that you're telling the truth.. I just hope that it won't happen to me. I'm so tired and stressed.. I haven't slept in about two weeks.. and I can't sleep in my duplex.. I'm only able to get an hour or two at most before I'm up long enough to pass out from exhaustion hours later." Jordan was opening up to Awen.. just like he had on the mainland, just like he trusted Dr. Moreau and now he was doing it again.

As they entered the cafeteria, the smells of so much food assaulted his senses all at once and he rushed (almost falling flat on his face as he tripped) to the line. The assortment of food was... plentiful. That was sure. He began to gag at some of the choices on the menu and quickly turned away with a hand over his mouth, clutching the side of a table for support

Awen smiled as they approched the cafeteria. "You know Jordan, you have no idea how good that is to hear. Most islanders freak out and yell at me- and then we're in foul states ever after. I'm glad you're not the same."

She would have laughed at his race to the food if he hadn't turned around and gaged only a moment after. "Woah there, slow down hun. Calm... You haven't eaten in a bit have you?" She shook her head an moved over to a nearby table leaning against it to wait for the man to pick his meal. "And yeah getting used to the time zones and whatnot are weird. You'll get it eventually though."

"Like you guessed, I'm good with most of the labs. I'm one of the only subjects who is." She made sure to stress the word subject to show that he need not be afraid to use it in her presence. "I'm on good terms with Sabin and have a nice repore with a few of the techies on monitor duty, but as far as the true people in control there is only one - Moreau - and I will never say that I am on good terms with that man." Her tone turned to that of bitter disgust when speaking of Moreau.

Jordan took a slow breath and waited for his stomach to settle. He nodded in affirmation to her question.

"Yes, it's been a few hours too many since I've eaten and it's not helping that my stomach is killing me with stress. I think I'm good now." he smiled genuinely to her this time, not forcing it as he made his way back to the food.

It did smell good and he had a hard time choosing. As he picked up a plate Jordan looked it all over, deciding on mashed potatoes and two sausage, with a side of carrots. He grabbed a bottle of water as well.

He hung his sunshades in the collar of his shirt and picked up his plate. He was careful not to trip this time as he sat down with Awen, on the opposite side of the table, so he could be face-to-face.

Jordan quickly scooped a few spoonfulls of potatoes into his mouth, without thinking of present company. His stomach immediately settled some as the flavor hit his tongue.

"Mmmmmmmmmm...." resounded as he swallowed. "Oh man this is so good."

Jordan set down his spoon for a moment and smiled at Awen. "Thank you for helping me learn the layout of the land. I really appreciate it."

He'd picked up on her usage of the word 'subject' and understood that she wouldn't be offended if he had said it earlier. He didn't say anythign to the tone she took when Awen had spoken Moreau's name. Jordan really couldn't be sure still that this was his fate and understood how the situation could turn someone bitter against a man holding an island's worth of people-turned-beasts captive.

"What are the other staff like? Sabin. And Aubrey. It might be good to become familiar with the people who're running things here."

Jordan stabbed a few carrot slices with his fork in the meantime.

She settled into her chair and paused at the question. "Sabin is nice, to me at least. He has a sense of humour that most don't really understand, and he plays pranks occasionally. Nothing serious, in my opinion, but I've seen a few islanders become furious with the man. He's got a french accent." Dreamy in Awen's opinion but she kept that to herself. "Uh, and otherwise seems to be helpful. He's really big into mythology and used to teach at... Harvard I think."

The manta girl bit her lip considering the next one. "I don't honestly know much about Aubrey. Mad in love with Moreau, I've heard many of the events around the island are her doing.... she saved my life once..." Pausing Awen sighed. She had mixed feelings about Aubrey ever since her snit with Sabin all that time ago. "She generally seems to be nice but watch out she's got a wicked temper...."

Shrugging the girl leaneed on her elbows. "Not that it matters much. Most islanders don't come into contact with the head ups all that often. When they do it's generally because something's gone wrong or by the intercom in their duplex. And few islanders care to know any techie-except to recognise them for whenever they think they'd be able to take revenge." Awen rolled her eyes at the very thought.

Jordan couldn't help but chuckle at the idea of one of the higher-ups playing pranks on the job. It caused him to choke a bit on a carrot chunk, but it passed.

"Maybe I'll get to meet him one of these days. It seems likely enough since I'll be in the labs at some point as soon as I'm given my assignments." He winced as soon as he'd said that magic word 'labs' and looked around in a paranoid fashion to make sure there was no one else who'd heard it. Confirming they were alone, he settled back into his chair.

"I hope that I won't make enemies here, but considering why I'm here and for what purpose that I am here, it seems inevitable." He tried not to look so glum about that and snickered again at a lab tech conducting practical jokes.

He was feeling a little better with food in his stomach, even if it wasn't enough to compensate for the exhaustion brought on by sleep deprivation.

"Awen, I know this may be an awkward request.. but.. you've helped me out and I'm eternally grateful- so is my stomach.. you're the first person other than Doctor Moreau that Ive met and.. well.. it would be nice to have a friend here." Jordan hoped that didn't come off as anything odd or weird. "A friend, someone more experienced with the inner workings and layout of the island, would be invaluable. And you're such a nice person."

She was right with her frist impression: this guy was formal. She nodded a bit and chuckled. "Of course I'll be your friend Jordan, no worries." She shook her head in amusement for a moment beofre heaving a sigh. "Just don't be surprised if you don't get assignments..." She shook her head and stood up slowly.

There was a noticible difference in her skin since they had first seen eachother. Instead of the shiny rubber like texture it had befre it was more dried out and cracked. Little flakey bits were seeming to come off of her shoulders.

"But for now I should get going. Probably going to get in a swim before I go for food myself."

He was pleased to know that he wouldn't feel alone and that was comforting. Hopefully he'd feel better before too long. Jordan hadn't made a bad impression this time, but if this kept up, things could get worse. It was difficult to keep himself composed from the lack of sleep.

Jordan wondered when he would get his assignments.. he wasn't used to so much free time..

Jordan noticed the difference in texture of Awen's skin and felt concern for her condition. "Are you alright, Awen? I hope that I haven't kept you too long." he slipped on his sunshades. "And I hope to see you around sometime." he took a bite of one of the sausages and watched her stand.

Awen glanced at her shoulder and brushed off a piece of flaked skin. "Don't worry about it." She chuckled and shook her head. "It's just a bit of dry skin. Just itchy, nothing serious."

She waved a webbed hand and turned to leave. "And remember no mentioning your work infront of others until you figure out if they're friendlies or no."
